They should modify the facial hair policy to where every player must shave the morning of the season opener, and they can grow it out for the rest of the season if they desire to do so. And when a player is acquired through trade, they must shave the morning of their first game with the Yankees, and they can grow it out for the rest of the season.

White Sox @ Guardians series update:
Current magic numbers: CWS 10, CLE 14
If CWS sweeps: CWS 6, CLE 14
If split next 2: CWS 8, CLE 12
If CLE wins 2: CWS 10, CLE 10
>White Sox have a game in hand and the tiebreaker, so it would come down to whoever has the better record in the final 3 series

CWS remaining schedule: 4 vsDET, 3 @KCR, 3 vsCOL
CLE remaining schedule: 3 vsATH, 3 @BOS, 3 @KCR

The real reason MLB owners want a cap isn't because of the Dodgers or baseball being pay to win, it's because NFL and NBA have seen +160% increases in team valuation in the last 5 years while MLB is around 50%-60% increase and it's mainly because NFL and NBA have capped labor costs. Same reason owners want to downsize the minors and get colleges to develop the younger players and cut costs, and yes owners are willing to lose a season over this because the increase in team valuation from a salary cap will make up for the lost revenue.

I'm sure that's the thinking behind the owners now. But ownership has been trying to institute a salary cap since the early 70s. They and the players union have been fighting over this for close to 60 years, ever since the Reserve Clause was struck down. And they've been fighting over player salaries as far back as 1890.

right now, a .500 baseball team would be
>0.5 games back in the American League (Junior Circuit)
>7 games back in the Nation League (Senior Circuit)
but I don't understand how this disparity would get worse after the NL adopted the designated hitter. there's literally no difference between the two leagues, and it's really hard to say that the NL teams are more attractive because of, what, location? are better owners that give out friendlier deals concentrated in the NL? the mets just got eliminated while the mariners (same record btw) have an E# of 7. I don't get why.

fact check: false
any mlb that makes the postseason has a much more realistic chance at winning than the other major sports. its basically impossible in the nba and nhl because you have to play so many games. in the nfl its always an elimination game so more plausible. but mlb games are much more like dice rolls, and even though the season is so long, the postseason is way too short which lends itself to happenstance. every series should be 7 games and get rid of these retarded one game wildcard playoffs

This simply isn’t true. Every sport has some element of randomness. The only reason people think baseball in particular has so much randomness is because the regular season is so long. If the NFL season was 162 games (if we could wave a wand to make injuries non-existent, of course), the same people would be saying “football is so random!!!!!!11111!!!1111!!!!!” when, no it’s not, not anymore tang any other sport. Playing that many games simply results in weird days for every team.

do you think a football team could fluke a 7 game series

It's regarding the 3 and 5-game elimination series that cause the variance.

Yeah? Why couldn’t they?
>>
Guys...how are the mariners going to get back into the playoff race?

So if the Super Bowl was a best of three series, that would lead to randomness?

I’m saying it’s happened with the Mets and Marlins before

you think pete carroll would call for a throw on the 1 yard line with 26 seconds left instead of giving the ball to beast mode for 7 games in a row?

It would lead to less variance because it's starting from a point of 1 single game elimination though still be fairly varied. I'm not saying I'm correct, just explaining my statement.

How does one tard moment from a manager disprove my point?

So then you’re saying football is just as random as any other sport?
>>

Think of it like this, NL is Big 10, AL is SEC. NL is more attractive
>>
>>157757532
I'm not using that phrase. I am talking strictly about statistical variance in sports.
>>
>>157757540
What’s SEC, bruh?
>>
>>157757522
they only play 1 game so 1 tard moment can fluke a game so it appears as random
but in baseball they play 7 games and still have flukes
which btw you didn't dispute so you actually admit that baseball is at least 7 times more fluky than football
>>
>>157757543
That’s exactly my point. Variance is just a fact of sport.
>>
>>157757553
There is more variance in football than in baseball and more variance in baseball than in other sports besides football.
>>
>>157757552
A tard moment doesn’t mean a fluke, it just means tard moment. And those two teams were super evenly matched anyway.
I did dispute it when I said that a 7 game series in the NFL playoffs wouldn’t lead to less flukes. It wouldn’t matter if it were a 51 game series, there would still be flukes. Don’t put words in my mouth, Danish jeet.
>>
>>157757470
They need to win 9 of 11 to have any shot. Running the table gives them a decent chance of winning the division, but even then they need help.
>>
>>157757586
There would still be flukes but there chance of impacting the entire series would be limited. Are you retarded anon?
>>
>>157757586
so how come teams can go undefeated in the NFL but an all time great MLB regular season team still lose 30% of their games?
by your logic a team should be able to go 162-0
>>
>>157757619
Yes I am, but that doesn’t have an effect on my argument.
There would still be flukes. It would operate under the same principle as teams getting hot during the regular season.
>>
>>157757623
That’s just too many damn games to go undefeated. If the NFL season was 162 games, there wouldn’t be any undefeated teams. And, on the contrary, if the MLB season was 16 games, there would be undefeated teams.
I’m starting to think you’re trolling.

