We've had a big increase in interest in HORSE SPORTS around here so it's time for another edition of /horse/!

May 1: La Troienne, Kentucky Oaks

May 2:
From the USA: Churchill Downs, Derby City Distaff, KENTUCKY DERBY, Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic

I have an account with one of the online racebooks and can watch streams of most races. I’m not sure if what options you’d have in your country.

Keeneland in Kentucky is also up.

I have both Keeneland and Tampa Bay open in the background and I keep wondering if the stream stopped because there's huge periods where they don't say anything and there's no background sounds or anything. I'm too used to the NY Races where they are constantly yapping.

NYRA covers several tracks across the country and are basically sports commentators that are there in case they do go on live TV.

Most track feeds are bare bones track feeds designed to be watched at the track bar/simulcast facility/OTB parlor.

They typically have silence except for when the race is running and usually a short pre-race commentary section from the paddock reporter usually about 15 mins before the race. Some will have commentary over the post parade. Also at the beginning of the day they will have the track's talking heads give a rundown of the days races and their picks for the upcoming races, as well as the days scratches and updates.

Usually because these are being watched at places that have dozens of tvs all tuned to different racetracks.

The NYRA stream is designed as a TV show for the FS1/FS2 channels, which is why it has so much more commentary and much less dead air.

I'm not trying to sound racist, but is there any advantage to horses having their tails long instead of cropped or cut short? It seems like a shorter tail might be more aerodynamic.

I'm going to shill this Japanese horse drama because it's a really good show if you love the bloodline aspect of the sport. It's also good, if dramatized, look into every aspect of a horse's career from the breeding, the training, the jockeys, the stable staff, the races, to the drama between the owners.

I think it's Passing the Reins on netflix.

A lot of times when there's a bunch of scratches in the high teens digits those are "also eligibles" - horses that will only enter the race if other horses scratch. Most american races aren't run with more than 12 horses, the kentucky derby being a notable exception with its 20 horse field.

What's it like for trainers and horses that dont measure up to G1 contenders but are out there doing regionals or X-number-of-wins type races?
>>
>>154300655
Depends on what you specifically mean. In terms of their goals, standings among peers or something else entirely?
>>
Does anyone use a database of some sort to get data on the horses? Such as their past performance, trainer etc.

>>

I've never seen Drive to Survive, but the character drama is heavily dramatized. The horse racing aspect is generally accurate though, which is to be expected since it's sponsored by the JRA themselves.
>>
>>154301798
>for eu and usa, fuckton under paywall
You can get most stuff except for detailed past performances (pic related) for free. You usually either have to pay directly or indirectly (by betting) for the past performance info.

DtS will take events and put them out of order and heavily rely on editing to tell the story they want to tell instead of what actually happened during that F1 season

My first pick stunk so bad that I will NOT be watching any more racing from Parx today.

Are there any good books to read about horse racing? More like history books, not "how to bet" type books.

for races that have certain trainers in them or progeny of certain sires you can also get free pps, but they aren't organized in a way that its easy to find the race you want.

there used to be a site called whobet that compiled all that stuff but all the providers started blocking links from his site.

Has anyone here watched harness racing? It's the only type of racing at the track closest to where I live. Even if I admittedly don't think it's exciting as flat racing, it's fine in its own way.

Arguably the most prestigious turf race in the world (Or at least one of top turf races, though due to the overall decline of European racing its status has been declining somewhat), Japanese horses have attempted the race dozens of times (first time by Speed Symboli in 1969) but are yet to win the race (there is a joke that the French use their druids to summon rain and turn the turf into a swamp and that's why JP horses can't win)
Here is a video of The Japanese Triple Crown winner Orfevre racing in L'Arc in 2012

I used to live half an hour from a harness track and never went :(

>>154305540

It's decent but there is less horses involved in the races and it's weird watching horses going at a weird gait compared to how they usually run. It's more fun to do than watch.

is an horse an athlete?
