How would you structure a campaign set in ruined Metru-Nui?
>HERE I AM>I AM LOST IN YOUR LAND>AND I HOPE YOU WILL BE>CREEPING IN MY SOUL>SHADOWS FALL, LET ME OUT>HEAR MY CALL>AND I'LL ALWAYS BELIEVE>CREEPING IN MY SOUL
I want to play a Southern Continent game
>>94315517Shamelessly steal from zombie apocalypse stories. Because that's basically what it is.
>>94315517What system would be best? I know that there's a couple Bionicle systems out there, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each one?
>>94318772No one's buying it, LL
>>94316515Why specifically the Southern continent?
>>94315517I would love to but there's a guy in my group that has an anxiety attack if he has to play a character that can't get laid.
>>94322214
>>94322214Glatorian and Agori canonically reproduce by steamy hot sex. Not necessarily together, but we all know Berix was totally down for some Kiina-domme.
>>94315517Red Star Games is making or made a Bionicle TTRPG.
>>94315517Depends on whether the PCs are Toa, matoran, or what. But I'd set up a map of the island, give them an objective (push back the Visorak hordes, or just escape with as many survivors as possible in hope that there's something else out there beyond the sea), put a lot of Visorak, dangerous terrain, Dark Hunters and moral quandaries in between them and their goal. Make those obstacles just a little too hard for them to always be able to tackle head on. Make them need help. Maybe they get help from Matoran, maybe they go on a big perilous dungeon delve to dig up something from the Archives that can help, maybe they get tempted by power or even turn to the Dark Hunters for help in a time of great need. I think there's a lotta potential there.>>94315876I can hear it, dammit.>>94318772I tried to brew one up, it got posted here, but I think it was pretty uninspiring honestly. There's the Red Star Games one based on 3.5e which is an impressive amount of work but wouldn't be my pick for a Bionicle game. I think there's also a Genesys fan splat for it, which I haven't read but I have played Genesys. It's a good system that suits Bionicle well, but it has a Savage Worlds-like action hero level of power and PC near-immortality that I don't think suits this kind of campaign. I honestly might use Freeform Universal or something super simple like that, though part of me still wants to take another crack at my own Bonk system.
>>94326999Well, if you still have the link, maybe we can try and improve that Bionicle RPG of yours? I'm sure it's better than you're implying! Why wouldn't the Red Star Games system be your pick for a Bionicle game, BTW?
Thought: I think if Lego tries another stab at reviving Bionicle, they should go for three elements instead of six. The need to produce twelve canister sets a year to cover two waves for the six elements was always a yoke around bionicle's neck. Also that video game looks decent.
>>94318772bumpy boy lives!
>>94315517I wouldn't, everything past Mask of Light is non-canon to my setting.
>>94328242They seemed to manage fine all the way into HF's run. Quantity wasn't the problem. Although it might be now, with the weird focus on fewer-but-bigger-sets for collectors>>94327293Shut. The fuck. Up.
This thread is going nowhere, but it made me think- I'd like to gather up all the Bionicle TTRPGs out there, for posterity if nothing else. So far I have my old one (1d6 based, very lite, random chargen) Doronai Nui (3.5e OGL one from RSG), Lost Chronicles (WFRP-ish), Masks of Destiny (somewhat crunchy, looks to be an original system), Bionicle: The New Legends (5e heartbreaker), and fan splats for Genesys and Savage Worlds. Anyone have or know of any others?
>>94330080Do you have any links to these, especially the last two, please?
>>94330251Both of those I found on reddit somewhere. I threw what I have so far, including those, in a mega: slash folder slash qQIGiYqC pound YkAyZUNF2xbLY0jjkj8phw
>>94328877Including the Great Spirit Robot?
>>94330611Not him but allegedly "The universe is Mata Nui's body" was the plan from day 1. Apparently the guy who set out the original plan was inspired by a tumor he had, and how his cells might have interpreted the contest between a body(great spirit) and a tumor(makuta)
>>94315517You gotta use Bionicles in place of traditional character minis. So the scale will have to be taken into consideration.
>>94334692Scenery and table size would be unreasonable in that case, desu. Finding the right minis to use would be a struggle there, though.
>>94315517Whats system are you using?
>>94334709How about just masks as tokens in place of minis?
>>94335481Y'know what, that's actually a fantastic concept. Great idea, actually
>>94330080There's Legends of Okoto, which is IMO the best thing to come out of G2 (aside from the actual sets). The bestiary is excellent, really fleshing out the sorely lacking world building. There's also the PbtA one for G2 made by the same people who did doronai nui. I can't remember the name though. It didn't seem particularly inspired.
