TL;DR
- Idea is PMD x Abyss Delver (Made in Abyss)
- No corruption mechanics, but traversing between and through strata is still a difficult, treacherous and effortful task.
- Everyone is located in Relic Town, around a fuckoff-giant Mystery Dungeon (of unclear and possibly infinite depth) in the ground known as the Abyss.
- Create characters following the rules of the PMD CYOA, with intial tokens from the Grimbright scenario option. (+15/+15)
- If you're planning on exploring the Abyss past the second stratum or so, you should probably purchase a Guild Badge and sign up with a guild.

Expanded Lore Document that You Should Probably Read: https://rentry.org/pmdabyss

Mysteries for this scenario:
First Stratum: What's Eating the Berries?
- Recently, Delvers close to the Public Steam Elevators have reported a weird lack of berries on all the trees that would normally grow them. Who, or what, could be the cause?

Second Stratum: Statue Garden
- A section of the Petrified Forest lacks its usual trees. Instead, statues of all sorts of Pokemon, petrified in various poses, take their place. Some Delvers swear it wasn't there the last time they went through the area, but with the dungeon constantly shifting, they are somewhat unreliable. Were the statues ever alive, or just decoration all along?

Third Stratum: Cave of Wonders
- Recently, a Beheeyem resurfaced with one half of a golden, Rabsca shaped token. They were cagey about where they found it, but rumors started to spread about a cave full of magnificent treasure in the Eroded Desert that one could find only if they united the two halves of the token. But is it real, or just an ancient trap?

I don't have any notes about Alpha though I consider them more like a bunch of individual Falinks running around leading the guild and assisting teams, the big form is if they just all gathered together at once for some big fight at maximum potential.

Otherwise they stick to normal falinks numbers or less in little squads of one leader and the five or so little shield dudes.

Each individual group would be weaker than a normal falinks but as they gather together into increasingly bigger formations they get stronger.

You are missing John's intro from a couple threads ago, Lushian's intro from last thread, Grim as a whole, he is an explorer and has an intro too, Jinci the Aggron which should be an explorer but maybe will post an update with a fix. That's about it, you also adopted the type method for question marks but that's fine.

The first one is in fact a shitpost by a fake build. The second one should be it, I remember reading it, but it 404s on me. Either I have a problem or the author deleted it, at this point we can only ask the author about it and wait. You did a good job.

I deleted it thinking I was going to change the origin to Natural, but since we've accepted isekai legendaries, I've restored it with the same link, that I will repost to try and increase the view count:

>BACKGROUND
Hikari was once a devoted Shinto monk, tending to a tranquil mountain shrine in a remote village. His life was dedicated to rituals, prayers, and maintaining the sacred grounds. One evening, as he ascended the mountain, the sky darkened, and a radiant beam of light enveloped him, lifting him off the ground. When the light faded, Hikari found himself transformed into a Volcarona, awakening in a world inhabited by Pokémon.

>PERSONALITY
Hikari is a serene and respectful individual, deeply rooted in his spiritual beliefs. Despite his transformation, he views his new form as a divine sign and continues to live by his principles. Mistaking Pokémon for yokai, he treats all creatures with profound reverence, believing them to be spiritual beings. His unwavering faith and calm presence make him a cherished member of his explorer team, using his potent flames to ward off and *purify* dangerous Pokémon in the lower levels.

>MISSION
Convinced that his presence in this world is part of a divine mission, Hikari has joined an explorer team to explore and purify the Abyss. He believes the Abyss is a sacred realm, and as he delves deeper, he restores ancient shrines and creates new ones, offering prayers and blessings. His primary goal is to uncover the sacred secrets and divine relics within each stratum, driven by a duty to protect and honor the spiritual world, restoring balance and harmony wherever he goes.

Initially, I imagine it's a mixture of relief and excitement - finding someone who understands what the human world was like. Probably more than most he would inquire about how the lives the other Isekai characters lived, looking deeply for some reason as to why the gods chose these people in particular (then it would mostly come down to individual personalities).

I imagine Red is probably the most frustrating of the lot he has to deal with. Their reluctance to delve into their past life, and their troublemaker ways probably has Hikari constantly lecturing at them to stop being a disrespectful whipper-snapper.
>>
>>94207812

If I was going to pick a time period approximate to our world, probably 80's to early 90's. He was an old man living in a rural town when he was brought into the pokemon world, so could even push it out to the late 90's and just assume he was ignorant because of his age and lifestyle.

Quiet and aloof, the other residences of Relic town suspect Kombu was an isekai'd human from another world. Very secretive and reserved, Kombu rarely attempts at socializing or making friends with the other inhabitants and always end up rubbing off the wrong way.

