Dwarves typically, obviously, traditionally, are a hyper-masculine race of basically-all-dudes. It's fun, it's beloved, but what if we looked at the rarely-delved facet of what Dwaven Women are like? Whether or not they have beards, what gender-roles dwarven society assigns its members, what the life of the average dwarfette is like, how other peoples perceive dwarven sexuality and gender? This thread is for specifically discussing just that.

>It depends on the setting!!1one!
This is about YOUR personal tastes, preferences, and beliefs. Obviously.
>They don't exist/They're indistinguishable
I see your take and respect it, but it doesn't add much to the conversation.
>There's a thread up for this/I want to coom
We all know that other thread is for masturbating over fantasy women, as is their god-given right. This thread is for (attempting) to discuss the topic of specifically *dwarven* women are like beyond just sexuality (although if you have an idea about say, what halfling women would be thought of in a dwarven context, or an earnest take on dwarfette sex-life, go for it.)

If you're gonna steal, steal from the best, right?
I forget the name of that blond dwarf w/ Kabru's crew, but I actually prefer her looks ever-so-slightly to Namari's. But Dungeon Meshi gets the proportions and looks so right, I'm still shocked there wasn't a flood of Namari fanart.

Unrelated but I don't dig Dungeon Meshi's 'dwarves have less endurance than humans' idea, but other than that it's golden.

I like the pic in the OP.
Dwarves tend to be excellent craftsmen. I see no reason why women can't be given their own crafts. Such as tailoring, knitting and weaving. Maybe calligraphy and poems, some singing. Sometimes maybe they do brewing and cooking. Dwarves are usually traditional in their outlook, so you would think they have traditional view where men do hard labor such as smithing, building and mining.
>>
>>94394627
>This is about YOUR personal tastes, preferences, and beliefs
My dwarves are named for their connection to the giant, pure-blooded "parthenon dwellers", compared to which they are about one-third of the size, but as they stand, dwarves are about nine feet tall. They are statuesque, appearing to be made from smoothed marble or granite, and even in combat, they are rigid and hard to the touch. Yet, when they aren't fighting, they can feel as soft and pliable as any organic person.
There are more female dwarves than males, but they still have an androgynous social structure; both sexes hunt and gather and care for young seemingly equally, and they have no concepts of marriage or bonding. Dwarven children are raised communally, sometimes rarely ever seeing their birthparents, because as with all parthenon dwellers, they are "shaped from the same stone". It isn't that they're hive-minded, but they do have a form of collective consciousness, which also helps them maintain their population more mindfully. It helps that they subsist entirely off of magical energy, which they cumulate through routine meditation and drinking flowing water; they don't need to eat, and they don't need to make weapons, and their structures come from the slow and steady alchemical transmutation of the desert sands into their pillared structures, so there's no conflict over resources.
The creation of their children is similar to that of their structures, so sex is purely recreational for them, and despite being perpetually naked, their naughty bits only show when they're willing to have sex. Because the vast majority of races are small by comparison, they rarely have any sexual attraction to them (just as the larger parthenon dwellers have little sexual attraction to dwarves), but might agree to some "lip service" or hand action with curious adventurers. And because their seed/egg is infertile, there's no risk of unplanned parenthood on either end.

I adore it. I'm in the other camp for gender-roles where I interpret Dwarven conditions as so harsh, that their society has had gendered divisions of labor kind of sanded off in any but the most posh, comfortable settlements, with the exceptions of expecting parents being forcibly sheltered by their kin.
>>
>>94394737
In a vacuum, I like your idea and how you presented it, but at this point, why call them 'dwarves' at all? Isn't that just intellectual baggage at this point since they're so different than 'the baseline'?
>>
continued from >>94394737
Despite their inability to crossbreed through intercourse, it's still possible for a dwarf to make a child with a "flesh race"; the dwarf will encourage his/her partner to undergo the meditative state and offer the appropriate amount of magical energy along with a low risk amount of life energy, and the resulting child will be a "decoration", which is a race that stands roughly half the height of the average human, whose skin has the appearance and feel of porcelain. Decorations tend to have one male per ten females, and like to dress themselves up as dolls in elegant and flamboyant outfits. However, unless the adventurer adopts their decoration, it will be disowned by both dwarves and giants. Orphaned decorations aren't treated like outsiders when wandering the deserts, but are also not given the protection and sense of community, either. They're tolerated because of their ability to sense and warn against the presence of undead, and their especially effective capabilities to destroy the undead.
To this end, the more bold among the orphaned decorations will leave their desert birthplace behind, and seek out necropolis incursions and circle their outskirts, hunting down any undead that move outside its threshold with extreme prejudice.

