Whats a good bike brand to look for that offers good value for mountainbikes? My main bike is a city commuter that does everything I need it for regarding errands and travel. But it doesn't do well for rocky trails and forrest paths in my very mountainous area (Southern tip of Germany). Seeing as this would be only a second bike, it shouldn't need to be more than 1k. I basically need the bike to do two things very well to complement my main bike, for the city
>have a good gearing for steep vertical stuff
>have thick and grippy tires for smooth riding on mixed surfaces
Should I look at entry level, consumer type, alloy hardtail mountain bikes (600-800 euros)? Which components should I look for? Looking at the market, this segment is increadably packed however, hence the question about brands.

What fork travel do you need? Is 100mm travel enough? That's standard hard tail travel. Shimano deore is a solid reasonably priced group set that comes on a lot of decent hard tails. Usually 1x, all you'd realistically need. Honestly I'd invest into new deore or XT brakes if it doesn't already come with them, you really need 2 pot brakes if you're doing anything on trails that needs 100mm suspension. They're way nicer and much easier to use because it's a softer brake on the hands, and more powerful. Decent discs and pads would be good too. Like swiss stop pads or something.

Look into something like a Trek Roscoe 7 or 8 second hand. They have a wider tyre so more grip and that almost acts in travel in it's own regard because the tyre has more ability to move around and compress. The roscoe 7 and 8 have good forks and they're often spec'd with at least deore groupsets. 1x 12 speed. Dropper post too which is a really nice touch. 2nd hand on ebay in UK, they all seem to be from 600-1000 depending on how used they are. I googled just now, apparently the 24' model is 140mm fork, so it handles everything, I'm surprised really.

https://ebay.us/m/FtPWck

This for example would be a great bike but the first thing I'd do before I take it to trails is get new grips and install some deore or XT brakes. New brakes and pads are probably about 150 euro. New discs maybe 60 euro, possibly a bit more. But better brakes will improve the bikes performance a lot. Tyres are 2.6" iirc so that's a wide tyre that'll definitely offer more grip, comfort and absorb the terrain similar to how a full suspension might feel. It's more slack geometry too so it's more comfortable and gives more control on trails.

I'm sure other brands make a very similar bike but I don't know any models other than the roscoe. Only negative is that it's not as fast on the flats because the wider tyres and slack geometry, but it's a superior off road experience to a standard hard tail.

He's had a very good career, but I think that until 2023, it was expected that it would be even better.

For example, back in 2023 after San Sebastian, I wouldn't have believed if you told me he'd need almost 3 years until his next classic win.

I'm actually glad that he started doing Ronde because I think that (and eventually MSR) are where he has better chances of winning more monuments if Pogacar is out if the picture.

He still has time though. I really hope he manages to get a few more monuments, more classics, and maybe a 2nd Worlds RR title before the end of his career. I think the window to win more GTs has unfortunately passed.

Considering he was doing the goat gesture during one of his WC wins as a youth, he's actually kind of right. Everyone expected way more. He's had too many DNF's too which is a bad sign. In the scheme of things he was a nothingburger for his GT career which he was hyped for. One day race and stage poacher he probably lived up to his hype. Still young so though. Got a few monuments left in him still.

If you're fine buying direct and not from a store, Radon usually has some pretty good value offerings.
>Which components should I look for?
Frame is obviously the most important. It should fit you (!!!) and geometry should fit your use case, think about whether you want more of a XC or hardcore geometry. And it should be compatible with wide tires and whatever the current standards are for axle, bottom bracket, brake mount, derailleur mount, steerer tube, and whatever else I might be forgetting to mention.
Suspension fork is probably the next most important, many brands like to cheap out here and use cheap models that kinda suck. Do your research and look out for the best model you can find, with adequate travel for your use case.
I remember some cheap hydraulic disc brakes being pretty trashy, do your research and avoid those. You don't need anything fancy, but you don't want shit that fails easily or is a bitch to maintain.
You probably want wide rims that are tubeless compatible.
Think about whether you want a dropper post.
For gearing, mid-tier Shimano (used to be Deore) or Sram should be fine. Make sure they're not cheaping out on shift levers and combine a mid-tier derailleur with trash-tier shift levers. Think about what gearing ratios and gear steps you want, and whether you want 1x or 2x.
Tires are always a compromise, so it's hard to give a specific recommendation. "Mixed surfaces" probably implies some type of "jack of all trades, master of none". Anyway, they're easy and not that expensive to replace, so that's always an option and I wouldn't attach overly much import to them.
Saddle, grips, stem, handlebars, pedals are quite individual, so general recommendations aren't really possible. You might want to replace them according to your personal preferences.
It's been a while since I've looked at MTB parts, so sadly I can't give you specific recommendations. And there's probably something I forgot to mention.

