What are your system recommendations for a fantasy game with a better combat/magic system than D&D?
>>94420281D&D before 5e
>>94420281Depends on what you want. Do you want a crunchy numbers game with lots of depth or something more rules light and theatrical. Honestly just play anything besides D&D and it will be immensely better. Hell make your own system and it will probably turn out better then whatever the WoTC is doing.
>>94420310>"honestly">immediately liesWow, our resident worst troll really is shameless.
>>94420341>GURPSNo. Stop.
>>94420281Earthdawn.
>>94420353You know you want it, babyboy
>>94420301It's better than 5e but it's still shit (at least 2e and 3e/3.5e)
>>94420281All answers to this will be subjective, but I think giving 13th Age a whirl isn't the worst choice.
>>94420281>dungeon crawling gritty explorationInto the Odd. >epic adventure across a fantastical world to triumph over adversity and evil Fellowship. Band of Blades if you want Black Company instead. >Peaky Blinders Steampunk AdventureBlades in the Dark>EPIC AVENGERS ADVENTUREDungeon World. >Skirmish warband combat with light RPG En Garde! for lighter rules, Dolorous Stroke for more granular fiddly stuff or mordhime honestly.
>>94420281My system that I made to suit my tastes, that spits in the face of most of what /tg/ likes because you faggots have shit taste.
>>94420485>Recommend Like for others anon. Post your shitbrew.
>>94420498Last time I did all /tg/ did was whine about the fact I don't immediately dump 300 pages of autistic rules that crunch harder than a bucket of glass.
>>94420310>Do you want a crunchy numbers game with lots of depth or something more rules light and theatrical.I want bothI want theatrical condensed crunchiness with a lot of depth
>>94420605Weird. Last homebrew I saw posted was 200+ pages of autism. Post it coward.
>>94420643TORCH BARER IT IS
>>94420281Ironclaw.
>>94420605There are people on /tg/ who will whine about anything.
>>94420281>What are your system recommendations for a fantasy game with a better combat/magic system than D&D?That's most of them. So be more specific and tell me what it is, in detail, you're looking for and looking to avoid. Even if that's just things you think you may or may not like.
>>94420746True.>>94420703Fine, I'm still working on an extra doc with retraining rules (Not core, because I want people to think about their choices when playing) as well as new options in Perks (think Feats from D&Dfinder). Mind, I made this for my own use - it's made to suit what I want out of a fantasy RPG.https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cI5OOT9cxjvHyTIwYd74CttJ8NsEJY1-?usp=sharing
I like Savage Worlds
Worlds Without Number (fantasy)Stars Without Number (scifi)>very easy to onboard players who've played D&D>skill system stolen from Traveler>lethal combat; flexibility is emphasized over balance>wizards have an actual niche instead of being able to do everything
>>94420719Fuck, I totally forgot about Ironclaw. So long as OP can stomach talking cartoon animals in the vein of Disney's Robin Hood, it's an excellent choice. Just remember to fight smart and don't count on big buckets of HP to save your character.
>>94421070I was going to recommend Worlds but thought it too close to older DnD editions. Still looks to be worth a try.
>>94420876I should note, casters are being watched. I plan to run this with my usual group in the future to playtest when a timeslot opens up. My concern is that they're a bit lacking. I'm also watching HP in general since man damage starts high (and doesn't really get much higher as the game goes on) and hp starts low.
>>94420281Honor + Intrigue using the Tome of Intriguing Options assuming you dislike the magic system in core.
>>94420281Genesys.
>>94420281Literally any of them.
>>94421033Do you use any supplements, or just the base rules?
>>94421272What's so great about Genesys?
>>94420281>better combatGURPS.>magic systemWHFR.
>>94421384It seems a bit complex but is actually fairly straight-forward. You roll some dice based on your attributes in a skill, roll some equivalent but opposite dice to oppose it, then tally up success/failure and advantage/disadvantage. Having more successes means you "succeed" or "hit" in combat, and more means a better job. Advantage allows you to do things like gain boosts, reduce strain, disarm opponents, and critically hit, which is rolled on a table of varying effects. Conversely disadvantage can be used by the opponent (or yourself, when you are the target) to cause all sorts of negatives. It's a lot more fluid than D&D, and relies on a more nebulous range system than just necessitating a grid.