OK, so your point is that baseball is just as random as other sports but you’re actually wrong because baseball is extremely varied in outcomes. I mean seriously what is your point?

All sports have flukes and an element of randomness but it’s still talent and skill that usually win.
Baseball has just as many flukes as other sports which is not a whole lot.

No, baseball has the same amount. THAT’S THE POINT.

are you black by any chance?
>>
>>157757703
What are the other sport(s)? is it more varied than table tennis? How about figure skating? What an odd generalized statement. Sure, it's not as varied as football. But it's still proven to be highly varied. I don't think anyone cares that it's more or less varied than anything. The point is that it's varied enough to generate varied outcomes on a yearly basis and that's bad.
>>
>>157757675
>takent and skill usually win
In baseball, a team’s true talent level can only be determined by their regular-season record and how much excitement the plays that they make generate (ex: walk off grand slam generates tangible excitement while an inning-ending double play generates negative excitement). And there have been an overwhelming majority of times when the team with the highest talent level does not win playoff games. So your whole spiel about talent and skill usually winning is totally incorrect.
>>
>>157757703
baseball is more random because of 2 reasons:
1) there are more actions happening, meaning there are more plays
2) there are more games that compound the greater amount of action per play
baseball is both inherently more chaotic and more inherent by virtue of a greater number of data
of course, that also means that the randomization is more easily navigable and regression toward the mean is more predictable
>>
>>157757709
So you really think talent and skill have zero bearing here on the playoffs? Really? If that were true, then why would every player’s dream be to win the World Series?
Also, you contradicted yourself. You said “the overwhelming majority of times, the team with the highest skill level does not win playoff games”. So you think there is a negative correlation between playoff success and skill? I’m sorry but that’s retarded. And, if the playoffs were truly random, that would mean the highly skilled teams would win just as much as the low skilled teams. It would be 50/50.
>>
>>157757712
I’m as white as they come.
And you’re misunderstanding again. I’m saying that baseball does have flukes, but only just as many flukes as other sports do.
>>
>>157757726
I meant other team sports, really just the big ones like hockey, basketball and football.
>the point is that it's varied enough to generate varied outcomes on a yearly basis and that's bad

>>
>>157757756
Let me tell you what my statement is based on OK. Since 1999, we have an incredible accumulation of regular season data and corresponding postseason outcomes. So since 1999 the only teams (based on their true talent level, which in this case is the regular season record + their excitement generated) those teams have only won a handful of times since 1999: they won in 2004, in 2009, in 2017, in 2018, in 2020, and also 2024. And this is beside the point, but you can make the argument that 2017/2018 and 2020 shouldn’t even really be considered because for the simple fact that well teams were using unfair advantages in 2017 and 18 and also there was a shortened season for 2020. Based on this selection of teams, we can conclude that the overwhelming majority of the time the most talented team, does not win the World Series/playoff games you can refute that if you want, but these are my points.
>>
>>157757748
Not denying that the number of games leads to randomness, but that would be the same for every sport if it had the same number of games as baseball.
Also, I’d actually argue football and hockey have more moving parts per play than baseball. Football have basically every player on the field in a full on sprint every play and there is a ton of timing involved with the quarterback timing throws and the running back timing gaps. And hockey players have less control of the puck since it’s on ice, leading to randomness.

Yes, this is true, but it goes for other sports as well which is exactly my point. Usually the best NFL team does not win the Super Bowl.
And, even in the MLB, the World Series winner is usually one of the two top seeds in each league. The four top teams are so evenly matched that the outcome can’t even really be called a fluke anyway.
>>
>>157757850
chances are we all have a little bit of jeet in us. indus valley is one of the oldest civilizations, alexander's civilization mixed with them heavily, and ranjit singh's sikh empire was highly regarded in its day (and visited by westerners)

>>
>>157757813
>>157757919
my apologies, my excellent fellow

football has fewer plays though it's certainly more explosive on average per play
hitting a baseball is much harder than completing a pass. this is why you are an elite hitter if you can consistently hit .300 (70% fail rate). no other sport has something that matches that sort of "low" mark as a reflection of how difficult the activity is

hockey is inherently less random due to greater control time. baseball is not about control - it's about constantly dodging the other person's ability to even potentially take control
>>
>>157757939
Top four because they compete in the league championship series. And also because the third division winner is usually a meh team.

