A few days ago, an Internet Archive collection titled "90s Sample CDs" was DMCA'd. This collection contains many classic sample CDs from the 90s - 00s (Zero-G, Best Service, AKAI, Spectrasonics etc.) and the original archive.org page had over 14,000 views. With the help of a few other people, I have collected around 500 CDs from the original archive, and converted most of them from their original formats. Some of the disc images require proprietary tools to use properly, and will show up as broken or empty if you try to open them in an archiver or mount them as a disc. I have taken the liberty of converting what I can to uncompressed .wav files. Additional information from the original uploader can be found at https://pastebin.com/VaxsxX2a

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:028386da350f4b7f1f3a53b6403f3b717e913bb8&dn=90ssamplecds&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.opentrackr.org%3a1337%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2f9.rarbg.com%3a2810%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexodus.desync.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a6969%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fretracker.lanta-net.ru%3a2710%2fannounce&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopen.stealth.si%3a80%2fannounce&tr=http%3a%2f%2fopenbittorrent.com%3a80%2fannounce

You can also download the torrent file from https://nnty.fun/downloads/torrent/90ssamplecds.torrent
The file list is at https://pastebin.com/0dE05GKE

The total file size is about 343GB, and I am seeding from a gigabit internet connection. At the time of writing I am the only seeder.

What is a sample CD?
>>
>>1058856
Sample CDs are sound libraries, usually centered around a specific theme or music genre, intended for DJs and music producers. They contain high quality audio recordings of various loops, vocals, effects, one-shot instruments, and more. Many of the sample CDs in this archive are considered to have had a great influence on electronic music as a whole, and you may recognize many of the sounds in these CDs not only from electronic music, but also film and video game soundtracks. A good portion of sample CDs from this time were released in proprietary formats for specific hardware samplers, and converting them to something like WAV in a modern operating system often requires the use of poorly programmed, proprietary software. In the present day, sample libraries are distributed through purchasable downloads in lossless formats like WAV, AIFF etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_(music)
https://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/10-classic-sample-libraries-that-changed-music-631133
>>
>>1058856
I will also add that many older sample libraries contained uncleared samples, that is, samples of audio that were not cleared for use by the copyright holder of the original work. Many samples in these libraries were simply taken from other works of electronic music, which means a lot of these CDs are no longer officially available to purchase from the companies legally. Many of these CDs are, or at least, were hard to find on the internet before the archive.org collection was made. It should also be noted that the DMCA notice was only targeting a small minority of the whole collection, however it still resulted in the entire archive being removed.

Yes. You can upload whatever the fuck you want, basically. Many people archive things from old shareware CDs to entire youtube channels. Music, video, software, games, art, everything.

The files that you can store in https://archive.org are divided into different collections (texts, audio, movies, software, pictures, etc) and these collections are different from the web content captured by crawlers that hosts the wayback machine, which would come to be a separate section within the Internet Archive. To upload files you must register an account.

Uh, I just checked that list and I see that a lot of those sample packs were not included in this torrent. It really is all messed up.
>>
>>1061542
Well, they pretty much have the 90ssamplecds collection from the archive, and the link above is a different collection by the same uploader. Authors of this torrent and anyone involved at any capacity, bless you!
Many are still available (I haven't encountered any specific item yet that isn’t available) but may need to be rearchived. Whether this is worthy of a torrent is up to interpretation. They don’t fit any theme like 90ssamplecds.
Lastly, if anyone knows of any unavailable sample CD to this torrent I will search my HD for it and upload it here.
>>1060884
Both were removed because they contained a specific few infringing items from one organization. You can use the wayback machine on his forum’s main page to see which it was

What about the torrent file generated by Internet Archive itself? It should be the complete torrent, no need to curate (but without your repacking)
>>
>>1068091
The generated torrent of the original 90sSampleCDs item stopped updating since April 2020. The latest version that is known only has 11 GB of sample packs:
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:9a154000908f0509b276d5268c6e98af4717b28e&dn=90ssamplecds

Perhaps the Internet Archive tracker system crashed due to the large size of the item, or cuz some Mod blocked the auto-updater due to some claim or suspicion of copyright infringement.
>>
Probably a stupid question but are these usable for random stuff? or is it all copyrighted?
>>
>>1068154
This is a warning that Spectrasonics sample CDs carry by default:

https://vocaroo.com/1moBw1Llyak4

No matter how old they are, all sample packs are determined by the same license: if you can't prove you have purchased an original copy, you can't legally use them.

