>"the setting has about 100+ intelligent races"

>"they all look human"

are people that uncreative and lazy? just have it be those 5 races then for the entire world!
>>
>>94379582
Have you tried playing D&D (5e)?
>>
>this board has 150+ threads
>only 5 are readable
>they're generals and I've read them all before anyway
Yes, people are absolutely that uncreative and lazy.
>>
>>94379582
Why you want to hate on Talislanta like that?
>>
>>94379582
>Make race that is a slightly more different from the standart Tolkien races

>>
>>94379998
No one outside the 4chan echo chamber has ever used that word.
>>
>>94379998
Literally the only time I have ever seen this happen is when furries try to push their degeneracy on the rest of the group.
>>
>>94379582
Fuck off furfag
>>
>>94379582
>5 are playable

Human is the only playable race you need. If a game has 5 playable races, you're better off just playing DnD slop, because the developers' intentions are in the same place anyway.

Yes, they all copy Tolkien because if they don't retards on /tg/ will whine and bitch that IT ISNT REAL FANTASY.
>>
>>94379582
According to /tg/ and pretentious folk, using nothing but humans is the height of creativity and maturity the same obnoxious way that muh monsters/supernatural beings are actually a trauma allegory or we became the hallmark of "elevated horror" in film.

Most settings only have about 5 intelligent races with a positive relationship with humans, populous civilization, and no extreme magical powers. Really it should be only 4 because playing an elf really shouldn't work.

And yes, if your snake people meet all those criteria and you reject a player that wants to play one, that's dumb.
>>
>>94379582
>>"the setting has about 100+ intelligent races"

This is a good thing.
>>
>>94379582
>just have it be those 5 races then for the entire world!
Players want variety. Some players want to play something common with a major stake in the story and other players want to play something weird (equivalent to hobbits from some backwater). This is one of the many things that makes TTRPG settings different from other settings. Dumbass.
>>

it just doesnt really work or allow you to get pulled into the setting/story. how is he going to wear any of the cloths or armor thats found? how does he fit through doors for huge races and how does he not just punted away for small races?
>>
>>94384637
Nah
If you really want to peeve them off you make their race common as dirt.
The barkeep in the tavern they start in? Air Genasi. The local merchant who sells magic items? Also Air Genasi. First encounter against 6 bandits? 2 of them are Air Genasi. Local Lord? Air Genasi.

You weirdos are all the same. You can't be satisfied with an elf or something like that, you need all your games to have a race selection like this:
>Human
>Sharkgirl
>Jumping cactus
>Marionette
>Fire elemental
>Giant intelligent friendly talking spider
>>
>>94384717
ayo sharkgirl got a sister?
>>
>>94384717

Spiders are our friends, buddy.
>>
>>94384648
Did that whole town of tieflings in BG3 make the race less played?
>>
>>94385023
It wasn't a town, it was a refugee camp.
>>
>>94384637
Sadly the most popular game that features non-human races doesn't go nearly far enough to make them anything but humans with funny hats most times, so trying to make them too alien doesn't really work.

What >>94384648 suggested tends to work far better. Some guy wants to play a centaur? Sure. Incorporate some local centaur tribes and trade caravans. They could simply neighbor the country where the game takes place or be integrated within it, but nobody is going to be particularly surprised or impressed with someone being a centaur.

>n-no im not a furry w-why do you ask?

monster races are fine and even a necessary party of fantasy worlds. monster players just dont work though
>>
>>94385271
>hear someone mention a creature from greek mythology
>immediately thinks of furries and fetishes
Sounds like a (you) problem, but if you're that paranoid just stick to human-only settings.
>>
>>94384717
Of course, elves, dwarves etc. for the most part are creatively bankrupt dogshit.
What the fuck is even the point of slightly fancier humans?
Either make the races distinct for interesting roleplay/gameplay opportunities or don't put pointless shit in and just focus on humans.
>>
>>94385290
>mention centaurs whose most prominent feature was the rape of women and boys

>Diversity is so crucial
You know, when I was a kid I could relate to Samurai Jack and the Transformers from Beast Wars despite being a suburban white kid. What did these people watch? Did they have weird ass parents that only let them watch game shows or some shit?
>>
>>94384364

Or just go play Iron Claw, since that is what you wanted all along, furry.
>>
>>94384637
>how is he going to wear any of the cloths or armor thats found? how does he fit through doors for huge races and how does he not just punted away for small races?
Meaningless minutia. Most fantasy already ignores that stuff when it comes to the difference between dwarf/gnome/halflings vs humans.
>>
>>94387164
>Samurai Jack
Drawn like the Powerpuff Girl's dad, generic Western hero ethos
>Beast Wars
White as fuck cast, generic Star Trek ethos for heroes