They mean the foundation that helped millions of people? Funny way to say that. Almost sounds as if the donation is into his pocket and not his charity, deceptive wording. Couldn't afford a donation to charity to have the biggest name in the sport at the time boost the race?

>With Pogačar, it was different: we were told that he wants to win and that they even want to help us with our communication

So I was thinking about this when watching LBL the other day. We have a few burgers in here so maybe they can confirm. But imagine living in some fucking hellish zero bike lanes, zero nature urban shithole where you drive from store to store in giant parking lots and then watching the rolling hills of spring europe, the brick houses, the small villages, the greenery, the history and the absolute soul.

If you're american or some johnny foreigner third worlder watching cycling, it must be some kind of surreal SOVL overload I can't even begin to imagine.

I was in Wales last weekend. Packed full of indian thirdies. They were clearly in awe. Gathering around a field with a few sheep, nothing special. I would imagine it's like "wow look how clean and natural it is, it's a natural wonder!" Of course, it's a pasture so it's an open air factory. Should be ancient forest, not a pasture. I wouldn't imagine they think far into things because they're stupid, same with mutts. The general order and cleanliness must be shocking to them.

As long as mutts and thirdies stay away from these areas they are safe. Stick mutts into a cozy area and suddenly mcdonalds and car dealerships grow out the ground in 2 months. Import poos and you get stench of curry, litter and a constant drone of urdu ringing around the area. God I love being a western european. Rest of the world, other than japan maybe, seems like a he'll scape.

>>
>>154406767
But muh christian values!!! Thirdies should have been put into reserves like animals and never allowed to leave whilst western civilisation built societies in those regions. Look at south africa now. Could have been easily avoided. Apartheid was good for the colonies and America. High productivity, low crime. Give africans autonomy and they kill, rape and rib everything they can. One thing I don't understand is that indians are proven ideological enemies of the west and cozy with our enemy, so why are the being flooded to the west so quickly? I spoke with many indians. They think they're smart and original but they're all identical. Except the lighter ones are racist to the darker ones. Grim people in every respect. A d honestly I don't see Americans as any better. Arrogant, rude, obsessed with social ranking, highly unreasonable, stupid. Exactly the same issues with indians.

I mean, it looks nice yes. But plenty of races have long motorway segments. Fuck, LBL even passed an old style Pizza Hut and strip mall type things leading into Liege, so it’s hardly like it’s the best of Europe all the time.

I live in Washington DC, which has great bike infrastructure and good access to road riding and gravel. The northern Virginia suburbs can get about as generic as you think, and even out there you get some decent bike infrastructure. But yes, lots of eight lane roads full of dipshits too. But, I’d say I’m just as envious of the riding that they get in LA as I am of Girona. So not exclusive to Europe.

This shit is easily solvable though.

The problem is them having the races at the same day / place. Split men and women's competitions completely. Who in their right minds would watch 5 hours of men's cycling on a sunday and then another 2 hours of women's cycling ontop immediately after. Have men focus on hard tough terrain and women focus more on tourist-y and scenic places.

Have the men ride up a mountain, and the women ride on the beach promenade of Southern France to show case it. Tourist associations, city councils, hotels, restaurants, who wouldn't want a live televised sporting event in their area. Don't ride through bumfuck villages, literally ride in the down town tourist attraction places. Also allow the women's races to be jewed out a little more. The Hilton Race - ride around the block where a Hilton Hotel is located 12 times. Hotels.com Gold Race, Visit Spain Road Race, just be creative. Nobody I repeat nobody wants to see women do watered down version of men's sports. Make routes specifically designed for women, and make them scenic as fuck. Men and women's sports are undeniably two different products, it's time to start treating them as such. And boo-hoo muh women that want's to do le same epic climbs as the men, you wanna race or what? You want a salary? You want your sport to exist? We're hitting the beach, ladies.

