>>92619343>What is your hobby guilty pleasure?Starting new projects before finishing the current ones.
>>92619343TQ: I go all-in on accessories. I'm working on a project at the moment, and not only have I built a new 15mm army specifically for this battle/theatre, I have bought specific dice, a custom-cut tray for storage, etc. All this for something where I could have brought models, dice, etc which I already own.
>>92620424I do this sometimes by overestimating how quickly I can finish up a battallion or company. I have an Italian line regiment on the desk rn I'm almost finished with and a box of combined elite companies and hussars on the shelf. I'd say it's fine as long as you don't have piles upon piles of unpainted models and kits lying around.
>>92620526What's the war and theater? If it's a popular one it sounds like it'd be a cool investment.
>>92620571It's a specific beach army for a D-Day event running this summer. Based on sand dunes etc. I already own a bunch of WW2 stuff (even desert, but that's a different year, different tech, and different type of sand). Frankly, beach assault games are pretty miserable meat grinders to play, with limited tactical decisions for either side. But they're iconic, and they're also a part of the commemorative side of the hobby. So I'm guessing it's a project which will get an outing somewhat less than once per year in the future.
>>92619343>TQAlways aiming to play the most obscure or side armies in a given conflict. I really enjoy researching equipment, uniforms, TO&Es, and the like, and I have a bit of an autistic need to know things other people don't, so I tend to gravitate away from the "main" armies. Back when I played Bolt Action, I played Romanians. I plan on making a force of modern PAVN for FFT3, and for late Cold War I'm thinking of doing either Hungarians or Bulgarians, with either Greeks or Austrians to go against them depending on which WP nation I go with. The only time I want to collect the big players is if the conflict itself is more obscure, like Israelis and Egyptians for the Suez Crisis.
>>92620534I still have a brigade each for Prussian and France for my 1813 project I need to paint and am already looking for SYW stuff. It's crazy.
British western front khaki, what paint should I use? And it will be late war, which isn't as brown as the 1914 or WW2 uniform.
did you guys know that since the app from battlefront was killed, they uploaded all the V3 stuff including vietnam to a free google folder? That and maybe add this to the mega:Nordic forces https://files.catbox.moe/f6t1n8.7zWarsaw pact+Red dawns https://files.catbox.moe/da3da7.7z
>>92621727also if someone could share the west german book it would be pretty cool
Anons, any reason NOT to do something like this? Meaning basing my miniatures individually and then using larger bases to play the games I want to play (mainly Impetus, but I want the flexibility to be able to play ADLG, FoG, TtS, Mortem et Gloriam, and other games as well).
>>92622179And additional question, if I want to use squares, would you recommend the more traditional 20mm squares, or 25mm ones given that miniatures are usually bigger nowadays? I'm going to be playing mostly with a couple of friends who'll use the same basing as me, they're waiting for me to decide
>>92622179>>92622188Sounds like a perfectly logical thing to do to me. One of the greatest boons of Historicals is being able to use the same models for different games, and basing usually only matters insofar as everything from both forces is consistently based. As for 20s or 25s, assuming you're doing 28mm minis I'd probably go for 25s, it'll make positioning them a little easier
>>92619343>What is your hobby guilty pleasure?I'm that guy who wants to have a unique army and won't do this or that project if too many people do it. For example, I wanted to do a WW2 Free French desert force, but I've already played with 2 people who have these, so I won't do it now. I'll just keep working on my SNLF paratroopers, Soviet police and Polish Army in the East like an autist, I guess.
What's a good ruleset for HYW/WotR for smaller scale minis and larger battlesI like Never Mind the Billhooks for 28mm and single base removal, but I don't know how well that adapts to like, 6mm element based figures. How do people feel about Flower of Chivalry and Days of Knights?
>>92619343>OP picGreat. Even /hwg/ has gone woke.
>>92619343Y.J.K
>>92622442Yes, I forgot to mention I was referring to 28mm minis. I thought that 25mm for bases would work better as well, but I'm a little wary of the fact that most games use the 60mm x 40mm format of DBx, meaning that I could only fit two infantry or cavalry to a base at most, resulting in anemic-looking units perhaps. In any case, the extra spacing seems to be realistic for Ancients (except phalanxes, maybe). Thanks for your response, anon, I'm having a really tough time deciding on how to base
>>92622535Me too. Paulista revolt seems fun to me, as does the Yucatan Caste War.
>>92623429You could always increase the overall bases to 75x50mm, to maintain the same amount of models on the stand.
>>92620598Sounds worthwhile, D-day is iconic and you'll have plenty more games where you can hit the beach>>92621545Best adviceI can tell you is put down the card and pick up the brush, but you already know that. It's easier to spend then it is to build and paint but trust me the satisfaction of a fantastic looking collection is much better than a quick dopamine rush from a purchase.>>92622943Liberals done put women in historical wargaming. Truly, the west has fallen.
Bumping the thread with some cool minis
Hi, I'm done with scifi and fantasy games for the most part, and I want to switch to historicals. Is there a wargame with official rules and stats for the Spanish Civil War?
>>92627985I dunno if it has stats for it, but Osprey has "A World Aflame" for interwar stuff. I myself sadly can't say anything on it, I've yet to get into any Osprey games
>>92627985Any WW2 game that covers early war should work well for Spanish Civil War.Fist full of TOWs, Chain of Command, or Ostfront for example. There's a few blogs where people game it:http://www.orkneywargames.com/category/modern-periods/spanish-civil-war/https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/797306.pagehttps://www.heresybrush.com/en/2015/spanish-civil-war-how-to-paint-a-spanish-rural-house-2/
I want 28mm minis so bad BUT THEY AREN'T SUITABLE FOR GAMING>just buy some to paintI DON'T WANT TO I WANT TO GAME WITH THEM
>>92628768They're fine for small scale games - a few squads vs. a few squads. Ideal for special forces operations. What period are you looking at? pretty much every period has some kind of skirmish warfare.
>>92628799I don't like skirmish games generally
>>92628823Then suffer.
Very baity question but what do we do when very "woke" individuals start wargaming and add inaccurate things? We have plenty of movies, games and even documentaries today that change historical facts for things such as representation, and big mainstream nerd wargames such as Warhammer are adding "woke" things. What do we do when someone unironically paints his ancient Germanians black or insists on other things we would frown upon? Just stay away from these individuals and gate-keep our gaming groups?
>>92624924welp prepare your butts
>>92629678Generally, history fans and historical wargames are pretty safe from this and I don't ever see it becoming an issue in historical games. History fans are generally right leaning white males, and we obviously have a preference for things to be generally historically accurate. Gatekeeping is always the answer, however, and you should be doing it regardless
>>92630099Tundra works has always been a gay canadian liberal twink with an obsession with Asian immigrant woman (Asian preference just means you can't secure a white girl)
Does anyone at all have the PDF for Nevermind the Bill hooks deluxe version? I can't find it in the trove

