>>94033151Are they even RPGs? They essentially boil down to giving everyone a script and repeating it word for word? The replays, as they say.
>>94033538The replays are someone else's game rewritten for reading, they're not meant to be a game themselves and have never been called a game themselves. They're solo entertainment and/or a tool for introduction or inspiration for running or playing in a specific game, much like reading storytime threads here.
>>94033151Been reading Raxia live since it got translated this week. Will be using it in my game, the work skills are really flavourful.>>94033538Low effort.
>>94033151We're back again. Uploading this previously shared PDF, but there's much more available on the discord.I ended up not working much on SMT X things this weekend, other projects and jobs demanded my attention. >>94034174Looking forward to the 1.0 release. Good luck on wrapping it up.
Embryo Engine(?) released recently, right? Does anyone have that? A Japanese mecha ttrpg sounds like it'd be great.

RPG was different.So...>it's the preview adventure from the book, but i change a few things: the village was closer, and the woman showed up in an emergency, the wagoneer was ready to turn right around with the help.>characters are:>WARPRIEST: a Fighter/Scout/Priest who thinks about the Roman Empire everyday (scout class rolled at random)>ALCHEMIST: spear and shield wielding sorceror/scout who makes potions and can light blades on fire. A cool dude.>LIZARD RENDER: not part of the adventure guild, this freelancer is a poor bastard who bareclaws it. Monk/Dragon Priest>and i had to run a character as well, (no ranged boys) so i rolled one up at random.>RHEA SHOOTIST: on the surface, a short-bow wielder, but has a level in Shaman that gets him 2 uses of Firebolt>(fuck around and find out, the party)>Ep.1>The Warpriest happens to spot the bare hilltop after grilling the driver for information. Avoiding the village, he tells the driver to stop 100 yards down the road, then tactical deploys out the back, right then. Lands hard, but is able to start sneaking down the cliff.>Rhea Shootist has a WTF moment and decides to just follow suit. Lands better, but has a time trying to get down the cliff easily.>(the party is split, somewhat)>The Alchemist totally botches the roll to see the Wolves guarding the bare hilltop, and he and the Lizard just wiggle down the cliff once they stop.>Warpriest sees the wolves. Shootist comes up behind him a turn later, the two decide on a plan. not a good plan....>but a plan nonetheless. The party goes stealthy and eventually find the door. One Goblin guard.>Alchemist has a sling. Concern from the party, they catch a few glimpses of gobbo's inside. no one gets spotted.>Nice.>Once the kitchen-side settles down, Alchemist uses some scout-tools to undo the inside latch and slowly open the window.>On the other side, Warpriest has found the study window and is wondering how to get in. (it is higher up, like a skylight almost)>Lizard is seriously thinking of just walking in the front door.>Alchemist and Shootist slip inside the window, but Rhea lands a little hard. Alchemist hides behind the door, Rhea hides in the pantry.>One Gobbo checks the room with a glance, grunts, and leaves.>Lizard opens the door and springs the Oil Trap>closing the door, he goes aside and uses some dirt n' moss to mop up the oil.>Warpriest decides to remove the panels from the study window, then drop in.>someone on the inside goes to investigate that opening and closing door though...>Lizard goes to walk back inside the door.>Open the Door,>steps on the floor>.....no one walks the dinosaur> Hobgoblin seen the Lizard just walk in from down the hall.>Lizard man steps back and does the "Homer into the Bushes" thing with the door closing nicely.>Hobgoblin has a WTF, then charges....
>>94040786>...meanwhile, it took the Warpriest 2 turns to remove one of the window panes so he could drop in.>Hobgoblin tries to Kool-Aid man the door>rolls a 3>he smashes into it, breaking the glass, and wrecking the door, but most of the timber is still there.>initiative is rolled....>Alchemist goes first. He comes round behind the Hobgoblin and crits him in the back. Zero Armor result>Lizard sees the Hobgobbo's head is even with the broken-out door-glass, and pokes his claws into those eyes, 3 Stooges style.>also a crit! result: goes prone.>whole party agrees that the Hobgoblin is too big a thread to be left alive. >Alchemist is next to the prone Hobgobbo's head, so he aims for the ass...>...with a Firebolt. rolls okay on the spell check.>on 3d6, rolls a 4, 5 and 5. vs. zero-armor... 14 damage finishes the deed.>I declare the firebolt drills through the ass and charbroils the Hobgobbo's balls.>Hobgoblin dies curled in a fetal position cradling his roasted nuts, smoking out the ass.>at this point, every other goblin has been alerted.>which is a great time for Warpriest to drop in via the study-room window.>lands right next to the Goblin Shaman.>roll initiative, everyone!

One gets a hit, measly 3 damage.>Ruckus ensues over 2 turns.>...meanwhile, Warpriest has come up from behind and took out the goblins covering the objective door.> he secures the prisoner>Alchemist is going full protagonist, and has killed a Goblin every turn of combat>Lizard did as well, but it's more savage: Bite, Rip and Tear!>dust clears and 10 goblins lay dead.>the party likes the result, and casually decides to take up Goblin SlayingWhat We Learned:-- block is very effective against low level enemies. if they do less than d6 damage, you might as well be immune.-- spells are rare by comparison to other fantasy, but they hit harder...usually.-- the mechanic numbers are smaller than in other RPG's, but the effect comes off about the same.-- being 2d6 based, you don't see crits that often...seeing 2 at a time is super effective!-- the system is surprisingly comedy friendly.

I'm planning on running Ventangle for 3 players on Halloween as a one-shot break from our regular game, with an appropriately thematic short story. Any anons have any tips on how to GM this well?