>why call them 'dwarves'
Because they have a very similar physiology to the giants who dwarf them, much like the dwarves of typical fantasy have a similar physiology to the humans who dwarf them.
They don't call themselves dwarves, that's just a concession to abstraction made for easier reference.

Not That Anon, but any society still needs people making clothes, telling stories, and recording information. They literally *need* some of these things to function, and obviously the way they produce those things would still be dwarfy. It's like saying 'oh a human mining town? Isn't that a dwarf thing?'
Reductive thinking.

>I don't dig Dungeon Meshi's 'dwarves have less endurance than humans' idea
That's not a weakness dwarves have, it's a strength that humans have.
>>
>>94394803
I can see why, but dwarves don't wear armor all the time. They wear fabrics too, and it would make sense they would make them by their own. And when dwarves do it, they want to make it right, leading them having master tailors and shoemakers etc. And thos positions could be left for women. Then you have more men in mines, smithies and armies.

Obviously every society has people who focus in different needs.
I meant that those types of crafts don't really seem like they'd fit the standard dwarf "flavor", but rather they'd only keep them functional and view further perfectionism as just vapid.

As the other anon said, stamina and muscles aren't all the same. A blacksmith might be used to smashing things with his hammer all day, but he probably doesn't move around much, and will not automatically be good at running despite doing physical stuff all day.
Different types of muscles and different types of body shapes excel at different things.

If this thread has any interest in talking about game stuff: it could be a neat idea to have dwarves with a large HP/Wound pool, but being unable to wear the heaviest armor. Compared to maybe humans being able to wear any armor, but have relatively mediocre HP/Wounds. Different types of durability.

I guess that is one take on dwarves. Personally I don't think dwarves would do anything with attitude of "good enough", take pride in everything they do.

>Fit the Dwarf Flavor
If you're going out of your way to explore female/feminine sides of Dwarfdom, I would argue that comes with a certain degree of willing to reconsider or expand what fits that dwarfy flavor, more to the point:
Anything made by Dwarves should exhibit a dwarfy flavor. Either in their methods being designed to exhibit it, or the aesthetics or attitudes around such products fitting the bill.

Maybe Dwarves have bizarre livestock, or access to materials or methods of making clothes that seem exotic or weird. Is Dwarven beard/head hair a textile? Do they agree with you and delegate that kind of work to machines or 'clan tailors' that come from different cultures and get paid handsomely to do the job? Maybe dwarves have found a way to make cloth and thread out of metal or gemstones and have exotic textiles that exhibit bizarre properties?

TL'DR: try harder lmao

If we're talking about dorfs in the traditional sense, I like to think they're passionate and hardy people due to how much they love crafting, mining, and building. If allowed, dwarves seem like the kind of people that would stay up all night building gundam models. Following this train of thought, I guess that would mean dwarven women are tsunderes with non-dwarven men when it comes to romance. A human or halfling male would probably have to have a lot in common with a particular dwarven woman or share her deepest obsession.

My headcanon is that dwomen don't grow facial hair until they hit menopause around 100yo, after which they start to grow beard. Then it depends on the hold tradition what they do with it, more traditionalist holds braid them while the ones with more human/elven influence often shave it.

yeah, but all of this would feel extremely setting specific rather than a take that could be applied to dwarves in different settings.