>>92630840From what I can tell those look like peninsular war british
>>92631007Danke Tom
Tenno Hekai Banzi!Finished up the officer for my Tosa Jinshotai Detachment. Going to be playing with Fistful of Lead Horse and Musket. Really like these Bac Ninh miniatures, that Jose is a great guy. I also got a book he recommended called Bakumatsu From Samurai to Soldier and it might be the best Boshin War reference available in English. Gonna slowly finish out the rest of the Jinshotai and then get to work on the Denshutai with some plans for a few other detachments after.
I've gone in on an AK47 Republic army after learning the classic rules are so much better than Reloaded. How do I convince people to play this shit?
>>92630704perfect for rank & file
>>92630704you can have like whole plastic 1/72 army for dba for price of five 28mm metal minis
>>92631136Beautiful work, anon, update us as soon as you paint more. I know virtually nothing about the period, but you just got me interested with your comment
>>92630450>>92630603Way to get your panties in a twist over nothing. Imagine getting mad because a range for the FRENCH REVOLUTION has miniatures for the women's march on Versailles. You know, the pivotal turning point that neutered the monarchy.
Women ruining everything yet again
>>92629678I consider myself a pretty woke person, but I also love historical wargaming. speaking for myself at least you won’t need to worry about this. Anyone who cares think you’re all Nazis in the first place, and anyone who doesn’t isn’t a threat in the first place.
>>92631595>>92631520>>92630603As long as it remains historically realistic I don't see the issue with adding women into wargames. Plenty of women fought in the mobs that stormed the bastille and Versailles and the counter revolution in the Vendee, if anything having zero women in those games would be historically inaccurate.
>>92631624This sort of thing is fine by my books as well, women can totally be a part of unorganised mobs, last-ditch defence groups in sieges, zealous revolutionary groups with little organisation. There should also generally be more women present when modelling campsites and wagon trains, pre-industrial armies both needed and had a hard time getting rid of women followers. Also look up the uniforms of the actually employed vivandiers of the French second republic and second empire, I'd love painting those for a dumb project.