>>94421070Genuinely one of my favorites, easy to run and it's easy to convert most D&D shit over to, even 5e stuff if you grab its 3rd party bestiary.>>94421234Did this for a mini-campaign and it was honestly really engaging and tactical despite me half-assing my prep and constantly reskinning from the bestiary.
>>94421498These dice are dumb. Any game that forces its own proprietary non-established dice is dumb. Standard polyhedral set is annoying enough, anything beyond that is just pretentious.
>>94420281>with a better combat/magic system than D&D?There aren’t any. There are some that do combat better, but their magic is worse. There are some that do magic better, but their combat is worse. There are some that do both worse. But there are none that do both better - just different. Better in some areas, worse in others.
>>94421545Remarkably, terminally subjective, in that it lacks any awareness of that fact.
>>94421543Eh, I just use a dice bot, works out fine.
>>94420310spbp
>>94420485I belive you.
>>94420281I've made one that works better for me.Maybe you can do something like that for yourself.
>>94421526H+I's maneuver system is honestly great. And it's greatly helped because all of your primary stats are valuable in some form of combat.
>>94420876Oh. Its this one again. lol. You think people didn't like it because it didn't have 300+ pages of crunch? You really missed the entire point. Stop saying inane shit like >mind, I made this for my own use - it's made to suit what I want out of a fantasy RPG.if you're coming into a thread asking for recommendations you egotistical retard. If you have an actual recommendations someone can use, do that, if you have shit like this you want to vague book about fuck off.
>>94421670They made one. Its terrible. Go check it out.
>>94421716This sort of shit is insipid limp dick garbage. If you have a suggestion of use present it. If you just have >neiner neiner look at me be proud enough of your shitbrew to post it.
Barbarians of Lemuria/Everywhen.
>>94420281Savage WorldsShadow of the Demon LordGenesysAnybody who recommends a White Wolf system or Shadowrun can be written off as a total retard. Those games have better settings and skill resolution but are total shit for combat.
>>94420310>Playing anything other than D&D is betterMany systems are objectively worse in a lot of ways.
>>94421543Hilarious to me when people bitch about buying dice for an RPG when odds are they had to buy dice to play ANY RPG before Genesys.
>>94422520It's especially bad because the whole reason for the dice in Genesys was the game being ENTIRELY different from a fundamental standpoint compared to everything else, so it wasn't a heartbreaker, a modded version of X, but legitimate new kind of game and system that works amazingly well.It also has free dice rollers for the broke players and people still bitch about the dice. May they forever swim in nothing but 5e based content in perpetuity.
>>94420281Shadowdark and DCC, they are fun deadly and when your plan works it feels really good.
>>94422507This. BESM is absolutely the worst shit I've ever played. HERO system is up there too, bloated trash.
>>94422110>>94422106Oh hey it's the illiterate retard who had nothing to say about the system mechanically and just whined because his illiterate ass had to read words to understand the mechanics of the system.
>>94420643Exalted
>>94422106I gave him plenty of feedback last time. If anything his issue isn't that he doesn't have enough crunch. It's that he has too much extraneous bullshit that seems to conflict with other parts of the game that he's added.
>>94420281Prowlers and paragons
>>94421545There has never been a game that fails to do both better.
>>94422502What's so great about Shadow of the Demon Lord? And is Shadow of the Weird Wizard any different?
>>94422729nothing, they're both ass
>>94422729SotDL has some upsides with its path system for classes, and WW makes some tweaks to the magic rules. From my experience, SotDL actually delivers on 5e's promises of being a simpler streamlined fantasy game. The bigger point of contention is the base setting, which is why Weird Wizard was made address that with something more generic.
>>94422520>>94422553>buy polyhedral dice for an rpg>can use them for nearly any other rpg>genesys dice are proprietary, ugly as fuck, and color reliant pieces of garbage that can only be used for genesysDisingenuous goobers
>>94421033Me too. Admittedly, the combat can't be incredibly swingy.>>94421372I tend to write my own additional rules to suit each campaign.
>>94422823Like those anons said, you deserve everything you are stuck with.
>>94422729>What's so great about Shadow of the Demon Lord? https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/88253815/#q88257270>And is Shadow of the Weird Wizard any different?https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/93926798/#q93960631
