How come there are rarely stories with multiple "dark lords" operating simultaneously? Am I expected to believe Sauron is THE big bad and there are no rival uber-powerful evil wizards in the east...a place where average people torture and eat dogs for fun?

Why does the average rom-com only focus on one or two couples and not bombard the audience with brief flashes of every couple on earth condensed into a 95-minute runtime?

Eberron is a major offender of a setting wherein multiple conspiracies of extremely powerful supernatural beings are competing over who gets to shape the world to their whims.
>>
>>93406939
>rom-com
False equivalence.
>>
>>93406915
I ran a oneshot game a decade ago where every PC was a dark lord or evil mastermind, at the cusp of the heroes' victory. The heroes had gained sufficient power that no one villain could stop them, and thus the villains had a desperate last minute alliance (and this set up for backstabbing galore in the finale)

I can't remember the details, but /tg/ takes credit because one of the villain PCs was literally just Deep Rot. Thanks, /tg/.

>a place where average people torture and eat dogs for fun?
Heh.

I do happen to be running a campaign like this, with all the evil leaders operating a coalition to control the vast majority of the world's resources and vital industry and spreading themselves out throughout the lands to maximize their influence, but their relations are always in danger of crumbling into hostility, especially if my players can manage to become savvy to making it happen and stop being a bunch of schizos.

>How come there are rarely stories with multiple "dark lords" operating simultaneously?
Because fantasy is meant to be an escape from the real world.
who cares? If you played games (ծ_o) you'd know you don't need anyones permission to put multiple dark lords into your game.

>>>/lit/
No, I don't care that you don't like that board, and no, you not liking that board doesn't make your post about games.
>>
>>93406992
why did you spoiler deep rot?

For effect. I'm just a faggot like that.

There are a billion competing dark lords

This is actually very very common in traditional games
>>
>>93407992
Yeah, but OP said stories, not games.
He appears to be unfamiliar with games.

There might be tyrants, some might even have some magic, but none of them are fallen angels like Sauron.

YOU MEAN LIKE SARUMAN, YOU FUCKING RETARD?
>>
>>93406939
Everything Everywhere All At Once?
>>
>>93406915
Because in a game it would end up like that gay rights in Faerun story but with another dark lord instead of gay rights
>>
>>93406915
You mean like sauron and saruman?
>>
>>93406915
Lord of the rings literally has Saruman acting as a 2nd dark lord with ambitions to equal or surpass sauron.

But also
>Why dont stories focus on stuff far away
Because its far away and thus unlikely to be relevant.

When the noble knight is busy rescuing the kingdom from Dagthar Soulrender it doesent really matter that a couple kingdoms over Urzhak Deathfiend is trying to summon the demon lord Setheth into our world, thats not part of whats going on.
>>
>>93408560
He couldn't possibly be trolling, the post is still up.
>>
>>93406915
Sauron isn't an evil wizard, he is the most powerful of the fallen angels and their leader. It's like asking ''hurr how come there aren't multiple satans?" because he's not an ambitious guy who rose to his station but a being that is a fundamental part of the cosmology of the setting.
>>
>>93412180
Technically morgoth is the satan of that setting

Isn't Saruman on Sauron's side?
>>
Dragonlance 5th age had multiple giant alien dragons with their terraformed domains ruling the continent.
>>
>>93406915
Exalted covers this. You've got the Deathlords, the Yozis, the Fae, the Scarlet Empire, the Locust Crusade, and any number of individual or groups of Exalted looking to gangbang Creation into a new age.

Asinine question
>>
>>93406915
Sauron, the Balrog and Smaug were all huge threats that stood a good chance of dividing up middle earth once the latter two were roused.
>>
>>93406915
>Am I expected to believe Sauron is THE big bad

I was gonna comment on this, but I see a dozen other smart & extra-handsome Anons have taken the bait for me: >>93409287 >>93410349 >>93411832 >>93412180 >>93419789
Because I was absolutely going to bring up the fact that the Balrog and Smaug were both 'evil guys' who didn't hold any particular allegiance to Sauron and were just kind of going their own thing. (For that matter, one of my favorite hypotheticals is to think about what would happen if the Balrog got the One Ring.) Even Saruman is, ultimately, just playing a long with Sauron and making the mistake/cope that Evil is so strong it can be used to squash Evil.

Parallelism is more common in fiction than you think - have you considered you're just bad at consooming? :T

God that would be an awkward reunion. Then again they were both servants of morgoth, I could imagine them developing a hierarchy once they determined which was most powerful.
>>
>>93412279
Yes, but he's kinda out of the picture.

honestly I don't know it just felt dramatically appropriate to put the reveal of "old /tg/ lore" behind a spoiler tag, as if it's some ancient secret.
It's not and I'm just a colossal faggot.