Kombu has an incredible knack for botany, figuring out how to graft apples, sitrus and leppa berry branches onto his body's outer kelp foliage to grow more of the fruits. He even managed to cultivate a steady supply of tiny revival seeds.

He has began selling them, by leaving his produce on a little wooden stand setup in front of his little burrow of a home with a sign post list of prices and a jar to collect the proceeds. Relying on the honour system and the kindness of strangers just to avoid social interaction.

Recently Kombu been hesitantly signed up with the explorer guild, in hopes of exploring delving deeper into the dungeons to find and study more of its anomalous and exotic flora.

Although Kombu's true intentions and goals remain a mystery, the residence of Relic town are begrudgingly willing to give him a wide berth with the hopes that he will gradually open up to them.

/mcyoag/ has avoidant personality disorder. They can not imagine that builds would ever cross paths by coincidence, destiny, or shared interest, so everyone has to be forced into the same tiny space. To produce the illusion of adventure, some street level powers are painted over whichever building that you're shoving all those waifus into, but not so much that they can affect monumental change. [...] It's like a nuclear reactor, you're trying to produce energy (writefags) through the random friction between the radioactives (superhumans) that you've compressed into critical mass (Hogwarts), but never so much that it changes the shape of the system.

I think I follow? Nobody wants anybody playing with their toys? So what would the alternative be? Letting some students not be at Hogwarts? Or setting different "generations" of Hogwarts students, so that some were students in some stories, and fully grown professors or ministry workers in others?

The alternative is not being a fucking school setting, the concept of adventure is incompatible with the institution of schooling. Readers are into schoolslop because they're 1; children or the adult state of children that bought into the schoolslop racket, 2; invested in the idea of becoming more powerful inside a safe environment.

Interesting, I can see him having some cool conversations with the gamers in particular, as they would have access to informations about the pokemon world that the average pokemon does not, in particular legendaries. Since Hikari already thinks of the plkemon as kinda gods I would assume he is particularly interested in knowing the ones that are considered such by the pokemon themselves. I can see some cool interactions with that. Lushian will approach with the usual idea of warning about the dangers of this world but as he realizes that Hikari is way older than him he may let go of his cynism a bit, he can recognize when someone is wiser than him.

I know I'm relatively new here, but is PMD really THAT bad in order to completely kill the general for multiple days? Or is this just a normal slow period?
>>
>>94220609
It was already dead before, PMD has nothing to do with it. If anything at least some people are working on that now, it was even more dead before. Despite what the shitpostes say PMD was never that bad, there are just a couple dedicated shitposters that hate it, and it's used as a scapegoat when they want to blame someone.
>>
>>94220640
It doesn't seem that bad, I made Sack and its been chill.
Its because school is in session rn isn't it?
>>
>>94220659
We've got plenty of times when school is in season and things aren't so dead. This time of year is usually pretty slow though.

Personally I just think we don't have a topic to discuss, so the only people posting are the troublemakers that want to shit on stuff.
>>
>>94220659
That's the point yes. Apart from the dedicated and easy to recognize shitpost build the cyoa is fine. They just like to blame it when they need a random cyoa and since it was not run in a long time it was targeted. School did lower the activity yes, but it may not be that specifically, children are not the only ones with less free time after summer, others also go to work. Some could be teachers too, they also need to go back to school, they actually start even earlier.
I am working on stuff at a slower pace than usual but I am still working on it. Does Sack go around telling people he was human or does he keep it to himslef? I have some stuff in mind and it would be usefull to know.
>>
>>94220717
>spoiler
I have a writefag up that kinda addresses it, but he doesn't explicitly tell people but his mannerisms and knowledge are way different to the point where if they ask he'll say so and people can guess pretty easily.
>>
>>94220685
Speaking of topics to discuss maybe we can come up with a couple more mysteries? The cyoa kinda revolves around them so it would be a good idea to at least talk about it. Or see which ones that are already there can be adapted and how, I personally think the Zero Isle can work, as a side thing maybe.
>>
>>94220753
Good to know, also you reminded me that I need to catch up.
>>
>>94220759
Well, some of the original mysteries could be used. Like the tournament one. Of course, there's also the ones posted with the CYOA to explore. Otherwise, I guess we start with broad concepts:

-Searching for a party that went missing
-Searching for a specific item, like some rare medicine
-Investigating an anomaly where something showed up in the abyss that isn't supposed to be there. I.E. why is there a hostile legendary in the second strata. Why is there dungeon mons that speaks but just says creepy shit. Etc.
-Diplomatic troubles where some foreign poke nation wants to take over ruin town to have a monopoly on the abyss and it's treasure.
-Some weird curse or disease, like explorers getting mind controlled.