What sort of thing distinguishes "Japanese" games, mechanically? Have there been any movements a la OSR, ruleslite, etc?
>>94042919On a very broad and assumptive level, JTRPGs can be pretty focused in scope and more conducive to one-shots than prolonged campaigns. It's a wide space with plenty of stuff going on; like all scenes, there is no singular monolith.
>>94042919>>94043144This. I'll add that it's more a stylistic thing than mechanics-related. Japan likes to make/play 1-shot adventures over long campaigns b/c of time constraints from work, so they tend to fall into easily identifiable/common stereotypical characters who are easy to pick up and roleplay on the fly. I could be wrong, but I get the idea that being able to make a character fast is important, as most games have quickstart rules and/or very clear steps to char-creation, and many adventures come w/pregens so you can start playing ASAP.
>>94043144I'm currently trying to make my own game based on these rules. Since its easier for me to use rules as a baseline. Think it would be possible to sell it on my own or would you need permission from FEAR? I also plan to add a whole bunch of my own unique mechanics so it wouldn't be exactly one for one a copy of these rules.
>>94042320It's not the first time either. In SMT1 instead of Commander Thorman there was US Ambassador to Japan Thorman. No matter what you do he nukes the fuck out of Japan.
>>94040594Nice, I only tangentially know how GS plays but its cool to see a little writeup. I was gifted the rulebook for Christmas last year, but I haven't made time to read it.
>>94044476the book should be easy to read, despite it's absolute girth. (600+ pages)Again, I wish that the supplement could have gotten officially translated...
>>94042505Thanks, but I'm laughing at the >for many players, just multiply the HP x # of players, loladvice.
Is anyone interested in translating Nobunaga Mork Borg? How popular is MB in Japan?
>>94046257It was made by the veritable Yusuke Tokita, though I'm sure he did not do anything within the design space. So I've not looked at it at all.But the man is one of the most experienced designers of japanese ttrpgs.
>>94046439What did he do besides the SMT games? The design is pretty good. It takes the MB aesthetic and collage concept but is mostly original art. It has a few weak abstract pages but most of it goes hard.
>>94046567He also worked on the Tokyo mono Harashi trpg, which is crazy excellent. Paradise Fleet, for a space-faring game (didn't read it yet, but I own it)I need to buy his Abyss games, but their designs change a lot to suit whatever his recent fantasies are, or so it seems. You can find a pretty comprehensive list here https://bookmeter.com/search?author=%E6%9C%B1%E9%B7%BA%E7%94%B0+%E7%A5%90%E4%BB%8B%2C%E8%A5%BF%E4%B8%8A+%E6%9F%BE&page=1

>>94046257>How popular is MB in Japan? If the western game does not get an official J-translation, you can assume it's not known at all.AlsoSome things get stilted... if every white person in japan plays an RPG, it will probably overshadow what any native plays.>this is how influencer fags say japan has D&D as the top game.
>>94050701but this was a succesful kickstarter for a JP only game, and it's pretty text heavy at parts so the target audience isn't gaijin.
>>94050746Ok, so you had a good question.i dunno.the Japanese do not throw their numbers everywhere.
>>94033610It is perhaps worth noting that the origin of Sword World, Record of Lodoss War, is so called because it started as a written replay of a DnD campaign.
>>94051074Yes, Record of Lodoss War started as a D&D replay. They tried to pitch Lodoss as an official setting for D&D, but it fell through, so they said "fuck it" and decided to make their own TTRPG. Thus, Sword World was born, and the Lodoss setting was moved there.
>>94051344that's sadly a myth. The legend includes TSR giving them an apointment and then not showing as the final straw.
>>94051636Wait, TSR no-showed the meeting?
>>94051661I wish to believe they dismissed this weird people with their theatre novels and character cards, and then they took over Japan to show them off.Absolutely a myth with no source tho.
Well, might as well add this to one's Embryo Machine arsenals. the full supplement will come later.
>>94051671I'll be hard to get to the bottom of that unless we ask any of the remaining players if they know.Even then, it'll still be in the shroud of mystery.>>94033276one of the troves got it's files zapped, the other is still up.
>>94034174Is there a draft pdf of everything done so far? I got a prior draft though it lacks the skills, equipment stats and demons.(I don't have discord)Super eager to see the pdf in full when you release it!
>>94053181Yep, but too big to upload here for now; so I have triple crispy fried it. When I have the whole doc done, I'll make a lighter version that's under 8MB (currently only 35MB which is pretty good). The current draft has every page (~313) but many are still blank or templated. The last thing on my list for the "playable version" is the demon list, which I'm just around halfway finished with as of last night. (Not in the PDF yet)
>>94053099Answer's far simpler than the other anon made it out to be. Group SNE's representative Hitoshi Yasuda said in an interview that TSR wasn't particularly interested in the Japanese market beyond rubber stamping their own translated content, and at the time the rights to publish D&D material in Japan were divided up between two different companies, so they'd have to pay licensing fees on top of the other legal issues of working out who gets to publish what. So Group SNE basically just took what they had and repurposed their homebrew material into an official setting so they could better profit off of what they created. That's basically it. If TSR's representative blew them off is mainly conjecture, since in the end it primarily came down to them realizing they would deal with far less red tape to just shave off the remaining obvious D&D bits and make it their own legally distinct setting and system.(And if you don't want to take my word for it, which I'd say is valid since trusting anything blindly on the internet's not good for you, a lot of interviews with the creators of Record of Lodoss War/Sword World are compiled in their own separate book https://www.kadokawa-zaidan.or.jp/product/301712000897.html)

>>94064832Sword World has lots of neat spells
>>94033151Are the barbarous guys in sword world always evil?
