Xavi & Iniesta also had slightly different roles than Kroos & Modric in function of the teams around them, but ultimately each pair was the creative engine of their respective team and were tasked with controlling the squad's tempo and delivering the Ball safely to their forwards. It's just in that specific aspect of the game (controlling the tempo), there has never been a midfielder better than Xavier Hernández.