>everyone thinks I'm copying
they're retarded
it's an extremely low effort take on female dwarves
hell irl women can grow beards, so it's not whatsoever a stretch that a fantasy race known for their beards had females growing them even more commonly
and "stay clean-shaven for cultural reasons" is an easy way to deal with an obvious consequence: nobody actually wants to see bearded women (other than as ridiculous freaks to laugh at)

>>
For me dwarves embody resilience, regardless of location or even culture. They are hardy and endure, maybe they lower their heads, or bend their knees, but they're hard to break completely. They will find a way to trudge forward and be among the last ones standing.
>>94394728
We could look at it this way: dwarves tend towards extremes, so the males are masculine, the females are feminine. That can be reflected in a number of ways in fashion, and the culture could very well be split into spaces and roles that are gender-locked, but it would be a situation like rome's matrons, where they are skilled and honoured as mistresses of their households rather than locked in the kitchen.
>>94395523
And it's not like it will stop the retards from stumbling in here and spamming their one liner as usual anyway. Sometimes they do it after a thread has been going on for days of rather decent back and forth.
>>
>>94394627
Traditionally, women are homemakers because putting pregnant women in a situation where they might be at serious risk of harm is a bad idea for maintaining your society, nor is it particularly efficient if you have any other serious task for them to perform. However, keeping women from any labor whatsoever isn't very pragmatic. Since dwarves are typically depicted as craftsmen, I imagine female dwarves are the backbone of a thriving cottage industry, producing goods for the household from materials brought in by the male family members. Dwarves have always been very masculine, and dwarves are typically portrayed as master masons and smiths, so I see male dwarves being very focused on industries that produce very long lasting, durable products. Meanwhile, I could see female dwarves getting roles that produce less durable, less long-lasting products, such as food, clothing, writing, et cetera. With the typical distance between dwarven holdings and everywhere else, this keeps the mystery of dwarven women and their happenings to outsiders, as these goods likely wouldn't survive the trip abroad/be very appealing to outsiders.
Likely speaking, the average dwarfette is taught by her mother or extended family in some homemaking tradition or practical skill relating to a homemaking tradition from a young age, the same way a male dwarf might be taught. Eventually, she probably ends up in an arranged marriage with whomever her parents could find that holds sufficient breeding and isn't a rival/sworn enemy of her clan/immediate family. There she ends up fulfilling her wifely duties in homemaking and cottage industry, produces some amount of children, teaches the girls among those children her tricks to life, then after a long life, gracefully expires in her home surrounded by friends and loved ones.

(cont.)
Since dwarfettes traditionally don't engage with more dangerous industry, likely outsiders never see female dwarves outside their homes. While certainly metropolitan areas might have a female dwarven population, the vast majority won't see any, since they have little reason to go traveling. With the long lives of dwarves and how traditionally isolationist they are, it is not completely absurd that the uninformed might assume that dwarves just sprung forth from the ground, since they've never seen a female dwarf. While the wiser certainly would be aware of the concept, finding an non-dwarven individual who has seen a dwarven female is unlikely.

I would stat it around endurance, while dorfs can easily fight all day in heavy armor humans with their endurance can run in medium armor much longer than dorfs and elves, though elves are much faster and could endure more in lighter armor.
>>
In my setting dorfs embody the aesthetic of art deco. Smooth lines that are superfluous but oddly don’t add weight to items or armor.
The female dorfs are renowned for their ability to make jewelry which they send to orks for enchanting.
Female dorfs are also flaxen haired nearest to the entrances and fiery red for those who dwell in the depths of the mountain.
They have a Scottish brogue and ferment alcohol from the fungal growths that they help cultivate in their deep farms.
That same fungus has metallic bristles that glow a purple hew and is woven to make clothing which acts as a natural light source for the mines that cannot allow light.
Dorf women are fiercely monogamous and each child is marked with a new braid in their hair.
While they often stay within their deep kingdoms, they have been known to find husbands within human society and consider any person who beats them in their 3 passions a de facto husband.
Arm wrestling, drinking, and mountain climbing.

