Painted a rather easy mini today and I gotta say, I had way more fun than painting one with lots of little intricate details. Call it cope, but I think I prefer nice, easy, quick minis to paint, it's way more satisfying and calming.I tried to give his robot eye a very bright, vibrant green, but it didn't work out too well. I guess just putting the color there is not enough. Any tips for giving it that "green night vision goggles" look?
gonna try oil washing this one tomorrow
Another terrain bit hacked and sanded out. The flat side of the hill will have a rock facing. Probably just gonna texture it and dry brush the results.
>>94374484>the instruction manual ideaActually not bad
Is this what reactivation looks like? I can't figure out these speedpaints
>>94375301That bald spot on your spoon happened to my model just now. Spend 3 hours airbrushing. Let it dry overnight. Apply a very thin agrax wash. My airbrush job starts peeling. All paints used GW. I had to go back and spend another 2 hours fixing it by hand in such a way that it matched the airbrush job surrounding it, then carefully reapply the wash to that area only, again matching the surrounding, then varnish it just to make sure, a step I usually leave to the very end with Vallejo paints. GW, never again.

>>94375320This was over vallejo model silver, some vallejo gloss and then a small wash, I don't know if it's something I'm doing with the speedpaint 2.0 or if this silver has a weird peeling issue because it peeled quickly off my skin when I was washing which I thought might be weirdMaybe it needs to dry more? I have no idea. It started to happen on another test spoon when the contrast paint started mucking up and I tried going back over it, I just reapplied the metals back over it and glossed and put it down for the day
>>94375301v1 or 2.0?first version reactivates, either mix them 1:1 with contrast medium, learn to live with it or trash them2.0 should not reactivate
>>94375347Can’t find it.Anyone know? It would be perfect for my post apoc space game
>>94375349it's because of varying hardness, the gloss finish is a lot harder than the speedpaint when it dries, so any friction will rub off the speedpaint first.
>>943753822.0, mainly starts when going over itselfMaybe it had a bad reaction with the wash? I'll try again later
>people unironically talking about sequels to a paint colorMaybe paint some things instead of inventing complexity.
>>94374771Thanks man. I've been telling myself "I'll drill the barrels later" for 14 years and 6+ armies now. Here's another pic.
Tidying up the wash after it dries, a tad enthusiastic with it in, in hindsight, poor lighting. I do like the silver look as opposed to black. So thanks to the anon who recommended it. After tidying it up going to glue them in and then satin varnish it (shoulda probs done that before the wash, but I'm still learning, wash on other parts will be done after the varnish). Going to leave the arms of as the way they attach makes getting to certain parts near impossible, same for the shield and the boosterpacks (which attach to the arms anyway)
>>94375414This, BTW, also applies to a lot of paints applied over metallics. Metallics tend to be hard and, on a microscopic level, coarse once dry (makes sense if you think about it, essentially just metal particles in paint, it isn't like it is being forged or anything). So if you apply paint over that, that top layer will peel of pretty easily if you just slap a wash on it afterwardsw ithoit being really gentle. You have sandwiched your paint between metallic on one side and a sticky wash on the other which your are "rubbing" on. That paint is just going to come of like it's nobody's business. Either varnish first or be extremely gentle with your wash application.
>>94375301Which paints this happens to? Only AP speedpaints or other brands like vallejo xpresscolors?I mean, technically all paints reactivate but some like AK and Atom are very sturdy to the point that they don't reactivate after an overnight soak.
>>94374751Holy agrax earthshade
>>94374577I love painting but sometimes it's hard to get it going. Generally because of some bottleneck like having to prime or setup the airbrushing station.
>>94375620Didn't you say last thread this one of your first GW models? Kudos on the neat technique/seperation of the varnished(?) feet and the rest of the leg, that ain't easy.Have you done a gunpla/historical in the past? Because going for metallic "realistic" look is something I'd expect from them more than from us typical GW mini painters (primarily because doing an entire army in this style would be a nightmare, 2k points worth of minis masked so you can have it part gloss part non-gloss is just a hard pass for most).
>>94375652Is gloss varnish best or something like satin so it grips?>>94375673AP speedpaints 2.0, though I didn't wait very long before the second coat
>>94373802>some guy gifted 60% of a Thousand Sons army last yearFancy.
>>94375620I'm curious to see how these silver parts look on a finished Farsight.
>>94375673This >>94375620 is me using GW air ageron red (spelling? I usually work with RAL designations) over AK aluminium. I applied about 10 layers of the red with an airbrush (2:1 paint:medium). Hour dry between layer, followed by 24 hour dry.I then retouched the aluminium on the leg overspray, let that dry several hours. Then I went in with agrax/nuln mix wash on the metal (the one I overdid and want to tone down), that was nicked the round "joint/ankle) on the bottom leg and to my dismay it basically instantly stripped it down to the AK metal. I very carefully had to dry it and apply the red again by hand (you can see it doesn't look as neat as the top leg one). Kinda had to do what >>94375320 described. >>94375706I'm new to GW yes, and yes came from doing historicals, although I wouldn't call myself a veteran at that. Half a dozen tanks, some auxiliary vehicles, a diorama or two and two planes (all WW2). No varnish as of yet, the red just does that when applied over the AK metallic. Though after the peeling I am going to varnish before continuing. Despite it not being the hue of red I was aiming for, I still like it and its effect a lot, and it was a bit of work, so I don't want it coming of everywhere that I decide to work on the model, as I do want to apply some panel lining, some small highlights and the white stripe tau patterns.
>>94374315Bootleg tcg cards. The shittier the chinglese translation the better.
>>94375620The historical crowd are something else. Don't get me wrong, eavy metal looks cool and takes a lot of skill, but it ultimately follows an easy enough "algorithm", again, bot tryibg to downplay skill to do it justice, but the historical crowd come up with all sort of shit to get their details "just right". They are also more daring (for lack of a better word), I have seen them intentionally apply diluted glue to tank panels to roughen the texture like cast steel, like, you get that wrong and your model is now a puddle of plastic at worst or is morphed beyond repair at best. That being said, it doesn't, imo, work for army building, it just takes too fucking long. I can build and paint at least an entire patrol in the time it takes the historicals to build a kit.
>>94375787Nta, but with that shade of red and that metal, it's going to look like mr farsight has traded the greater good for the machine spirit.