Anyone else have any ideas for mysteries?
>>
>>94220953
Kill one of the dumps. There is a murderer on the loose in Relic Town, the others try to find him before he strikes again.
>>
>>94220965
One of the dumps didn't even get included in the build list, so he's on the chopping block anyway.
>>
>>94220609
You have to be REALLY new to have missed the KtH dead period earlier this month.
>>
>>94221003
I mean it wasn't this bad then
>>
>>94220953
How about Relics? I don't think we are taking enough advantage of the Abyss in that way yet, all the mysteries seem something normal PMD would have. Maybe not the second one, I had an idea that it may be caused by a relic.
I like your general ideas, I will think about something around those lines, they also work as a setup for relics too.
>>
>>94221093
Good point. I honestly forgot Relics were a thing. Ignoring the longevity of mps, it'd be cool if the plan was for each mystery to involve a relic, eventually ending in each member of the mp acquiring one until we all have a single relic each. Ideally in some thematic way where the relic relates to the character or their personal journey in some way.
>>
>>94221130
That is a really cool idea, but more of a character arc thing than a mystery. I was thinking more about starting with relatively simple and useless relics and working our way up, what you describe kinda needs the relics to be significant both narratively and power wise. We can start working on something along those lines tho, all 3 current mysteries can be caused by relics if we get a bit creative, I am not sure which PC they would be most appropiate for. For now I will keep thinking of some simple relic like the lightstones that can be found around and still cause some mystery. I actually just got an idea for something really cool but I need to think how to word it better.
>>
>>94221225
Then maybe we could blend the two ideas, like maybe there's a higher grade of relic that really rare and at the heart of each mystery, and those end up being one per character whereas regular relics are less restricted. We might have multiple or none of the latter depending on personal preference, but we'd only have one of the former by the end.

As for the current mysteries, I guess it depends on exactly what kind of relic we argue started them. For example, the missing berry mystery could be invisibility (someone is legit eating all the berries), some kind of non-specific compulsion affecting dungeon mons (it caused the dungeon mons to become really hungry so they were eating berries), something relating to vegetation (took nutrients away from the berry trees, causing them to no longer produce berries), or even some kind of teleportation effect where it introduced a dungeon mon that's not normally in the first strata to the first strata... etc, etc.

So I think it's more important to look at which PCs want to be involved in that mystery, and to work backwards from there to try and think of a relic that fits one of them.
>>
>>94221312
This is a good idea. Relics are already like that, some are just stones that lught up for no apparent reason and can be found pretty much everywhere and then there is the regeneration coffin and the wedges that are absurdly powerful but hard to find and sometimes even use. These 3 in particular are the first 3 mysteries and as such, because of how the progression works, everyone will want to inreact with them to a degree even if they don't want to solve them, they would not gain points otherwise, which may be a problem. I think that's more of a flaw in the cyoa itself, people gain more points by appearing in other people's works regardless of what it is but to auto progress you need a mystery, it does encorage collaboration but it also limits creativity. But I digress, I can only speak for myself and I was planning to work up the ranks similarly to how the game works, skipping the more boring parts,so the first strata mystery is at least on my path, gathering missions are on the first rank, I don't know if I should solve it, I was leaning to option 3 by the way, some kind of poison relic, it makes more sense to be a "not important until proven otherwise" moment, Lushian would assume it's just a truble mon making his work harder, we do have a mon that is literally that, so unless he runs into a proof of signigìficant danger to the town he will just try to essentially speedrun back to his old rank.

I think the first mystery fits someone else better anyway. I was thinking on a whole questchain for mine that involves a whole list of scatterd and apparently useless relics that only start revealing what they can really do when combined, with the final piece being the thing that keeps them together, but that's very long term.

I will keep thinking of stuff as I write.
>>
>>94221626
Honestly I'd just be happy to see the mp move along and gain traction, even if not everyone benefits equally. Whether that's ranking up or solving mysteries.

Either way, whether he works on the first mystery or his own chain of relic fusing quests, I look forward to Lushian's adventures.

I actually did have an idea for a relic, one that's relatively simple and thus could be considered one of the "low-tier" ones: It simply grants the holder the effect of an Ability based on the holder's type(s), and perhaps the Abilities they already have.
ArchieAnon btw
>>
>>94223070
This actually sounds cool, a bit like nature mints and ability capsule. It sounds like something that has multiple instences but is still rare to find, a good balance for a low tier relic I think, it would not be gamebreaking but still positive.

I will ask you the same question as Sack, does Archie tell people that he is a human or does he try to keep it hidden? Rumours tend to spread regardless but does he personally talk about it? I am making a sort plot point of this because I think it would make sense as an interaction later.

>>94221697
I will keep writing as long as I keep getting inspiration regardless of point gains, honestly with the next one I do it will be already 2 writeups without point, but maybe we should ditch the restriction. Would it make people more willing to write if they could write whatever instead of being restricted to mysteries? I think it would but I am not as affected.