Then there is a second problem: even with an original purchase license, many samples have been reported for copyright infringement since their creation. For example, Michel Jarre sued Zero-G for including samples of his music without his authorization in the Datafiles, for this reason Time & Space stopped selling them 20 years ago.

Now does all this matter? Don't many EDM producers continue to use them without giving a shit to anyone? Even many samples that technically violate copyright have become cliché. If you are a producer who wants to market your music, I doubt you have to worry about this shit at this point.
>>
>>1068431
That audio seems brainless to me. What if you lost your license or the original CD after having released your trax? Will they doxx you to know if you are in the history of the store where you bought it? What if the store or website that gave you the original license no longer exists? Will they ask for a search warrant if you refuse to show them your original CD?

Even more: Why would sampling companies harass you for copyright infrigment when they themselves violate it by stealing the samples they sell?

All this is absurd, no wonder no one gives a shit.
>>
Thanks for the reply, dont usually use this type of stuff so im clueless and very scared to use it in general, guess theres not much to worry about mm

Best thing is to delete the magnet link, then download the 80MB .torrent file linked.

THEN

Add it to QBittorent, and watch it crawl, and chew up resources building out the directory.... it will seem like it is locked up, but it will finish!

Greetings from OP. Please do not download this torrent, as others have pointed out it is full of duplicate files, corrupted files, and is generally very poorly organized.
I plan to make a new torrent, as I have spent the past 5 days reorganizing the files, deduplicating, and adding new sample libraries that aren't currently present.
You can view the current state of this archive at https://nnty.fun/downloads/other/90ssamplecds/
Please let this thread die so I can post a torrent that is worth downloading.

might you want to also look into converting mod files (mod archive), or compiling samples from magazines of the time (Future music, etc - a lot on archive.org)
also some lost ones here https://www.dogsonacid.com/threads/old-future-music-magazine-cds.675197/
Also if we pool our resources we could likely get some rarer sampleCDs from traders. I'll try to find some examples but there are a few I've seen
>>
It's also a worthwhile effort to make a torrent for old vsti gems - these links are dropping like flies. vstmuseum is gone, so is the other good site...

If I were to get into audio production, where should I go to learn about copyright and fair-use?

Supposing I wanted to use the files for something professional are there any precautions to take?

in terms of sampling if it can't be recognized then no one can catch u snaggin it, that being said its super muddy. In my experience I rarely see anyone get slapped on hand for using drum samples because its so hard to say "my 808 is clearly on this track" besides some other fl studio dorks but in terms of chords (not owned by anyone), melody gets fuzzy, + arrangements and actual just straight up samples its going to just depend. Obviously if you take someones songs and sample it you're going to have to clear it for distribution or risk getting fucked up the wazoo legally. A lot of ppl sell/make sample packs like the CDs in the torrent on this thread and that also gets into a weird place legally because 1. you should probably at least credit someone if you use their shit they made themselves and you intend distributing it especially for self profit 2. the license they may have on those sounds may require royalties. Everything in here is going to be case by case as is ownership of any sound. Digital music making as well as the old school boomer way in terms of cribbings someones shit has always been about risk-assessment, Led Zeppelin got away with it for the most part so it's just going to depend

https://archive.org/details/spectrasonics-all-legacy-cds

This is every Spectrasonics CD.
24.5GB

You have to click the torrent button under PNG in the download section. I can't for the life of me figure out a way to generate a magnet link.

Point of interest: The Fifth Element score/Soundtrack sampled from Distorted Reality extensively.

Eric Persing's "Iceland 1" became Eric Serra's "Mandoshawan", "The Tattoo", and all of the Divine sound effects come from these samples.

Does the torrent still have the original CD images in it?

I have Akai, Emu, Roland and other samplers and am more interested in the original CDs over WAVs.

Awesome that you got this! I have some CD ISOs and bin/cues but no where near that much.

It does have some, and there's also this torrent which has a lot of the same stuff but also a decent bit that this torrent is missing. It's about 100gb in Akai format and 20 or so in others. There's also a copy of recycle 2.0 which I was only ever able to find in Russian before randomly coming across it here

A bit unrelated but I've been struggling trying to find CDs on archive.org which usually contains bunch of shareware/pirated software/games which occasionally also includes some bunch of random porn/hentai flash or small exe files
Are they even a thing on archive.org? Sometimes I wonder if it's just a case of someone making those CDs and then selling them in stores in Indonesia