>>94067163Yes but also no. It's more they're (almost) always chaotic. They aren't pure evil like demons and there's playable barbarous in the form of Weaklings, but their society is a brutal "might makes right" one so they're pretty much evil. On the flip side, Kobolds are low enough on the totem pole that they can integrate pretty well into human society.
>>94067254Thanks.
>>94067254Weaklings, and also some other Barbarous who can technically integrate, if possible. such as Lamias, Dhampirs, and the Weakling version of Drakes, called "Broken Drakes"
>>94067545>DhampirsHOL UP I can play those?
>>94067657oh yes. You can find rules for them easily in Sword World 2.0, they're in Cardia Grace supplement or the Barbarous Book core book.for SW2.5, once embargo's done, they'll be available in Barbarous Saga. (in about a few days from now)

>>94091454From what I understand, the chance to apply a status effect is predetermined by the skill used, and then the victim gets a recovery roll at the start of their turn based on their vitality. However, it's mentioned multiple times in the rules that even if you have a target number over 100%, you still fail if you roll 96 or higher on your % dice roll. Still awful, but technically usable. I'd probably house rule it so recovery rolls only happen at the end of a turn so they have to suffer the status for at least the one turn.
>>94091629So:>Warpriest is off on his own chumming goblins and blocking like a champ. >>94091454>>94091645Pretty much correct. My personal rule would be to just use 40% + VT (so a range of 41 - 80% chance of recovery). Also keep in mind BS is subject to affinity multipliers and critical hits too. Speaking of, Magic attacks can score criticals, lol.If you want Luck to factor into BS%, I would apply something like LK/2 to the chance (or maybe even full Luck, why not). In the supplements a system of "skill ranks" is added, where BS skills of a higher rank have a higher chance to apply by a flat amount.
Finished the Duo Adventure of Sword World and really enjoyed it. Made me really sad I'm not rich enough to commission N+1 two player cyoas. (We're moving onto Revulture now.)Sword World was neat though, think I might wanna try running it for my group. What's there a reccomend go-to for a beginner pre-made?
>>94093310There's a big list of scenarios listed on the drive, just find one that matches the level and you should be good to go. would recommend "The Shard Eater Labyrinth" from Start Guide: Granzale or "Defeat the Barbarous" from Core Rulebook 1. Just fluff when you think needed.
>>94093310im glad you enjoyed it :)i really need to get around to checking out Revulture myself...
i have only read a few JTRPG books, but god the design are somewhat really awful to read,>black and white even illustration >Next to no highlight text so quick ref something is a pain in the assand with physical books some publisher are so fucking cheap their paper are see through so it hurt your eye to look at. First few sword world 2.5 books are like this for some reason
>>94093310I like reading campaign books for inspiration and insight into the world but they make the exploration too structured for my liking, almost like a board-game.Then again, I compensate by reading a lot of stuff to make my own free-form campaign, material like supplements, lorebooks, replays, etc, the recent "Raxia Life", "Barbarous Rage" and the short stories book ("Land of Curses and Blessings") have really flavorful segments. I know it's kinda autism on my part to want to get to know every inch of the world before running a campaign, you don't need to do this.
>>94093864That's because most of them are designing into a cost-effective print standard (even indies, because the dream is to print in most cases from what I've seen.)Check out Silver Rain or Meikyuu Kingdom if you want some full color shit.

Here's a cute, simple system that's getting an English translation. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ynnis/nobi-nobi-rpg
>>94132370It doesn't look that exciting.
>>94132405They're just an easy entrypoint for getting into TTRPG's. If you're already in the hobby there's not a whole lot for you outside of the novelty, or trying to bring new friends into the fold. It's the kind of thing I would've liked to have 20 years ago when I was curious about TTRPG's; a cheap starter set with few rules and minimal setting knowledge overhead.
>>94132370>>94132405It's clearly another interpretation of "babby's first TTRPG," but from Japan. If you're in the scene already, this doesn't appeal much, but if you have absolute 0 XP newbies, this may provided a guided tour to the types of things you'll find in the hobby.
Has anyone tried Ryuutama?
>>94133348I ran a couple of games. What do you want to know?
>>94133348Yes. Most people botch it like 'tards. This is not helped by the fact a lot of the reviewers on the 'net have gotten rules facts wrong.Like, you DO start with your mastered weapon...
>>94132370>https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ynnis/nobi-nobi-rpgNovi-Novi is getting a translation?OK.I mean, that's cool, but it's like translating the Teletubbies.
>>94133348Yeah, it's fun, light and easy to grasp.
>>94136732>>94137011>>94137075I have a cafe and we do board game nights. Looking for a light rpg that might be easier to teach to new players - would this maybe fit the bill?
>>94133348>>94136732>>94137011Is it just me or are the weapons in Ryuutama really, horribly balanced? I mean why even bother speccing in unarmed? Why bother with some of the split stat weapons when there are others that derive from double stat? Some are just seriously weak with no upside. It's something I don't like about the system that jumps out for me.
>>94138601It's a fairly light game. If you're doing it with absolute beginners I'd suggest using picnic rules for equipment and traveling. The only real catch is travel, as while Ryuutama is famous for its traveling rules, they're actually quite light and boil down to just repeating rolls for each day unless you fluff things out to make it interesting.

>>94141517Golden Sky Stories is another translated game. It's really simple and cute.
>>94140748Do this >>>94103316 but on any Sword World or official/fan translation or official localization server. Yes, the Sword World server has Reddit-level moderation, but that’s where you can branch out to other fan translation servers.
>>94141700It's going on the list then!