Thanks, the next two writeups will be at least related to the first mystery, he needs to pass that section anyway. After that I am not sure but I have stuff in mind, this is probably the MP I have the most ideas for.

>Sack's First Adventure (Sack, Alpha & co, Epsilon)
Finally caught up, very interesting perspective. I like the detailed description of the guild and the registration process, it was very interesting. I also like the idea that Lushian just did not notice all of that because he is too jaded by now and is used to it, combined with the fact that being a dark type now he would be immune to psychic type powers, so his registration had to go differently.

Good first adventure, gives an idea of the tone.

>>
>>94223845
I think you're allowed to mix.
>>

The last time we talked about it we were pretty chill about it, as long as the move was in one generation list I guess we can use it. We have different tupes and stuff anyway, being a bit more free does not seem that big of a deal.

I was planning to have even more time shenanigans by making Lushian die later than both Archie and John but somehow end up in the pokemon world several decades earlier. I think it's an interesting idea, but if it makes the timeline too fucked up I can just leave it vaguely in the past.

Sword and Shield made TMs infinite use, and then created TRs which are just... TMs again. I really don't know why they didn't do that the other way around.
>>
>>94225275
I mean Tinkers the one eating them for sure.
>>
>>94225540
nta, but eh. I get that it's in character for that PC, but that's not really the point. The point of a mystery is a setup to tell a cool story. Having it just be a an overeating adventurer feels anti-climactic. Like less mystery and more minor fetch quest.
>>
Why?
>>
>>94225568
I mean its still a problem that needs to be solved.
Maybe the first suspect is Tinker because its so obvious and then it turns out its a Alpha Snorlax or something and she's just being blamed.
>>
>>94225585
Yeah, a twist like where the tinker is falsely accused I can get more into.
Honestly I'm hoping for the real cause to be something a bit more fantastical, like the berry trees are actually sick because something went wrong in the ecosystem of the strata, and maybe the mons need to go on a little fetch quest to find a tuft of suicune fur in order to purify a water source or something.
>>
>>94225632
Weirder take, all the berry trees in the strata are all part of one massive single organism kind of like the Pando the Quaking Aspen super organism in Utah, and at the heart of root network is where the relic is embedded, an ancient pot. Any plant planted in it grows at an accelerated rate. The berries are missing because the massive collective berry tree organism is dying, the relic accelerates the tree's growth as well as the aging process, the elderly berry tree organism is nearing the end of their life cycle, its up to the mons to replant the first strata with new berry trees to restore the ecosystem.
>>
>>94224211
Repeating the same unfunny joke over and over is simply tiresome.
>>
>>94225754
This open a couple of writing avenues. Perhaps the berry tree was planted by someone and their remains, camp remains and maybe memoirs are still there buried and perserved by all the roots? Perhaps that individual planted that tree for a loved one? And due to circumstances outside of this individual's control, the special other couldn't visit him maybe it was forbidden love? They probably promised to meet in secret at this strata at some far future date, forlorn the gardener planted a berry tree, vowing that they'll meet under the tree's cool shade and they'll enjoy its sweet berries. But it never came to pass.

>>94225632
I was doing something of the sort for my first adventure, Tinker would be probably even more pissed at whatever the real cause is because it's preventing her to eat. Lushian would assume it was her and ignore the problem, then meet her by chance leading to the discovery that she's even more of a prblem now since she has less food. This would lead to a short confrontation and Lushian recognizing that maybe the problem is bigger than he expected and may be worth looking into. If someone has a better idea I can just come up with something else.
>>94225754
I was thinking of a poison Relic slowly killing the whole strata starting with the plants, but your idea is more interesting. It's a bit flawed because a single tree would produce only one berry, unless they get actively modified to produce different berries, at which point someone would have to know that the trees are actually just one big tree. These can be solve in relativley simple ways depending on where you want the story to go, it could be a side effect of the relic, it also causes mutation as a side effect of hyper growth so the berries are diffrent. Or it could lead a bit more into the next idea.
>>94225834
This took a strange turn for a mystery dungeon plot but it could also lead into a second idea. This caretaker could be the reason the tree produces different berries instead of just one type. It's called grafting, the caretaker could have noticed that the tree was expanding into a forest and they could have decided to make the most of it, grafting other berries and turning the plant into a supposrt for others. With time the caretaker died like you said, creating the sad backstory and memoirs, and people just forgot that the one pot was at the center of it all. Overall I don't have a preference for either solution, feel free to come up with something else too, I just found those cool.

This conversation took an unexpected turn.

>It's a bit flawed because a single tree would produce only one berry, unless they get actively modified to produce different berries, at which point someone would have to know that the trees are actually just one big tree.

