Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97234192>C&C is everything 5 x and 3.x shouldve been. The second half of that sentence is funny in that C&C was 3.0 lite with not a lot of 3.5 influence. D&D 3.x can't have been more C&C like because rule bloat was a TSR thing since the days of AD&D 1e through 2e. It survived due to continuity of development by people working at the bloatiest stage of 2e who already felt they were debloating D&D. If TSR had kept going 4e might never have happened like it did, due to the vidya aspect being inspired by corporate, but there's practically no chance there would have been a leaner rule set like C&C did to 3.x.

>>97243444Of course not. We know roughly that an LRM needs to be able to fly at least at 63 meters per second to reach out to its listed range in hexes, (21 hexes-- 30 meters across-- in 10 seconds). This abstraction at least holds that its average speed cannot be less than this and its maximum speed must exceed this. In short, anything we re-derive from the simplified model of reality on the tabletop can only be relational assumptions based on defined parameters of the game's logic. Any breaks we witness that are not explained by the system or setting must be assumed to be the edges of a simplified simulation and not binding principles of how reality operates. If we apply the largest possible scale of rules to battlemech weapons (space rules) in which hexes are 18 kilometers and rounds are a minute long; the effective range of a ground unit being limited only to their own hex means that the LRM fired by a LCT-1M teleported into the void by a cruel and unjust god, by virtue of reaching the other side of the hex in the round would have to travel at least 300 m/s; which means it STILL isn't assured to break Mach 1 at sea level. It would be supersonic at 2500 meters above sea level by estimate. So, depending on who you ask, LRMs travel at upwards of 60 meters per second or upwards of 300 meters per second. We can't guarantee they'd travel 300 meters per second on the ground because of gravity and drag, but we know that any missile classified as such is doing at least this in either environment if it is capable of doing so in the environment. The LAM example doesn't even prove universally; it only proves that the LAM is equipped with missiles that can do both.
>>97243558Does all that mass take into account soft launch time and all of the complexities of how a missile functions? You're also making the very bold assumption that every single missile flies in a perfectly straight line directly towards it's target, when missiles today even have to jump up to get a top attack on it's target.
Meant to say math, I should go to bed
>>97243582It does only in the respect that these are minimums. In a most ideal world they would need these speeds to reach a stationary target at the maximum extent of their ranges. We are assuming a perfectly spherical cow.I have the inkling that 300+ m/s seems like an appropriate ballpark, as it makes them about as fast as as a number postwar anti-tank missiles.
>>97243558>that the LRM fired by a LCT-1M teleported into the void by a cruel and unjust godOr, you know, was deployed on the deck of its warship transport.
On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.

>>97243586Retard
>>97241451I dont really do aliens for strangeness sake, I dont even consider my aliens that alien but maybe I just got desensitized to them to them to the point I see them as familiar as elves or dwarves. Their designs arent complex messes, they are meant to be modular and laden with variants. Keeping to an 'underlying mentality' that has a lot of flexibility has been what I have been trying for.. Be it a species with a pathological fear of boredom or having trauma from losing members of the individual organisms aggregating (lekgolo inspiration yeah). Of which is meant to be something you can interpret in many ways and still likely be valid as a player due to it being a species with numerous different members who will be pretty different. I didn't make them 'that alien' because they are products of nature and I wanted to contrast simpler, more "innocent" designs with the horror hell postbiological abominations of advanced galactic civs. An AI's psychology is going to be more alien than an intelligent lifeform who evolved from darwinian processes, even if their form isn't a 1:1 to humans.

Meant to post much earlier in the thread, but I suffered a Prometheus Virus outbreak and have only now rebuilt my base population to sufficient levels.Assuming anyone is still monitoring the thread, what are the best campaign premises to use when running an SMAC game, either in GURPS or some other system? Some of my ideas have been:>PCs are a probe team from a single faction or set of pact brothers, and the game plays out like a cyberpunk espionage thriller>PCs are division heads for their (possibly custom) faction, and must use social influence and connections to steer their faction or faction leader in the "correct" direction while also handling their official duties>goofy riff on the above using MAID(?!?), where PCs are vying for the affection of their faction leader>small-scale story about a group of terraformers in the early days after Planetfall, exploring this alien world, discovering its wonders, and trying to build a comfy homestead along the Pholus Ridge

>>97236626You’re underestimating the GW dominance. It doesn’t take a lot to make the top 10. Its also a perfect game alot of people are buying Flashpoint that are not tabletop gamers or buying it to paint alone or just have the box. Halo collectors are actually quite a big market especially since Star Wars died. Its a phenomenally good game I haven’t touched it since last January but I fucking loved it and if I take a notion to play a minis game i’ll be digging it out. If the retards had dropped a strong Covie box alongside the Spartan edition it would be huge in my area we had real traction on release but we did one tournament in January and despite it being really good it just died largely because the Elite players got smoked. Yes they’re strong in objective games but you needed two sword elites to match the Spartan meta and I for one couldn’t afford two Spartan editions to do that. The Banished box was a huge dud that didn’t sell locally or I suspect very well in general but that no dount that was 343 pressure to push infinite. It’s a great game and i’m looking forward to get back into it when theres Grunts, Jackals and Hunters. Pic related my nail varnish drowned Chief.
>>97238770If GC had dropped before Fleet Battles it would have done gangbusters. Instead it dropped around Halo 5 when Halo fans were dropping the series for other things and then like a year later Spartan Games was gone. Fleet Battles was cool but it was appealing to a tiny demographic.