>>94091716Finding the system pretty fun & simple, easy to pick up and play, though a surprising amount that's actually emulated from the vidja in a simple manner.Level 5 starting is very weak though, even with Awakened PCs. Bumping up to a Level 10 Gate Power for the party starts to make them feel more like a party of CoC equivalent adventurers with TNs, may even look into going to Level 15 starting out to make the party feel capable without them going too OP from the start. You def need to min-max your 5 stats if you want to be capable of doing what you want at a fair consistency for Lv.5 to Lv.10, not a bad thing though, the vidja are made in this manner too. Very punishing to those who want even stats across the board though.Past that, Demon Fusion is fun and I like that the Demons have a d10 chart for random skill use per turn, similar to the Xeno actions in the Alien rpg. Really glad to see them listed now & run some one-shots.
How much of a difference is there between Sword World 2.0 and Sword World 2.5? I ask because the troves link to the Google drive for the 2.0 material.
>>94144204They're close enough that you can even use 2.0 material in 2.5, there are some big changes like how turn phases work, how the Fairy Tamer or Alchemist classes works, some magic here and there, etc.Typically you'll want to dive into more 2.5 material at first, then you can start branching to check 2.0 because it does offer a bunch of unique stuff like a completely different region, lore about the world, niche optional mechanics that simply don't exist in 2.5, etchttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LmF5BxOe71JbHNaYgsIHAKpd-HIRjgFwSW 2.5 has 3 Corebooks but you only need "Corebook 1" to have a grasp of the game and actually play it. Read Corebook 1 > Read (or watch >>94140447) one of the Replays for a more tangible idea > After that everything goes, you could alternate between the "Character Building Book" (supplement) while reading the Corebook 2, Corebook 3, Magus Arts (magic), Monstrous Lore (monsters) and Epic Treasury (items, mounts and extras like Advanced Combat). Obviously there's a bunch of other books and stuff.
>>94144122I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. You're pretty much spot on RE: the power levels. The benefit of starting sub 10 is probably just not overwhelming players w/ too many skills. Since the case is that the TNs will blow way past 100% in short order, esp so if the min maxing continues past the early levels (not to mention adding in weapon modifiers)... The game does not do well with skill-check based gameplay at the low or mid-to-higher levels.BTW I just updated the drive w/ a redone intro replay. Give it another read if you've already read it before :)
>>94144501Cool, will do! I dunno about the overabundance of skills, yes there's a ton listed in data, though a Lv.10 Awakened character will have 4 to use. Though perhaps in Japan they have less time to stress on that? I think also starting at Lv.5 gives the players that Soulsborne feel of going up against heavy shit knowing they're weak and seeing how well they can do.One thing I struggled with was info on the Demon Cards. The info is there, though it's scattered around the book in various places and I'm assuming a Summoner gains a contracted demon once they have access to their Card, though also it says in Fusion that you cannot use more than 1 non-card demon, after referencing a contracted demon as an example of that. Conversation rules says that a demon can give the Summoner their card and then leave.Having weapons locked behind Gate Power and Vitality of the user seems fair to not get too wild with it, to me as a player I prefer the magic. If I played I'd do a Psychic-Summoner and spend starting macca on Armour. Zan doing 50% chance of inflicting Stone for 3 MP is an excellent Spell when not using contracted Demons for whatever reason.
>>94144501>>94145789Doesn't sound like the system functions at higher levels. Why play it?
Does anyone know a japanese trpg that could possibly be used for something like Bofuri? I don't expect to find something thats going to work 100 percent since the way the characters aquire certain skills and use them is pretty crazy at times. Which is the whole joke with Maple I guess. But maybe there is a game i can workshop a little.
>>94147360I'ld assume Arianrhod. But again, it's only partially translated.
>>94148677I'm tempted to get some of the supplement books off bookwalker, might be some potential there.
TouHou + TTRPG would be fun.
>>94145789Ah, a few points of correction. A Lv 10 awakened character should have 3 skills from each of their classes, and two additional skills (1st level and 10th level). That's not too many, but I meant that more in the sense of brand new players. You're right about contracted demons being odd. The book uses it as a Defined Term, but never actually defines it. Basically, a contract w/ a Demon card just means its "being used" (in a summoner's compendium, an outsider's amulet, or a successor's weapon). Typically a demon cannot be reverted to their card form, so this is a prickly. I think they're just trying to be roundabout in covering their asses about people ending up with "Less" demons. Like two Demon PCs fusion is NG, same as two Outsiders fusing their demons together. In reality, they shouldn't have been so weird about it, and just let players figure it out lol...Also, Zan (and all Force skills) have a chance to instantly kill targets who are affected BY stone, not inflicting stone in the first place.
>>94146474It functions just fine, but you need to know what you're going into. It is not really a game that emulates CoC, or D&D, or dungeon crawling. It's a game made up of a mash of systems that intertwine to produce a structured way to present, investigate, and solve, "Mysterious Incidents" to put it vaguely. You can use those systems to play however you like though, for example the games I've run so far were more focused on exploring an dungeon crawling, but the games I was a player in spent more time on the Approach and info-gathering phases, leaving the dungeon parts more abstract & quick. If you're saying that in regards to the TNs being crazy... Well, the solution is to not use dice rolls as a crutch for arbitration, or if you must, figure out a different way to calculate them (50% + Stat, 10% + Stat*2, whatever feels best).
>>94149441There's two out there. One I have yet to read, but it's in one of the troves. The other on the other hand...
>>94150310what about it?

>>94151457if you really want something different add Floria: the Verdant Way...you can't even play a normal human in that setting.
