To preface, I'm an MTG veteran. My first Precon was Coven Counters in 2021 and I've been an EDH player ever since.

After years of playing, I think the WUBRG elemental may just do me in. Gimmick synergy, tribal, a real throw in anything somewhat related type of commander potential. It also has the most forced WUBRG ability to date: being able to pay WUBRG in order to keep an Elemental you Evoked is utter bullshit. It completely defeats the purpose of Evoke and is just a continuation of "drop a set, put whatever you want under 1 commander."

I hate it, you hate it, and it's just a slap in the face of previous WUBRG Legendaries that tried to be something more than tribal or gimmick synergy, or just cram some WUBRG ability in last second, such as [[Atogatog]] [[General Tazri]] [[Golos, Tireless Pilgrim]] [[Jodah, the Unifier]] [[Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile]] [[Morophon, the Boundless]] [[Najeela, Blade Blossom]] and [[Ramos, Dragon Engine]] . And I'm missing a shitton of other WUBRG Legendaries that could be Commanders.

But let's look at the new WUBRG Legendaries that could be Commanders (hint: they're all tribal, gimmick synergy, or cram in a WUBRG ability last second): [[Avatar Aang]] [[Cosmic Spider-Man]] [[Hei Bai, Forest Guardian]] [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] and [[Infinite Guideline Station]] .

As long as WotC keeps dropping cards like [[Horde of Notions]] , MTG will die very soon and for real this time.

Dwarves like that would be agoraphobic.
>>
>>97233986
True, I forgot that in my interpretation, but the rest of it would be true. They would be seeing things for the first time constantly, would have improper or non existant instincts for above ground situations, and likely either a sense of wonder or dread/disgust for everything they come across. Think of an old tiny hamlet medieval Catholic lady obsessively crossing herself every five minutes because she’s walking downtown Las Vegas. A dwarf would be doing similar things for their first time above ground, gawping at the sky or a lake or birds, signing the cross equivalent everytime they see a wooden building or stone structure that was made of brick instead of carved of fully native stone. Would they even understand the concept of windows or think they’re senseless unnatural openings? All kinds of things would be new and uncanny and scary or awe inspiring to them. Might even cause them to become completely neurotic.
>>
>>97234008
Dwarves literally craft windows for underground village homes. They keep the bugs out, while letting them keep an eye on the neighborhood. The primary differences between an underground village or city in a fantasy setting and one on the surface are building materials, flora and fauna, disasters (cave ins, quakes, and floods vs. hurricanes and hail or snow), and the sky or lack thereof.

There may be cultural differences as well.

But most dwarven and even drow cities are similar to surface cities and built in immense caverns.

I dunno man I'd withhold all that opinion for after session 3. A DM might have put all his work elsewhere at first and then collides with his noobism and has to repair that between sessions.
>>
>>97230596
The true judge of such a DM is if you point out a rule that you know is in the game that he doesnt know of. Does he accept it and let you use it, does he just say no and carries on with his lobotomised version, or does he maim or kill your character in the next adventure as revenge or to regain dominance over you?

You're absolutely right for pointing that out — I should've acknowledged the slow edging and resource buildup in other card games before the players blow their loads. Would you like me to give an analysis of how slow landdrop foreplay and random manaflooding or landscrews make for healthier gameplay than Yu-gi-oh's resourceless gameplay?

If we wanted to use it for something else, we'd have to come up with a new genre for it.
We have to have hyperspecific pigeonholes to confuse the concept of genre and argue endlessly over what is TRUE SCI-FI or if it's actually just laserpunk space dark fantasy fictionpunk science.
>>
>>97230214
Dieselpunk seems to be stuck in the alternate history territory and that makes it stupidly limited. There is no reason that we couldn't have a dieselpunk setting set in a completely fictional world. The way I see it the most important aspect is a highly industrialized and militarized 1984-style dictatorship and that could exist in any setting.

Okay, agreed, but what's the point of that? (in the context of D&D 3.5e, specifically)
What is the point of defining an absolute way the rules work, when the authors themselves playtested them minimally?
Why should I, or you, care what the community defines as "RAW"?
What is the point of saying Ice Assassin-ing a deity is completely RAW, when said RAW was never the intention of any writer, nor will it feasibly happen in a normal table?
The only natural conclusion to that is literally to ignore the entire way the spell was written, and either rewrite it yourself or ditch it.
I would get it if all these discussions were happening over a game that would have, at the very fucking least, released some official errata on things like how you are supposed to treat spell-like Wishes (and the lack of an XP component). But that is not the case, and you are expected to homebrew parts of the system if you want it to work from Levels 1-20 (in a way that doesn't make you kill yourself as a DM).
>>
>>97234064
The point is that it gives us a starting point of conversation. You and I might both agree that the RAW of how light sources interact with darkness is stupid, i.e. a person in a dark field can't see a torch 50 feet away. However, in order to play the same game and talk about it we need to refer back to what the rule is saying so we can figure out what it's trying to do. Even if there's a common-sense consensus it needs to be reached rather than assumed. RAW doesn't need to be derived.

Yeah, shit needs to be rewritten all the time, but RAW is what makes it rewriting rather than pure homebrew or building your own game.
>>
>>97234078
Well, I can't argue with that.
Anyway, my original point was just a remark to that anon's statement (that people ignore how dragons are supposed to be prideful and egomaniac when assuming any encounter with them), it wasn't really meant as a sophisticated post.
>>
>>97234091
No worries, I highly doubt anyone's posts here past midnight are particularly sophisticated. And for what it's worth I agree with you that a monster's habits, tactics, and motivations should be just as much as its CR calculus as its abilities. Zombies are stupid. Owlbears attack whatever looks the most edible. Most things with Int over 10 are running from a fight they can't win unless they've got a damn good reason to stick around, be that zealotry, defense of something worth dying for, or low enough wisdom they can't tell the fight's turning.

I wish there were more books like The Monsters Know What They're Doing because I felt like that series leaned way too hard into gamemanship and angleshooting mechanics rather than actual tactics and reasonable behavior.
>>
If you had a Skeletal Nightmare animated with Nimble Bones do you think it would bake sense for the flight speed to go up in a ratio wiht the ground speed?

More on how it feels like it should work, since Nightmares basically air-run, than RAW unless there's some rule about ratios remaining consistent somewhere I've missed