>This caretaker could be the reason the tree produces different berries instead of just one type. It's called grafting

Trees can naturally merge together by the truck or roots through a process of inosculation simply by growing so closely together, the outer barks scrape off, callus or soft tissue grows over the "wounds" and eventually the vascular tissue (the xylem and phloem that transport the fluids and nutrients throughout a tree) interconnect together until a pair of trees become one. This can happen repeatedly over time until all the berry trees in the strata became interwoven into a singular whole.

Also if you cannot tell already I made that Tangrowth botany and gardener build here >>94208307

The mons once discovering the plant pot relic, might start questioning my Tangrowth PC, asking him how he's so knowledgeable about plants and botany and if the reason he's so secretive and aloof was because he murdered the original caretaker, learned all he can from the "missing" memoirs that went on extensively about botany and the cultivation of different berry trees and then destroyed them to cover up his act.
>>
>>94228507
This might cause my PC to finally spill the truth, in that he was a human isekai'd here, an ex Yukaza with connections to Nintendo, falling into the Yukaza life by first dabbling with the Hanafuda gambling racket and making his way to hijacking Nintendo gaming consoles in the 90s to price sculpting collectible merch from funkopops, figurines to rare pokemon cards. He had a huge interest in botany, bonsai tree planting and Ikebana floral arrangement and when made enough money to start his own florist business, he wanted to get out of the Yukaza life, even presented his boss a bonsai tree farewell gift, a Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult splinter cell hijacked the gift, tempered it by inserting an sarin bag within the bonsai tree that burst open killing the Yakuza boss. He was blamed and killed for it.
>>
>>94227630
I'm already like quadruple immortal, so that's fine.
>>
>>94228507
That is very interesting, I am not an expert on plants, I just have a relative that told me intersting facts about them all my life so I started learning stuff at random. I was not aware that natural grafting can happen but knowing how plant cells it kinda makes sense now, I did study that.

It's a cool way to start interactions, and it fits with the general vibe of your character, at least what it appears as. That would have to mean your character is pretty old, or just so unnoticeable that the town does not remember when he got there. The timeframe is a bit wonky but I can see it work.

>>94228551
This is a surprisigly complex backstory, still really cool. It explains the secrecy and general attitude, and it would fit well with the pot relic too. It's a solid idea, and leads to more questions too.

I was working on introducing the concept in my current writeup but Lushian can kinda "see" the isekai humans, Riolus have Aura powers, very weak and unstable but still there, since Lushian is Ghost type instead his power has more to do with souls, so he can tell when someone is from the human world. He does not know that yet as he would need some proof of comparison to comfirm it but it's getting there, so with Kombu confessing he would have one more piece of the puzzle. It would also lead credibility to Konbu's statement, if the fact that he is isekaied can be proven then the rest of his story is less likely to be a lie no matter how improbable. Technically Aura also acts as a lie detector in some cases, but even if it did it would be a Lucario thing.

I think we can make it work, it has enough space to include all sorts of other interactions too.
>>
>>94228780
That makes it even worse. You're now splattered chunks, but somehow still alive.
>>
>>94228827
>Riolus have Aura powers, very weak and unstable but still there, since Lushian is Ghost type instead his power has more to do with souls,

I can only gain powers based on things I have personally seen and recorded on my video equipment such as my Smartphone, Video Camera, surveillance gear, etc as physical media in the form of spiritual film reels/MicroSD Cards/etc. I can't use fictional material such as other people's movies/recordings to trigger my Fullbring.

Each instance of an ability creates a [Act] that I could replicate for a power via [Actors], for example if I copied Uryu's Bow Shot, I could replicate that attack by creating a holographic Uryu to replicate that attack as an [Actor]. However, I can only have 3 [ACTs] active at any time and any damage done to an Actor is reflected back to the recording medium which could destroy it and have me lose the power until I repair it or record another [ACT].
>3
While I can repair and copy my video files to other media, only the originals have power. For example, making a recording of Ichigo's Bankai ability makes 1 specific [ACT] media but copying the videos to other media just copies the video/audio but not the Spiritual Abilities recorded. If the original can't be repaired, then I have to hope I can record another instance of the power.

Afro-Japanese kid from New York whose parents moved back to Japan to help take care of his ailing Grandfather and finalizing the handover of the family trading company. While minorly spiritually aware before his incident, often using it to try to record ghosts for his MySpace Blog, he never thought he'd come across a real monster (Hollow) after it had fatally wounded a Fullbringer who was fighting it. After trying to resuscitate the man to no avail, he fully developed his Fullbring after he accidentally summoned a copy of the man using his new power to distract the Hollow enough for him to escape. Now he's trying to fit back into society while noticing even weirder stuff happening in the town such as even weirder ghosts, weird black yukatas with samurai swords, giant monsters, and all manners of madness. While his powers are growing because of him being constantly thrown into some action he can record on his camcorders, will he be able to completely survive this crazy Karakura Town?

