Was he right about Pele?
>>

Another boomer myth like Michael Jordan and Maradona
Complete propaganda nonsense

You never saw Michael Jordan play
>>
>>154403414
MJ was so good he needed to close his eyes during free throws because that was the only way he could point shave
>>
These fake quotes are always so funny when you know how these people actually talked.
>>
>never respected Pele
>never acknowledged messi or cr7
>hated cryuff
>called neymar a joke

what has his fucking problem?
>>
>>154403226
No, he's just being an autist
>>
>>154403226
yep. growing up, I didn't even realise Pele was still alive. he was made into that much of a mythical figure
>>
>>154403226
Definitely not.

Pelé reached mythological status rightfully so. He was 50 years ahead of the match and had incredible feats against incredible competition.

The problem I have is that he wasn't the only one that ahead of the curve. A guy like Garrincha does not get as much credit as he deserves. He should be at least in the same tier as Maradona in the GOAT conversation, but he isn't, he gets relegated to Pelé's Batman and almost completely forgotten.
>>
>>154403766
>ahead of the match
game*
>>
>>154403226
I think this is more true for Maradona. Obviously an amazing player but the IDEA of him is so much bigger than the man
>>
>>154403855
I rate Maradona, but it's undeniable he was overhyped a bit so that Argentina had someone to rival Brazil's Pelé

Same reason Cristiano was even put in the conversation against Messi, simply Real Madrid's best vs Barcelona's best
>>
Maybe this is redundant, but just to make sure: how many of you think this is a real Beckenbauer quote?
>>
>>154403963
If it's on the internet then it's real
>>
Pelé definitely is made bigger in hindsight. He was an exceptional player and arguably the best ever (in relation to his era), but this status and the emerging global marketing made him take an even higher position in the football world later on. There are other outstanding players who receive a tenth of his attention at best despite being better than a tenth of Pelé
That being said, Pelé did not profit from any character folklore. Players like Maradona or George Best were outstanding as well, but a lot of their legacy and legend status isn't even fully based on football, but on how they were party animals and womanizers who never gave a fuck. It fits with their technical brilliance and flashy play style and makes them shine brighter, but you could argue that it's fake or at least not important for the actual sportive impact. The only thing Pelé gets in this regard is the default "Brazilian jogo bonito" romanticsm. But he was one of the players building that international view on Brazilian footballers in the first place

And once again, just to make sure: the entire GOAT debate is inherently flawed anyway

A great quote of Beckenbauer. Only 8 month shy of his death, by severe dementia in his own piss

He thinks he was superior. Based Kaiser
>>
>>154403766
I often heard that garrincha was more popular amongst brazilian boomers, because he was cthe guy close to the people, while pelé was the junta's poster boy
>>
>>154407174
He was supremely based, but he was extremely respectful towards these players. He usually dodged the questions on greatness comparisons, but the had the courtesy to call Pelé the greatest ever after his death. He was also very open about considering Uwe Seeler his idol and role model, for example (despite being basically the polar opposite in many ways)
Beckenbauer is often credited with having been a very amicable and humble person behind the camera, despite being considered the „luminous figure“ of German football
>>
>>154403442
in German?

Kaiser Franz had a very recognizable speech pattern, even for a Bavarian

Beckenbauer and Pelé had a very positive relationship. They died in time to prevent zoomers from calling it glazing. I don't know whether Pelé was like this toward other players. Beckenbauer certainly held Pelé in the highest regards possible, although it's of course hard or impossible to compare that with the relationship he had with his Bayern or Germany teammates

Average real Beckenbauer quote "The Swiss are no Dutchmen, we could clearly see this today" "The result is not going to change unless someone is scoring a goal"

Absolutely mogs Lewa's tiktoks
>>
>>154403226
Yes, he is. Pelé reached the status of some kind of myth or legend, his place on the podium doesn't matter anymore. Personally, if you talk to me about Mbrappe or Haaland, I would fall asleep even if they are better than Pelé. But I'm not sure, I could just be nostalgic and sad
>>
>>154403226
he's right in the sense that Pele wasn't that good but people just believe he was because boomers told them
so in that sense it's an "idea"
in reality he's not a top 1000 player of all time
>>
>>154403226
Did he realy said that?

>A guy like Garrincha does not get as much credit as he deserve
He's brought up every time Pelé is mentioned. If there's anyone who doesn't get a tenth of the praise he deserves it's Didi. He was Pelé before Pelé.
>>154407236
That's a myth. A very popular one, but still a myth. Garrincha was certainly more popular in 1958 and 1962 because he was at his prime while Pelé was just a boy. They were seven years apart from each other. And Garricha also has the merit of being the godfather of all Brazilian flashy wingers, so if that's what you're really into it makes sense to pick him over Pelé.
But with that out of the way, Pelé was the better player in every imaginable way. His career was significantly longer at the top level, Garrincha's collective and individial honours never came close to Pelé's, Pelé was more complete, Pelé had better numbers, Pelé was physically fitter, Pelé was more popular and Pelé ultimately did everything better than Garrincha. For more than a decade Pelé was the absolute dominant figure in Brazilian football who thrashed every club repeatedly and couldn't be stopped no matter what, and he has honours to prove that.
>>
Pele, like Messi and CR7, did most of his work in a farmers league
>>
>>154429642
Pelé pls go
>>
>>154429368
Yes, Beckenbauer was infamous for being a Marvel and India expert. And he was very vocal about that. Especially when he was dementia-riddled and a few months away from death, living a secluded life away from the public