>>94375917I kinda like it, but then I don't really like how a lot of T'au gets painted to look like toy plastic soldiers. >>94375998I recognized the sword and fist and felt like being a dickPrints look clean tho
>>94376046no problem Anon! I just started painting 40k, and I couldn't tell a necron from a tyranid.I printed them with an SLA, the quality of detail is very high but the direction in which I print them also matters, here for example I have some annoying layering that I hope to be able to cover with the other layers in addition to the blue base coat
>>94376071>that I hope to be able to cover with the other layers in addition to the blue base coaDon't bet on that. Those lines will show up even after you paint it, with primer and all. You can apply some sort of putty on the surface and then file it down but you will lose detail. You need to figure a way of minimizing print/voxel lines. Either by lowering layer height or using AA.
>>94375947Iwata eclipse gravity cupped. It is quite obviously better made (which is why the trigger is less jiggly), but it doesn't do a better job. I use .3 for basically everything, anything that requires more detail is brushwork, anything that requires less detail is usually larger (and cheaper) stuff like terrain which is getting a rattlecanned or plantmister applied to it. On the noncheap large stuff I'll swap out the needle, sometimes I do canvas stuff for fun and do want finer detail and will swap out for that too. Otherwise .3 all the way.Clogging is going to be a "skillissue" that I don't believe is going to be helped by a different brush (barring some really dodgy design that is trapping paint in the nozzle in a way that it clogs no matter what). I run cleaner through my brush before and after every use. I run thinner through the brush before use (kinda like lubing up the brush in a way). Thin the paint down to cream (why people say milk is beyond me) with water 3-2:1:1 paint:water:thinner/flow improver depending on paint used. 25-30psi and away we go. I try to never pull back the trigger without air flowing, you're just introducing paint down to the nozzle which is going to splatter the moment you DO introduce the airflow and/or dry and clog up your shit (basically you don't want excess paint going out of the cup unless it is being blasted out the business end). My chinesiums do that just fine and I regret getting the expensive option that adds essentially nothing, could have gotten myself two killteams and corresponding paints instead, would have been a much better buy.Maybe if you are doing some extremely detailed fine art work you'll notice a difference, but that's not what I (or nearly everyone else) do on my minis.
>>94376107thanks for the precious advice! you're right, the primer has not already covered it , so it is difficult for the paint to do so. since I will already have to print other things, given that it will be a display model, I will take this opportunity to follow your instructions
>>94376071Sand it down and enjoy your free moob enlargement.
First time painting with citadel paintsFor their trios of paints, do they all lean warmer for the highlights? Or do they step up neutrally?Im trying to paint moonlighted space marines and i wonder if i can mix them with a bluish white for the highlightIm using Incubi darkness, kabalite green, guassblaster green
>>94376147Citadel comes in triads? I always thought it was just sloppa. I wouldnt know, I don't touch their base/layer stuff.
>>94376154How about the trios for army painter? Do they go warmer? Any saturation changes?
>>94375932I got the unpainted dwarf paladin. Figured I clean up bits of mold lines on primed minis pretty often so it wouldn't be that bad but it's really not scraping well at all.>>94375974>I don't bother with the PC models since I once got one with only the vague suggestion of a facedamn. I just impulse bought one because dwarves are neat. It's at least looking like I can clean up -enough- to get one decent angle to display him from, but if anyone ever picks it up to look closer they are gonna see some real fuckshit lmao
>>94376147I have several CIT paints, gotten either in boxsets or when I want to follow a tutorial/guide. I don't care for any of them. I don't like how they look vastly different when dry. I don't like how behaviour varies widely between one colour and the next of the same range. I don't like their dumb pot designs. I don't like how the majority behave like ass when airbrushed requiring some voodoo tier minmaxing to get the mix just right for it to work nicely. I in fact can't think of a single good thing to say about them, other than possibly the convenience when going for specific warhammer(tm) approved schemes, but this is offset by the paints being useless outside of the fantasy setting (ain't nobody painting German camp with citadel). Honestly, Vallejo/AK are superior in all ways and are flexible to boot with options for other types of minis/scales.
>>94376164No idea. The only one I can opinate is TTC, which is a bit all over the place in terms of saturation within a triad. Maybe this can help: https://youtu.be/s_CjRO1BIpUI Mostly use AK but their paints aren't organized by tone/brightness at all, much how I thought citadel worked.
>>94376108Adding to this, don't black flow air into the cup to mix. Stop being a lazy retard and mix beforehand, or use a soft brush and mix in the cup. It isn't a wine, it doesn't need aerating, you spend most of your time avoiding needlessly putting air into the paint, why the fuck you doing it in your airbrush of all places. You are drying the paint before it has left the brush. Worse, you are drying it all along the needle while at the same time clogging the nozzle by sticking your fat sausagehand into it. If you did it to vigorous you are now going to also have airbubbles in your mix large enough to cause your spray to splutter, blowing wet paint raspberries all over your model, mocking your shit mix technique.