I just got the Pike & Shotte 15mm set, does anyone know if the rules are similar to 28mm pike & shotte so I can still have, say, 15mm samurai fighting ECW soldiers? Or if not, is there a 15mm system that lets me live my historical Deadliest Warrior battles?
>>92630544Please, does someone have this? I'm also requesting. Id even take the original non-deluxe rules
are there any good games that one could play out the 90s yugoslav conflicts in? every forum i see this question asked in gets 10 bajillion sobby responses about how it was a horrible time and why would you want to play out a game in this period from hypocrites also would be nice for any ww2 games who give stats to yugoslav partisans/chetniks etc or any "cold war gone hot" games where you can play as yugoslavians

>>92634234it continues. reveal yourself, triple agents of the world!
>>92634235It is what it is
>>92634319As far as I know, peltast were still used during the hellenistic period, but their role overlaps with that of the thureophoroi and the supposition is that the latter took their place. On the other hand, wargamers overfocus on troop definitions, to ancient writers a heavy infantrymen was a heavy infantrymen, and a skirmisher a skirmisher. The minutae of equipment and panoply was unimportant to them. The difference between a peltast and a thureophoroi is a bit academic in this sense. For what is worth, the later Antigonid army had a unit of peltasts, but modern historians think that those were Hypaspist style troops armed as phalangites, and not light infantry.

>>92632586How many games have you played in the past 12 months?
Ok, so this might be a strange request, but I don't know what thread would be a better fit. What I am looking for is artillery rules, like deep artillery rules, not "this shoots like a rilfe but bigger bang" like they are usually done in wargaming. I mean the role of recon, indirect fire, batteries, shoot n scoot if period appropriate, and so on. Maybe there's even some really autistic one where you calculate loads and fuses and such?Maybe even an "artillery only" game? I know it would not be historical at that point, but I don't know where else to ask.

So I've split my infantry sections properly to give my platoons their own fire and movement capability. And thankfully Mein Panzer is able to accommodate that. I'm also going for 1:1 representation.

I have DBA 3.0 and ADLG rulebooks and neither of them have made it off the shelf since I bought them. I want to buy into an era where I can play a variety of armies against each other with a pool of figures. Forgetting the aesthetics, which is likely to lead to better match ups?1a Anglo Saxon/Danish (Spears) vs Norman (Knights) vs Irish (Auxilia) vs Scots (Pikes) vs Vikings (Blades)1b. As above but pivoting from Norman to Frankish and involving Byzantine/Arab/etc.2. HYW English vs HYW French vs WOTR vs Spanish (more of a mirror match with varied armies)3. Biblical era i.e. Sea Peoples, Hittite, Egyptian, Achaian Greek4. Another suggestion for interesting matchups?>>92642020Doesn't Lion Rampant cover pretty much Dark Ages through to War of the Roses? I want to try some hex and counter gamesWhere's are some games you'd reccomend a beginner from any of these periods?- Punic Wars- Late Rome/Migration Period- Early medieval- Late medieval - Peninsular War- WWII Eastern Front- WWII Italian Front- WWII North Africa
Any Successor/Seleucid experts here in /hwg/?I'm looking to better understand the army of Antiochos III. At the Battle of Panium he seems to have had a large variety of troops with him: "Polybius identifies the presence of cataphracts, the elite cavalry agema, Tarentine soldiers and more cavalry, phalangites, hypaspists, war elephants, unidentified infantry and light skirmishers in the ranks of the Seleucid army at Panium."I have several questions:- Were Galatians and Thracians present in any way or form? They seem to have been an important component of later Seleucid armies.- Were Scythians/Parthians present in the form of light horse?- Were all cavalry essentially cataphracts at this point? At the Daphne parade, much later, there seems to have been an element of companion cavalry (represented by minis such as 1st Corps, Relic, or Aventine Seleucid Companions), elite cataphracts, line cataphracts, and other lesser cavalry.- Were these hypaspists the argyraspides, or was there an element of peltast there?- Were there thureophoroi among the lighter troops? They seem to have been already widely used by Greeks and Successors alike, but not really mentioned in the sources in this battle.- Were Cretans a component of Seleucid armies at this point? I know they were a part of the Daphne parade, but this is much earlier.- Were there any imitation legionaries in the works at this point? Similarly, they seem to have been a component in Antiochos IV's armies, but perhaps he was the one to start this transition of argyraspides into imitation legionaries.I have a few similar questions about Magnesia, but that's much more documented. In fact, I'd be interested in being able to represent the army of Antiochos III across its history, as well as having a Roman, a Ptolemaic, and a Carthaginian army of that same period, but I'm a slow painter and I know it's going to be a very long term project.