The elephant in the room is barely anyone watches the woman sport in the first place so it does not matter where they ride or what they do. And even less will watch if the racing is boring tourist group rides because the only people watching, the hardcore cycling fans, want to see fun racing period.

Truth is that you cannot push a product that people will largely never want. It will never be a successful product no matter what you do. Women need to accept lesser contract, the races should be self sustainable and not subsidised by cutting mens racing, which is THE product. Football also subsidise women teams but their cash flow is astronomical and it's a drop in the water for them. It's more of a family event because it's cheap and the fans are all families or weirdos. It's really simple; it will never work the way they want it to and no genius plan will ever make it work. Cut the bullshit and bin the races that don't fund themselves. Sick of the commie mindset.
>>
>>154414666
Well that seals it. That'll be in the next year or two. The saint is about to slay the vampire. I cannot wait.
>>
>>154414702
You're wrong. I'd totally watch a women's race that was unique and maybe at a different time. Plan those races around the mens races (on off sundays during spring season or on saturdays even). I will NOT watch the last 50 km on Roubaix when I JUST WATCHED THE MEN DO IT.

Have them ride in Monaco, start that shit at 7 or 8 so we get some nice sunset shots. Ride past a bunch of Yatchs I'll never be able to afford. Have them do a couple of laps on the F1 course that'd be fucking hillarious.

It needs to be a different product.

Women ruin everything including men's cycling
>>
>REMKHI alone in Turkey
The Kazakh Remco
>>
>>154414736
They have to put ads on Roubaix womens where there were no ads on the mens race. Probably the most novel womens race of the year and they have to pump ad revenue in. I tried to watch it but they ride so slow over the cobbles. Women sports are just lame. Gymnastics is cool because they are better than men and have more elegance.

Nothing will make women's sport successful other than cutting the ambition and keeping it as a little side event. Good luck getting areas like Monaco shut down for a womens event given the Suisse sponsors are refusing to pay any extra for women coverage. End of the day it comes down to money and if very few will watch the sport in the first place the sponsors have no motivation to front the cash. Now consider the cost of hotels and the infrastructure in monaco, it would all have to be subsidised and the cost would be extremely high to host the event. There is no return on that given there are too few viewers. Maybe they could get away with riding around the blackpool promenade or having a crit around the Marseille ghetto though.

Another factor is the demographics of viewers who are apparently younger on average and almost 50% of them are women. They mens sponsors cannot appeal the same to these demographics for various reasons. It's just a completely different animal. Sponsors actions are probably the best way to judge the disparity between the two events. And consistently they withhold their sponsor shekels when it comes to women cycling.

It's not easily solvable. You can't get me to watch races like this and I watch more cycling than 90% of people who will watch the tdf. People no watchy, companies no sponsory, then you're fooked. These races are destined to fail. And cycling is expensive to host compared to other sports.

As a loyal cycling fan since the armstrong era; "public road" sports such as cycling and rally are having a tough time and it's not gonna get better. - It gets increasingly more expensive and hard to organize anything in public space.
- Young people don't wanna volunteer anymore to help on intersections
- while at the same time the level of expectations for more strict signalization and security is higher.
- Also the speed bumps, roundabouts and road furniture is a hassle, and you cant really just avoid them because you want to ride through villages and cities for exposure, fans & sometimes $ income (start-finish ususally).
- And lastly, people are way too spoiled with an abundance of entertainment these days. Every damn village in flanders had their own yearly race, and sometimes big names even rode them. But it pulled the whole village outside, to the burger trucks, the cafés etc, because it was the highlight of the year for many people. All these small village traditions, not just cycling, die because too little people still care.

There's no way cycling as a whole will die, but I expect many of these smaller races to die or re-invent themselves.
