It sells merchandise and draws in new fans who don't want to get invested in old teams because they don't want to learn decades of team history to be considered a real fan.They can't just expand like that in the NCAA though. So they do the next best thing, and try to set up some shitty underdog school that's never achieved anything in Basketball to overperform.

This expansion plus the NIL is truly the death of any and all future Cinderella runs. The era of all 1 and 2 seeds dominating is here to stay for good, at the expense of the true soul of the tournament.