>>94146474I'd say it functions well in mid-levels. I haven't messed around with seeing how end-game levels play out for PCs, as I've yet to run this and I just wanted to make my players moderately capable going in. Lv.15 is for sure a nice sweet spot after having a tweak around, still has limits to what you can do, though being able to do what you can equals roughly how a CoC or DG game with starting players may go. The game recommends in the GM section that Lv.10-20 is a good place to start. There's 100 Levels for PCs, it's not like how D&D is where Lv.20 is a fair end goal. You're gonna still be in early game at that point. It's a fun system with easy to understand stats and it isn't bogged down with CoC's overly massive list of skills, so I really like how in theory anyone from a beginner to a veteran rper can get enjoyment from it.Also Demon Fusion is just really fun after giving it a few tries and going to higher levels give you more options for it.The d100 system also gives a clear indication of how possible a check will be and you can also multi-action, where if your stat TN is 100%+, you split the TN to do 2 actions (so if your TN is 120%, you instead can do 2 actions at 60%).Boss monsters at higher levels will be spamming attacks, though also your defences, buffs and debuffs should be just fine to deal with that.
>>94149627You are correct on skills, I was tired yesterday in all fairness. The demon contract/card stuff def needed some clarification, though of course I know you didn't write it, plus it's not a biggy.Thank you also for the clarification on Force spells, that makes way more sense!
>>94151457I genuinely like Konosuba and Goblin Slayer, both use a very similar system & have official English releases.Konosuba feels more crunchy though gives lots of choices for building PCs, Goblin Slayer feels lighter though has a more restrictive feel to what PCs get going in.
>>94151441https://chireikiden.tumblr.com/narratographhave a look, yourself.Notepad didn't like it.
>>94149627I got a question on Demon skills (for those a summoner has contracted), they shouldn't have access to the Boss skills, yeah? It's just, the summoner starts with a Lv.4 Pixie and on her demon card the Dia skill, which is the main draw for having Pixie in the vidja, is listed as an asterixed Skill (that Bosses choose from if they roll a 10 for their Action). The Demon stat block key mentions that Normal (non-Boss) Demons do not use skills marked as such, though also I'd hazard a guess that doesn't count for a demon card once gained or PC demons (Pixie as a PC has Dia listed as a Skill, however as the pregen PCs all have their bonus Skill included already & Dia is one you can choose, it's hard to tell). In the vidja when she joins you, she has Dia to use.Knowing what skills a gained Demon Card has is important for Fusion, say I want to fuse Pixie with another demon my PC gained, I'd like in general in the vidja to pass on Dia for the healing. Her having Zio & Hapilma is fine, though it feels odd if the Summoner's Pixie can't have Dia.
>>94152517Yea, summoners can use the asterisk skills. It's just a bit of clever design so that not every pixie is sending out Dia's in a fight (Though, just a 10% chance still wouldn't hurt...).The only skills a summoner (etc) couldn't use are those specifically marked as NPC-only or BOSS-only (Things like Call Ally, or Dragon Eye)
>>94151470Thanks! Didn’t know about this one!>>94151700Thanks! I enjoyed the anime for both of them and interested in giving them a go. If not mistaken they’re something like a lite version of Sword World?
>>94151457Shinobigami and Kamegakari might be worth adding.

>>94159497Well, the fact it's more a board game with mechanics that can be cheesed VERY EASLY... ...and mostly for cosplayers in mind.
>>94161392Seeing as NA doesn't actually play games, I'd have to see it in action first.
>>94152663Cheers, that makes sense. One more question: Summoner gear is related to Lv.1, it gives Pixie Lv.4 as your starting demon and then equipment for higher levels mentions you may purchase higher level stuff using macca, so a Lv.15 summoner starts with 750 macca (Level x50).In theory to help boost their starting demon, am I right in theory that a Summoner could purchase a Lv.6 Goblin card (600 macca) from the Cathedral of Shadows using their starting macca & then fuse it with their Lv.4 Pixie to get a Lv.13 Aquans with 1 inherited Pixie skill & 1 inherited Goblin skill?
>>94153351I believe so, yes.
>>94164784That's a good call, and the authors provide a many different options for higher starting level PCs. I am working on Diamond Realm right now, and it has a relevant section (snipped):High-Level PC Creation GuidelinesGuideline 1: Equipment GPWhen creating high-level PCs, you may replace initial equipment with items of the same type as long as they do not exceed the current GP limit. With the GM’s approval, you can start with one melee weapon, one ranged weapon, and a full set of armor (including accessories) within the GP limit. The GM may restrict the available equipment based on the scenario. If using currency to calculate the value, choose the higher amount between "Level × 50 GP" or "Level ^3."So you can say "Deck yourself out in GP 15 gear" (or limit it to 1 weapon, 1 armor, however you want) or "Here's like 3k Macca" (Even this amount is woefully low compared to the cost of gear / consumables, but I digress). Note that the rule of "exchanging the class' initial equipment with a GP equivalent item" is also valid, when acquiring classes later. Also note that Demon PCs by these rules get their base demon, and up to two demon cards to fuse with (when starting sub level 20). You could say that the Summoner has Pixie, and two cards of their choice, or let the summoner change Pixie out for another demon entirely. Point being, the classes aren't really meant to be grown from Lv0 if you're doing a higher level start (!).
>>94162794Smooth Burn!I do think it's funny you only play as named characters....not a problem since ( CAST )
>>94167811>Smooth Burn! It's not meant as a burn in the slightest, the guy literally does not playtest the games he reviews. He offers a nice overview and is great for catching obvious glaring issues with games, but I've personally run into multiple games where it didn't really click together for me until I played a proper oneshot in it. Thus, I take all of his reviews a pretty hefty grain of salt knowing he hasn't actually seen many of the games in action.