I'm not trying to solo the universe, just survive and maybe get rich similar to Don Kamonji but with actual fights every once in a while. He's fine with people thinking it's fake but cool as long as he gets famous and hopefully make it into Hollywood for real. Otherwise, he acts like the straight man of the group who gets roped into the story and acts as 3rd Camera Narrator and power broker with his recordings. RPwise he's fine with training and improving his powers but he plays support in a way to not draw attention when he's recording everyone else for his blog or [ACT] Stockpile.

I wasn't sure if this one should be linked or >>94208307 but the second one doesn't have an image, so I opted for the first one for now.
>>
>>94229448
Why? Because of a lack of points or because of character interactions? You can always write something that is supposed to happen in the future and then people can fill in the gaps in time later. You can discuss your idea instead of giving up.
>>
>>94229596
I want to do a large scale expedition into a lower layer, but I feel something like that should be worked up to rather than be the first thing I write.

>>94229647
That's fair, if you feel like your character needs an intro to explain it better or some setup. I personally think that the expedition would be a very cool idea, mycharacter would want to participate as well, even if I would prefer having a slightly better moveset for a full scale expedition. Try writing a quick intro, maybe it will make you fell better, otherwise I don't think it's a bad idea to have an expedition now, we can fill in the gaps later as I said.

None of the current writefags are about the mysteries so you only count the mentions. Lushian and Sack have an artfag each too.

Sack was mentioned.
Jinchi had one interaction.

Quiet, secretive, aloof and reserved, Kombu rarely attempts to socialize or make friends with the other inhabitants of Relic Town and as a result always end up rubbing off the wrong way.

Kombu has an incredible knack for botany and gardening, figuring out how to graft apples, sitrus and leppa berry branches onto his body's outer kelp foliage to grow more of the fruits. He even managed to cultivate a steady supply of heal seeds.

He has began selling them, by leaving his produce on a little wooden stand in front of his little burrow of a home with a sign post list of prices and a jar to collect the proceeds. Relying on the honour system and the kindness of strangers to avoid social interaction.

Recently Kombu been hesitantly signed up with the explorer guild, in hopes of exploring delving deeper into the dungeons to find and study more of its anomalous and exotic flora.

Although Kombu's true intentions and goals remain a mystery, the residence of Relic town are begrudgingly willing to give him a wide berth with the hopes that he will open up to them eventually.

Manfred von Richthofen, once the feared Red Baron of the skies, vividly recalls the moment his plane was struck during a fierce dogfight. The sensation of plummeting towards the earth, the wind roaring in his ears, and the abrupt, violent impact are etched into his memory. Yet, instead of the cold embrace of death, he awoke to find himself transformed, his new form that of a peculiar avian creature with a sharp gaze and an even sharper set of feathers. Confusion quickly gave way to a haughty acceptance as he took to the skies, his aristocratic demeanour unshaken by the bizarre twist of fate.

As a Rowlet, Manfred retained his cocky, self-assured attitude, strutting through the world of Pokémon with the same confidence that once dominated the skies of Europe. His aristocratic upbringing and military background made him a natural leader, though his arrogance often rubbed others the wrong way. He revelled in the thrill of exploration and danger, finding the depths of the Abyss to be the perfect playground for his adrenaline-fueled exploits. The ever-changing, perilous environment of the dungeon was a challenge he eagerly embraced, each descent a new battle to conquer.

Manfred leads a rescue team known as the Flying Circus, a nod to his former squadron. True to its name, the team recruits only Pokémon capable of flight, each member handpicked for their aerial prowess. Under his command, the Flying Circus dives into the Abyss, navigating its treacherous strata with the precision and daring of a seasoned pilot. For Manfred, the Abyss is more than just a dungeon; it’s a new frontier to master, a place where he can once again soar to new heights, even if those heights are deep underground.

>turning the training options into a skill tree kind of system
Oh? Why didn't it work? Was it too restrictive with how you wanted the class/perks to function?
>it feels like I'm paying points for something I should just be able to get by myself
I've never had that feeling when a CYOA includes it like that. More so saw it as an opportunity cost and that regular companions do exist in the world that you could befriend, but they'd be more like 3 stars compared to in-CYOA 5 stars. Then again, I prefer when a CYOA goes more abstract when it isn't using companions to deliver extra world building or storylines. Going with at most a rough archetype and history so that I can fill the rest in my head.
>Weapon customization is a good example where guns flourish
It is, but also it can be a bit... mundane for one to consider. Even in the original draft, I was holding back on the customization to not overwhelm people unfamiliar with most of it. I've realized that people want to choose something cool, or at least flavorful, when it comes to CYOA options. Slight variations to a stock or grip doesn't excite the imagination as much as having a suppressor or skeleton key does.
>Gun based combat benefits from more environmental details
I do agree on that, especially when the environment can be changed or manipulated over time. Kicking down a table to hide from the enemy, only for said table to get blasted in half, etc. In a CYOA however, it's also a bit hard to make up gun skills that don't just boil down to aim good, CQC good, and maybe high noon good without taking away natural options in a gun fight. To take from your example, it may be a bit awkward to make taking cover an option as it implies that one can't take cover, or at least find appropriate cover, without the skill. Then it becomes a tax rather than a cool feature.