>>92650734Not that anon but pretty closely aligned yet I've been on this godforsaken shithole site since 2004, and I agree. If you look at the other places to discuss historical games you've got: The Miniatures Page which is just holy fuck no, just no. That place is a tumour and has been since even before /tg/ existed. Hell even before 4chan existed. Dead reddit pages so no. Most other places are just nothing more than just circlejerking about miniatures or barely able to tolerate even the slightest of dissenting opinions. Lead Adventure which is basically just Hey Look At My Blog so the same shit as Reddit Facebook and Instagram. The Wargames Website you might once in a blue moon get some replies on a topic. And even more dead or niche holes. Here? If anons are helpful, they'll be helpful. If they're cunts they'll openly be cunts. They're not hiding behind particular forum rules wangling and being bros with the admins to try and get away with shit. You can openly shit on games you don't like and people can shit on you for it or agree with you and it's fine. You can recommend obscure crap. You can openly share stuff, more or less, which I think helps overall. It's a damning condemnation of the rest of the internet that this place is still (usually) one of the better ones for just general historical wargame discussion.

Has anyone here purchased the premade 6mm HYW army packs from Irregular? And has pics?Or just any of their Medievals. I want 6mm minis for HYW but Baccus jumps straight from crusades to WotR and Irregulars pics on their site do me no goodWould it look too strange or wrong to use non liveried kits from the Baccus WotR range and some stuff from the crusades range to make a sort of hodge podge range?Alternativly what's everyones experience with Old Glory 15s or Pendraken 10mm
>>92651557Old Glory 15mm are pricey as fuck for ok sculpts and limited models, they charge outrageous prices for shipping. They are two states away from me and still charged 15 bucks. Pendraken are pretty good but I've found there models are a little to fat and squat for my taste. It also all depends on what your wanting to do game wise as well so you'll have to elaborate.
>>92651814Elaborate how? I'm looking to build armies suitable for the Hundred Years Way as I said in my post. More specifically late 14th to early 15th. My main interest is in doing 6mm scale but 15 or 10 may be an alternative if the 6mm options aren't that good
>>92639915Looks nice man, are these from irregular miniatures? I've been looking at jumping into 2mm ancients for a while and I haven't decided between those and the ones from Lasercast and Antonine miniatures. The scale seems pretty different between them. Kinda prefer the flatter blocks, maybe even try and forgo bases.>>92639778Chits don't look great on a custom terrain board. But yeah many hex n chit games are just better games than a mini ruleset.
>>92651871My bad, I meant elaboration on rulesets. If the ruleset your using has more focus on unit variety(genoese crossbowmen, french militia, Flemish archers, etc) you'll wanna use Old Glory or Pendraken. If the units are more generic or there's a bigger focus on tactics then you'll wanna go 6mm.

>>92646817Those are some very detailed questions anon. acoup has been running a series on late Successors vs Middle Roman republic. The article on Antiochus III is quite nice.If you are particulary interested in the battle of Panium (200 bc) I guess you should realise the Daphne parade is kinda far off, 35 years. You're much better off studying sources on the Battle of Magnesia which is after all only 10 years later (190 bc). Or even closer: after Panium Antiochus marches west and captures Ptolomean possessions all over western Asia Minor and also marches into Thrace. It's hard to believe he wouldn't have any Galatian or Thracian mercenaries in his army at this point. Likewise Cretans were notorious mercenaries and where certainly there at Raphia (217) so why not.The hypaspists mentioned would probably have been the Silver shields right. Especially on the right flank. Use of peltasts as an elite force on the right flank is a Macedonian invention of Philip V.Imitation legionaries I wouldn't have thought, those really came in after the Roman gave the main Hellenistic armies some asswhoopings between 200 and 190.Thureophoroi would be going out of style but very likely still there, they are there at Magnesia after all.Hope this helps. I'll be starting a 2nd Macedonian War campaign later this year and Antiochus might show up in that one, not sure yet. Hope to be posting some pictures soon.

