Campfire discussions are a good time for character development and RP. It's best not to gloss over these scenes.
>"Man that fight was tough.">"Yep."Thrilling.
>>94250997>my character went to sleep an irl hour ago>they're still fucking circlejerking about their daddy issuesholy fuck just MOVE ON ALREADY
Only if there's been some meaningful development that they actively want to discuss. Otherwise, it's going to be understandably awkward.
>>94250997Why dont you give us some examples of interesting RP scenes you witnessed in these campfire discussions?
Or you could use literally any part of the game where your characters are together (usually almost all of it) for them to have a conversation.
>>94250997Deciding the actions of someone who isn't oneself is also a good time for roleplay, and in the context of a game, it's best done through the challenges outlined by the game, instead of some improv theater kid session that has as much to do with the game itself as a conversation in passing about it.
>>94250997I make my players pass-several minutes in-character around the campfire to unlock a timeskip/fast-travel. It's very cozy.
>>94250997They'll just fuck. It keeps happening.

>>94251195>>94251066Hey man BG3 has a lot of campfire dialogue
I find the breakfast table is the best place to initiate in character discussions. Mostly because there is usually a moment after the rest / downtime during which things might have happened you want to share/discuss with the party. Like if your downtime activity or some ability was related to gathering some information or something. Also there is usually a brief moment of ”what is he plan today?” so discussion needs to be had amyway.

>>94250997in my last campaign these moments were just so comfy and memorable>elf wizard convincing human cleric to drink together with some dwarves they met on the road>tiefling druid and human bard playing cards>elf ranger practicing his woodworking skills>kobold warlock sending his familiar to explore around, getting involved in creepy shit and not telling the rest of the party
>>94251217Joke's on you, spammer faggot. My old man character telling the rest of the party boring stories about how he was in the war and it fucked him up real bad literally makes them better mechanically.
>>94251217games are something you do for funtrying to skip something fun that players enjoy in order to get to a different fun that players also enjoy is a bit odd.

>>94250997Assuming you are not the no-games poster. Do you have any suggestions for such events to be more immersive, possible mechanics or the right time and place to have these moments?
>>94251747That's a good tip. I find it's best to give some guidance while still leaving it open. Gives the players something to react to and pick their own level of engagement. "What are you doing while everyone's setting up for camp?" Can get me>"I spark up a cigarette and chill on a log">"I want to take player X aside and ask them about that weird NPC we met">"I take time to brew a poison and apply it to some arrows"For my group having that little bit of context makes a big difference.
>>94250997I'm not there for drama club theatrics. I'm not writing a book, I'm playing a game.

>>94259401>Campfire discussions always involves talking about your feelings You sound like a faggot.
>>94259431Cope, theater faggot
>>94259393>theyIt's one guy. If there's a reply in a thread about roleplaying or doing in-character stuff that includes the phrase "roleplaying is making decisions for a character" and decries actually speaking in-character, it's the same guy every time. This is the new meta for forcing discussion of TTRPGs off of /tg/, by claiming that engaging with anything other than the mechanical layer of a game somehow isn't part of RPGs, and with the less-than-subtle implication that anything else is part of some kind of hostile invasion to hide the fact that he's the newcomer who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.
>>94251337>Girl>hkd
>>94259520Not any of those anons. I certainly have advised in the past, still do now and play by expressing the general points and tones of a dialogue with regularity. Saves me having to do voices and speaking in character for every NPC. Having a bit of direct character voice helps at first to establish them in player memory, maybe a phrasethat can be brought up later, but overall using it as a limited tool rather than a specific entertainment or therapeutic requirement.
>>94250997They're also a way to pretty much discuss and adjust expectations for the game while in the game, without having to dedicate extra time for it.And a way to give the DM a break.
>>94259520What is it with you people and always thinking there's some grand conspiracy about everything? What the fuck would anyone gain by "forcing discussion of TTRPGs off of /tg/"?
>>94259393>People ask OP a question>OP doesn't answerBut why?
If any of you roleplay nerds wonder why people don't like the idea of roleplaying its because they are jaded. People who love roleplay either make retarded "it's what my character would do!" decisions that harm the entire party or just bog down the entire game doing theatrics and hogging the spotlight. There is a time and place for such things to happen but those kinds of people have no idea when to restrain themselves and often fail to bring a positive outcome for every negative outcome they cause. you would already know this if you hard any self awareness, so you are probably the person described above if you are complaining about people hating roleplay
>>94259688Nta but this does look like a single obsessed autist:>>94259366>>94259358>>94259354>>94259344>>94259340
>>94259688Not a conspiracy, but /tg/ being a relatively-slow and small board has resulted in it being vulnerable to astroturfed forced memes propagated by single individuals just because the number of active threads at any one time is small and those threads tend to stick around for longer than on other boards. "Freakshit" is an example of this somewhat succeeding by capitalizing on a grumble that a small percentage of anons have had with Pathfinder and D&D; "storyshitting" is an example of this failing by being too transparent. You'll notice that what both of these equally-shitty forced memes have in common is attempting to narrow the range of what it appears to be acceptable to discuss on /tg/. This isn't necessarily a concerted, coordinated effort, and more likely reflects a trend of the kind of person who does this sort of thing. What all of these have in common with "making decisions for a character" guy's specific brand of retardation is that they all push the same theme: There is a specific, narrow range of acceptable ways to discuss tabletop RPGs that conveniently excludes the majority of tabletop RPGs, and only includes things a small group of nogames retards can turn into thinly-veiled culture war shitposting. Don't like things. Don't have fun. Just be mad at [current day thing] and LARP as a grog and hate everyone different from what some retard thinks "old-school" RPG players are like. Anything else is cringe and reddit.
>>94259520>knowing what words mean is a conspiracy to kill TTRPG discussionThis is the most retarded thing I've read all year.
>>94260121>dunnoh how about you? >you missed the general >be specific >nogames >grogs, chuds, trannys
>>94260253You've read your own words, so that can't be true

