I have heard from previous known Match fixing examples from Italy, what was happening was the fixing element called only something like 3-4 players(including the captain) that they somewhat trust could work for them, they call them in this into a meeting to give them the instruction to lose the game by influenceing the team to be lethargic and they would be bad/make discrete mistakes themselfs. They would not tell the other 7-8 players.