>>94336216Thanks. G2 was after my time but that's still very interesting; sadly it looks like Legends of Okoto was hosted on google drive and the creator has privated it. You wouldn't happen to have a copy, would you?
>>94336472You're in luck
>>94336472>>94336666And the lorebook.
>>94336666>>94336676Huge. Thanks anon.
>>94315517If you could change anything about the Bionicle setting, what would it be? I’d make it so that the Rahi can reproduce, along with select sapient biomechanical races, having the Makuta manually make each individual Rahi makes no sense for a number of reasons.
>>94315517What would your preferred element be and why? It’s Psionics for me, I’m a sucker for mental abilities.
>>94337837>>94338261Bumpfag it saddens me that you're into Bionicle. Fuck you. Saged.
>>94328242What elements would you have them choose then?
>>94337837>monsters made through natural reproduction is cool>way cooler than the big bad handcrafting each monster like a Power Rangers villain
>>94339891They also did it over 100k years, so it’s not that much of a stretch. It’s like model army painting, it was their hobby
>>94339891>>94340615I dunno. It sort of falls apart when some of the wildlife the villains made is just things like birds and fish that isn't particularly dangerous in any way. Some of them even just end up as beasts of burden.Who's out there handcrafting thousands of identical fish and goats?
>>94341659They probably made them in batches, like shadow leeches. If I were recall correctly they're all made from "viruses", so probably similar fundamental processAlso don't underestimate the power of autism
>>94326853Came here to say this, but has anybody actually played the Red Star Bionicle TTRPG game and is able to give it a rating on how fun it is?
>>94343709Haven't been able to wrangle a group for it, but far as I can tell, if you liked 3.5, you'll like it.
>>94342117Still, the numbers don't add up. Take these guys, who are insectivores, the Makuta would have to basically work non-stop to make enough prey insects for them to eat on a regular basis. And that's just 'one' species.
>>94318772west end d6
>>94334709Sounds like a you problem. Just rent out a basketball court like a real gamer.
>>94338261stone and earth being distinct things is still fucking stupid.
>>94345375Imagine getting in a tizzy over that and not light+fire. You're just bigoted against blacks.
>>94345214Yeah, I can understand being meticulous about the predators that pose an actual threat, but just having the fish and small insects or other prey species breed automatically just makes sure all of their pet projects function actually sustain themselves
>>94345375Yeah, not sure why they ended up doing that. And don't forget Sand is an Element on Bara Magna that the Great Beings didn't end up including in the MU.>>94345223Okay, why that one?
>>94347724Exactly. Not to mention how with only one Makuta left most Rahi would quickly go extinct before to long if they couldn't breed, though for some breeds, like the Doom Viper, and the other creations of Makuta Chirox, I don't think that most Matoran would mind that, lol.
>>94337837But the Rahi are literally robots.
>>94353999The MU inhabitants are explicitly biomechanical unless stated otherwise, which means they have both mechanical 'and' organic components (granted the latter are mostly internal, namely muscles and organs, and protected by the former).
>>94315517I don't know bumbfag-kun. How would you run a game? Have you ever ran a game?
>>94345375I think that they were just padding the numbers. What do you think of Ice and Water being separate though?
>>94341659>Who's out there handcrafting thousands of identical fish and goats?
>>94359862If you're wondering who made most of the really dangerous predators, like the Doom Vipers or Catapult Scorpions, it was this guy. Rahi being able to breed would certainly explain how his creations continue to proliferate, since it's not like he would have made many after the first batches turned out as disasters.
Secret tip: Horizon Zero Dawn is for all intents and purposes a Bionicle game>In a time after time>You are a hero from one of several elementally associated tribes in a mysterious land with a hidden past>The biomechanical creatures of this land are plagued by a red and black corruption that makes them hostile>Nature and machinery mingle together in this ruined world, where average tribesmen and powerful heroes have to work together to stop the corruption
>>94338261If I were in charge of a reboot I'd go for three basic elements>Fire>Earth>WaterAll other elements fall in either the umbrella of one of these or the combination between them. This leaves plenty of opportunity for creativity and new color schemes down the line.
>had a dozen Bionicles >no idea there was autistic lore and a whole setting >just played with them as robots
>>94362722Yeah, why did Chirox keep trying if all his creations turned out as failures that contributed nothing useful to the ecosystem?