Looking for some advice, been using a fdm 3d printer to build a 1000 point Tau and space marine army. Space marine """sternguard""" on the right was my first attempt at painting/printing. Farsight on the left is the last mini I "finished" as well as the last of my tau army.I know you need to thin your paints with water, I thought I was doing a decent job, but taking a picture showed me how absolutely caked these guys are. >>94376864Well at least this answers the question about metal legs on farsight. There is no golden ratio, too dependant on the paint. I have had paints that I could just dampen my brush and paints for which a near 1:1 mix was needed. You want it to flow but not pool. On the palette I want to be able to pull my brush through the paint without it leaving a textured brushmark trail, but not so thinned that the trail is instantly filled again. You don't want mud, you don't want a puddle, you want silk, you want that delicious gravy train, that rich demiglaze, that smooth sauce anglaise. When inn doubt, paint a small section that is not noticeable (underside of stuff is a good place), paint it, then let it dry; THICC? Thin it. Tidemarks/coffee stains/splitting of pigment and medium? Unthin it (add paint).Biggest tip, paint more, no tips are replacement for experience.
Cold weather is coming so I can't prime and/or varnish outdoors. Have to learn how to use an airbrush without clogging the damned thing but I'm retarded. I feel like shit, /wip/.

Farsight especially is a pain in the fucking ass to paint fully assembled, even just leaving his boosters off helps a ton already (when you this, remember that you either need to use superglue or scrape away paint in the connecting points, paint on paint cannot be reliable glued with regular old plastic melting glue).

>>94375349But what did you the silver on, because the spoon doesn't look primed (many primers chemically bond with the plastics used in minis, so it can't come off short of sanding it down). So what you have essentially done is laid down a tarp without anchorpoints, bolted a sheet of steel to it, and then be surprised when it blows away with the wind. I.e. your gloss is on a layer of paint that isn't attached to anything. Yes, varnish can be used to "seal in" paints, no it won't magically make stuff stick in place if it isn't doing so itself to some degree already.

I stopped working on this glottkin a few months ago and while I've been hammering away at my projects and selling most of my backlog/unwanted stuff, this glottkin has kind of turned into a tumor for me (no pun intended). I like the model, I like the lore, and I like the idea of him leading my slimy stinky boys. it's always in the back of my mind. it's a really cool model but I lost the motivation to do a super tryhard job on it. I never tried any of the "big monster" techniques like drybrushing or contrast paints. I just airbrushed it and then highlighted all the folds and muscles by hand. I'm considering starting over and just spraying it all black then a heavy boney drybrush and spraying it again with mantis warriors green, or spraying it down with a strong green then drybrushing it with a muted green or yellow.Any tips bros? I've never painted anything this big before and idk what to do to get it done. I want to get started on the details already and it's been sitting there eyeing me while I work on other stuff. can I still this guy without starting over? Anybody know any guides for big monsters? This guy has some texture to it but not as much as a GUO. tldr: I've lost my inspiration for this glottkin and I need some tips on how to get it done quickly to a presentable standard from anybody with experience painting lots of big things>>94379271damn, that looks awesome. the paddies look like brownies. brings me back to the spring of '68.

