Why do ancient board games have simplicity and elegance, but modern board games have kitchen sink designs?

you can learn the rules of chess, shogi, go, xianqui, majhong, poker, blackjack, viking chess, snakes and ladders, checkers, in 2 minutes.

But modern games are like 30 minutes of rules.

They were meant to be playable for people who learned the game entirely orally, not from an indexed rule book

There are tons of good simple games that are even easier than chess.
Even cat themed ones.
You are just too lazy to look.

Modern ability to store and share information coupled with increased leisure time.

Checked. Also:
>less free back then
>simple designs are more memorable so they last longer
>paper rulebooks don't last very long
>more complex board games basically weren't invented yet.
>>
You will never learn mahjong.
