Is climbing Mount Everest a sport?
>>
EXTREMELY SPORTS >>>/xs/
>>
It hasn't been a sport in 50 years
>>
>>154748261
I opened this thread to say it would only be a sport if you were racing against other people. So maybe it is a sport after all.

It's actually possible to walk all the way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro without doing any climbing at any point. However, you have to book a tour and it takes a week to walk up it. The tour not only comes with guides, but also chefs who cook all your meals for you and things. I would argue that that is not a sport.

Sounds comfy ngl. /spee/limanjaro trip when?
>>
every serious mountain climber agrees it isn't. All you need is stamina. A reasonably fit, untrained climber can reach the top. That's why so many elderly, disabled people, children, and even a guy in a fucking hospital bed did it. No amateur with a sherpa carrying his tent and oxygen tank is reaching the K2 summit.

But would you like to join Mount Kilimanjaro with me?
>>
for me, it's boulder
>>
>>154748261
that would be 100K dollars plus tip
>>
>>154751202
I'd love to do something like that but I get altitude sickness :(

Ever since the third world has become safe enough for white haired Americans and Europeans to go on vacations to, climbing epic mountains has lost the romance.
When some feisty Britons or a courageous American wrote a vivid article about going darkest Africa or the mystical Orient to scale a mountain of untold legend and height, it was something epic, New York would give you a parade, your pictures published in Magazines and your arrival in any town met with great fanfare.
Today it's just something for middle class fitbros and women who look like Marjorie Taylor Greene train to do for a vacation they can do once they can go on vacations without kids

Whats our next frontier, white fren?

Antarctic Ultramarathons.

>that would be 100K dollars plus tip plus three frostbitten toes
>>
>>154748242
if there is a no referees then it's not a sport, it's a hobby.
>>
>>154748242
People climb this shit and pray to not die during the night but will shit on cave divers lmao.
>>
>>154748242
I climb mountains and have submitted summited the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states multiple times. It is definitely a sport and one of the hardest. Took me 15 hours to finish round trip. When I finished I felt like I was high on shrooms
>>
>>154751538
That's easily combated with an Aspirin

Kili still kills more people than any other mountain most years. Yes, it's because more people climb it than most mountains but it's still quite possible to die there, mostly of altitude related issues, but rock slides or wandering off the side of a cliff happens too. It's not a technical climb but still not something most westerners are able to do simply because it's about a week of walking all day, the latter days at lower oxygen. The average westerner would crap out at the lowest first night camp.
"Chef" is correct if you call the guy at the grocery store deli a chef. You can pay for a porter who will boil pasta in water for you and carry up some cans of Milo for you to mix into a drink. The actual luxury are the porters who carry your tent and chairs, vastly reducing how much weight you have to carry yourself.

Diamox worked pretty well for me. I only had issues during the summit attack. A year later I had trouble at much lower altitudes in Ecuador when I skipped the Diamox.

All of you are talking here like summitting a 8k would be like walking to a park lmao. What a bunch of fucking idiots. I bet none of you ever did a 4k or even a 3k.

Yeah it changes a lot going with sherpas and suplement oxygen. But this changes when professional athletes like for example Ueli Steck or Benjamin Vedrines do it.

Don't compare professional alpinism with a fucking trip to a resort. It takes a lot and lots of training, endurance and technical skills for ropes and so.

It shows how 0 idea of this all of you have. It's not Annapurna or K2 but it takes a lot of lives there because they are not enough prepared even If they are experienced and trained. It takes a loooot to fight the weather, crevasses, exhaustion, dehydration and more. And the Death Zone is not a walk to the park.
>>
And not to talk about the descend which is always the hardest part.
>>
why wypipo do shit like this and cave diving?
>>
it's the season right now
>>
>>154753770
adrenaline, same reason why import thirdies.
>>
>>154749357
Do you actually have to book in for that? What if I just start walking up there, is it gated or something?
>>
>>154748242
I climbed up on to your aul one last night
That was a sport let me tell you
>>
>>154754566
well, you trek 3 weeks to the basecamp. I coukld imagine some napalese police or military checkpoints that wants to see your permit
>>
>>154754662
Ok, I’ve no intention of doing something so stupid anyway I was just wondering.

This is insane cope that poorfags use in an attempt to "bring down" the people who climb Everest.

no
but cheese rolling is a sport
>>
>>154754866
K2 is something else, just the fact its so far from anywhere habitable that it doesn't have a real name
>>
>>154753719
It's the "hardest" part because morons get past their point of no return but keep on to the summit instead of turning back. They think if they can just make it to the summit, the descent will take care of itself. Then they die and become a landmark instead of a warning, as others do the same stupid thing. Dying on the descent is almost always due to a bad decision on the ascent.

Climb Kailash, you pussies. No one has ever made it to the summit.
>But the locals say its too holy to climb.
When has that ever stopped the white man? It's just an excuse.
>>
>>154753719
If you know your limits the descent is much, much easier than the ascent
>>
more like gay2
>>
I once did 5 laps around the football track
>>
>>154753719
How so? Just bring a sled
>>
>>154756311
climbing Everest, on a route that's roped up all the way to the summit, with supplemental oxygen, everything carried by porters, is an amazing achievement for fat retired dentists, not serious climbers and alpinists

nobody cares
also, commercial expeditions to Everest arent hugely more expensive than other 8000m peaks
>>
>>154765126
>not serious climbers and alpinists
no one is achieving shit anymore, retard. it has all been climbed.
>>
>>154765825
everything cept your mom
>>
>>154765825
Not Kailash.