>>92653119Thank you for your response anon. Yes, I guess you're right that Magnesia would be much better than the Daphne parade for research and inspiration. Magnesia really interests me as well, although many sources state both that battle and the Thermopylae one as decisive Roman victories, so it's kinda harder to want to play Seleucids there lol.Regarding the Thureophoroi -- so they replaced peltasts, and were replaced by what? Thorakitai? I've always considered Thorakitai to be basically better armed Thureophoroi anyway, but to be honest, it's the first time I'm thinking about the vanishing of the Thureophoroi. Do you know why they went out of style? Is it the battles against the Romans and the rise of the imitation legionaries?I'm planning to have a large and varied army that can cover Antiochus III's army, as well as Antiochus IV's army represented at the Daphne parade. Only have some Victrix parthians/scythians, and celts so far, I'll try to take some good pics to show.

>>92646817Galatians and Thracians were almost always included in the Seleucid army. Galatians were hired by everyone and Antiochus had a substantial number at Magnesia. The Seleucids also had Thracian settlers.Parthians and natives/Greeks served as horse archers, mostly in the eastern part of the empire. The hetairoi and agema would be heavily armored but not true cataphracts. Supposedly he made all his regular cavalry cataphracts but that seems implausible. Anyway, Antiochus III had large numbers of them. Generally Seleucid cavalry used lances without shields. Later the agema becomes manned by Thessalian colonists once the Seleucids lost. The Argyraspides numbered 10.000 and a number of these would have been hypaspists, of those a fewer number were agema. The absolute best of the best.Peltats and thureophoroi essentially were the same, light infantry that could fight in melee. Very common, Antiochus had many of them during his campaigns in the Iranian and Afghan mountains.Cretans were everywhere, both as archers and javelinmen. Jews were also popular mercenaries and/or settler soldiers. No imitation legionaries during Antiochus III's reign, though thorakitai are essentially that already. The difference between thorakitai and thureophoroi is armor, otherwise they're the same and barely warrant different labels.Get this book.

Never really advertised except for maybe a single announcement in White Dwarf magazine way back that they were doing it, and not carried in GW stores.Seems to have been basically done because a bunch of the development/production staff with some clout wanted it (Perry twins were making historical miniatures on the side, all the people that'd go on to make Warlord games were playing historical games throughout their time there still) and managed to blag it as an experiment of branching into another market (that wouldn't cost much) before GW went too corporate and consolidated entirely around it's core games. There's been a whole mess of people doing interviews with the original/sort of original GW gang lately about the old of GW, it'd be nice if someone actually asked Priestly or the like about Warhammer Historicals stuff instead of just old editions of Warhammer Fantasy and Rogue Trader.