Sword World fun. Probably my favorite fantasy TRPG atm
>>94172727The translation team on the other hand can go fuck themselves
>>94172983What'd they do?
>>94164948Dumb question I know, though what is 'Level ^3'? I've never seen that math symbol before.I'll be running the game at some point and after toying around, I think Lv.15 is a good starter, starting as a one-shot (dunno what it will be plot-wise yet), though I'm thinking it'll be near time-line wise when the Douman fight in the original SMT is. If that goes down well, I'll let the players keep their PCs and go through a lil campaign if they want to.
>>94173403It's pretty rare to see it, but that means a power/exponent calculation (usually the 3 would be superscript). In short, it's "Level cubed" or "L x L x L."By all means let us know how your one-shot goes :)

>>94172983>>94173378>>94178219>>94179286>>94181053A resounding case of "what the fuck are you talking about?"
>>94181053Yeah it's amazing fucking work for a fan-translation, full PDFs and all. Some real condensed autism at work.
>>94173458Okay, so Level 15 would be 3,375 macca - that's quite a bit, though if you got there from Level 1 I could see that being achieved.A Goblin demon card would still cost 600 macca & desu, for over 3000 macca you could get a single Level 14 or less demon card, or a few to make a party and pre-game fusions.I'll probably doing it at some point in November, get the pdf on my tablet, show people interested to session 0 make characters with them and my initial thoughts for an opening to have them meet in a prison facility they've been flung in (for whatever reason they each decide) as Tokyo is getting out of control by the appearance of demons running wild. They'll escape, go through Devilman style shiz and I plan to end it at Echo Building in Kichijoji, where they'll discover why demons have started appearing (also Zombies) - or something like that, Douman is higher level in the rpg than the vidja, as is Amanojaku, it'd be fucking rough for to make either a Boss for Level a 15 party, so by necessity things will go different for the party compared to the Heroes of SMT 1.One thing I want to sorta do if it does go campaign is to make the Alignment points they gain mean something, though I don't know what yet.Obviously Thorman and Gotou's scuffle will direct them one way or the other (or they can veer to the Rebellion for Neutral).I'm a lil ropey as a GM though each time I've done it I've learned and improved. I'd love to play, though I find I'm more suited to run games.
>>94176575>They're playing Battletech in that image, btw.I gotta question - what Era?I wonder, does Japan have a battlemech meta where certain eras and/or point totals for Lances/Stars are used?
>>94173458So basically if the demon card is Level 10 or less, it'll be their Level x100, for Level 11+ it'll use the cubed cost.Good to know.
>>94181920regarding the PDF, I'll be transposing the Demon lore blocks sometime this week. Maybe even tonight. So look out for that, same link as before. I've also been dipping into the Diamond Realm supplement, which does in fact add more systems and rules around Alignment. Mostly, it impacts Conversation checks, but it also adds Faction as a system (Faction Points, Contribution Points) to the end of helping/stopping certain factions from progressing towards their Final Project.
>>94181244Wait, I think it's that one poster in an earlier thread who wants to curse the Sword World translation team in order to "Restore the Karmic Balance" or something.

>>94155004>>94178752Thanks! Managed to get them, can’t wait to try them all out!
>>94185423Not out until November afaik. An anon here is translating the core for the SMT 1 & 2 version of the same rp rules.
>>94181988Cheers anon! The one thing I think would be really helpful also is the Index Page of Demons listed in order of Level, to flick to demon stats quickly and see them in order of Level to help less flicking through the Demon pages during sessions.Going through the Demons, I'm getting more inspired in what I want the one-shot dungeon to be, I just need to decide on a Boss. I got three Lv.15 candidates, probably won't decide until I see what the PCs do in the scenario.
>>94186941Yea after the demon lore blocks are finished, all I need to do is fix up the sheets and printouts, copy them into the PDF, then tackle the index. The Demon-by-level one is a for sure thing, the general index requires me to reorganize it entirely, since its in japanese-alphabetical order, so its still sitting at a "maybe."Also, its usually recommended for bosses to be ~10 levels higher than the PCs (GP+10), with 1~3 minions. Of course, adjust as you think is necessary; a Boss with Weapon Use is going to be dealing x2 melee damage compared to one without, so be wary of certain modifiers. Part of the approach phase is also learning about the boss (and if they can exploit its weakness), so I would advise against saving it for last.>>94185423November 5th~

>>94033151Why are dragon girls a low key staple jttrpg character type that seems to keep popping up across various games? And in additional supplements for a lot of games you often see rules to play them A player in my sword world group is playing a lilidraken
>>94201209Here is some more art she used for her character
>>94201214Lildrakens aren't exactly supposed to look like that, though...Then again, there's barely any female Lildraken art out there, save for some few replays.
>>94203503Well, male and female lildraken basically look the same, or so says the lore. Apparently there are differences, but its hard to tell unless you know what to look for. So.
>>94201209>>94201214>Dragons are cool>Girls are cute>A dragongirl is cool AND cuteThis shit ain't rocket science. Also, the character is an OC named Solo Vivace. She pops up in Pixiv Fantasia.
>>94201209What games even have them? Lildraken are dragonfurries rather than proper monstergirls, you'd have to play as a Drake for those pictures to be accurate to SW. I can't think of any other JTRPG that has em as a default pick either.
>>94207231truth.
Could someone post the ryuutama 2nd passport supplement PDF? I'm surprised it's never been uploaded in our trove. My phone got destroyed so it's lost. And maybe the first supplement too.
>>94208675wait, what?There's more?yes, I know there's more, it's just that KHI being lugs.