Giant cave spider web makes a great textile, but since they're near impossible to raise in a dwarven hold, dwarves instead hunt for it in the deep perilous caves. Finding a recently abandoned nest is rare, but yields a trove of valuble yet delicate material. More daring dwarves will try to cut up traps a spider has laid when they're not around, and carry the silk home.

For a more reliable option, dwarves may have domesticated a small creatures thread producing creature, similar to IRL silk worms. If you think it makes the world more fantastical, maybe they have discovered a worm that drinks oil or eats shale powder to later in it's life cycle produce a cocoon made of a material similar to plastic. Or if you think that's lame, don't do that, and have worms that eat mushroom to make cacoons of normal silk.

Maybe there are ways to make textiles from cave moss too, but I'm out of ideas. Of course all dwarven fabric would be dyed with mineral pigments. Even if they had access to organic dyes, no dwarf would appreciate a blue made from crushed flowers or an orange from tree bark as much as a refined ultramarine or cadmium extracted from ore. Sure, such dyes may be a little toxic, but never enough to harm a dwarf.

>In rigidly ordered Fortress life, most dwarves have very comparable childhoods.
>Every child is sponsored from their family on a 'grand tour', where over the course of their 50-year childhood and early adolescence they will work in near-every role of Dwarven life, unless a family is oathbound to provide a specific kind of dwarf to the fortress - as is the case with most of the priesthood and the fortresses craftsmen, who begin learning as soon as they can walk.
>Starting with being little more than extra hands in the stone-cut farmlands and ending with a stint in the militia, regardless of gender.
>They are then released to take the oaths and obligations that would start their careers. From warrior to artisan to janitor to even the whores, each profession has families and clans specializing in it, with their own long lines of ancestor-saints and complex rituals to honor the highs and lows of the job.
>dwarven boys stereotypically imagine themselves as future prospectors, striking it rich, or powerful warriors in the Fortresses Rangers, going far and wide on grand journeys across the overworld on behalf of their King.
>Dwarven girls stereotypically imagine themselves as future Shieldmaidens, traveling the tangle of routes beneath the Earth in the Dwarven homelands as crusading warrior-priestesses, defending the weak and helping the most desperate.

Dark Iron dwarves are from Warcraft, one of the few halfway decent things about the setting.
>>
I think female dwarves should be stocky, practical tomboys.
Should still be hot.

The whole housewife thing does fit the traditional vibe that dwarves have, but honestly I feel female dwarves bring too domestic would make them seem too much like hobbits.
Female dwarves would still be devoted mothers, but maybe a bit "tiger mom" types.
>>
>>94401338
I don't really know anything about the setting, but I do like their weird elves with massive ears, eyebrows and weird eyes.
Certainly better than just humans with pointy ears.

But from googling dark iron dwarves, they do seem pretty cool.

Anon it's a good take-
-with the exception that they're one end of the spectrum. I need buxom, extremely feminine women who as a result of dwarven autism, are also into war and oaths and beer on the other end.
They'd play off each other well. I can imagine them trying out the others preferred spirit (swapping Jammy Fungal Wine for Dark Cave-wheat Beer) and completely fucking up the booze-math and getting embarrassingly hammered.

No, I thought it was more that DM dwarf women maybe grew slightly more facial hair than other races, but it was still pretty thin and weak. Like, the example they give of an unshaven dwarf woman was a hag with some sparse hairs or something.

The Nobility: They never leave the house without servants, shroud their faces in great cloaks of all types of fabrics and dorn so many layers of clothing that it becomes hard to move without aid. They control the Husband's finances and spending and have some control over investments but other then that, they spend most of the day at home, using aids to carry out issues of their husbands. The peasants claim it's a bad day to cross a noble woman in the streets.

The Peasants: Almost identical to their male counterparts. They take up trade in all forms often assisting their household in the business in any way they can. Lowborn Dwarves can hardly take the leisure to refuse work and even if they could, their pride won't let them. If they are in a smithy they will make nails and axes. If they work in an armory, they will sew on the scales and draw out iron for mailles. If they are farmers, they will toil away backs hunched right next to their husbands.