>>94379071I do not. I rarely vidya, when I do it is something along the lines of dwarfortress, which I suppose is violent in the strictest sense of the word, but a bunch of ascii characters duking it out isn't exactly postal. Most of my hobbytime is spent on models.
An anons made a post last thread about how he enjoys painting more comfy minis more and I gotta say, that shit made me think.Games Workshop builds their model with maximum details in mind, which is fine and all, but painting it can most definitely be a massive pain in the ass because of all the small, little details. I remember painting my first SoB, it was genuinely not enjoyable at all, so when it comes to mini designs, I prefer those that actually considered the painters too and are more chill to paint.
>>94379271I finally realized why tabletops always look a bit off, more zo then I'd expect thema to (they will obviously never actually rivaal reality). I used tot think it was something about the scale, or the texturen, or the lack of detail, but yoir helos made me realize what it is (at least for me). It is the lightning, barely anything had a shadow, only massieve objects ir things very close tot the ground cast a shadow andere then it i s a ps2 era shadow due tot the several lightsources. You could argue the same would apply IRL with a Bright sun at noon, but the thing about that, is that a noon sun is fucking BRIGHT, room lights are usually not, they are lichting everything because, again, they are multisourced.I reckon if you tot a single Bright licht source placed moderately far away from the taboe things woukd look a lot player (not ideal to play on I suppose).Anyway, great landscape, all of the above is is no way meant tot take away trom that.
>>94378980How'd you do the green? That is soms amazingly subtle effect on that skin, the kind of thing that is so subtle you barely notice it, which is really quite the skill. e.g. a paintjob that instantly registers as metal VS a paintjob that reads as something that is supposed to read as metal, the former rarely gets commented on because it is subtle and just looks so natural your brain kinda glosses over the fact that it was done by hand. Same here with the skin.
I think I've begun to realize that I like the idea of miniature painting more than I like any miniatures actually being soldMaybe I should just switch to historicals or something
>>94379854>Maybe I should just switch to historicals or somethingWE GOT ANOTHER ONE, BOYS!
>>94379854Maybe look for prints that you actually like and either print them yourself or pay someone to do it for you? I've never bothered to look but anons here said you can get stuff on etsy, too
>>94379854Kinda same, I noticed that a bit too late because I want to finish the kits I already have. Don't get me wrong I like a lot of even GW stuff but I'd much rather just paint like max 5 of the same dudes and move on instead of having to do 10. I'll probably look into busts or some alternative companies that make minis/figures designed with painting and displaying them in mind
>>94379799This is why I like oathmark minatures. Enough minatures to be nice but not so much that it's a pain to paint them.
>>94379874I'll admit I'm still a beginner but in my case I enjoy the painting process but don't feel anything for the end result most of the timeI've considered painting display models instead but I'm still pretty new and bad and the learning curve there is very harsh
>>94379572I use real plants, or parts of it. I dry them and the set it on glue/resin to stop the decay. I usually am after the shape. E.g. the trimmings of pine(like) trees make for excellent mini trees. Just trim and shape, hot glue on a base, tree done. With Christmas coming up you can just collect this from wherever with all the trees being sold. Bonus point for it actually smelling like a tree.
Im looking for some painting literature and am zeroing in on the minipedia collection by scale75 (not the whole bundle, just 4-5 of the books that interest me).Does anyone have them and can give some insight wether its worth the price or not?some other book recommendations would be appreiciated as well.
>>94379874>>94379891I don't actually care that much about tabletop playability since I don't have a local scene anyway, I only ever bought minis with the intention of painting them and putting them up on a shelf, but the subjects just kind of do nothing for me most of the time
>>94379854That's the point where you should actually start looking into sculpting, if kitbashing is not enough for you.
>>94379854This is why I only paint display pieces. I like tzeentch lord of change, because I like birbs. The rest of the army is absolute dumpster tier IMO, and the idea of painting 2k points worth of turquoise/purple blobby things is really off putting (which is why I don't)

