The lore of 40k has been circling the drain for years, the gameplay is even worse and I think you need a reset on the magnitude of 8th to unfuck 40k currently. But they won't, because they are making more money than ever from newcomers to the hobby. So 40k will continue down the road of enshitification it's been on for a while.

As someone who played warhammer fantasy before I am baffeled how important named named characters are for the 40k armies, in fantasy they were fluff pieces that were banned in tournaments.

I really do not like that I have to play angron instead of a no name greater demon or korn, I used to enjoy playing with my "own" army with namless lords and heroes.

That sounds like a lot of LA. I know sneople were hard to play in 3.5 because of it.
>>
>>97234578
LA was inflated partly from a really awful process around it (just look at Savage Species overriding its own results for being stupidly high, or that one time it was explained and looked too weak so the writer added a racial hit die as an improvement...) and partly because a LOT of the designers didn't actually want people playing Weird Shit.

Given what Totemist can pull in the field full-time, such a package COULD have been quite cheap.

This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

Soon gonna GM the BFRPG "Monkey Isle" module, anyone that got any heads up or tips when it comes to GM OSR hexcrawls?
>>
>>97235777
Yeah, play a much better game..
The only reason bfrpg ever existed was because BX was hard to source in the early 2000s.
Bfrpg is a half baked dumpster fire that is only still an extant novelty because it is "open source".
Mechanically, the game is just bad, and the content for it is some of the most unpleasant dry material I've ever digested.
>>
>>97235777
Didn't run BFRPG specifically, but here are my 2 cents
hexcrawls are driven by two things, random encounters and rumors. Monkey Isle seems to have a boring random encounter table, too much rolling for encounters (roughly 3 times the amount compared to the original Isle of Dread), and lacks a rumor table.
The latter is a game killer on such a giant map. Players need to have rumors to direct them towards points of interest. My advice is to think how are you going to handle it. You can make a random rumor table yourself or have specific rumors about several close by POIs prepared which are going to get presented to players in village X or Y.

PS
Don't listen to the BFRP hater
>>
>>97235857
Actually do listen to the hater, because this isn't an echo chamber and if you're going to be posting on 4chan of all places you should be expecting to hear all sides.

Merry Christmas everyone. I started paint this summer and chose to start with Warcrow (not a smart move people tell me because the models can be quite a difficult job to paint.) anyway I'm paint this unit in pic. Since I'm new I'm just trying to copy the paint schemes of models from official promotional art. Anyways I think her grey hair is a too much grey and I want another color. Red might work, I was thinking black but it might not jive with the dark head piece. I considered blonde/brown but I think it might be too ugly. Thoughts?

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

For what it's worth, I don't think there's any evidence that nusrg is fishfag. We had the apparent OP of that thread in here a few times when it started and he seemed perfectly normal and chill and wanted to emphasize that he wasn't interested in drama with this thread. That's why their threads have a "(frens with osrbros)" tag in the OP, and why fishfag continually goes in there to complain how the entire general is a secrete false flag by /osrg to drive out discussion that "rightfully belongs in /osrg".

We asked them to take it to another thread for years because it was a fundamentally different style of game at many levels, and someone finally did, and that's really all there is to it as far as I can tell.

Personally, I think that's because exploration and interaction on that level is better handled narratively than with gridded movement etcetera; there's just not much call or use for B2-style small-scale overland maps.

That said, Judges Guild's Campaign Hexagon System involves a granular hex scale of I think it's 216 yards at the lowest level (c.f. the "Triumphant Grand Tactical" map of the City-State). You could check that out.
>>
>>97235828
Yeah, agreed. I actually don't think /2eg/ was started by Fishfag either because if you check the archives you can see him raging over it with his usual spittle-flecked, impotent fury. Just another case of him proving that he actually doesn't care about 2e at all.

True, but also debatable. Having a character or other model capable of monster slaying at minimum provides a disincentive to the enemy. The threat of monster slayer is frequently more important than the ability itself.
Also against a T7 monster you're already only wounding on 6s, so you're not fishing any deeper than normal.

