>>93355742I still learn something every now and then, because of pattern recognition. It's worse with learning languages like Japanese, I feel the impossibility to improve there.
>>93356860I lack the visualization skills to see more than 2 or 3 moves ahead unless the pattern is obvious. I’m 2200 in puzzles on lichess and the ones I get wrong I have literally no idea on. Makes me think I’ve hit the edge of my processing power.

Prove (or disprove) the following statement. If you have a proof, phrase it as precisely as you can, with reference to the rules of movement, while at the same time presenting your argument in the most concise and readable manner possible:In any given legal position, a pawn standing on its fifth rank has at most three distinct legal moves.
>>93357573whats your rating?>>93338919The other weekend I met a couple playing chess, they invited me to play against the girl (since she was teaching the guy). She was good and we played for 2 hours while the guy watched. We ended up agreeing to a draw.Has /tg/ cucked someone for two hours? it would have been way better to defeat her in the end I guess.

Looking for some advice here. I'm 31 and have been playing blitz and bullet for about a decade now. It's usually just to fuck around and I quite enjoy it. I also enjoy watching chess streams e.g. Simon Williams. Rating on lichess is ~2000. I never do puzzles or study openings.Anyways, I was considering starting otb tournaments and seeing if I could get over 2000. Anyone else have a similar trajectory as me? I'm wondering if I should order some chessable courses and start level grinding, or if I should just keep having fun with it.
>>93362157>just keep having fun with itDefinitely this.
>>93362217I might see if I can boost my much was rating to 2300 by doing a few chess able courses and taking my chess more seriously. Maybe that'd be a funner way of doing it. I rarely play slow time controls. I might start doing that more as well.

Highest win of my life bros. I clicked him thinking it would be fun to get blown the fuck out but I actually did it.
>>933577301/2Proof:By the rules of movement, a pawn standing on its fifth rank may, if possible, perform one of five distinct types of moves: normal movement forward, normal capture on either side, or capture en passant on either side. In two similar pairs of cases, the existence of one possible type of move excludes the existence of the other possible type, such that there are at most three distinct legal moves that a pawn on its fifth rank may make in any legal position. The below descriptions assume that in making the given moves, no other rules of movement are violated, e.g. the pawn to be moved is not pinned to its king.If the square directly ahead of the pawn is empty, then the pawn may advance forward one square, as usual. On either given side of the pawn, the pawn may either be able to capture an opposing piece normally, or to capture an opposing pawn en passant, but it cannot be the case in a given position that a pawn might, on a given side, choose to capture an opposing piece in either or both of the ways on a given side. For if on a given side an opposing piece stands on the square in the sixth rank where the pawn may capture normally, then it cannot be the case that an opposing pawn had just advanced two squares forward on that side on the last move, as this path of movement was and is just blocked, by the piece which may be captured normally. Similarly, if on a given side an opposing pawn has just advanced two squares forward, to end on its own fourth rank (which is the original pawn's fifth rank), then there was no piece, much less any other opposing piece, standing on the square where the en passant capture may be made, such that only en passant capture is possible on the given side. Similarly, these observations apply to the pawn's other side. Furthermore, since two pawns cannot be moved simultaneously in a given move, en passant capture is only possible on one of the two sides of a CAPTURING pawn, but not on both.*
2/2Thus, in any legal position, a pawn standing on its fifth rank has at most three legal moves, which situations can be characterized into two "maximal" species as follows: either the pawn may capture normally on either side and has an empty square directly ahead, or else it may capture normally on one side, has an empty square directly ahead, and may capture en passant on the other side (while it cannot capture en passant on both sides).*Comment. Although it is impossible for two advancing pawns to simultaneously offer themselves for capture en passant to a single, potential attacker, on the other hand it is possible for one advancing pawn to offer itself for capture en passant to two adjacent, potential, attackers, e.g. the silly but quite legal line 1. e4 a6 2. c4 a5 3. e5 a4 4. c5 d5, at which point either 5. cxd6 or 5. exd6.Noting the mutual exclusivity of "normal" capture and capture en passant is also helpful to understand WHY the en passant rule itself requires immediate capture, or not at all: the two-square advancement of the pawn ensures that the empty square remains empty at time of capture, such that there is no ambiguity with the "normal" rules over which types of capture may or may not be possible. Consider the following little farce: 1. b4? h5 2. b5 a5 3. h4 Na6. Here, if the en passant rule didn't entail immediate pawn capture, then there would be ambiguity as to which piece is to be removed from the board when the pawn captures at a6. The knight, the pawn, both? The knight has filled the void, adding confusion. Thus, the rare and unusual en passant rule nevertheless "plays well" with the ordinary rules, and does not lead to contradictions or confusion. It is a well-formed rule which is consistent with the simpler rules, but which requires its own details (immediate capture or not at all) to be so well-formed.Obviously, I have totally failed to satisfy my prompt condition that an explanation should be "concise". But at least it's correct.

how do you actually start to learn chess? and im not talking about like the rules or whatever, i mean what actual decisions to make. i checked the rentry link but theres a lot of other different links and i have no idea where to go with that.what do you do for openings? do you just stick with one?a lot of openings i find on youtube seem to assume your opponent will do something else, and then you do something to follow up with it. what if they do something else?for a frame of reference im more familiar with card games (stuff like poker and also mtg-esque games)
>>93397451>what if they do something else?Use the explorer at lichess to see what most people do. But at low levels they don't follow openings theory, so it's pointless to study what masters follow for 7+ moves. >you just stick with one?One for black and one for white for beginners are enough. If you try something different, repeat the line for dozen of games until you understand what's going on.