But then that would make football more random. If a bad team can complete a huge number of passes, then that leaves the door open to flukes.
But if even a good team fails 70% of their at-bats while a bad team fails maybe as high as 85-90%, then that’s a huge difference that can further be exacerbated by pitching.
Also, I’m not sure what you mean by control time and dodging another team’s ability to take control.
>>
>>157757986
What can be done about this?
>>
flockie jeet makes no sense
>>
>>157757827
Are you actually retarded? Even a football team that knew which plays the opposition was running would be capable of losing a 7 game series. It doesn’t make up for skill or athletic ability.
>>
>>157758001
football is not more random because football - nor any other sport - has something like baseball where a high watermark of success is a 70% failure rate. that inherently introduces tons of realized chaos
also, a baseball game will have, at minimum, 54 plate appearances. that is generally equivalent to the number of passes both quarterbacks make in a fairly active game while that is the absolute minimum, least active baseball game (concerning hitting vs passing). it would not even be comparable if we compare passing attempts to pitching attempts
lastly, we must not conflate a hitter with a team; that is a parts-and-whole fallacy. an elite hitter consistently fails less than about 70% of the time. an elite hitting team consistently fails less than about 74% of the time. despite that seeming like a small percentage, it is a massive variable
for instance, the Rays have the highest BA this season at around .260: https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/team
no team fails 85-90% of the time, but I think the point you mean to make supports the argument for baseball being inherently more random since failing even marginally more (by percentage) is actually a massive difference by raw numbers
by control time & dodging another team's ability to take control, I mean that the purpose of baseball is to deny the other team an opportunity to even make a play. to put it in football terms, you optimally want to make it such that the quarterback never encounters resistance. in baseball terms, that means a pitcher's baseball, once thrown, is ideally never made contact with to begin a contact-induced play. chasing that purity introduces an incalculable amount of randomness
>>
>>157757938
Out of roughly 30 seasons since modern playoffs began, a "Top 2 vs. Top 2" matchup has only happened about 20% of the time.
>>
>>157757938
In the other 80% of seasons, at least one league's top two seeds got knocked out early by a lower-seeded division winner or a hot Wild Card team before they could even reach the World Series.
>>
Lauren is ovulating
>>
>>157758047
What does generating excitement have to do with skill? That only correlated to revenue from fans, not team success.
Usually the two top teams in each league are pretty evenly split even if one league is awful. Just look at the AL this year, their two top seeds are pretty even with the NL’s two top seeds.
The four top seeds is not a wide net to cast when there are 30 teams total and 12 make the playoffs.

>>
>>157758091
because excitement generated is based on the plays that are made so a walk off grand slam shows skill because it is a walkoff grand slam, and that thus leads to excitement a team that is fumbling around on the field does not lead to excitement it leads to negative excitement

A no hitter generates positive excitement because of the nature of the skill implied. It is a rare feat.

Grounding into a double play to end your World Series generates negative excitement because it is a unskilled outcome
>>
Excitement is directly generated by skillful plays.
>>
>>157758091
it is a wide net cast because you’re equating the success of four teams as one entity when in reality out of those four teams three of them got eliminated. It’s a 75% failure rate. You’re pretty much using guaranteed success out of a large group of individual team teams, and ignoring the fact that the majority of those individual teams are actually unsuccessful.
>>
all forms of hitting require some luck except bunts which are 100% skill
>>
Luck sequencing is not a sustainable form of hitting
>>
>>157758064
You discuss offense a lot but I think you’re completely negating pitching. Baseball is pretty much the only game that favors the defense, that’s why elite hitters fail 70% of the time. Elite starters and bullpens keep the randomness down. Team success is often more so tied to pitching than offense, it’s why the Nationals did fuck all this year and why the Jays lost the World Series despite out scoring los doyers. A pitcher aim is to keep plate appearances down to the minimum, thus reducing randomness. Starting pitchers (even though there are five) essentially have the same level of importance in baseball as the quarterback does in football. We can therefore say that baseball is no more random than football because both sports place tremendous importance on one position (something I forgot to mention is that football is random partially because the quarterback is a make-or-break).
Kinda conflated teams be players but it was more so a hypothetical.
A few points in BA having a massive impact reduced randomness though because it means a great team is exponentially better than a bad team. And it means a good team is still better than a mediocre team.
Sorry if this came off as a little rude, wasn’t my intention.

>you’re completely negating pitching
your argument fails at the first instance as your premise is provably false. I emphasized that the optimal outcome in baseball hinges on uninteractable pitching
pitching is not inherently defensive. a true ace is its own form of offensive which overlaps with defense, i.e., the best defense is a good offense
anon, do you watch baseball? genuine question because many of the things you say are factually untrue. and I think it is in your best interest to be intellectually honest about that and withdraw from such a protracted debate when you don't understand the nature of a subject that your argument requires knowledge of

>>157758307
I didn't say the best offense is good defense; I said the best defense is good offense. these are complementary but not necessarily equivalent terms. pitchers, especially aces, are known for "attacking" the zone. they "challenge" the hitter with velocity, rotations, horizon/vertical movement, and mind games - in sum, it is an aggressive battle of psyches (e.g., deception) and physicality (e.g., heat)
no ace will tell you that they are going out there to play defense. they are going out there to raze the other team to the ground, a happy byproduct of which is limiting the other team's ability to impose its will. this would be akin to calling a rear naked chokehold submission defense because it limits the opponent's ability to produce offense. no - the more accurate term is imposition of willpower, which is inherently an offensive trait which coincidentally provides defense-consistent outcomes

I am surprised that you love baseball and granted that bad teams can fail 90% of the time. I don't believe a single team in the centuries of recorded baseball has batted .100 over a season

regardless, I appreciate your engagement. it is productive to think about things as esoteric as probability factors and confounding variables in sport