I've been reading up on the Goblin Slayer TRPG recently, so I wouldn't mind trying to help out with the dungeon crawl idea.

>Oh? Why didn't it work? Was it too restrictive with how you wanted the class/perks to function?
More that it ended up... lop-sided. My original draft for class training sought to condense similar options together. I.E. no need for a dozen versions of magic casting. I tried to take that and use it to make a skill tree. Basically the melee classes had a lot of overlap for their options, but mages didn't. Meanwhile the gish classes also introduced new mage-ly things more than new melee things.

>Going with at most a rough archetype and history so that I can fill the rest in my head.
I find that to be a better approach myself. I still don't love it, but it's easier for me to swallow.

>I've realized that people want to choose something cool, or at least flavorful, when it comes to CYOA options.
Yeah, not wrong there. It's still more than you can really do with melee though. Take swords for example- it pretty much just boils down to length and if it has one edge or two. The rest falls into the minutia most anons won't want to deal with. 9/10 times a sword is just a sword and there really isn't room for further customization.

>To take from your example, it may be a bit awkward to make taking cover an option as it implies that one can't take cover, or at least find appropriate cover, without the skill.
I mean, simply just taking cover is easy. Knowing how to analyze the situation and identify the best places to take cover, knowing the best angle to exit cover to attack from, what routes your enemies would take and how much time you have before you need to find new cover, counter-analyzing your opponents tactics to understand what they might be doing behind their cover, etc, etc. I figure a gunfighting skill based on taking cover would delve more into the deeper tactical side than the literal act of ducking behind a sturdy object.

>I wouldn't mind trying to help out with the dungeon crawl idea.
I'm always open to ideas, suggestions, requests, etc.

>Basically the melee classes had a lot of overlap for their options, but mages didn't
Ah, that's usually the problem when it comes to comparing something mundane and rigid with something pretty free form like magic. You could add in more martial power akin to wuxia where one can leap over mountains with their training, though that does mess with the Pathfinder base, I think?
>it pretty much just boils down to length and if it has one edge or two
Yes, but, although it is unfair to bring this up, melee weapons have a large variety to borrow from that extends its personalization compared to guns. Swords and glaves have a similar pointy bit, but just by the differences in their handle, they play very differently have very different mythos around them. Guns are still stuck within the realm of modernity that you can't even do fun stuff like add runes or enchantments. Of course, this is kind of devolving into weapon autism arguments based on what we know of our niche. It's fun and insightful, but we might be talking past some of each other's points.
>I figure a gunfighting skill based on taking cover would delve more into the deeper tactical side
That's true, though I also fear it may fall into the same situation as my original attempt. Every option has the added opportunity cost that implies that you're weak in something you didn't take from a player's perspective. Which can make options feel like taxes rather than specializations. It's a unique situation that comes from the mundane setting. At least in fantasy or sci-fi, it's more acceptable that a character can't fireball than a guy not knowing which is the best cover to take. It's possible with the right description, but it would also depend on how one interprets not taking the choice to mean.
>I'm always open to ideas, suggestions, requests, etc
Kind of hard to do when I can't recall much of the contents. Any specific thing you're stuck on? Maybe we could talk about the overall tone that you're aiming for?
>>

>You could add in more martial power akin to wuxia where one can leap over mountains with their training, though that does mess with the Pathfinder base, I think?
I mean, leaping over mountains certainly isn't happening, but power level issues aside I do think adding new things to compensate is a valid strategy. Mostly I just think I need to start that section from scratch if I want to pursue the skill tree idea.

>It's fun and insightful, but we might be talking past some of each other's points.
Probably not wrong. I could point out that modern magic settings with magic guns are hardly rare, and the glaive VS sword thing is applicable to something like a pistol VS a sawed off shot-gun... But at this stage I'm losing track of the point I was trying to make.

>It's a unique situation that comes from the mundane setting.
Yeah, I can't really deny that.

>Kind of hard to do when I can't recall much of the contents.
I'd offer to throw the rentry at you since I don't mind people peeking at my rentry's, but it's currently more like personal notes than something meant to make sense to other people.

