Why does this word make people online genuinely upset? Any youtube video where the word soccer is uttered half the comments are people angrily correcting them as if it was a racist slur.Italians call it ‘calcio’ so why don’t they get taunted for that?
>Italians call it ‘calcio’ so why don’t they get taunted for that?Because nobody speaks fucking Italian.
Lowborns think it's American imperialism and there was an agenda to steal "football" and use it for "American football". In reality soccer was used in Europe first. Just like the culture of tipping in restaurants. Also people including me want to get upset on the internet subconsciously
>>154331917I don’t really get it either, though „football“ feels more natural to me, so I will just say that whenever possibleBy now, I think it’s a term war that sustains itself: some Americans make a point of calling it „soccer“ and making it sound as depreciating as possible, some Europeans push back against this in needlessly autistic ways. A lot of it is just banter, though … I hope
>>154331917I personally like Kick The Can
>>154331917Why it makes chavs seethe I don't know, it's a British word and was commonly used in the UK for decades.
>>154331917- Because majority call it football- Football makes sense as it's played with its foot and a ball- Soccer feels like calling the sport by some gay brand i.e. calling MMA UFC
>>154336253>Soccer feels like calling the sport by some gay brandIt was started by rugby players who wanted to differentiate football to their rugby football. As we all know, rugby players are gays so it makes sense.
Footie and soccer were normal words when I was a kid, but they were informal and football was the official name. The American usage of soccer as an official name is cringe inducing.
American culture is so pervasive that we've been the victims of so much cultural imperialism over the years that we are now immensely sensitive to any further genocide of our language. There was an advert on TV where an English guy mentioned wearing "sneakers" recently. Literally nobody says that in this country. They're called trainers. Nobody, anywhere, calls them sneakers. To call them sneakers is to openly scorn the culture of our beautiful country, and this cannot be allowed to stand.
>>154338174
>>154338174We use Trainer for windbreaker or tracksuits
>speak American>consoom American media>browse American websites>via American devices >proceed to seethe at Americans for no reason while they peacefully watch their own sports, completely oblivious to your existence Why are Euros like this? It's the same with MENAfags and Egypt, bizarre inferiority complex. they have no reason to call it football and we have no reason to call it soccer, what's the big deal
In recent years I've only seen ESLs complain about "soccer" being used.I genuinely don't care and will use it when talking to an American who I know doesn't follow it.