>>94379948That looks like some fun mordheim scenario waiting to happen
>>94379271>>94379284nice to see someone who actually puts love into their setup.
>>94379891It is a solo activity, the learning curve is as steep and long as you want it to be. When I was 12 I painted a b72 stealth bomber. It was black, just the whole thing black, and then I put some real oil (I was 12) around the wheel wells and exhausts, which you couldn't see because the plane was fucking black. I plopped on the transfers as per the manual and was done. That was literally a days worth of modelling for kid me. Currently I am eyeing a tamiya F4 phantom for a challenge.I can recommend some kits if you let me know what interests you (era, type of vehicle, nation, desired complexity/fidelity and price range)
>>94379903>buying booksI mean. If you really want to support the author, sure, just make sure it is actually the author you support and not the griffter publishing companies.
>>94379932How do I get into painting display minis without going broke buying a billion paintsIt's a lot easier with armies where you're going to paint most of your dudes in similar colors but not only do display minis demand way higher effort, you also need a completely different set of colors for each one
>>94379932>LoCI've loved that mini ever since I first saw it in that old gw painting guide they were handing out at lgs. I bought it a while back but was waiting to improve a bit more till I paint it. Think I might be at a level where I can do him some justice now, maybe I'll get to him soon
>>94379989I already do planes and mecha actually, I think I just find the majority of minis too grotesque
>>94379903There's the two volumes from angel giraldez IIRC, but I think he goes deep into using an airbrush, so I'm always on the fence about getting them.
>>94379995Several factors at play:I am single with a stable job and aside from the food I eat and the roof over my head I have some insurance/utility bills to pay and that it is, the rest of my income is disposable. I treat the single models I get as a project which sometimes last me several weeks. And the project has a plan and paints. Gotta remember, 1 model doesn't eat your pots, so the shelflife is very long. For example one of my earlier projects was a German stug tank, I did some background research on the tank and how I wanted it to look. I then got the required colours from Vallejo and AK. Primer rotbraun, certain yellows browns and greens for the camo (got it as a set), a pigment or two, a panel liner, some rust and oil staining and done as I didn't want to go overboard. I already had an airbrush/compressor, a one time investment. The kit set me back a whopping 25 Euros iirc, and all together I got 10 paints/pigments or so for 40 euros give or takeand another 10 for the priner. Done. I recently got a hannomag (the German half track), cost of kit was 10 Euros (on offer). I still have the rotbraun, I still have the yellow I want to paint it as, I still have the pigments, I bought some paints for the figures and for some of the wood that is part of the model. Done. What I am NOT doing is getting a random massive GW mini once a week along with their app recommended 25 different paints to make it "parade ready" @5 Euros per pot. That would set me back about 8 times as much for something I don't see the point of. I'll get specific models I like the look of (I have a squad of smurf), or what I usually do, is get a KT which I find are far more reasonably priced, is a format Ia actually enjoy playing an and usually takes me about a month or two to complete at my pace (so the cost of the exotic weird paints I might need to do something like e.g. eldar, is a financial "impact" on a 2 month period, which is completely fine).
>>94380022If you haven't yet, the Messerschmitt from airflix is a doozy and one of the best price/quality things I have ever bought. It is my go to model advice for anyone new, returning, or simply looking for a relatively small project. It's price point makes it so you don't feel like you fucked up something expensive when you make a mistake. Literally a tenner at my LGS, and 13 Euros on Amazon.I forgot to sign up for as this year, but if I had it would have found its way into the parcel as a bonus gift along with the required paints. Hell, I'ma order myself one right now.
What are the best non-GW speedpaints?I've found the vallejo xpress line need two coats a lot of the time.Seems really difficult to find a good orange.

>>94380213The Army Painter isn't bad. Picked up their official Battletech set at my local cause they had a sale on.
>>94380121Mecha stuff can get really expensive in terms of paint, I've seen models where it's pretty much impossible to realistically get below $200 in paint. 30+cm tall models you have to paint entirely in multi layered high reflectivity metallic coatings, that kinda thing.
>>94380274My bad. I meant more what are people's favourite colours in particular.Like I think Xpress Orc Skin is the best orc skin although really one coat's not enough. The GW ones are too dark.
>>94380275>gunplaYa, no idea man, the gunpla crowd are weird.
>>94380275>200 dollars worth of paint for 1 modelExplain, this doesn't make sense in any way whatsoever. Unless this is a scenario in which you are brand new to the hobby and have 0, at which point 200 dollars is a one time upfront cost, after which you just buy new as it runs out. I don't believe you're using 200 dollarseorth if paint PER model every single time.
>>94380341It was admittedly the most extreme example, and I don't fuck with models like that myself, but in that particular case it's a massive model, 30-40cm whose paintjob requires around 5 layers of different paint.
>>94380341Large gunpla models have like 500 parts that a lot of people will paint individually. 200 dollars seems like a stretch, but you could easily get into the 20-50$ range for an MG in paint USED, so it's not completely unbelievable.Compared to minis though it's true that when you get paint for a gunpla project it's more of a>I'm buying this pot for this project and don't really expect to have much left afterwardsrather than minis where you buy a paint because you need to use 4 drops of it.
>>94380596I think the worst I've ever had was going through 4 or 5 pots of multiple paints just for 1 color on 1 model but that's because the recipe for that color was clear silver, then dark clear blue, then 50/50 clear purple with medium, another layer of clear silver, and finally clear white to lighten the color and adjust the saturation.
>>94380121Advice for paints? Can't really go wrong for 10 yuropbucks.
Anons might shit on me for this slopjob, but I genuinely had way more fun with this 20 minute paintjob than a 4 hour ork kommando. The design is so simple and chill to paint and you can do it so quickly, way more satisfying than hard to paint crazy detailed GW minis, lile SoB, Admech or Orks.Gonna immediately paint another one.
>>94380732I like him. Fuck the police; he cute.
>>94380688Man I've built a couple scales with my dad when I was a kid, now you're making me want to give it a shot.
>>94380732it would be better if you had scraped the moldline
>>94380213>need two coatsThats a good thing, because not always you want a full coverage. Many of the 2nd batch of the GW Contrasts fail at being translucent, and they just cover, with almost no contrast effect. I am a fan of GSW's dipping ink "Black dip", but it also does not cover completely with one coat. I use it a lot of times over a white zenithal to achieve a worn black look, and it is my go-to paint for any kind of dark gun metal. I use it to paint over metallic paint instead of nuln oil/any black wash to shade the metallic paint. Bonus is that its dirt cheap in that it comes in a 60ml bottle for less than a pot of GW contrast.Other very good ones:GW Dreadful Visage (a very pale and light purple tone, its also more like a wash). Very good for pale faces/skin.Xpress Landser Grey: Just a good paint to quickly paint military uniforms. Name suggests its a German WW2 shade, and it probably works for them, but it is generic enough for everything. Xpress Velvet Red replaced my GW Flesh Tearer Red when i ran out of it. Both are equally good, but Xpress is just cheaper.
How's this flame look? I'm not brave enough for OSL just yet, but I can try my hand at a flame.

About stripping paint from resin minis. Is any all purpose cleaner work fine if i can't find simple green or purple cleaner stuff?
>>94380732>mfw people complain about GW minis being overloaded with detail and I chose to paint admech and tsons
>>94380732So quick... so simple... so satisfying... I'm sorry bros. I'm going to slopmaxx (open for other name suggestions). Am I going to win sny prizes with this, fuck no. But as someone who paints to play and wants to get done with a variety of minis for my solo RPGs, this seems to be the best way for me: neat, simple, humble minis without a ton of details. I can paint ~8 of those instead of one ork kommando. A nice palatte cleanser after doing 10 of those. >>94380902I bought a Battle Sisters box and straight up just gave up immediately after further anslysing the minis lmao.
>>94380827>Many of the 2nd batch of the GW Contrasts fail at being translucent, and they just cover, with almost no contrast effect. That's because they shouldn't have been called contrast paints. They're single pigment paints that cover excellently and make difficult colors like bright yellow easy.
>>94381046>open for other name suggestionsIdon'twanttopaintism
>>94381101Imperial Fist does have a mild contrast effect, though. It’s that other yellow that is just a flat yellow all through. And ironjawz yellow has a great, super noticeable effect.
>>94380884Probably, but test on a few minis you don't care overmuch about before you dump the lot in there. Probably best to let the test pieces sit for a week or two afterwards as well to make sure there's nothing delayed going on.
>>94381046>slopmaxx (open for other name suggestions). It's just called speedpainting
>>94381046If you spar some matte varnish on this it will instantly become 70% less sloppy. That’s some serious gloss we’re seeing right there.
>>94381129I wish 3d printed resin was as resilient as cast resin, I can dunk my cast resin figs in hardware store lacquer thinner to strip them with no damage to the model
>>94381101This doesn't even make any sense.I agree that contrasts are basically just regular paint at this point but how does that explain GW not being able to make a yellow paint until that one?
>>94380852>I'm not brave enough for OSLMost OSL are out of place, anyway, considering that most people assume that the armies fight on daytime.
>>94380902I spent like three hours per Kommando on my kill team. I love how they turned out, but I'll be the first to admit that they have an insane level of details
>>94381152Because it explicitly needs to go over white.Over black this would be basically invisible.Their existing yellow paints aren't pure. They'll have white pigment for coverage.
>>94381152Niggers were incapable of priming any color besides black until they were specifically told to for contrasts
>>94381159Realistic lighting on minis would be boring as sin, they'd just look completely flat and dull with washed out colors for scale effect
>>94381191where the fuck did the black undercoat/primer meme even came from? It only works for really dark schemes and metallics, for literally everything else you'll be better off with neutral grey or off-white/white
>>94381237it was standard advice back in the day. I got into the hobby in like 2004 and pretty much everyone would tell you to prime with black. I guess the idea was that if you missed a spot it would likely be in a recess and therefore the black would be like a shadow but obviously we've evolved since then.
>>94381101>That's because they shouldn't have been called contrast paints.Yes. It was weird move by GW to release those paint under the "Contrast" label instead of grouping them into their own type.
>>94381265Who the fuck misses a spot while base costing? Shit is deadass simple. I always hear people say it’s because of a “shading effect” but sobe never seen that work out unless you use a zenithal highlight or something like that.
>>94381295GW should've just called them what their competitors did - speed paints. In the beginning those faggots tried to push those as a 1 coat alternative for basecoat+wash so calling it something along those lines would be bad for marketing. People quickly caught up that gave shitty results though but it was too late to backpedal on the name I guess so it stuck
>>94381305It was a simpler time
>>94381237>>94381265This.It was a standard thing to do, and afaik it comes from the days when people would not use a wash over the whole miniature. If primed white, and no dark wash to tone everything down, there would (most people are just not great painters) always be some bright little white spots left over, in hard to reach spots etc. So basic knowledge for every new mini painter: prime black, so if you miss a bit of primer somewhere, it wont be noticable. And it worked.White rattle cans being shit helped to sell "prime black" too.Once Agrax and Nuln Oil became standard, it was no longer "necessary", but people just kept doing it until the whole Zenithal+Slapchop thing became more or less a meme.
Any tips for using the Orruk Flesh base paint? I'm finding it to be very thin and patchy and requires quite a lot of layers to make it smooth. For a base paint it acts a lot more like a thin layer.
>>94381305IF you are a good painter, you can use a black primer to leave outlines. Kinda create a cellshading effect. If you suck at painting, which most beginners do, it helps to hide mistakes.Simple as.

Shit. I fucked up somewhere and am looking for advice. All 3 models I primed with demonic yellow and painted then put a gw brand ink wash on the middle one to get an orange look but I can't remember what I used. >i'm a photographerwhat fucking photography has mizzy done?
>>94382020Huh, sounds like it is you who is in the wrong hobby. There is a general dedicated to historical/scales where your argument holds more water. If you want to be a sillygoose and do the whole "I'm an artist, the mini my canvas" nonsense be my guest, but realise you are just that, a guest.
>>94382126This, there is a reason it started with 3 color armies. Painting was a means to an end. That there are now people who enjoy painting in and of itself is cool, but they are wrong to think that is the norm and they should really get out of their airraid shelter and play some IRL games to see the average armies people use to play. The majority of people paint to play with pieces that look cool on the table, not to have their minis scutinized under magnification.
>>94382126This is only true for actually good game systemsWarhammer has great minis and shit systems, so why neglect the former to get more out of the latter
>>94382084>That will make none of your minis look organic ever.Say it with me:"Skill""issue"Imagine thinking the only way to paint organics is with washes/contrasts and drybrushing. It's like you guys don't even know traditional art exists. Have you ever seen a painting?
>>94381935Oh sweet, now you have my attention. Good true metallics are hard to come by since the sad retirement of boltgun metal.
>>94381846Every technique hyperfocussed on painting instead of creating presentable armies in a timely fashion is wrong. The goal is to minmax time spent painting against the quality of the result.
>>94382094Playing the game and painting are two separate hobbies. Ofc, there is a huge amount of overlap, but you can do either of the two and not bother with the other.>so many greytide playersIts different from region to region i think, but a player absolutely can enjoy painting. Its just that it takes forever to paint an entire army. I personally know someone who loves to paint, but it takes him a months or so to finish a single figure (he mostly paints busts these days), and he just will never be able to paint a full army, so he does not even try.
>>94382189Nta, but I find that using a bright aluminium followed by a satin varnish followed by a transparent color of choice works quite nicely to get a metallic look. That is quite flexible in the use if your paints.

>>94382195True for army painting but not mini painting in general.
>>94381317It's crazy because contrasts are often noob traps unless you're like Juan Hidalgo. But the non-contrast contrast paints are fucking awesome for vibrant colours. They're like the opposite of the fanatic line which is so pastel because they've put so much white pigment in.

Laying in a little less harsh shading with brown or dark grey just following the fold lines and such could help a bit. In future unload your drybrush more and dampen the bristles before you pick up the paint, you're overbrushing real hard. You can see clumping on the fingers and dusty chunks everywhere.>>94382189P3's Boltgun Metal equivalent was really good, not sure what'll happen to it now that the company got sold but I bought a couple pots just to be safe.

>>94373802Still filling up my anon's parcel and looking for the cringiest christmas card I can find, but should be good to go next week. Ne brini, hrvanon.
>>94382355>I actually can't think of anything that doest western mechs right.Define "Western Mechs" because we can move on from there. Death Ray, Black Site, those Polish dudes doing knockoff Battletech, Ground Zero Games, Impact Miniatures, C.A.V., Kryomek.. there are a fuckton of people doing all sorts of more industrial and tank-like mechs all the way out to bizzare shit like Maschinen Krieger>>94382543I'm not paying over a hundred bucks for multple GW models when there are much better-looking alternatives. Including paying my brother to 3DP stuff for me.>>94382677I have serious depth perception problems (massive astigmatism in one eye) but you can compensate for it with habits like physically indexing your brush. Basically hold the model in a clamp, cup your hand around it while holding the bottom of the clamp with your ring and pinky fingers, and use one of your other fingers to touch the back of your brush hand or index finger. It takes some getting used to. Hard to use for larger models. On the bright side it also dramatically reduces the effect of a hand tremor. For big stuff (and carpentry/calligraphy) you can put on a glove and use the middle finger to touch off on the workpiece to keep a constant index distance. Still gotta worry about smearing but it's better than going in blind and rawdogging it.You can also set up a strong light source on one side of your painting area and use the distance between the brush and its shadow to determine the tip placement. Then set up more diffuse lighting on the other side to check the effect.
>knock over open PVA bottle>knock over my paint water glass in my annoyed attempt to contain the PVAnami>this is when I find out I have run out of any sort of absorbent tissue>use TP>it disintegrates and basically paper mached my deskI'm so tired bros...eyes heavy, I think I go sleep.
>>94382831>when there are much better-looking alternativesSuch as? I'm genuinely interested.
>>94377917The checker pattern on the tights is a nice touch, gj. I would add a bit of cheek blush to the top of her booblies, but it looks good as is.(I also have a magazine for her to handle hurr hurr hurr)
>>94382796Et voila, you have what I have, a lazy eye. This can affect depth perception depending on its severity (mine for instance isn't too bad, I still score 20/20, but I can tell my left is the better eye) when I paint when very tired I notice my depth perception gets worse. Other anon already gave tips on bow to compensate.
>>94382853>checker patternI think those are supposed to be fishnet stockings anon
>>94379271Takes real dedication to light your terrain on fire like that, gj anon
>>94382874Anon, look higher, where the boner is made
>>94382965o shit, my bad, didn't even notice that
>>94382874Not at the top band for the fishnet stockings, bud
>>94378917Here's all of mine. These are the finished ones. My fav is still the cleric with the white robes with the paizuri hole. But seeing them together makes me realize I really need to set it up, because I have so much unfinished>>94379842I mostly airbrushed them. But for deeper or finer shading, blush, and the ears it's just a matter of blending using thin layers>>94382430Nice, anon! I heard about varuna. Sorry for your loss.>>94382853I simply copied kabewski's art, anon. I can't take credit for that
>>94382705I must admit that I also don't play, except one "introduction" game at shop but thats just because Im too scared to ask anyone. Local scene use solely facebook, too.
>>94382705I also don't like competition, I've thought about picking up KDM since it's cooperative, is it good?
>>94382430I had to stop painting with my lamp on recently, but I think it was just due to sensory overload (I hope it's nothing worse). Take a break for a while, and if it keeps getting worse maybe check with a doctor. Hope you're ok.
>>94381941What the fuck are you doing, man.
>>94383137I think it's a fun "dark souls meets monster hunter" game with nice models. It's far from the most complex game out there, but some might find it difficult. Games can also last an afternoon if your village is wiped out or turn into days-long campaigns with the right decisions/rolls.
If kingdom death could actually begin the shipping process for my order that'd be cool.
>>94383240>>94383276They do sales on black friday don't they? I need to remember to grab a couple of their minis then
>>94383295I don't really care, I just need it to ship asap so I can send my SS out and it's just been in like "store is preparing your order" shipping status all week.
>>94377941Okay, so I decided to work on the skater gob instead, since she's already partially painted. I was stuck on what to paint on the bottom of the skateboard, but now I'm not sure if I should freehand anything on her shirt.
>>94383321Here's what I went with for her skateboard design
>>94383325cute
>>94383325heh. Dead Kennedys or "gams" in the style of the Vans logo could be good.

>>94381318>tfw I got this for $20 at a yard sale
>>94382614really good stuff anon, is that custom plasticard armour too?
>>94381941I'd say try it and see, since the worst outcome is you're gonna have to strip anyway. Might as well use them as an experiment.
>>94382302>Where is this /smg/?I want to say /k/, but they don't have one and it's a crying shame. No, I'm too lazy to make one.
>>94382430>Another day, another group of plastic soldiers>plasticAnon, what kind of shit recasts are you using?
>>94382581Post link or make/model, I'm interested in what kind people use.
>>94382634Make an entire army list that's nothing but a convoluted sequence of proxies, bonus points for unit A proxying unit B while unit C proxies unit A which actually has minis on the table but you have an appropriate number of C. Of course there's no written key and everything's explained aloud, repeat the [whole] explanation every time they ask, be perfectly polite every time but with a quiet sigh and a discreet eye roll. That should be enough to kill your buddies by way of brain aneurysm.
