I might just be a dumb american, but where did the term “big six” come from? Obviously tottenham aren’t at the same level as the other 5. To be honest, they don’t have as storied of a history as newcastle or even everton.

Revenue

Well, Tottenham used to compete for the UCL spot.
They also used to have quality players like Modric, Kane, Son, Bale, etc

>but where did the term “big six” come from?
It's a misnomer, they are the sky six, they get the highest viewing numbers and therefore get the most coverage and refereeing decisions

Ah yes, the storied history of Chelsea
>>
it was originally a big 5 (Utd/Liverpool/Spurs/Arsenal/Everton). Chelsea and now City have been tagged on because of somewhat arbitrary success. it's also important to note that Spurs have greater claim to being part of a "big" anything, since they've actually won 4 major European trophies (3 UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues and a Cup Winners Cup). Arsenal have not caused a ripple of relevance in Europe at any point in their history, and they spammed half their relevant domestic trophies in the 1930s. there has never been a club with a greater chasm between actual achievement, self-perceived relevance and actual relevance. in their heads they're in some way equal to Utd or Liverpool, who globally are comparable to Barca/Madrid/Milan. Arsenal are closer to teams like Feyenoord or Panathanaikos

What's your stance on Israel, if I may ask?

They make more money than everyone else
>>
It's a big 5 but they added Spurs to avoid being labeled as antisemites.

Yes, it's actually more storied
>>
>>154465029
there used to be 6 good teams
now there's 1 good team

This was the only explanation so far that makes a lot of sense, the gap really is big.
>>
the same thing when serie-a had 'magnificent seven' in the 90-00s
>>
>>154465029
It used to be big 4 after chelsea got big money then man city joined and for some reason they also included Tottenham
>>
Spurs will still be in the Big Six even if they're in the Championship, because it's revenue based
>>
>>154465029
Just pure eplel marketing, the only big teams in England are United and Liverpool and they keep getting humiliated by Guardiola just for him to get his annual humiliation against Madrid

tottenham at the time were owned by Joe Lewis who was connected to Wall Street. the European Super League was an idea by Wall Street, formed in the offices of Wall Street banks in NYC to monetise football club brands on a global level. tottenham were included because of Joe Lewis's connection to wall street bankers and the working assumption that the big stadium spurs had would be good for the brand on a global level, using teh NFL and concerts at "Tottenham Stadium" to spread the Tottenham Hotspur brand.
it wasn't down to sporting ability beyond spurs having progressed far in a recent Champions League season (2019), it was down to money, finance and brands.