>Players do not like being messed with and "interrupted" , it creates negative play experiences that affect retention.
Didn't stop millions of mtg players back in the day, sounds like a bunch of pussies to me.
>>
>>97236038
I think it is stupid and purposely limits the design space but it just is what it is trendwise. Star wars unlimited, all the bandais.
Easy example is them fixing issues with digimon by creating an entire keyword around being able to digivolve on an opponents turn but it has a lot of restriction and deterrence from overusing it
It helps to remember that only a few games go full sweat anymore, most are just trying to make a buck selling art. So if you make a game system that doesn't make the players pissy if they ever do play that is always the goal. And I can say that oppressive playstyles like milling your opponent or heavy removal, or heavy counterspells to take from mtg turn a lot of people off and we are constantly told that, and those cards are limited
>>
>>97235903
>so many ACG focus on hero main characters
there's two reasons to do that, and the reasons are pretty different depending on the implementation:
>#1 Avatars as class/faction selection
this is where you pick your character or avatar first, and then that decision heavily limits which cards you can use. the reason to do this is it expands your design space, so you can print more cards before you have to reboot/rotate or just start blatantly reprinting or powercreeping. it basically isolates the game into little sub-cardpools. so if your design could normally accomodate 300 unique cards before it felt bloated or started breaking under its own weight? well, make it 10 different classes and now you can go to 3000 unique cards instead.
>#2 Avatars as modifiers
This is where the character choice doesn't restrict your card picks or archetypes to a significant degree, and instead just gives you an extra ability or bonus card or something. It can look superficially similar to the above, but it's done for the exact opposite reason: to make a small cardpool seem artificially large. so if say you're only going to have 300 cards in 5 years because you're an indy company, slow release schedule, whatever, you release 20 characters that can all run the same general set of decks and you basically just made your deckbuilding options 20x bigger.

>so many ACG focus on creature combat
that one's simpler. it's easy to understand and all 3 of the biggest 3 games use creature combat. it's more selection pressure than anything. there's some notable exceptions though. netrunner and its spawn like hubworld focus on running nets. the fighting games like DBZ and FAB use few or no true creatures. political games like L5R, VTES and AGOT have combat, but it's either between armies and leaders or some kind of combat-that's-not-really-combat. few of the newer ones like keyforge, lorcana and altered have combat but it's not the focus or the way to win. all kinds of shit out there anon
>>
>>97233888
To learn the game? There is a training app on phone and desktop you can access for free. There is a Learning Deck Set with 3 beginner (shitty) decks to play the game. There are individual starter decks (also for the most part shitty). You can go down to your local game store that runs it (search bandai tcg+ for events near you) and find bulk to build decks before playing.

Same as rats irl, they're pests, they reproduce too fast and live in shitty places or in sewers that make the effort of getting rid of them not worth it for how much of annoyance they are

So you kill them when they're in front of you causing problems but above that you just ignore them if they aren't annoying you

Yes, the Martial can do that, at the levels we are talking about, assuming:
>Nobody has persistent delay death on themselves.
>Nobody has contigency on themselves.
>Nobody has bothered to take measures against ambushes.
Nah, at this point it's just getting too far-fetched, I suppose a Level 20 Martial can be a CR 20 challenge if played correctly.

>>97235839
Wealth by Level, the gear characters are supposed to have (valued in gp) at each given level.
>>
>>97235808
CR in 3.x starts real shaky at low levels, and gets worse at high levels.
As for 'boss' type foes, I tend to use regular dudes with a field advantage of some sort, which the CR system really struggles to account for.
An ambush situation increases CR by +1 or +2, iirc, by RAW. What about foes that are already buffed when you meet them? Bad weather?
>my players once got in to a fight during a typhoon, shit was cash
To wit, CR is a kinda sorta base you can use, but you really need to feel out what is appropriate, because some foes can btfo the party if they do not have the right setup. I threw a deathshrieker at a group once, and they had to run for their lives because no one had the gear, abilities or spells to counter a powerful incorporeal undead, including the cleric (spent 4 turn attempts for nothing).
>>
>>97235879
I think it doesn't work at all, PC/CR, unless you have class levels on a monster chassis.
See vampire with Master Vampire levels.
In 3.x, the capacity of pc classes swings too wildly to have a set challenge, outside maybe Druid. Even other casters could be loaded with poor spell choices. You think that level 20 cleric loaded up with divination spells is going to take on the party?

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>Yeah, Ewoks aren't cute cuddly teddybears.
This is a weird problem inherited from pulpy scifi from the 60s that SW is strongly 'inspired' by. The mix of cute, furry/anthro and savage dangerous little things was big then and just doesn't work anymore. Its like gnomes in fantasy. No one likes little people anymore, they're lame and even having them on screen makes it into slapstick comedy in a way that can't recover into them being dangerous.

I did, the plot was fun and cute. Some things I did not like but some of the skits were good. Saun Dann was a great character

ah fair, she's a form 2 user and uses a curved hilt still, so at least SOMEONE practices it in the imperial era

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

Hell, at the very beginning of 3rd you could play the entire game with only the core rulebook which is pretty impressive.

I started to dislike 40k when the stratagems and weird objective play came to the game

Literally every edition before 8th had less bullshit to memorize

Even the absolute mess that was 7th, it was pretty modular and you could ignore most of it.
And still you didn't get surprised outside of what a unit already had in their unit description.
