Simple rule to improve and balance wizards in OSR games: they can only memorize one casting of a given spell per day. You have 3 third level slots? You can cast one Fireball, not 2 or 3. Don't know any other 3rd level spells? Better go find some spellbooks. Hope you make your % chance to learn spell rolls (I won't bother addressing faggots who let wizards automatically learn new spells). God forbid you have to get more creative with your casting.

>Now do the same in SW
>[epic clever battle sequence that lets them add up to kill the enemy golem]
I wish it worked that way, but unfortunately what happens instead is, someone with a hypertuned damage build rushes the golem in melee screaming and gets 5 aces and kills the golem with like 40 damage while the rest of the table laughs hysterically.
I really wish it worked like that though. I can't remember the last time my Savage Worlds group actually used the trick fighting or test of wills rules. All they do is Wild Attack because it's objectively the best option to get 2 bonuses for 1 downside and usually their Parry is so high that even if they do Wild Attack the penalty doesn't actually affect them.
>>
>>97818103
Well i do also think that the optional rule for wounds cap should not be "optional" but what you're describing is also hyperoptimized builds, no rulesystem holds well to the scrutiny of a buildfag, even supposed strict games like d&d 4e get trivialized that way.
>>

I'm not gonna play D&D. And I'm definitely not gonna play D&D with you, anon.
Not all of my ideas turn to have been good, but the ones which were good, I have had no difficulty finding people to play them with me.
Full stop.
>>
>>97814792
It's part of the preparation and planning. Some OSR has more of a 5e preparation - doesn't break the game, but it kinda breaks the feel imho.

>No point playing a magic-user then
youd probably piss your pants trying to play 1e
> Otherwise, you learn spells on level up which is actually balanced
"Its like this, except not!"
Free spell in level up is dogshit hand-holding and not "balanced"
>This is retarded.
No, you just want to be a welfare wizard
>That's terrible game design
no, thats a player skill issue.
>I don't know or care what this is, but that sounds utterly retarded.

Making a thread about scary Yugoloths and why every party should fear them. 100% success rate at taking down PCs and their stupid adventure-ling parties. First off, they'll break all your dumb magic weapons *during combat*. That 15th party of gishes and tanks last about 3 rounds once all their magic is deprived of them.
*499 more reasons to follow not fucking around with Yugoloths coming up*

Look at this beast. It's absolutely 100% a threat on the battlefield. This absolute unit wreaks havoc in combat.

They also secretly direct the Blood War and since it's such a threat, by proxy nearly the entire multiverse too.

I'm looking for one and the PF version looks to be the most powerful version I've ever seen of it.

Piscoloths are the least likely to work alone. As lesser Yugoloths, they are probably headed up by three arcanadaemons and one ultrodaemon. They never fight fair and they will always use overwhelming forces on you. That six summons (other Yugoloths) plus one that can summon almost anything including up to Tiamat.

Why do OSR boomers act like their shitty rollslop is good? It's unplayable and boring. Every edition is better than the last, so they are willingly choosing to play a bad edition. Wtf?

Lol, no. Everybody with any understanding of the game knows that UA is in large part not very good, and DSG and WSG are mostly garbage. There's a reason we talk about first decade D&D, and it's the the quality of books dropped drastically after 1983ish.

The OSR community is full of elitist boomers or insufferable NuSR hippies
HOWEVER
The games, speaking for the OSR side in my experience, are good and have an overall good mentality behind it. There are game designers that I personally absolutely despise that still contributed to good shit I occasionally pilfer.

anyone hosting Hackmaster?

What are your preferences for how elemental spells, abilities, and/or beings/creatures are handled in your games and/or settings? How would you advise someone on the best way to create an original elemental system for a game and/or setting in general, both mechanically and/or narratively? And after the stock answer of Avatar and its RPGs, what's worth looking at for ideas/inspiration? If you have any great elemental images that's fine too!

Well its April 1st again. I return first of all to remember one of /tg/'s finest works: Dungeons the Dragoning 40,000 7th edition. Last year I gave the game a revision, stapling both books together so it could rival a phonebook.

This year I have more DtD news: 8th edition is on the way. If you want to try out 7th edition before then though the book is in the same spot as always: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/2/folders/1HTYsfwiIWlGg4UZb5Bi32PYgTxKHUIp8

There's also links to a place where you can wait for updates on a playtest. Otherwise, I'll just drop it all in the folder when its done. Happy April Fools.

Hell yeah, this game has been my autistic obsession since like 2017, happy to see it getting updates

I thought I was doing pretty well to recognize that the others were WH40K as someone who's never played. Legit funny that my mistake could be taken as an esoteric lore in-joke, though.

How hard is it to create an interesting campaign without backstory? After reading the classic Sword and sorcery stories, I wanted to do something that didn't rely on backstory and was completely focused on the present. But how do you make it interesting?

>>
>>97817742
Don't make the story too flat and boring. Alternatively, know your group and run the kind of game you have in mind for people who'd be interested in it. I don't know what kind of an answer beyond "have interesting shit in it" are you looking for here. That's all there is to it. If you can't think of interesting shit that doesn't depend of backstory established beforehand, you probably shouldn't run a game without backstory. If you can think of interesting shit, why do you think your players would find it boring?
>>
>>97817618
Make interesting places for the players to explore. Make interesting characters for the players to interact with and talk to. Make interesting monsters/combat encounters to fight. Give the players room to fill out their own characters. Leave gaps and let the players fill them. the story will emerge on it's own.
>>
>>97817742
>someone
Sure thing, but there was no indication of who OP is trying to interest, so I had no choice but to answer in terms of my own interests.
I can get by without story in a game, I just need the game to be good. But the vocal majority of faggots on this board need daddy to tuck them in before they can throw their dice, and they generally prefer a more /qst/like "structure".
So, the answer to OP's retarded question depends on who he's trying to interest.
>>
>>97817835
>in medias res is a thing you know
>>97817673
>Have interesting things happen and interesting characters be present.

So between these two comments, there just isn't anything else that needs to be in this thread and I don't fucking understand how the OP managed to think it was a good idea to make this thread anyway. A thread died for this shit. Where are the fucking jannies?
>>
>>97817618
>After reading the classic Sword and sorcery stories
But a good chunk of classic sword and sorcery stories are contingent on stuff that happened in the past rearing its head in the present.

I understand how the card works, what you're describing here is some form of a storm deck, there is no fair "I sacrifice a ton of things at once for value" in legacy, if you're putting so much work into drawing a bunch of cards at once, you better win the game the turn you do it

>Why can’t any of these people be cute?
Of all the words used to describe people who are really into tabletop games, "cute" is generally not one of them. Like take the average amount of people who qualify as attractive in general, divide that by about five and then account for the fact attractive people are more likely to spend their time on sex. There's your number of cute people that are going to be playing with plastic crack. It is not high.

>>97720923
All good things eventually reach the mainstream where they begin to decay.
It is the natural order of things when it comes to good media.
>>
>>97818036
I can count to potato plus infinity.

I feel like even though there is a bit of a surge in popularity for the medium, the actual art of rules writing might be slipping away. We haven't lost it yet, but there may have been some stagnation.

What exactly makes a wargame/TTRPG's rules good?

And what is the most "retard proof" method of slowly or even hastily (if possible) to learn to be a good writer of wargame/ttrpg rules?