>>94359825ice and water makes sense thematicly at least. ice is really cold shit and water is wet shit. you get that difference immediatelyStone and earth are largely synonyms however. In setting it seems like stone is talking about surface minerals while earth is more underground minerals, but even then, I think sand does a better job communicating that then stone.
>>94363815Were you a certified retard? You never went to bionicle.com during computer time?
>>94350814>Okay, why that one?Its good for simple in concept but if you want a few specific flares kind of pulp adventures. where it isnt just basic bitch lite games like apocolypse system, but it also isnt full on gurps suplement where you got to really invest yourself. Distribute your stats and get like 2-3 special traits to give your character unique fluff and mechanics and just go. like a trait for being a toa, a trait for your element and a skill for the character's specific disposition.
>>94315517I’d rather do a campaign that takes place after the point that Lego abandoned the Bionicle G1 story. Never understood why they did that. What would you do for such a campaign? For me, finding a way to deal with a certain Toa-killing robot would be the main goal.
I honestly wonder how the hell Bionicle society functioned so well for so long when every person who is evil and every animal who is evil can easily stomp anyone non evil in their way unless its a Toa and whatever the other forms are called.
>>94368259I mean, its kinda explained. In the start Matoran where essentially micro organisms regulating the macro organism that was Mata nui, Toa are like white blood cells specifcally made to deal with physical threats.Post mata nui sleeping, Matoran where often victim's and slaves to more powerful entities. Sometimes they could band together to defend themselves somewhat, especially from non sapients.
>>94368313Why weren't the Toa better at protecting the Matoran during this period?
>>94370290They were stuck in canisters floating in the ocean
>>94363371>sun, shadow, ice.. Machine? Mothers? I can kinda see it>everyone's wearing mask-ish headgear made of machine parts, especially the turaga- er I mean shaman>the gods are actually giant robots/ai/factoriesI can see the resemblance>>94367614Access to a computer wasn't a given during the early millennium. There were more people offline than online.>>94368259There used to be a lot more toa teams before various wars (and targeted assassinations) picked them off.>94368111Stfu
>>94315517You first. Be detailed and specific.
>>94371578yah, if you lived in the third world. We all had lab time either at school or after school.
>>94371211There were others besides those six.
>>94370290Far as I'm aware, a lot of them were dead or became the monsters causing trouble.
>>94376281Not everyone was spoddy enough to use it for browsing the web though.
>>94377494>or became the monsters causing trouble. How's that now?
>>94315517That's going to be part of what happens in the game I'm set to run once my Star Wars game wraps up. once the party goes from Matoran to Toa, they'll be sent in to help deal with the Civil War aka the Matoran Race War.
>>94383142>aka the Matoran Race War.Did Lego really have a race war in one of its settings?
>>94384817>>94379819Oh my god, shut the fuck up
>>94384817No, it was just a civil war, but it did have major effects on the setting going forward.
>>94322214Only Toa and Matoran are asexual due to mainly being robots, the other species on the planet reproduce sexually. Not to mention the other planet.
>>94388573Or G2 is you prefer it.
>>94388541It was for all intents and purposes a race war because it was between different colors of matoran.
>>94395554According to the wiki, it was a trade dispute between Po-Metru and Ta-Metru that snowballed.
>>94397515Interesting, what are some other potential sources on conflict in the setting that might make for interesting roleplaying hooks? Obviously there's the trade dispute between Po-Metru and Ta-Metru, but what else could we use?
>>94399424Did ChatGPT write this post?
>>94399885Did you forget to take your pills today, Anon?
>>94399424If you're actually interested, there's the League of Six Kingdoms led by the Barraki, who were created to maintain order in the MU, only to seek to conquer it from Mata Nui. They failed and were stopped by the Makuta, but they inadvertently gave Teridax the idea to overthrow Mata Nui himself... Their era would be full of conflicts to insert PCs in.
>>94399885Stop noticing things!
>>94402480Do you not know what a colloquialism is? I'll put it bluntly for you: your awkward, stilted filler posts that do little more than repackage someone else's post into a bland, empty question reads like an early 00's chatbot trying to fake a conversation. To call your posts drafted by chatGPT actually does a massive disservice to just how far along chatbots have come. In fact, I strongly believe chatGPT would pass the Turing Test before you.
>>94397515A trade dispute got that bad? How?
Which system has the best take on the Barraki?
>>94409040Go fuck yourself
>>94397515Yeah, snowballed into a race war.
