Do we like moneyball teams on this board?
Problem, moneybag clubs?
>>154648658How are they moneyball?
Only if it's based toad boehly writing fat cheques. Don't really care for his shit team though.
>>154648676Brighton & Hove Albion’s "Moneyball" approach, spearheaded by owner Tony Bloom and his data company StarLizard, uses advanced analytics to identify undervalued players globally, enabling the club to compete with elite Premier League teams despite a significantly lower net spend. By focusing on technical data over reputation and selling high, they consistently generate massive profits while maintaining top-half finishes.Data-Driven Recruitment: Using proprietary data from StarLizard, Brighton identifies players in overlooked leagues whose metrics suggest high potential, often replacing sold stars with cheaper, data-backed alternatives.Strategic Selling: The club excels at selling players at peak value (e.g., Caicedo, Mac Allister) and efficiently replacing them, reinvesting profits to maintain team performance.High-Performance Metrics: Despite having one of the lowest wage bills in the league during their rise, they achieved 6th (2022/23) and 8th (2024/25) place finishes. Unearthing Hidden Gems: Success stories include recruiting players for low fees who then become Premier League stars, often finding talent in South America or smaller European leagues. Results and Impact Cost-Effectiveness: Brighton has maintained one of the lowest cost-per-point ratios in the Premier League, frequently outperforming clubs with much higher budgets.Sustained Success: The model has transitioned the club from relegation candidates to consistent top-half finishers and European contenders.Industry Model: Along with Brentford, Brighton is widely recognized as a leader in data-driven football, showcasing a sustainable alternative to the "big six" spending model.
>owner made money from the gambling industry which is pure evil>all that woke "LE DATA" nonsense >prioritizing foreign players instead of developing local talent in your academy >hiring hipster managers who play "attractive football" to appeal to the reddit crowd>basically act like a supermarket for big clubs>base your entire existence on being as mediocre as possible without any real ambition or desire to win anything while marketing yourself as le plucky underdog It's unironically clubs like this that are killing the game, not oil clubs. they treat football like an industry not a sport, they add nothing of value, they have no personality and everything about them is soulless
>>154648733>>base your entire existence on being as mediocre as possible without any real ambition or desire to win anything while marketing yourself as le plucky underdogThis is easily the saddest bit of it all. And Brighton's only genuine rivals managed to win something before they did. That rival could be on course to win two trophies + the Community Shield in the space of a year. Meanwhile Brighton have taken zero of the opportunities presented to them to actually win something. Worst one was the 2023 FA Cup when they shat themselves against Ten Bald's United at Wembley.
>>154648733Before he took over Brighton were a perennial 3rd tier club, sometimes flirting with the 4th, they were homeless and either had to groundshare or play at an athletics stadium in front of 3 men and a dog. I reckon they'll take not being liked by Egyptian plastics over that.
>>154648830Yeah Palace had it right, they're everything a midtable club should aspire to be>>154648909So their "success" is entirely artificial and everything about them is manufactured, good for them I guess
>>154648733>It's unironically clubs like this that are killing the game, not oil clubsThis, they suck the life and excitement out of the sport.
>>154648952>So their "success" is entirely artificial and everything about them is manufactured, good for them I guessNo, they actually were quite successful by their standards back in the pre-PL days. They even got to the Cup final in 1983 and almost beat United. "And Smith must score!" entered footballing folklore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q4S1t2oVcA. After that they imploded.Tony Bloom transformed them from a club who were literally one game away from exiting the Football League altogether to a PL mainstay, and I don't think anyone can argue against that change being bad. The problem I have with them is they don't have the ambition to actually win something. They even managed to bottle winning the Championship title a decade ago.
>>154648952Not really, they've never broken FFP rules afaik. Their success is based on being good at scouting and coaching, actual sporting things rather than based on having the most south east asian noodle partners. Most of Bloom's investment went into the stadium and training facilities.
>>154648733>prioritizing foreign players instead of developing local talent in your academyDunk, Ferguson, Hinshelwood, March and Tasker would all disagree with you.
>>154649510Ah yes, that famous Brighton-born lad Evan Ferguson
