Alonso was kissing up to Real Madrid, and when they tossed him aside, he thought Liverpool would come running back to him. He spent all that time waiting for their call, but FSG refused to reach out on principle. The feeling was that Xabi always saw us as a backup plan, and that really stung the board. At the end of the day, it's speculation, but I do feel like there might be some truth to this.
Now Pep's leaving, we might get an Arteta-Alonso rivarly.
