City won the league in previous seasons when they had big injuries to Kompany, De Bruyne and Aguero. City have set a ridiculous standard over the years where you need an incredibly stacked bench in order to win the league. If they've fallen short by their own standards then that can't really be used as an excuse anymore, especially given that they have the highest wage bill in the league.

Yep quality player and vital to England in the World Cup this summer
>>
>>154848782
The point is that City have usually been smart enough with their transfers that they have suitable replacements to cope with big absences in the team. Their overreliance on one player is what has cost them, and they only have themselves to blame given that this is the standard they themselves have set for PL champions since Guardiola started dominating this league.

Compare that to Arsenal this season. Saka has been carrying injuries throughout the season, and while Madueke is nowhere near his level, he has been good enough to keep Arsenal competitive in Saka's absence. Likewise, Odegaard has been injured a lot but they could play Eze instead.

In the last 2 or 3 seasons City have bought a number of random players for like 25-50m and I don't think any of them has been stand out at all. Donnarumma and Cherki maybe being the only exceptions but that might just be recency bias. A lot of others have just been sort of okay I think. Doku, Nunes. Marmoush, etc. Maybe I have unrealistic expectations for City to find random players that get transformed into amazing players because of Pep but the last few seasons have been rather lacklustre for them imo.

>>154848905
One can only hope. Someone was suggesting making the attacking players be outside the 6 yard box until the ball is played. Don't know how it'll look in practice though. And they'd have to test it out in "lesser" leagues as well so whatever solution they'll find will take at least a season to be implemented I imagine.
>>
>>154848981
Why not just have the ref do his job when a keeper is surrounded?

>>154848981

I still can't work out why he's been played as a right back all this time. He was never a right back at Wolves.
>>
Howling at the picture of Casemiro posing with his man of the match awards to make his Man United career look good. Meanwhile Bernardo Silva and John Stones' farewell pictures had them surrounded by actual trophies.
>>
>>154849002
That would require the referees to do their jobs consistently for one and actually be held responsible for two so that'll never happen.

>>154849005

>"He [Nunes] can become a good right-back for his physicality," Guardiola told reporters at Old Trafford. "I think he's not a player to play in midfield because he's not clever enough, in the composure, but he has incredible skills and he's learning a lot.

>"The big mistake of full-backs is when you have the cross to the far post where you are, they are always sleeping.

>"But he defended really well two or three crosses, like when Bruno [Fernandes] put it to the far post for [Patrick] Dorgu.

>"He has the attention and the physicality to do it, so he can play in that position and help us a lot."
>>
>>154849046
He (Nunes) dodges a penalty or a red card every other game. Apparently BBC thinks he was the best RB in the league this season.
>>
>>154849083
He has got better at making less dumb errors in the second half of the season and I can't really name a RB in the premier league that has been better (more consistent) than him this season

Wesley Fofana is the worst transfer in Premier League history.

People will point to Antony, Lukaku or Pogba but at least all of them have at least a kernel of talent to see why they cost so much (yes, even Antony). With Fofana, there is nothing. If you watched him, you would think he was an academy graduate to make up the numbers. And if you thought he wasn't, he would be £30m player at the absolute maximum. Instead he is a £75 million transfer. Such financial criminality needs a police investigation.

>>154849808
I was right in thinking his transfer was messy. Wolves bought him for 38m pounds in August 2022. When the 23/24 season started, City made a bid of 47m pounds and Wolves rejected. Nunes stopped going to training to force Wolves' hand. On deadline day, 1st of Sept, City bought him for 53m. And he made his debut on the 16th of Sept. So he basically had no real time to get to City's level because the season had already started and it's a big leap from Wolves to City. But Wolves somehow managed to make a tidy 15m profit off him after only one year. Kinda weird case all around. I don't remember him being all that amazing in Wolves either.
>>
>>154849744
and that's Salah nerfed by Arne Slot
>>
>>154849986
City's recent history of midfield transfers is abysmal. Nunes, Philips, Nico Gonzalez, Reijnders all flops. But also Nunes was a last minute panic buy after Rice and Bellingham both snubbed City and then the Paqueta deal also fell through, so people didn't really have high expectations for him.

That's what I was saying before. Feels like they're all just okay at best. Not really bad but not good either. Definitely not up to City's level but maybe that's just a case of Rodri, Gundogan, KDB and all being incredibly good and too high a bar to reach.