No fucking wonder, you half-and-half looking mother fucker.
>>
>>94385310
When most people think of centaurs, they don't think about rape
>>
>>94388456
I dunno
Every time I think of centaurs I think of Professor Umbridge having a centaur train ran on her for the crime of being a mean teacher
>>
>>94387399
Ironclaw's a decent system. Also surprisingly lethal with its combat.
>>
>>94379582
>>"the setting has about 100+ intelligent races"
>>"only 5 are playable"
Yes, that helps those races actually feel distinct and interesting.
Making them playable requires them to be balanced and to not have as many alien aspects as NPC races can have.
But anyway, if you're a furfag, you can just reskin shit such as making halflings into mouse people (I think even the 2014 dmg had suggestions like that).
>>
>>94388489
The rape shit never made any sense for Harry Potter, it's only people drawing from mythology when Harry Potter centaurs were their own thing.
Might as well compare Dobby with Legolas.
>>
>>94379582
How do you actually implement a completely inhuman race as playable? And I don't mean something like centaurs. I mean really weird stuff like >>94381550
>>
You don't need 100+ races in the first place, but all of them looking human really is lame as fuck. If I wanted to engage in a humans focused setting I would not be bothering with fantasy in the first place. I see and deal with more than enough humans day to day.
>>
>>94389479
I mean... that race isn't actually that hard to make function, it'd just be annoying meme shit like d&d kenku
>>
>>94389595
>it'd just be annoying meme shit like d&d kenku
The 1st thing I saw while googling for "kenku" refers to them being humanoid. How do you deal with a quadripedal player character?
>>
>>94384717
Anyone wanna stat a race of jumping cactus?
I feel like they should have high charisma and high agility.
Shit dex and normal strength.
>>
>>94379582
If the majority of race options are just Humans but extra parts just make them Human and make the extra parts a background thing.

I swear, it's like trying to reconcile why you have werewolves when wolf-people exist as well.

If their end goal is to make us stop hating trannies and kikes, isn't them shitting up the internet only going to make us hate them even more?
>>
>>94385310
Rape is just standard in all greek myth, nobody with sense inherently associates centaurs with rape. There's not actually even that much to associate them with admittedly, at best people remember Hercules' archery teacher being a centaur.
>>
>>94384637
>how is he going to wear any of the cloths or armor thats found?
By that logic the most of the armor and clothing players find shouldn't find them either unless resized, which costs extra. At which point you can just introduce blacksmiths that can resize/modify for any race or magic items that shapeshift to fit the user.
>how does he fit through doors for huge races
Guess he doesn't, but it's not exactly hard to set up a game where being huge doesn't lock you out of participation.
>how does he not just punted away for small races?
Pixies, gnomes, dwarves, halflings, etc - those have long since been staples of fantasy systems. This has been a non-issue for half a century.
>>
>>94392175
Actual liberals want you to stop hating trannies and kikes. Governments and corporations want you to hate trannies and kikes and liberals in order to distract you from real issues. It's not that complicated.
>>
>>94379582
The problem here is that your RPG system is inferior. Get one where you can play all 100+ races.

All market research and studies ever seem to produce is an inexorable dumbing down of a product to try and make it accessible to the "but I ate breakfast this morning" crowd and ruining it for everyone else with a functioning brain.

>Verification not required.
>>
>>94395583
Creative, intelligent or even just passionate people have no use for market research, they just make what they want to make. Market research is a tool for soulless husks who are only involved to make money.
>>
>>94381422
I think there is an appetite for nonhumanoid characters that is underrated by this sort of analysis. Films like Brave Little Toaster, Air Bud, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Lady and the Tramp, Fox and the Hound, etc; supporting cast like the tachikoma, R2D2, Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill, all demonstrate that people can love nonhumanoid characters.

I do think that it's much less than people like humanoid characters, but there's a difference between that and 0.
>>
>>94379582
>are people that uncreative and lazy?
He asked, while posting stale bait older than he himself
>>
>>94395643
Doing at least some market research is sensible because even creatives have to acknowledge the financial realities of what they're doing - especially if they've got a fair chunk of investment they need to recoup - but the amount of companies that used to put out good stuff becoming completely enslaved to it and pumping out lowest common denominator slop is just depressing.

>>

>>94399655
Market research is most valuable when you're using it to fine tune a vision you already have. It's terrible for answering the question "should I make something familiar or fantastical?" and better for answering "I made this, is it as fantastical as I was shooting for?" That said you need to take all feedback with salt and figure out where it's coming from. That whole ford quote about faster horses and all.

Play D&D 3.5e.
If it has an LA that's not -, it's fair game, as long as your group is up for that, of course.
Also, read Savage Species.