>>94211502I mainly want to see the pictures again. Someone bought and shared their scans last year but for some reason , it's not in the ShareThread or if it was, it's all gone and only the core is up
>>94208675...you are asking for a holy grail.I know the raws exist, I'm gonna jump if anyone has even a fan-english translation.
>>94208675Just posted it in the Share Thread. Have fun.
>>94213299Thank you so much! Just sawIt looks even better than I remembered
>>94213299can't wait for them to eventually get Fan-translated.
>>94214687I think the gist of 1st passport already got translated and in holiday pack. Passport 2 has translation as well, apparently. Hadn't seen that one personally
>>94215017Honestly didn't know about that...
>>94153351Konosuba is more like a lite Arianrhod.Goblin Slayer is more like a lite Sword World RPG, albet changing a few things here and there such as spells having usage limits instead of a dedicated MP system it's related game has. It also has an attrition system that's kinda unique to it. Though a few campaign books in Sword World also have said attrition.>>94181940Honestly, no idea... All I know is that they have at least gotten from Succession Wars to the Clan Invasion, from all I know.I think ye'd likely get your answer from /btg/ if anything.
>>94207800unless you're playing something like Arianhrod or Cray Adventure TRPG (which doesn't exist) which have "Dragonmen" and "Dragoroids" as actual races in that setting.
>>94216629Is the Konosuba book really poorly translated? Read something about a lot of rules mistakes.
>>94219474Well, it's less they're poorly translated and more like there just dull.Hells, the only available "Races" are Otherworlder, Inhabitant, and Crimson Demon Clan.Arguably, the only real reason It got translated was Franchise Value. They could have gone with SNE's Dark Souls or something but well...Damned hope SNE's Armored Core TRPG does awesome.
Huh, so SMT Tokyo Conception got delayed for three months. Specifically for physical releases. Digital PDFs will still be available next month, though.
>>94219474yeahhh in my opinion is just not that great of a game. It lacks options, and there is a very clear mechanical bias towards martials, because you resist magic by evasion, so a thief with high evasion is basically the best defensive character against both physical and magical attacks...and that is sort of silly. Nothing you can't fix with house rules, but my group just back to Sword World after playing Konosuba for like 5 sessions because SW is just plain the way better game. Also, there are some formatting and layout problems. The enemy stat blocks are a fucking mess, for example. That didn't help either.
>>94215017There is so much good shit in there base game of ryutama is kinda Incomplete without them Caraven rules, water travel rules
>>94033151i can't seem to find (i am still unfamiliar with the books in general) the monster book for sword world v1 and v2, the 2.5 one is called "Monstrous Lore", do the earlier ones have different names? I am referring to the google drive collection with the english translations. Thank you.
>>94227397I don't know about 1.0, but 2.0's Monster Book was called Barbarous Tales.
>>94227559thank you, we are getting somewhere
>>94227559SWRPG's monster book was "Monster Collection", but the complete edition compiles all of that into the book. Said translation of Complete Edition is still forthcoming. Then again, they also adapted Monster Collection as it's own stand-alone thing. (Which also got a gag series spin-off which barely anything to do with the card game.)
>>94227742thanks, so its no available yet. Are there any amazing monster books from other japanese rpgs i should look into?
>>94227742I found this show to be hilariously funny at times, its great. Its a shame it shares its name with a Pokemon toy line that far overshadows it
>>94228021There was?oh well. I know it was indeed dubbed in EN, by FOX Kids of all groups.Guess that's five for five for SNE property animes getting dubed?
not a jtrpg but here are some anime girls doing a live play of a murder mystery:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhFvq4owWSwbehind the scenes:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLsu9ZOlzjY
>>94231146Vtubers are not anime girls and you should kill yourself.
>>94232461They are anime girls insofar as anything is anime girls.
>>94232461anime girls can only be real if you take the next step, anon
>>94232461They are anime girls, except the seiyuu's talk to you in real time.
>>94231028Yeah, but I didnt watch it dubbed, though I did see the first few episodes of the dub and the voices are really good in either I think, but its definitely a dub where they change things. Some jokes are lost like the villain being gay and the old man constantly trying to give him "manliness" training to undo it
>>94232461They're 2.9D which is .4D too many for even the most extreme stretches of 2D.
>>94232605I think about it every day
If Vtubers make TRPG streams, and it's a legit attempt, I don't see why we can't at least mention it...Fubuki did Emo-Klore promotions, that's about as JP TTRPG as it gets....
>>94231028>>94227742the full series is on youtube:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKlt8XyC_oZhtyQHy3gnCoNcsBKfIVk1x
now a Curiosity, what the hells happened to ver.Blue Amusements? Fer context, they are the group to brought over Double Cross 3E.From what I heard, supposedly the lead dev behind the translation actually died or something. If the group is dissolved, does this means that the missing supplements are open for fan-translation?
>>94181940JP meta is all introtech, all the time.
>>94186941Just wanted to pop in and say as of 5m ago the SMT 200X PDF is officially Complete with sheets, indicies, and everything else that was missing. >>94090627
>>94187772I actually swung by to ask about this. I saw in the book that Bosses are that Level. So I probably will spring in the one-shot the Douman boss fight on them, as it's a one-shot I don't mind if he does a TPK on the party. That said, looking at the enemy stats, I may just do the Amanojaku fight to end the one-shot instead. It has a decent amount of Defence & HP as is, plus at Level 22 it'll be 7 Levels higher, so makes a decent mid-boss (explaining it's a Mid-Boss encounter also should shit up the players enough to consider there's bigger fish out there too!).Douman has Row Spells that on avg doing 60 damage are gonna ruin the party's day if they don't have healing items (I'll highly recommend they look at getting some anyway).>>94246626Thank you anon, you have done great work!
so... what's particularly distinct in ttrpgs as opposed to western ones?from games/anime, I can't see much particularly unique, but I'd assume at least some creators might have made cool systems?please tell me what have you found in japanese games that you really like
>>94255202The design philosophy is pretty different. For example some of the systems are more designed to have a single long sitting rather than a series of regular length sessions, often with low amounts of character advancement if any at all and the single sitting being the full story.