More bad news for the Class of 92 after Salford got pumped at Wembley this afternoon:

>Portland Timbers have confirmed that they have parted company with head coach Phil Neville by mutual consent.

>Neville's final match in charge was Sunday's 3-1 defeat to San Jose Earthquakes that left the Timbers third from bottom in the Western Conference, eight points adrift of an automatic MLS play-offs spot.

>Speaking on Monday, Neville, 49, thanked all those involved with the club for his time in Oregon but conceded that he had failed to deliver the results required this term.

>"I realise we are in a results business, and the results haven't been to the expectation of this football club," Neville said.

The Striker situation is bad because we have Solanke but this guy wont stop getting injured. Also cut off Romero. I think he is done with the club and we should be too. Its best to part ways with him. Hopefully he is amazing at the world cup and we can get 80mil+ for him from Real Madrid or something. Then we go and get someone much younger to go with VDV. I feel safe with Kinsky and the rest. I think next season >WE need to push for conference or Europa league. That should be the objective. I think. As long as the play is good and >WE finish midtable i will be happy with De Zerbi.

What's Chelsea's problem with signing a prolific striker? After Frank "Lamps" Lampard they're like pre-WWII or something up until Drogba. While Drogba scored important goals he wasn't prolific at scoring.
They buy players like Crespo and Shevchenko and murder them. They get someone who starts well like Costa and he wants to get out of there faster than a Liverpool player knowing a Spanish club are interested. What's the deal?

wirtz must have a monster season otherwise this team is doomed, they can't keep scamming FK from szobo every games
>>
>>154854852
Yes big fan of this except I do wonder if there’s a slightly better option for the big midfield signing than tonali, although I’m not against him, mind. Anderson appears nailed on for city and tchouameni won’t be realistically leaving Madrid, so tonton (I’m thinking that will be his new nickname) might be the guy
>>
>>154855085
I think Tonali is the best available for profile and premier league experience. Anderson seems city bound otherwise he would be perfect. Not heard about this Tonton.

Maybe, but I mean they won and now Pep is gone. I feel like you can put to rest any of the psychological stuff you might use to poke holes in them. They got the City/bottle monkey off their back

Who would be the favorite in your mind then. City?

With the season over, BBC Salford get desperate: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ckgppvz2z8yo

>Legendary Argentina World Cup winner Angel di Maria has blamed his unhappy spell at Manchester United on former boss Louis van Gaal.

>In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Di Maria says Van Gaal zeroed in on negatives in his game, never the positives, which led him to "hate" being at Old Trafford.

>"Things started really well," said Di Maria. "Everything was flowing. Then I started to have issues with Van Gaal and from there everything fell apart."

>Van Gaal played him in both wide positions, but also used Di Maria in the number 10 role and as a midfielder because he felt the player wasn't doing the job he had been asked to fulfil.

This interview would have felt dated in 2016, let alone 2026.

24/25 Chelsea numbers
>491m revenue
>359m wages
>214m amortisation
This number rises every year because of 8 year contracts
>343m UEFA budget (70%)
Failing this again triggers an £80m fine, transfer and UEFA competitions ban

116% of budget, would be an automatic points deduction with no appeal next season

The only reason the fine was so large was because after admitting it and saying to the press they'd help with the investigation, they stopped sending any documentation and didn't help at all

He means they will 'ban' themselves by failing to qualify for UEFA comps. Which they did this year.

Nottingham Forest set a precedent that breaking the rules and getting a points deduction is perfectly fine, as long as the points you gain from cheating outnumber the points you get deducted as a penalty. Everyone cheered them on when they avoided relegation and qualified for Europe by breaking financial rules, now watch as other teams copy them.
>>
>>154860822
It is actually a large fine in footballing terms, you're conflating it with other figures in football but it's a large fine

For me it’s the £400m loan with 13% compounding interest. Not allowed to pay it back early as it counts as a loss for the club. Same reason WBA were deducted points this year except it will cost around a Billion by the time they sell the club. Also owe a separate £755m to JP Morgan to be paid within 1 year, extension declined.

It's honestly ridiculous how so many of the most expensive PL signings have been complete flops. The only ones that have actually hit the ground running and significantly improved their team since their arrival (which is what you'd expect when you spend that much) have been Rice, Van Dijk and maybe Gvardiol.
