>vs. "we have Leto Atreides at home"
Gee, let me think.

Dark lords are pretty boring desu. They're pure evil becuase they're evil and aspire to do more evil. Sauron is that to a T, even the Emperor as poorly wirtten as he has been is more interesting than Sauron
>Sauron can't leave Barad-dur because reasons
>The Emperor can't leave Terra because hes a semi-alive-corpse tied to a machine thats a galatic light house mockingly called the Golden Throne.

LOTR is groundbreaking for its time, but we have simply move on culturally. The only serious dark lords in books these days is in trash booktok romance books

>People liked lord of the rings back then, but those were less enlightened times and we need to break away from themes people like and start deconstructing everything because we know better now.

Yeah, I don't think so. What was good then is still good now because it's just good. Just because you personally don't like it doesn't mean that all of society has some kind of problem and needs to "evolve" until everyone matches your tastes. There's nothing wrong with a simplistic villain, if anything, we need more of them, considering how many writers try and fail to create villains with nuance. Some succeed of course, but many fail and make the villain worse, or come off as ridiculous.

Not all change is progress.

I get your points but Sauron is not even a character in the series named after him. You have to go to the Silmarillion to get any real info on him. Sauron is not even a simplistic villion heces a piece of paper labeled 'villian'.
How are his orcs mutiplying signifying his rise in strength? No one knows
How did he bind the mean of Harad and Rhun to his side, why do they follow him? No explanation. LOTR is a good story but Sauron is not a good villian, you could remove him from the story utterly and his the idea of evil be his stand in and nothing changes. Sauron is meant to be a personification of pure evil made manifest like the devil. But Tolkien by doing so makes Sauron not a character hes just a noun people react to.

consider: dark lords are fucking cool
>>

>No one knows
>No explanation
So what? It doesn't change the story in any way of the reader knows, it doesn't affect the choices of the characters, it doesn't change the stakes and what they need to accomplish. Villains are diminished by readers knowing too much about them, because that always leads to nitpicking and deconstruction of why they do everything, and more than a little of it is motivated by dumbasses who want to find something sympathetic so they can feel better about wanting to fuck Sauron. Evil for the sake of evil, is the best kind of villainy. Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.

>How did he bind the men of Harad and Rhun to his side, why do they follow him?
9 rings for mortal men, doomed to die
of the 9 kings who were given the rings, 7 of their kingdoms fell. Harad and Rhun survive and do what they've always done, follow their kings

Gondor and Rohan were founded by descendents of the men of Numenor who were not given rings of power
>>
We obviously need an alternative 40k timeline where Big E turns to the dark side and becomes the 5th Chaos God.
>>
>>93917258
ADB pls, you already wrote that into End and Death Pt 2
>>
Great Man of History Fallacy.

>Sauron
Literally the darkest lord to ever dark lord, the OG really. So dark all his images need to have the gama turned up to be seen.
>Leto Atreides from wish
Can't even not fucking glow for 3 seconds.

Is this a bait post?

Retard.

Some of it is, and basically everything post tolkien has been progress. Sorry.

He's right. If you wrote a sauron style dark lord into something today everyone would find it boring. People appreciate villains with more complex motives and characters now.

>>93919006
Yeah like WH40K Emperor, right?

ok, George

>>93919011
Yes. Look at the board. People love debating the poorly written motives of the primarchs endlessly. The only thing anyone cares about with regard to sauron is a cool set of armor that was invented for the movies.
>>
>>93919037
well if you must call them "people"

>ad populum
Guess the bad guy in Fifty Shades of Grey is the best written antagonist ever (assuming it has one).
>>
>>93916302
>They're pure evil becuase they're evil
What?? They aren't.
>>
>>93917279
Anon, we aren't on /his.
Btw even on /his you would be wrong.
>>
>>93919190
>ad populum
The entire argument is that a different style of villain is more popular now. Are you retarded? It's not a fallacy to say something is more popular when the argument is that something is more popular.
>>
>>93920000
>Are you retarded?
Are you? "The entire argument" is who was the better dark lord and then your retarded and fallacious argument is "retards like me like gobble this slop now".
>>
>>93919006
Remember that "everybody" lost their mind over a nothingburger they called a pandemic.
>>
>>93913582
i dunno who the wow guy on the right is, he looks like he's from the alliance so why would he count as a dark lord?
>>
>>93920000
Warhammer is literally a meme, you can't seriously use it as an example for what is popular *now*, it has mountains of ancient grandfathered popularity
