What are the best books, campaigns or games than are based in monster hunting, as a main thing? In the way than the game is based on it, not just an after tought about whacking some chumps for xp. More like the Witcher than DnD, perhaps more like Monster Hunter (the vdiya),a bit like whaling in the way the monsters are used for a lot of stuff. If there is not a game for that, recomendations from your setting/own games would be neat. I played different D100, D6 Star wars and derivatives, DnD3.5/pathfinder (wich I hate with passion now) and different osr games of late. No NuDnD unless is a good book please, I try to not get in there anymore.

Also how would be a society based on this kind of stuff. If I had to choose, magic would exist but in a more limited way than bazaars of +5 vorpal swords ala DnD, but I really like alchemy and using the parts of monsters to make bombs/whatever (again Witcher and MH do it so well).

Check out Into the Wyrd and Wild. System-agnostic mechanics for tracking, wilderness survival, skinning and using dead animal/monster parts, lots of potions and concoctions. It was the Witcher-hunting-scenario go-to when I found it.

They are a kind of aliens than the humans use to fight. Then the ayss also got humans and made they own for fighting and other stuff, as you can see riding a human-steed. Gods I love Jack Vance.

Bumping for interest. Kind of related, but the opening of John Carpenter's Vampires is pretty fun and inspiring for a modern monster hunting party.

>The Whispering Vault
That sounds more like an horros/Slaher thing than Hunting.
>>92673646
The Thing one is also pretty great with dealing with less tipical monsters.

>>92674772
Yeah, though it's not so much about monster hunters and more about survival. I appreciate the vibe though.

The Jack vance story, there isn't much good art about it.

Looking for a Venn diagram-like analysis of mythic creatures.

>"an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening"
Huh, there's nothing in there saying they can't use tools.
>>
>>92669320
Damn the dragon masters was so cool. No wonder Vance was so influential.

And apart of a few articles, no wargames about it or minis. I'm mad. I ever wanted to have more dragons ala Blue Horror.

The old Asgard Minis dragon lizards do bear some passing resemblance to all the different breeds. And they've been rereleased by Alternative Armies:
