>Thread question:
What would your dream model be for GW to add to the game? I don't just mean "oh they should add x unit to my army," but if you could design any model for whatever faction with or without lore constraints, what would it look like? And as always, post models, level of WIP or skill doesn't matter, I just like seeing cool paint jobs and encouraging beginners.

Mark Gibbons was responsible for most of the iconic logo design in games workshop's history. They hired a comics guy and he delivered. His regular art style is not for everyone but I personally love it. Those sharp toothy skulls are his hallmark.

David Gallagher and Wayne England are also worth looking at, albeit less consistent than Kopinski. Probably some more ink artists I haven't mentioned as well. GW commissioned a lot of 2000AD talent to fill in the black and white parts of their books/mags.

> What would your dream model be for GW to add to the game?

1. "Assault Jump Pack" (actually with teleporters) Rubric troops

2. "Havoc" Rubrics squad with various magical heavy weaponry

3. CSM "Eliminators" with strong Alpha Legionaries vibes

4. Classical Tactical Squad with various equipment, but for Primaris

5. Tau unit that attacks with Drones across entire field, but is vulnerable just like average pathfinder. Just like in a real Donbass.

6. CSM Redemptor Dreadnaught :3

7. Battle Sisters Squad, but with melee weapons. (So basically give novitiates power armour and few more melee options).

Bonus: Also Cannoness w Shield.

I know some old blog interview or essay had a deep dive into his career but I haven't been able to find it again. He was brought on to do faction badges for WHFB and 40k in the early 90s and it just sorta worked out.

Most of those little gap filling symbols and logos in 2nd/3rd edition-ish codexes and white dwarfs would have been him. I know he was working in-house until at least 4th edition, but probably a bit later. Details about artists gets muddier as the company got bigger and he was working in the background on miniature concepts and design at that point so we saw a lot less of his stuff. (the tyranid war veteran concept art is still good and GW not doing proper tyrannic war vets to go with that new lieutenant is a crime)

If you look at 40k its basically an analogy for our times from a conservatuve perspective. I know some people think its an analogy for Byzantium or the Western Roman empire. But it clearly applies to our time. Undertrained militaries, but super duper special forces. Corrupt elites, infiltration of society on every level by morally bankrupt groups, external enemies all around, dozens of on going wars with no end in sight. People who still like the west becoming more closemind (either evangelical or fascist), Outright xenophobia, a feeling pf emminent doom.
Urban areas declining into crime and gang filled slums.
Competency crisis, young people dont know how to create high tech shit, the best they can do is maintain it.
"Scientism" becoming more like a religion everyday (progress being god), and cults of personality.
We metaphorically live in the world of 40k, because art reflects reality.

Dark Angel has their "secret" with part of the legion going to chaos.

So, there's two more factors at play here:
>Dark Angels is his second army. He spends most of his painting time on his admech (poor bastard)
>He is actually painting his models, they're just not done yet.
There's a big difference between someone playing greytide because they're not painting their models, and someone playing greytide because they're still painting their models.

I think it's because of internal autism within GW.
What I mean is that since GK baby carrier was the first one to exist it has basically set up the design ethos for most of the human piloted Imperial mechs.
The autism steps in because GW wants everything to be derivative or whatever shit.
So they don't like deviating from a design so they must share design elements, even if the design itself is complete dogshit.
Basically GW can never admit that they are wrong. It's the reason why even the game rules are such fucking garbage in 10th.
There are plain obvious shit ideas that should have never been done, like free wargear because it makes any semblance of balance a joke. For example is no way of having a bolt pistol and a plasma pistol be considered the same "price" and have it make sense when the plasma pistol is just a straight upgrade with better stats.
But since GW can't admit they fucked up and did something stupid, their only solution is to just fucking double down on it, or pretend that it doesn't exist, or completely rewrite rules, where they try to reinvent the fucking wheel for like the 3rd time.

That was because Stoner was in a time when everyone tried having more all-in-one guns rather than all the different designs throughout WWII. More weapons that do multiple prior roles. Stoner was basically
>Fuck it, you want something that does everything? Here.
Thus the complexity of the system needed to accommodate shifting roles. But it was mostly used in two roles at best.

It had a different niche than the M60, being lighter than it but heavier than an M16. That niche was formerly filled by captured RPDs. But people today are trying to fill it with M27s and other heavier barrel ARs given a drum mag. Mark my words, the true reason they wanted the M27 was not for that role as I doubt a mag fed can do what a belt fed can. Even historically, there's anecdotes of RPK users preferring a PKM. They have those M249s in storage and will get them back out. They only pretend to replace them after their attempts at getting longer barrel ARs were rejected numerous times.

I honestly forget; I know that the Black Rage makes marines go into a enraged state where they're pushing their muscles 110% all the time, even when they don't need to. The more immediate effect is the hallucinations and psychosis and most DC marines don't live long enough for something as extreme as physical mutation to happen.
I don't know the source of that comic at all.
That said, Lemertes is physically fully in the Black Rage all the time and isn't mutated. His mind is still there, though, so the chapter just puts him in stasis until he's needed.

Different countries have different military doctrines. Your C'tans make sense as the brawly monsters of your Necrons, but they wouldn't fit into a Tau gunline.
The AK is inaccurate, especially at long range. It's designed to be impossible to break and to provide a high volume of covering fire, as well as being reasonable for a rifle in CQC and urban combat, which was more common on the Eastern front than sniping or entrenchment. This makes sense for the Soviet doctrines of WW2 and for guerrilla combat; it makes less sense for the Western front.
>>
>>94381095
sorta
they're spendy to collect and they have a lot of details to paint in despite being a high body count army, with a non-straight forward playstyle

>>
>>94381060
A few reasons
>not as accurate
>worse ammo
>prone to corrosion
>doesn't work well in certain environments
>politically charged due to reliance on Russia for support
You can also try to develop your own system based on it, but at the end of the day the AR-15 plataform is just superior in general. The AK is sturdier when the guns are neglected, but if well kept the AR is more reliable and work better in almost all environments, save for harsh winters (mechanism can't brute firce ice out of the day if frozen).
>>
>>94381095
Expensive, intricate, and high model count are the downsides on the hobby side.
On the tabletop, they're a complicated army with a lot of moving parts. If played well they're incredibly good, but they're HARD to play well.
For the average person, I'd recommend staying away. But if you love their look and their guerrilla warfare identity, go for it. Liking your army is more important than anything else.
>>
There's a funny story about the Millennium Challenge, a 2002 wargame. One side decided to not use as much electronic communication but more oldschool couriers to avoid interception. Slower yes but it meant enemy jamming was not a thing if they can't predict routes and intercept them. That same side ended up winning and the whole thing argued over regarding rules abuse or which side was using it as a propaganda tool. Still, we have many historic cases where people fall back on less advanced ways as a counter to modern ways being jammed or negated somehow.
>>
>>94381125
Gotcha. I like the sci-fi and the innsmouth aesthetics and I thought they'd be more interesting to bring to my LGS than another Loyalist Space Marine group. But also, this all sounds intimidating.
>>
>>94381060
>Not a gun guy but why doesnt everyone just use the AK47
Because the AK-47 is an outdated gun made in (relatively) small numbers that nobody fucking uses. The AKM is a bit better but contrary to what people have been memed into believing, does not actually like wet, muddy conditions. The sloppy, somewhat open action allows ingress of mud and debris that can jam the rifle.
That said it was still better than the M14 or M16 at the time because the M14 was just as bad at getting gunked up and equally inaccurate and the M16 had shit ammo that fouled the fuck out of the rifle and few cleaning kits.
Still, logistics is king and the DoD wasn't buying 7.62x39 to replenish AK's that US soldiers (officially) weren't using.
Today? AK is just worse than AR rifles in every catagory that matters. The only arguments you can make in its favor are extreme cold conditions.

You watch a couple of literal leftist tranny gun channels like Ian and that other jizz drinking bozo dumping mud right into an AKs bolt to show how much more reliable the AR is. Yeah, if the challenge that day was "how much mud can be poured onto the side of the gun and have it work right after", the AR would win precisely because of what you said, it's more enclosed. Show me a real mud test, with grass and twigs and shit, not some bullshit slurry packed into the AK receiver and lightly smeared on the AR dust cover.

Now have that gun out in the field for months as you inevitably build up dust, sand, dirt, and carbon up in both systems and see which one works better. I have nothing against the AR as I like it better for competition. But if I had to choose one rifle to take with me to the field for extended use it'd be the AK simply because it'd be the least likely to have a major malfunction.

Anyone have good experiences with Chaos termies, specifically 5 man squads. My friend is selling a box + a Terminator Sorc and I think they might be fun, but 260 points feels like a big investment for them to plop onto the board from Deep Strike, fail their charge and die.

any army is a beginner army as long as you are interested in it. interest far outweighs learning curve, and if you're going to drop $500+ on an army it damn well better be one you like the look and lore of, not just one you picked because its easy.

so go with your gut, play the army you want and learn as you go

In my headcanon, there must be many surviving Lasguns which unintentionally outlived their owners but buried under rumble for some native tribal or hiveworlder to find. IRL we have anecdotes like
>https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-AK-47-so-good/answer/Roland-Bartetzko
>During a major enemy combat operation in Kosovo, I placed a ten kilo TNT explosive device inside a small shop near our base.
>When our enemies, the Serbs, entered the small building, they activated the bomb that we had put under the counter.
>I went there two days later with one of my buddies to assess the damage. The shop was almost completely gone: the explosion had blown all four walls away, the roof was inexistent, and the rubble from the store’s front completely blocked the nearby road. The massive iron door of the shop had “flown” more than ten meters away and had “landed” on the other side of this road.
>We immediately started removing the debris to see if the Serbs had left anything useful in the shop. After two hours of hard work, we found two AK-47 “Kalashnikov”.
>While all the other stuff that we had found was damaged (a small bag, military boots, a watch, and some body parts belonging to the Serbs), the AKs looked fine. Besides a broken iron sight on one of them, they almost looked as if they were new. We tested them and they both worked perfectly.

A Lasgun ought to survive the same thing and still function. I doubt the Guard would systematically scavenge every square inch and just assume the weapon was destroyed, leading to future scavengers finding them.

Yeah, also people that started in 2000 had decades to get really good and learning new techniques and way to get effects and blends.
Also, tons of arthoes and people that actually studied art got into the hobby and further pushed the quality. Look at the golden demon winners over the years, it's insane how refined painters became.

Afternoon boys, lots of read for any who care to.
Need suggestions for my "Siege of Armageddon" scenario I'm trying to make with friends. At first we were going to do a flat 1k battle between Orks vs Black Templars and Imperial guard.
I've convinced my friends for a narrative battle instead.
The Imperials will have most of the ruins terrain in a defensive set up. I, Da Orks, will start T0 with no big terrain. Before the game starts I will take all my trukks and wagons and drive them up the map and my friends will roll for explosions. The vehicles that get blown up will become my terrain, if the vehicle makes it to the wall it will crash and leave a huge hole in the wall. The crashed vehicles are ork spawn points for up to what they can carry, but I have a roll for wounds when I use those points since they got blown up. Or I can set them up at full strength on the board.
The scenario will be that the Imperials are trying to hold in a last stand for 5 turns as the guard way in the back (off the table) are preparing a huge volley of arty salvos targeting the orks. They have to hold 3 objectives inside their fort. The orks need to take all three, or kill the Imperials. The humies, will have about 1k, with the marines getting an apothecary with 2 charges to heal (running low on suppies). The guard have their own medics. (1/2)

Starting on T2 and on, if any ork units/models were killed, the Defending team will roll a "Good Scrap" roll. Which narratively, the noise and krumpin is attracting orks from the nearby battlefields. After T3, the Imperials are getting some guns ready possibly allowing for a Salvo from an Earthshaker cannon on any unit of orks.
Good scrap rolltable
2D6: the lower the roll probability, the worse it gets, with the lower of the matching probability being worse for the imps
7:Refresh (orks from the neighboring battle arrive to bring back 1 squad to full strength, up to the first strength value, eg. Boyz 10)
8: 10 boyz + 2 refresh or 1 rally (rally is squad returns to second strength value, eg. Boyz 20)
6: 20 boyz + 2 squads rally
9: 5 nobz
5: 10 nobz
10: 1 killa Kan
4: 3 killa Kans
11: 1 deff dread
3: 2 deff dreads
12: nothing / after T3, imps get 1 Salvo (Take aim!, T4 12-11 for a salvo, T5 12-10)
2: auto-waaagh, after t3 Ghazghkull Thraka, 3 meganobs, auto-waaagh!
If the option is not available ( due to lack of models), just move up to the next available, eg 2 deff dreads still on field, a 3 is rolled, move up to as if 11 was rolled. Deff dread not available, move up to as if a 4 was rolled, etc etc.)

Yeah sure, of course they have an explanation for why they have to do bad things. Most evil in human history was done with justifications like that. Doesn't make it a good deed.

anon, I'm not saying the imperium is good
I'm saying that the fucked up shit that the imperium does makes sense within the confines of the setting because the setting of 40k is horribly fucked up way worse than anything the imperium is doing right now
and I don't even want to hear about the fucking tau, they are literal by the book fascists and not against using their various lesser races as meatshields in any conflict that's serious enough (they let all the fucking kroot auxiliaries get eaten by the nids before engaging them properly to wear down the hive fleet) and they are a VERY small faction in a big setting that is starting to realize that the reason the other factions are so fucked up is because they have to be fucked up

Alright wiseguy, we'll switch you out to pleasure servitor and you can spend that time getting assfucked by upper hive nobles instead. If you're unlucky, there might be enough brain matter left to ponder the structural reasons that truly demand this being the standardized practice for the Imperium.

The setting would be better with Half of the existing shit removed

>Space Marine
Dark Angels
Salamander
Raven Guard
Space Wolves
White Scars
Ultramarines
Grey Knights

>Imperial Forces
Sister
Mechanicus
Guard

>Chaos
Daemons (Heavy focus on Khorne and Slaanesh)
Death Guard
TSons
Word Bearers (Proper Chaos army the combines Astartes and Daemons)

>Xenos
Aeldari (Elder)
Orks
T'Au
GSC (Orks are the hordes army)
Necrons

The way I look at it, the imperium is evil for denying people their humanity. You may argue that in order for the species to survive they need to all become soulless autists, and I think that's the irony and tragedy of the setting.
Meanwhile chaos are the opposite end of the spectrum, where they turn the emotions that make us human up to 11, to the detriment of every other part of their being.
There is no solution, human souls are currency for either the emperor or chaos, and everyone is fucked. Simple as.

you have to remember, there are places within the imperium/tau/votann where people spend their entire lives in relative safety, they go about their lives, they have friends and family, and then they die
it's a wargame, so we just hear about the worst parts of the setting where shit is really getting crazy
for factions like Chaos, Orks, and GSC there is no safety
Orks of course enjoy their lives so they're winning, life on a Daemon planet is just some of the worst shit imaginable and constant dickery

Don't even know where to start with what the fuck you were thinking with some of these choices mate.
Why keep Raven Guard and Salamanders but drop Iron Hands and Imperial Fists, all four are just space marine palette swaps with 1 character model each.
Why the arbitrary choices of two cult legions and having daemons focus on the other two gods?
Why Word Bearers specifically instead of just generic CSM for the mixed chaos army?
If Orks preclude Nids as a horde army (putting aside the fact that being run as horde armies is just one type of list for both, and that nid monster mash and ork speed or deadmob are equally valid), why not cut Guard as well?
>>
With the exception of Space Marines and CSM having specific codexes for each chapter or warband I think all the current armies are fine. For Chaos having the God legions as detachments is fine, while for SMs the chapter-specific differences aren't significant enough to warrant their own armies, save as how you build then from the stock marines accounting for flavor.
