So why do people act like pic related couldn't work in the modern day because of smartphones and the net? People watch shit online and dismiss it as fake, you can easily explain a vampire attack as some crackhead going nuts and I'm sure the Camarilla would run a bunch of falseflags online. With AI and deepfakes being around it's even easier than ever to just explain shit away as fake.

The issue isn't smart phones, it's that being anti establishment (the core thematic element of owod) is not cool and edgy anymore.
>>
It's hard to imagine a masquerade when there are satellites watching your every move and everyone has a spy device listening in on their home activity. People don't have privacy, so they find it unbelievable that a significant contingent of the population would have a private life.
>>
>>93188045
I don't think that's a problem at all. I haven't run a game of VtM set in "today" in about a decade, but it wasn't a problem then. The bigger problem is that White Wolf wrote their entire line to death. Even ignoring the end-times product line, they just published way the fuck too much and spelled out all the secrets that made the game interesting and alive in the first place. A few years ago I ran VtM set in 1915. That was awesome. I don't think I'd want to run it again in "today" simply because of the amount of shit that played into the game's late 20th century story. But cell phones and the internet aren't a problem at all. Anon we were fucking outcast dorks in the 90s and imagined a "World of Darkness" in which the internet was way more interesting and world-wide than today's "lol facebook and instagram" bullshit is anyhow.
>>

Just say it's the vampires who control the satellites and spy devices and it's coo
>>
>>93188045

It couldn't work today because gothicness and horror of that kind are mostly dead. It's very much a product of its time.

And don't get me wrong, it was great.

Goth is quietly undergoing a very successful resurgence. Honestly bands like Boy Harsher, Rosegarden Funeral Party and Glaare are every bit as good as Black Tape For a Blue Girl or The Cure. And synth/industrial has straight up gone mainstream and most people don't even consider synthpop goth at all, any more. Ten years from now, 4th wave goth will have started in 2016.
>>
people go on and on about smartphones but in the old WoD universe you have a gigantic conspiracy of mages who do sympathetic magic with satellites and guns and photos and shit
they know vampires and werewolves exist and don't really do anything about it
>>
>>93188045
Even fakest and gayest conspiracy theory has hundreds of believers, and things that would have been a successful coverup before are now just "you're not allowed to talk about that".
The 2nd Inquisition actually handles it decently although it could use some work.
>explain a vampire attack as some crackhead going nuts
It's the other way around, film some crackhead attacking somebody and half the internet thinks it's zombies. The masquerade has been broken in a world where vampires aren't even real. They would need to do the thing where there's no in-universe vampire media to popularize the concepts.
>>93188053
It's edgier than ever. It's only not cool because a lot of the old guard either won or sold out.

Why'd you repost this thread without changing even a single word of the OP?

>they know vampires and werewolves exist and don't really do anything about it
Mostly because the splats do not interact well together. Technocrats are supposed to want to hunt down every Reality Deviant they can, and they certainly have to tools to wipe out the masses of lower Licks there is out there, but it would make for a shitty game if every Mascarade session had an dimension-shifting cyborg hunter killer pop up at the end and party wipe the Troupe.

Mage is certainly the worst of the "what we wrote got way the fuck outa control." Luckily no one played it or cared. Mages are minor npcs that make unreliable allies or enemies, once every few adventures.
>>
Two reasons really:

The first being that when oWoD was really going, conspiracy theories were fun little things people could joke about and tell each other with a laugh, like campfire stories. Nowadays its easy to find a few dozen people who genuinely believe any given statement and not in the "haha that guy wears tinfoil" sort of way but in the awkward, sad, "Oh they're abusing their kids with it" sort of way.

The second is that WoD is about surviving as a monstrous and drifting towards evil person, in a substantially more monstrous and evil world. For what ever reason a major glut of TTRPG players these days get really mad if you show a setting or characters doing heinous things, regardless of how framed as "Yes, no one here are the good guys" it is. See also: Vamps not too distant "scandal" that the ventrue orchestrated one of the genocides in the balkans.

Granted there's nothing stopping you from "finding the right players" and "playing the game the way you want to play" but the 90s era oWoD can't happen again simply because the playerbase and designers aren't there the way they used to be.

Oh go fuck yourself. We're not THAT old.
>>
>>93195695
20 in 1990 means you're 54, you're old.
>>
>>93195724
Yeah but that's an age you made up and also still fuck you.
>>
>>93192053
Being anti-establishment is basically going full /pol/tard at this rate.
>>
>>93188045
Because you'd essentially be playing a period piece game.
>>
>>93194690
isn't the weird that wod game lines were never meant to interact initially?
>>
>>93197007
Only if you lack imagination.

Book of Nod was the one that made me realize this

Just dont use a smart phone, atleast attempt to stay under cover. Cant totally vanish but using older tech will atleast help. Hell, you can have vampire raves in the movie blade and still go unnoticed kinda.

Seems to me like you should just start in 1990 for maximum nostalgia and to give the characters room to grow in power and influence at a realistic speed. And technology/computers creep in as the years pass.

If your chronicle is still going when you get into the mid 10's you could have a bunch of Boomer vampires get killed because they refuse to adjust(imagine a haughty Ventrue prince who only feeds on rich girls drawing attention and eventually getting merked because a Hunter put an airtag in his Armani shipment).

So the players and their generation are in charge now and they have to revamp(heh) vampire society by culling their numbers, only feeding from homeless people and illegal aliens, or maybe making some horrible bargain with insane debauched billionaires with private islands and friends in the government.

Mages are still fairly rare, sure the Technocrats are your MiB equivalents in high up positions, though if your Kindred are actually trying to keep up the Masquerade, they likely wouldn't get flagged by the Technocrats.
They really pulled their finger out when Ravnos' Antedeluvian awoke, though it was tearing apart India in a manner that couldn't be covered up well in a 'brush it under the rug' manner.
And this is the thing, the Technocrats aren't going to give a shit if a single Lick has a bit of a messy feed as the Consensus is still in place. You may find that Lick may attract some Hunters looking in though. Of course if that messy feed was someone close to a Mage, that's another story. Still even say that Mage was a Technocrat, unless they're high up the totem pole, the worst that'd happen is that singular Lick and maybe their Coterie if they're about will get memory holed. owod Mages at street level could do some cool rituals, though they still need prep time and if their Arete was low (generally always is, high Arete Archmages don't give a fuck about street level oopsies) there's only so much they can do - also Paradox.

Werewolf originally in it's early 1st edition was meant to link closely to VtM (some of the early supplements make this explicitly clear), it was around late 1993 that they split apart, perhaps because Mage 1st edition wasn't jiving well with the rules of the first two lines as that book and line was being finalised for release.
It was certainly distanced from by time Mage came out.
>>
Aren't vampires and other supernaturals supposed to be extremely rare anyway, it'd be very easy if you make them coordinated and very careful
>>
>>93206149
Yeah, there's 1 vampire per 100,000 humans. It's really fucking retarded to think that they'd end up getting caught in larger cities where fucked up shit happens all the time.

People act like that because the book told them to act like that. It could be easier to go the opposite route and it would be far more interesting, but writers are retarded. Pic related.