>>92669760The issue with the game is that it takes WHFB's statline and applies it directly to different soldiers across history, which makes no sense. Why would you have a Strength stat when, more or less, everyone has the same average strength across any kind of ancient/medieval historical armies? Why not have a different stat in place? Same with toughness, initiative, or others.I think there could be potential there, but its stats should be drastically changed
>>92670740you think battle hardened knight would not be stronger and tougher than half starving peasant? stats are right. you just need to use them smart.
Odd question, but you guys are as likely to know the answer as anyone: what Waffenfarbe would a common soldier assigned to a General Officer's HQ wear (WW2 Germany)? Another suggestion for interesting matchups?I was lucky (as 15mm are hard to get here) to get my hands on armies allowing reenactment of Punic Wars, since about Pyrrhus era (some Total War kinda campaign); have most existing factions around Italian Boot peninsula (except ancient Spain and some fringe barbarians like Scythians, Berbers; also have to yet get enough pikemen fo some needed successors armies) had much less luck with original aim of campaign with time-space of 1410 Grunwald, have about 1/3 of sides needed
>>92671433everything looks super shiny under my desk lamp, I've not put any varnish on it, looks fine in normal light
Please brace for a potentially very stupid question. Regarding Napoleonics, do nations have a "thing" like a design theme or are they the same toys but painted differently? Like such and such has great infantry, so and so has great cavalry, the youknowwho have great artillery?Like, what is each army's big meme? Are Prussians well drilled and equipped compared to their foes? Or no?
>>92672764The specifics depend on the ruleset you are using but generally speaking all armies have their specific flavor. This flavor also changes over the course of the war. 1806 Prussians are very different from 1813 Prussians. Most rules obviously play with cliches like the Russians being bad shots but tough melee fighters or the French Old Guard being the closest thing to a Death Star in napoleonics.
>>92669279Sand down the spackle.
>>92672932That's good to hear. You touched on a couple, but could I get a quick rundown on a couple other nation's usual memes? I'm trying to pick out a system on the side, but want to dig deeper into some specific nations at the same time. Just watched the first season of Sharpe so I want to know a bit more before just picking "the good guys" for my first army.
>>92673030Idk what kind of foam that is, but does the spackle not crack and flake off when the foam underneath flexes?
>>92673102French: well led, superior elite troops, fight well in attack column.Brits: good shots, superior light infantry.Russians: bad shots, tough melee fighters, bad leadership.Prussians, early: well drilled, poorly led.Prussians, late: high-low mix, good leadership. Austrians: big formations with a lot of staying power, but not very maneuverable.German minors: trashy (CotR) to really tough (Saxons, Bavarians)Italian minors: trashy to average.Spanish: trashy. Portuguese: strong light infantry.
>>92673148It’s XPS foam which doesn’t flex that much, so cracking is no issue. Will mount the boards on 3mm MDF regardless.
>>92672764Napoleonic armies have their quirks, but in the end everyone is using pretty much the same tactical doctrines and equipment, even if things like column-vs-line get memed to hell.If you want more varied tactical and equipment styles between nations, go for late 17th to early 18th centuries; particularly in Eastern Europe you have a lot of variance in tactics, unit types, and equipment, and even in the west there are regiments with varying levels of pike, dismounting dragoons, caracole/trot/gallop cavalry, even some scotsmen with axes and swords.
what happened to Napoleon at War? i remember that some people tried really hard to push that game in my country but i didn't care that much since back then i was a 40k kiddy
>>92651557I bought a massive Mongolian/song dynasty set. I asked for a hundred quid worth of minis and he sorted me out decent. Quality sculpts and dirt cheap.
>>92673270What's the "Sharpe" of that era to lure me in and show off the coolness?
>>92619343anyone actually looking forward to bolt action 3d ed?The shite pace of releases has put me off them that and ''resin'' that's a step down from metal.Feels like i'll see 4 different 2000ad games, 5 more epic spin offs and some other random nonsense before an army I collect gets any units.
>>92670140The Jinshotai, Quick Shock Squad, is from what I've been able to find or translate from moon runes, the Tosa Domains most modern and elite unit of the Boshin War. A 600 man battalion armed with imported rifles and western style uniforms, they fought in platoons split in half to mutually support each other. They operated as shock light infantry that would skirmish to close with the enemy before finally engaging in melee. They were also modern in that they were made up of volunteers of both samurai and peasants, were paid weekly, could request leave, had a mail service, and even their own army hospital unit. Despite Tosa joining the war late as the third major Imperial Clan, the Jinshotai was considered pivotal for the emperors victory. As for what got me hooked, I'm really interested in transitional periods in warfare, where new and old clash. The Boshin War exemplifies this to the extreme. Those in power in Japan realized that it must modernize or suffer the same fate as China during the opium wars while the Samurai coped and tried to cling to their identity and traditions. The war is interesting because the japs didn't fight the same as their western contemporaries. Instead of line regiments, they fought mostly as companies in open or loose order, skirmishing and used lots of irregular light troops. It was also a very small war in number, lacking any unit organization in size over a battalion, and those were the exception and not the rule. Most of the armies involved were made up of small heterogeneous independent companies, some of which lacked any uniformity at all. Written accounts mention samurai in frock coats and bowler hats armed with spencer rifles and katanas fighting alongside men in archaic iron helms wielding spears and revolvers. It's a hodgepodge mess and I love it, but finding hodgepodge minis to represent some of the more esoteric units is impossible.
just played a game of mhwbkit was funtime to order more zulusdoes anyone have anything from newline designs? are they compatible with 1/72? might just order a couple things to see what they're like
Slow night. I'm interested in getting into the French and Indian wars. Where should I start?
>>92676756The usual stuff: read some source material, chose faction, scale, scope and scenario. Pick a ruleset according to your needs. Use the recommended basing scheme to chose your minis. Build a board, find opponents.???Fun!
Are there any good chit-based wargames of the 3rd Crusade or suitable for warfare of that period?
>>92673995NTA but AlatristeI game both pike and shot and horse foot and guns. If you're disposed to playing skirmish versions of them or they can both be very static. >>92674164I am a Warlord fanboy insofar as I think their starter sets are just really good value. Outside of that the resin is kinda meh and I don't see why you wouldn't buy a Warlord starter of some kind and then branch out to Victrix or Perrys fairly immediately. I feel like WW2 is pretty well furnished by board games desu, painting 100 green guys and 100 grey guys doesn't appeal to me. Big Trucks, however, I think light vehicles would be my "in" hehe
>>92678700What a fucken moviehttps://youtu.be/SX-y87nmZnc?feature=sharedA showcase of renaissance combat types
>>92678706Decent set of books as well. Probably more focused on individual combat than wargaming-scale actions, but Perez-Reverte can spin a yarn - even under translation (although if you can read the original spanish, it's even better).
>>92619343you just know
>>92678722Will have to check out the books tbf>>92674428Best Mersey rules imho.>>92672343For some reason Biblical armies don't shake out as well in DBA. LH and Ps and Ax heavy armies don't. But I still think it's Platonically Perfect Wargame. >>92671733Warhammer asks weird questions to begin with. I think Oathmark does it very elegantly by comparison.
>>92678420Men of Iron Tri PackFucken great spread