>Maybe we could talk about the overall tone that you're aiming for?
Hmm... Well it's a bit on the grim side. The setting takes place in a sort of magically walled off zone. Think sort of like those fey wards where you walk into it, get turned around, and find yourself walking out the way you came, except it only happens to things trying to leave the region. The zone exists to seal away an evil deity who jobbed during a divine war, but simply by being sealed there the deity affects the region, spawning monsters, empowering them, and corrupting humans into monsters as well. The region itself is more or less a ruined city-state and the lands around it.

People that found their way inside gradually built up their own small city, with people also being born in that city. Average life expectancy is ~30s though, so orphaned teens are common.

>>94241681
>Mostly I just think I need to start that section from scratch if I want to pursue the skill tree idea
If you're going to start from scratch anyway, the question then becomes: "what would be the advantage of using a skill tree?" I recall previously that it was free-form earlier in concept to encourage class mixing, or making your own class. Why the change to a skill tree to begin with?
>I'm losing track of the point I was trying to make
Something about which niche (xianxia or modern military) had more appeal as a setting, which kind of delved into our frustrations from how troublesome our niches as a topic of a CYOA can be to work with.
>but it's currently more like personal notes
Might be worth the shot. What's there to lose?
>The setting takes place in a sort of magically walled off zone
I think I recall something about how the world above is sealed off, but sunlight still passes through? I also recall that you can choose between your character growing up in the dungeon or finding their way there, where the former are more powerful but more prone to corruption? Wasn't the sealed god one of the mysteries to be discovered by the players? How does the corruption work in the CYOA? Something that might be interesting is how does fatigue, or going deeper into the dungeon affect explorers? What happens if you stay away from the city for too long, or why isn't the civilization more spread out through the different strata?

This could be fluff answers, or more crunch-based answers, though it seems the crunch part is too far away for any solid conclusions right now.

>Why the change to a skill tree to begin with?
No real reason beyond "because I wanted to try it". Thus why I said it didn't really work out. I didn't have enough justification to scrap what I already had.

>which kind of delved into our frustrations from how troublesome our niches as a topic of a CYOA can be to work with.
Ah, yeah, fair enough.

>Might be worth the shot. What's there to lose?
Roger. https://rentry.org/TotallyNotPathfinder

>I think I recall something about how the world above is sealed off, but sunlight still passes through?
I think that was more a misunderstanding I failed to clear up. There are dungeons in the region, but the region is not inherently underground. Or at least it wasn't intended to be at any phase of development. I'm open to making a change if there's a good argument in favor of a subterranean setting.

>I also recall that you can choose between your character growing up in the dungeon or finding their way there
Yeah, although I don't think I ever settled on an significant difference between the two.

>Wasn't the sealed god one of the mysteries to be discovered by the players?
It's certainly on the table, yeah. Whether you act for it or against it, it's one possible path to freedom. It's the sort of detail that'd be left open for the players though.

>How does the corruption work in the CYOA?
At present, it's like a disease with semi-random symptoms. Early stages are physical (scales, horns). Later stages are mental (strange dreams, hallucinations). At the end it reaches your soul and you stop being 'you'.

>Why isn't the civilization more spread out through the different strata?
Granted there isn't strata to explore, but the answer is that even after pooling all of their manpower, making and protecting a single small city is still very hard. If they continued to grow and develop for long enough they'd be able to afford splitting off into other settlements.

Also word count.

>>94241774
>Something that might be interesting is how does fatigue, or going deeper into the dungeon affect explorers?
There is an aspect of it with corruption. The sealed god's presence isn't uniformly spread out. It tends to concentrate more in some places than others, making those spots more hostile to people while also making them nests for even stronger monsters. Humans have managed to devise some ways to defend themselves against said corruption, but it's not something they can do on a large scale (so no making the city corruption free, for example). Making a small group of elites able to going into an area where the corruption is thick is doable however, and the city also has a sort of military nobility system where said nobles can afford to protect themselves on a more regular basis (that way they have a longer average life expectancy).

Said anti-corruption method will likely be some sort of trinket, like a badge or amulet. Either way, the TL;DR is that exploration isn't too bad in most places, but going into important places puts you on a time limit where you need to leave before your trinket stops working... Or at least that's the current plan. As with all things in a WIP, it's subject to change.
>>
>>94241774
Oh, right, I think I left out a somewhat key detail with the civilization thing. The city and the people in it don't have a single continuous line going back to when the region first got sealed. Most of the time, people that ventured in died off long before enough could group together to form anything resembling a village. Other times they managed to build up a city but later got wiped out for one reason or another (maybe they caught the eye of a dragon, maybe the old lich that owns the big ruined city decided to go to war, or maybe the leadership of the city simply got corrupted and orchestrated the city's downfall. etc). The seal is something on the order of a couple thousand years old, but the city the setting takes place in is only around a century old, maybe a bit more than that.

I.E. humanity (and other player character races) have gotten exterminated and their cities destroyed several times before this one was founded.