Untouchables: These Dwarven women are not even worth discussing. Their entire clans do not pay taxes and are unregistered against the national peasant's array of year 3401. They can not be tracked, their men can't be levied, and they do not farm. The Untouchables are worthless raiders, tracking across the lands like petty rangers killing and looting goblins for the same scraps of food. They do not follow the customs of our ancestors. Can they really be considered Dwarves?

My dwarves's men and women are generally difficult to distinguish from one another. All Dwarves are workaholics to the point where it's some kind of weird compulsion. They form entire societies around weird, overcomplicated engineering projects. It's great they'll do this for your civilization for free, but it's bad once you realize Dwarven Engineering is more advanced but requires more maintenance than most things. It's not built to last, it's built to be fussed over, and that's how most Dwarves like it. They like having a purpose, and as long as they have a Job that gives them Purpose, they don't age or die. It might seem a dreary existence to those who aren't Dwarves - wake up, work all day, go to the tavern/forum place and drink and laugh and sing songs about how much spiders fucking suck and then it's off to bed to repeat the same process for eternity(hopefully) but they love it. The women find their own little jobs too and it's not split into men's work or women's work or whatever.
>>
>>94407251

fantasy worlds already have lots of races, no need to make them all have coombait shit.

>The women find their own little jobs too and it's not split into men's work or women's work or whatever.
indeed, autism is in the brain, women can just be autistic for different topics although they can still be dwarf topics.
(inb4 fags who believes women can't be truly autistic but just fake uguu am I kawaii shit: you can find the obsessed retard type of autism in several fandoms, and you can find the more productive and healthy autism in crafts such as those involving textiles)

Mind you, the downside is that if a dwarf, especially the "girthegn" or "workleader" of a "kharmgir" or "work-home"(dwarven colony) is killed, and there's nobody to replace them, then the colony starts to die off as shit just sort of cascade fails across the entire project, all of the dwarves losing immortality and dying off within 3-6 months. Everything falls apart, and the final dwarf youths become their deathguard, turning the area into a giant mausoleum and them retaining a measure o f immortality, becoming undead revenants.

Now imagine you're the !roman empire and !hannibal has just invaded. He's crossing the alps, and your men run into these dwarves. They basically seemingly enslave themselves to your empire and build you roads, aqueducts, fortresses, everything. This makes slavery a point of philosophy for your empire for the next couple hundred years - there are literal slave races that exist for this reason, and your roman ass will do whatever it takes to keep this lie going.

Seems like a bit of a castle of sand, don't it?
>>
>>94401361
Moira the woman who was 'kidnapped' by the Dark Iron king became their ruler and reintegrated them into Dwarven society after classic. The dwarven clans united together again and they're now part of the alliance
>>
>>94395646
Dwarfs live in/on mountains, so montane people. Their livestock would be goats, maybe big enough to ride and raid flat landers. They will use horned helmets, make goated cheese, make some kumis or some shit, cashmere and leather. Humans will say the goats are their wives because of that one dwarf everybody knows about and because the goats are bearded.

Nah, minor sideburns that are an extension of soft / wavy scalp hair rather than beard bristles (like >>94402744 has) can be cute too. I like it too since it implies a unisex utility to beards rather than the race having that characteristic "just because". Since light and echo-free communication isn't guaranteed down there braids and beads would be a great way to establish identity and affiliation with nothing but a touch.

Also since I tend to prefer >>94408886 crossed with star nosed moles over vanilla short humans the beards can take on way more varied roles: whiskers to measure passages, lichen substrate which senses chemical changes, alco-sponge whose fumes sterilise spore-laden breaths...

Honestly I imagine subterraneans as a whole skewing to extreme sexual dimorphism or relative indistinguishability. Trudvang does great hive-dwarves but otherwise the "which ones are women?" gag is pretty fun overall.