>>92669760Let it go lol
>>92678759>LH and Ps and Ax heavy armies don't shake out.I was thinking about balancing singular battle with some stratagem of choice from DBM/DBMM; in campaign lighter armies would be balanced by beign cheaper/faster to train.
>>92680140Yeah I mean HOTT is still very solid you can play that and use DBA as reference material. The two will allegedly be updated in onebook anyway soon
>>92678420Check out Acre: the Third Crusade opens. It's in one of the archives. If you're more interested in a strategic level game, there is Onwards Christian Soldiers. Which is, well it's a Richard Berg game, so an undercooked mess: 1000 counters but not the ones you actually need to play the game, rules booklets that contradict eachother, ideosyncratic movement rules, tons of errata "suggestions", and yet, a fascinating level of detail not found anywhere else.
>>92674428Newline vs AB 20mm vs 1/72, either Revell or Zvezda, can't recall. Really, really like Newline.
>>92670823Per "Painting War #1" the Waffenfarbe for general staff was crimson. Take that for what it's worth, being a secondary source to the nth power.
>>92679541Wh.. what am I looking at here?
>>926822742mm tercio by the look of itProbably irregularNot bad
>>92681973ThanksIt seems they used to sell 1/72s, but maybe they merged them into 20mm stuff, right?
>>92682693I couldn't say, I only have a few of their colonials and a single pack of Napoleonics I bought last year. I actually equate 20mm with 1/72, maybe incorrectly. In my experience most the size difference comes down to manufacturer/sculptor rather that the nominal scale. I'm looking at some of the 1/72 plastic I dug out for the pic, PSC, Revell, Ceasar, Zvezda, and they're all over the place sizewise. The plastics are pretty much all very slender compares to the metals tho. Hth
>>92682880yeah, I have some figures from several different manufacturers and they have different proportions but they look fine together on the tableGot a 20mm Rorke's Drift today and it looks kino
>>92682880I think 1/72 is pretty close to 20mm25mm in the most exaggerated sculptsIt is more natural and elegant looking to me. When my three big periods snd their forks - gallic wars, vikings in ireland, italian wars and ecw and 100 days campaign are done, I think it's either 15mm or 1/72 for me. I have spent a lot on this hobby, 1/72 is such a reasonable ask to justify a lot of what I have done in board games.
>>92683592Oh and somehow I ended up with late romans and goths, I got the megalomania and was like I shall do two ages of rome lol. Just a smattering of all mind
>>92669760Their Western game uses the old LOTR rules.
Does anyone have experience with Henry Turner 6mm napoleonic prints? I am especially interested in Russians here.
>>926835921/72 hasn't been 20mm in a long time (that was when it actually was 1/76). Check PSR for real sizes. Most will be 24mm.Would have recommended 1/72 maybe 10 years ago, but now you will have a real tough time to source boxes outside the most popular periods and engagements. You will always find your Romans and Gauls, your French vs Brits for the Peninsular war, but apart from that... good luck finding Austrian artillery, Ottomans etc, etc.You can still rely on the 2nd hand market somewhat (still no Austrian artillery) on the manufacturers not so much. Companies closed shop, or are in limbo (Hät), and those that still produce new sets (the Ukrainians), rarely reissue their old stuff.
