This is going to be an inexact question, but...Are there any gritty games that properly capture the attitude of stuff like old sword and sorcery novels, or grim fantasy in general?
You know, savage adventure like Conan, Elric, Kull and so on. Back before all the rough edges to stuff were sanded off, I guess.
Increasingly, it just feels like a lot of settings are too postmodern, with similarly modern values.

Any OSR hack, Barbarians of Lemuria, Conan 2d20, a generic system of your choice.

I'll check out the second one, thanks. Greatly appreciated.

Seconding Barbarians of Lemuria, the definitive sword & sorcery game. French edition had some amazing art and original adventure; I think they had plan to edit them in english
At a con; I got to try out the new Conan Monolith system, which was pretty good

Where is it for sale? It's not on Drivethru.

Thirdening Barbs of Lemuria I guess.
Played a slightly homebrewed campaign with a different Sword&sorcery setting for a good two years.
Probably my most successful campaign ever.
It was getting into some sketchy balancing issues at the end of these two years when PC powerlevels increased but it definitely was a joy to run.
Setup and character creation is super easy and you should get your adventure going instantly.

Honor&intrigue is an RPG that also uses the same ruleset so if you are searching for even more homebrew meterial that is something you can look out for.

H+I also has fewer problems with PCs growing too strong, too. You could reuse most of its rules in s&s.

seems like they did a kickstarter not too long ago and people are already getting the books physically

their english website doesn't seem up do date, but i guess that it's where theyll put the pdf for sale; the french one are worth 10 euros, which is a pretty fair price compared to other ttrpg pdfs. With 4 books (1 core, 2 adventure compilation, 1 campaign) it would be a very good pricing

Hyperborea is one I've played that has that kind of setting. Didn't get too far with it due to scheduling issues but I enjoyed it.

There is also the Sword and Sorcery Codex, for eEverywhen, which is itself the generic version of BoL. That might seem roundabout, but the Codex has some extra rules that make it more all inclusive of the genre.

Plus a couple of alright adventures to boot. There are boons and flaws in it that will work with other BoL derived systems, as well.

It's obscure, but check out "Shadow, Sword, and Spell". It's a 2d12 roll under stat + skill classless game geared toward a swords & sorcery feel.

Mythras I think gets the best at it, then barbarians of lemuria and OSR stuff.