>>94260616True, but only one of them seems not to understand that games about things other than crawling through a dank hole and stabbing men even exist.
>>94260782You can try and get one to be friends with you if you want anon. They're both clearly retarded.
What are some fun convos you've had?
True. Always good to have some white noise while you look through your notes.
>>94258062it actually has pretty good dialogue
>>94256943if you're travelling hex's around a map and days are passing by in real time seconds, it's not worth the time.i think at the end of the day it makes more sense for it to be initiated by players if they ever want to say something, and if you want to force it you could have maybe npcs try to initiate conversation.
>>94250997Depends on the game. Which one are you talking about?
>>94251066>Announces his character isn't going to remain with the party to RP and converse.>Is surprised and upset that the party continues to RP and converse without his character.Anon, you are the red flag.
>>94251008>that church was in slovenly condition, I would never have let my own get so foul>ya think that weird key hermit would pay for these widgets from the dungeon?>I'm just saying, I think alchemists have been accumulating too much influence for what they can actually offer...If your character can't find anything to make small talk about then RPGs might not be for you.
>>94250997They're also great times for ambushes. That scene in the movie Alpha where the group gets attacked by a sabretooth cat that snatches the one kid and they have to listen to him die in the dark beyond the light reach of their fire was nightmare fuel.
>>94260121This board is definitely vulnerable to people forcing Milhouse-tier memes. Woyafag is another example. I think it has its roots in (literal) autism. The motive is that some posters cannot conceive of people liking other things.
>>94266016Woah is that gif real
>>94266508The motive is the empty hope that you'll work on your art.

>>94250997I regularly poke my players and ask them if they want to have casual in-character discussions but usually they don't. When they do though, it's pretty good.
>>94250997I usually keep stuff like campfire asides for between sessions. They're fun, but it can drag on for other players if not everyone is involved and I don't want to seriously delay the game for everyone just cause I like to chew scenery.
>>94250997In my experience players never do any kind of meaningful RP during "downtime". Majority of people aren't in their characters heads so much to actually be emotionally connected to other PCs.It always typically occurs in between scenes where there's some kind of trigger or prompt
>>94269384Most of the players I've played with have done it very well. It's probably that your gaming group aren't stellar roleplayers.
>>94250997... if your players are into this sort of thing.Daily reminder than all those "X things your game MUST have" lists are retarded if they don't include to each and every of their points "if your players are into this kind of thing" disclaimer.

It seems the majority really has misinterpreted the word "roleplaying" by 2024.Your role is fighter, or cleric, or elf or whatever. That word just means that you are "playing" a singular "role" in the campaign, rather than directing the actions of multiple entire units of an army in a wargame. That was a novel concept when dungeons and dragons was adapted from wargame rules and presented to a wargaming audience. Nothing else is implied by the word "roleplaying."You can pause the game to read your friends the five page poem that you prepared for the occasion. Nobody outside that room can stop you. But it isn't mandatory either.

>>94272977>2024Even that one audio with the guy using magic missile "attacking the darkness" had an a roleplaying segment. Which started as awkwardly as the "meet in the tavern" and campfire convos often do.
