Cricket is the most impressive to me, already the most continents for a team sport and it could easily be 6 if South Africa wins a world cup in the future. To be fair there are only like 8 good teams, it's just evenly distributed between the continents which is cool
Soccer is obviously the worst, kind of weird that the "world's game" has been won by the fewest regions of practically any sport.
>>
>>154543980
Handball is the worst in total. Let's be real, Russia is a European nation culturally and demographically. Russians are East Slavs and Russia grew eastwards into Asia. They are members of the European sports assocations as well.
Handball is hilariously Europe-centered, the only worthwhile countries not from Europe are Egypt and Brazil
But football/soccer is obviously much more terrible when you consider that it is by far the most popular and competitive sport worldwide. And it doesn't get better when you look at the respective best results of the non-winning continents
>North America
The USA reached the semifinal in the very first World Cup in 1930. They definitely weren't the third-best team in the world at that point, though, as that multiple elite nations (mostly from Europe) didn't participate in 1930 for logistical reasons. The US had to defeat Paraguay and Belgium (who were terrible back then) to become a semifinalist
>Africa
Just got its first semifinalist in 2022. Is hailed as the continent with the most raw potential. The semifinalist Moroccans however had a starting formation consisting mostly of players born, raised, and developed in Europe (France, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands)
>Asia
Had a single semifinalist in the 2002 World Cup: hosts South Korea. Infamous for rigging
>Oceania
Australia never survived the group stage, I believe. Anyone else except New Zealand never even came close to qualifying. Australia is a member of the Asian Football Confederation now by the way

So all other continents - except the tiny Oceania - have exactly one instance of a semifinal, and there's a caveat to all of them
I think it boils down to organization. A lot of countries love the sport and have the raw talent, but no one can develop it systematically like Europe and South America. Especially Europe will probably always have the best facilities and coaching
But it is still strange when looking at how popular the sport is

that's just russia/soviet union being in two continents thing again. same with handball
>>
>>154544087
He's counting Russia as both European and Asian for some reason. It's okay geographically speaking, but in sports terms, it does not work. That's why handball, the most Euro sport ever overall (despite it being limited to a few regions), is also at 2, for example

>sports where the creating country has only one championship
>>
>>154544110
surely some of the players are from Asian Russia
>>
>>154544060
Technically they make everyone on the team a world champion and I know there was an Italian on the team when the Rams won it a few years ago so that would be two at least
>>
>>154543935
Very interesting
This is only for male.sports, right?
>>
>>154544060
Japan won the world championship
>>
>>154544172
yeah
one thing that surprised me a bit is that no man from Asia has won a slam in tennis, from my research anyway, I even checked the Russians individually. You'd think some Asian would have won one by now
>>
Golf is surprising. Running, swimming and fighting are basic sports but golf is elitist. But then again younhave 5 continents in formula 1
>>
>>154544200
much like soccer, tennis is played by europeans. when europeans play something they will be the best at it. this is why soccer only has two continents as world champions, the rest of the world cannot compete with europe.
>>
>>154544137
Actually rather unlikely, I believe. More unlikely than the 80/20 distribution between continents. They mostly recruit their athletes from the European part, especially Moscow. Maybe they got better in recent years, but the further you go back (and it’s been a while since they won in these sports), the more clear it is
>>
>>154544283
Ah, a few were born in Sverdlovsk Oblast, which is technically barely Asia if you use the Ural as the border (for which there is no real reason beyond Europe having to end somewhere so that Asia begins, as opposed to a somewhat clear cut like the Darien Gap). These players are all European (Russian) by ethnicity, though some may have some Tatar stuff mixed in
Also, I admittedly forgot about the Soviet era, lol. For example, Talant Dujshebaev was a legendary handballer who won the World Championship with the USSR. He’s Kyrgyz
>>
>>154544356
yeah I was checking rosters and hockey seems pretty big in the Chelyabinsk/Yekaterinburg area, some guys from the far east too though.
Basketball is definitely mostly European, and in the Soviet area a bunch of guys from the Baltics and also Georgia.

>>154543935
West Indies makes cricket 6 continents if you want to count the Americas as 2 continents, West Indies is on both

very cool
heckin vibrant and diverse, wholesome 100
>>
>>154545040
You missed the bit where it said ‘world champion’
>>154545063
I wouldn’t count the WTC as ‘world champions’ considering how SA gamed the flawed system used to make the final.
>>
>>154547073
It’s literally World Test Championship. It’s a more accurate description of the champion of cricket than any limited overs stuff

Funny that you don't remember that Australia got to R16 in '06 when you where hosting.
In fact, they got arguably refballed against Italy. They could very well had made it to QF.

Siberia is mostly populated by Slavs.

Slavs living there are still Europeans.
>>
>>154548463

Oh, true. My bad, sorry
I was in kindergarten when watching 2006 (which means I am an "unc"), but I should have remembered their game against Italy from later folklore

Australia faced Argentina in the round of 16 in 2022
>>
guys this is purely geographic boundaries, even if those are somewhat arbitrary. y'all always trying to make things about race
>>
>>154555151
Geographic makes sense desu. Some countries do lie in both. Turkey and Egypt would qualify as well.
>>
>>154549341
I think you’ll find England, Australia, NZ, South Africa and the West Indies were all playing cricket before Indians: You fucking idiot.
>>
>>154555333
It’s just that no one would see a Russian World Cup win as a win for Asia, even if all their players were from Vladivostok
>>
>>154543935
Kinda sad that baseball reached its ceiling unless Australia some day produces 9 Bazzanas
>>
>>154557175
hockey is also at its ceiling.
rugby has Argentina.
cricket arguably already has South Africa as a world champ.
basketball, Australia I guess, better chance than at baseball. Also Sudan or something.
cycling, I went with grand tour wins, arguably should be 6 already because Chris Froome was born and raised in Africa, but he represented Britain. If it's just tour de france Asia is missing also.

>>154545519
It seems like bad writing that all the land was on one side and the entire rest of the planet was just a big ocean until the land conveniently spread out evenly. I prefer the idea that the supercontinent, if there was one, made up pretty much the entirety of the planet's surface and spread out due to the entire thing expanding in size somehow, filling the gaps created with ocean water. It would explain the supposed evidence of distant continents once being in contact without the retardery of the lopsided single continent ocean planet.
>>
>>154560693
British education, everybody.
>>
>>154563130
Not everyone went to grad school, anon. Lay off.
>>
>>154543935
Has track and field as a whole really produced 6 world champion continents? Individual events sure but the whole thing?

Snooker has done 4, with 5 represented in the final (South Africans have been runner up twice).
>>
>>154563267
What do you mean „the whole thing“?
>>
>>154563368
The country with the best medal count at the world championship. Otherwise its just a function of there being loads of champions. If football created 30 different champions every world cup I reckon they might have a few more continents.
>>
>>154563398
yeah it's just whoever has won a gold (at the olympics)
the individual sports all have a way larger sample size than the team sports. Baseball's sample size is 6, track and field is over 1000, boxing is probably over 1000 also
