Alright lads, I dug up my 3.0 Psionics Handbook from a box in my parents' loft and now I'm curious

How bad/unbalanced/shit is 3.0 psionics compared to 3.5? I know I played with it back in the olde days, but I'm not 14 any more and I can't remember the details.

The psionic attack/defense mode thing looks neat as a way to make psionics "different" but it feels like different for different's sake, especially the "attacker sets DC by rolling a d20 and defender makes a save", there are fuck all other places in D&D that have both attacker AND defender roll like that.

The attack and defense modes are clunky, and the powers are just carbon copies of spells. The auto-scaling nature of augments doesn't exist yet, just some formally acknowledged "power chains" that aren't actually directly spelled out in the book (only the webpages). Honestly, even the XPH didn't really figure augments in fully, and it leads to some legacy issues because of it (Greater Teleport should really just be a Teleport augment and not a distinct power, for example). Because of the lazy rebranding of psionics at this point, it's just wizard but annoying and shitty, with bizarre rules that nobody likes such as each discipline having a different casting stat. Some people like to discuss the persistent power feat, but I see very little other reference to it, not counting the webpage content (sardior et al).

40k is in it's end of edition campaign which means it won't get anything massive.
AoS's next big release wave comes out on Saturday so there will probably be a gap before they announce another big release and tomorrow will just be a few armybooks and pity heroes

Orc Boyz can get 4+ armor, so they do tank better than Gors by a lot. They will benefit from being 7 wide though cause they can fight back decently. Technically Gors fight back basically the same, but if they get charged too many if them die to make it viable. Gors with double weapon are better at both charging and being charged simply cause they get the more attacks and an almost guaranteed reroll 1s to hit. Boyz would get giga wrecked being double weapon on defense.

Kingdom Death is a tabletop miniature brand stared by Adam Poots and operated by himself and his Team that later spun off into a miniature based bored game funded by two very successful Kickstarter campaigns.

Monster is a Nightmare Horror cooperative boss battler/miniature hobby game for 1-4 players about hope in a strange world of bizarre monstrosities and perpetually darkness. Players take on the role of survivors that band together to form a settlement, fighting monsters, crafting weapons and gear, and developing their civilization to ensure survival from generation to generation.

Harvester:
This event cannot be rerolled or avoided in any way.
~flavor text~ All survivors gain 1 random disorder and must spend 1 survival or be devoured whole. If any survivor has noisy gear, the Harvester is drawn to the sound and they are instantly devoured. Nothing can save them. ~flavor text & no death principle~

So, this event is the only event in the game that has no ability to be avoided through re-rolls and has "Kill a survivor if they *specific type of gear*". There is no other base hunt event with text that expressly reads this way. All other kill events (Feet, 63) have some other stipulations associated with them. For event 63, the kill only occurs if all survivors on the hunt are insane, and if you are *not* playing SotF. In terms of punishment, I would say that this drastically out of line and is a massive outlier in terms of design and balance.

Noisy Gear Core Only:
- Whisker Harp: 50/50 discard a mood is pretty dang good, but arguably more productive stuff to do
- Drums: encourage everyone and 1ins on arrival is fine
How are either of these two pieces of base gear worth the 1% risk of instant death? This event design is limiting for future expansions, 1% chance to lose a survivor whole sale for the next hunt is ridiculous, and if you're playing with scouts you should NEVER bring anything noisy precisely because that pillar incentivizes very safe play. The design space of the game is indirectly telling you to not play with these things because it is an almost instant hunt end.

If you can pick the pubes out of your teeth, please tell me how I'm wrong.

The game is not supposed to be fair. Yes, Harvester is unfair, and that's fine. The game is supposed to be punishing. The game is supposed to have things in it that feel unfair, because life in the Kingdom Death universe is unfair and cruel and uncaring. That's what this event is supposed to represent, and without things like this the game is worse off. The edge disappears.

Kingdom Death is not some incredibly well balanced pristinely manicured gameplay experience. If you want that, go play Gloomhaven, it's also very good in its own right. KD is supposed to be raw and uncaring and unfair. But if you just handwave all that away because you want something super balanced, in my opinion you're playing an inferior game. I have better games. I can, and do, play them. But when I play Kingdom Death I want Kingdom Death.

And what’s the current intended fix for the noisy gear that Poots came up with? That’s right, two 60 dollar white boxes (one of which is also seasonal) that provide bandaid solutions and add SOME counterplay to harvester
Imagine if you were playing Monster Hunter and each time you went on a hunt wearing a helmet, there was a 1% chance that you would instalose and get your save deleted instead, unless you purchased a 20$ once-per-character mcguffin that takes up another armor slot and prevents this from happening

Aside from what >>97370327 said, you can absolutely make your different ship types fill specific roles. A favourite of mine is getting interceptors with really fast drives (ideally an early ancient tech) and filling the rest with missile launchers. Combine it with neutron bombs, you have very cheap terror units. Assassinate cruisers with 3-4 of them before they can fire a single shot, and when you can't destroy them immediately, just run and/or glass all worlds in your way. It's a fun system and I have no idea why it has never been reused in another game

An extended skill check consists of a [NUMBER of STEPS], a [CHECK DIFFICULTY] and a [CHECK DURATION], all of which can vary.
[CHECK DURATION] is uninterrupted and undivided time spent on your project, it can range from 10 minutes to 12 hours to a month of working time.
[CHECK DIFFICULTY] represents how hard the steps of your project are, taking skill into account. Refer to the chart provided.
[NUMBER of STEPS] represent how much work a project requires, there is always at least 3, without an upper limit..
To attempt work on a project a PC must spend time equal to the project's [CHECK DURATION], then then make a relevant skill test vs. the project's [CHECK DIFFICULTY] and mark [PROGRESS].

Currently toying with the idea of a low fantasy RPG set in the Wild West. The main premise would be a Luck mechanic; Every character has somewhere between 10-20 HP and about up to 50 Luck, most shots from a revolver up close can one shot a character's HP but the damage first goes to Luck. Luck can also be used to add or subtract from rolls, it is a finite resources that can only be replaced during down time (Don't have a clear idea about how yet, I have been toying with having to win a hand of poker or just get drunk).

Ars Magica has a splatbook called The Cradle & The Crescent which deals with middle-eastern magic through the ars magica lens. It's not particularly detailed, since it's totally different to the core european hermetic magic that the game is built for, but it's interesting enough. I played a guy whose shtick was summoning djinni and asking them to do stuff in a one-shot game and I have no idea how the rules worked, the GM handled most of the stuff under the hood.

it's very clunky in some places, but it has something very positive for what you want.
The "metaphysics" of the game is that things work how people think they work. That is, the majority belief holds true and this can vary from region to region (someone who has learned a magical practise in one region can carry it to another and use it there, but the reigning metaphysics will change). That means you can have characters from one region turn up in another and go "wow this place is strange, even the magic is weird, why are there so few djinni here? why are their mages so strange?" and have mechanical backing to that. Since world travel is difficult and slow, it's not a setting and era where people can easily compare notes and do that "unified theory of magic" thing that happens in some modern D&D games.
