The whole group stage is basically an on-site qualification period for the actual World Cup. When it was a 32-team tournament (32 was pushing it; 24 was perfect), every game w a historical event in and of itself. Going to South Korea vs Ghana in a 32-team World Cup would be a historical event. If something interested happened in it, people around the world would remember it because hundreds of millions would inevitably be watching.