SMT 20X feels too "videogamey" to me, trying way too much to follow videogame logic that honestly doesn't translate well to a tabletop RPG
>>94240319>now a Curiosity, what the hells happened to ver.Blue Amusements? Fer context, they are the group to brought over Double Cross 3E.>From what I heard, supposedly the lead dev behind the translation actually died or something.>If the group is dissolved, does this means that the missing supplements are open for fan-translation?From what I know leader was suffering from a serious medical problem and had to abandon the project. I dunno if they are still alive or not. But after so many years I think it's safe to say that this project is abandoned. So fan-translation is okay to do if you want to.
>>94256195>, often with low amounts of character advancement if any at all and the single sitting being the full story. This led to the popularization of systems that it's not Character that gains EXP but players and GM. So after each session Player can create a new stronger character or improve old one.
Tried Shinobigami as my first JTTRPG, wasn't too impressed.I have a hard time describing it, but it felt both rules-lite and extremely rigid in structure at the same time. You essentially take turns glazing your own characters and making a single roll. Scene.I don't know if that's just this system, or that's how JTTRPGs are in general.Doesn't help at all that the lack of love for the translation was apparent. Seriously, how do you do stuff like forget the cover art in the pdf, or make a table of content only ~4 (!!) entries?I don''t know if the Kickstarter ever sent out the supplemental material with the rules for "normal" characters to the higher tier backers, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.
>>94261988Yeah, Kotodama Heavy Industries translated JTRPGs are well... ...both good that they are translated, bad that KHI are just crap. There's also been a large number of supplements for Shinobigami, that aren't likely to be translated... ...unless someone does. For stepping into JTRPGs, many would say either Ryuutama (also translated by KHI, but had some of the supplements translated as holiday stuffs) or Kamigakari (Serpent Sea had a bit of an issue, but they did fulfill their initial promise of officially translating the game and the first two supplements, the rest of it have been fan-translated, and many say they are straight-up superior translations). There's also Sword World that's out there that's dang good, and the Kobold Translator s a bloody machine as translating them, hells, he's currently working on a replay that only recently came out because it had data on two new classes! So to sum it up. fer first timers for JTRPGs, Ryuutama, Kamigakari, Sword World... ...or Goblin Slayer TRPG (it's in one of the troves or you can buy the book off of amazon or something, it's around $25 CAD.)
>>94261988Shinobigami is a very specific kind of game.it's both PVP and a 3 part drama that just happens to have combat.Any other JTTRPG is a better choice for a 1st.
How adaptable are Sword World or Kamigakari for making heavy adjustments to the setting or substituting in a different setting via reflavoring? Like running KGK in a fantasy setting or running Sword World in Mystara or a homebrew setting?
>>94266829For Sword World, it would be a lot of work. The rules are really built around playing in the setting of Raxia. Soulscars, the style of Magitech, the adventurer's guild, has multiple mechanics built into it for the sword shard reputation system. You might have better luck using Goblin Slayer since that setting is much more generic or give Raxia a chance it's a cool setting.
>>94266829Sword World is honestly significantly more tricky to homebrew. stuffs without taking out the world setting. Though, if the Monochromatica supplement is any idea, then mayhaps it IS possible, just damned tricky. (There's also a replay that was published on a paid site where the party get's warped to Forcelia)
>>94238671Don't do it, anon
Does anyone have the Ryuutama raw? I can't find it in the mega, unless I missed it
>>94269826Nvm, I'm literally blind
>>94199967What is wrong with Vagrant campaigns? I only saw the concept on the Outlaw book, but couldn't see anything wrong with it.
>>94271161It's a different feel. no Adventurer's Guild support, rep may be harder to obtain, but also easier to lose unless you have high rep. Pretty much like a classic D&D party, complete with Murderhobo situations....and there goes the bump limit.
>>94271714Bump limit on /tg/ is 310 posts. We've got a few left.
Oh shit, haven't seen a JTRPG thread in a while. Isn't Meikyuu Kingdom finally getting an English release?
>>94069808Ouroboros is kinda broken, don't let anyone play it Purebreed and you're good. If you're running a longer campaign, ignore the EXP rules at the end and just give it out as you feel like, as the system is very much made for one-shots and less so for longer campaigns even if it's capable of doing so, otherwise the players will forever feel like they make no character progress, though be careful with overall balance.>>94240319>>94258962Speaking of, anyone has scans of any books besides the ones that were translated? Getting a fantranslation going for those would be useful.
>>94273823Honestly, I have no idea if there is scans out there, or if they can be acquired as a PDF... but there is a lot of content that's available for it. Such as OverClock which throws in a little Isekai into the mix!
>>94273560Yes, by CMon. Tho it's promised to be released mid to late of 2024. Haven't heard anything new the past year since the announcement on Oct 3, 2023
>>94279801wait for real?
>>94283580Well, it's been a year already and still no news. dunno if there's an issue in the chain of command or something stupid happened or something.
>>94277949I just saw the RAWs MEGA and apparently there's the Crawling Chaos expansion, which makes it feel very CoC-like in elements, on top of the new syndrome based off of the setting. It's in individual images per page however, which is kinda not ideal, but I'll take that over nothing whatsoever.
>>94288875well nothing's stopping ye from compiling those images into a PDF.
