I'm down to GM something. The things I have ready to go are D&D, Mutant Future (as a game of Mortal Kombat) or VtM. Could also have Stars Without Number ready to go shortly.

I'd be up for starting this weekend and playing on Tabletop Simulator over discord voice. If enough folks are interested, I'll run one including for new people. Drop a dicord and what you're interested in and if we get 3-5 let's do it. I can pull up-to 5 other players, depending on what folks are interested in. We already have a regular Wednesday night game, but I have more than just what we're playing prepped and I'd like to run one.

Attached is the overview. My group is no-longer in the same city, so we're resigned to Tabletop Simulator. It's not bad.

Mutant Future is an OSR/retclone of Gamma World. The no-art-edition is free on drivethrurpg. It's mostly just d20 with hitpoints being static (almost everyone starts with Constitution in D6 hit points) and mutant powers (some good, some bad).

Game is set post MK11. So there are lots of worlds and this one had the invasion of Earthrealm, which failed, resulting in civil war in Outworld (ongoing) and things like the Special Forces back on Earth. Players are hired by an Earthrealm nation to locate means of travelling between Realms.

Dungeon delving, politics, exploration and fighting, oh my!

Might require some getting used to, my spoken english gets rusty. I'd rather use text honestly.

The best filter for players is to see how they act and interact in the wild. If you’re a GM who puts hours into prep and effort into running the game you want players who are a good fit and players who you enjoy spending time with.
If you’re rejected from 99 games, I would examine the constant between all of those games.

>>
>>94439531
It's just the next form of the socialization forum. It can and will replace other avenues, otherwise we'd all still be playing games via snail-mail, MUD, irc, etc. Wanting to participate in only those is your prerogative, of course, but there is a reason why these threads rarely get made, and are becoming more and more dead. Times are always changing.
>>
>>94439738
Just because you give examples of other things that have gotten better over time doesn't mean the thing you like is therefore an improvement. Discord is a massive downgrade from gamefinder threads. But that's alright. You'll be contained, we'll have our threads, everyone is happy.
>>
>>94439990
The same can be said about what you like though, it's a moot point. It's also reductive when you could be utilizing more mediums that people are using more and more. Still, I understand the culture on 4chan has changed drastically even from just six to eight years ago, but I think it's worthwhile to reach out even if it takes more time to find people here.
>>
>>94439738
The times changed nearly half a decade ago. These threads went to shit long before the Gamefinder discord started up, way back in the days of TheUltimateFiction, Touhoufag, Dorian, and the Bastardland skype group.

At the end of the day, having a place where people talk and form a community just is objectively better for finding games, because it gives you an opportunity to actually see who you're inviting and screen people better. This is a hobby where you are spending large amounts of time with other people. Vetting is important.
>>
>>94440181
>At the end of the day, having a place where people talk and form a community just is objectively better for finding games,
The thing is, nobody worthwhile is going to just sit in a chat room on the off hope that someone will eventually form a group to play. They already have friends and other hobbies to spend their time on. It's better to know someone before inviting them to a game, but you're going to severely cap the quality of player you get, since most people will be NEETs with limited relationships. In my experience just churning through 10-15 people over the course of a couple of months is better, since you can find people who fit much more easily and like half of the ones who don't are so autistic they sperg out immediately, often during the first messages, and never see the game at all.
My current game was started in gamefinder threads, and we've all met IRL and known each other for years now. We also had more than remained come and go quickly or never make it to a session. Not a single one of us has ever used a gamefinder discord, and asking nobody said they would either.
>>
>>94435092
why would I want to go to a discord dictate by gay furry?
>>
>>94440280
I've had a very similar experience using Discord, from following the link years ago in these very threads, even. The various forms of meeting worthwhile people can absolutely exist in the same sphere, I'd argue it's necessary to prevent this fading, effort intensive hobby from being completely left behind as we have to compete with more and more instant gratification from entertainment.

I'm glad to see other people shit on these servers. They are sizeable enough that I get a good amount of applicants from them and have gotten good players through these servers since 2020, but never the regulars. I think cliques are inevitable, its human nature but the ones here are particularly insufferable and mean. Lewd Dice Shenanigans is decent. Erotic Gnome Finder should be avoided. EGF has porn nazi mods, and they frequently say "who are you?" to newfags who just try and contribute to conversation. Mods act like mini celebrities and everyone has to suck their dick or get warns till banned.

These people have some kind of delusion that you **have** to nolife the server to have fun and get into good games. Despite it being obvious that most server members have 0 interaction outside of posting game ads/player ads. Evidently the regulars don't play all that much in each other's games and for all that "getting to know each other" I've recalled quite a few spats between regulars ghosting one another. I treat these servers like extended /tg/ threads with LFGs attached. Conversation meanders between useless and mildly interesting, sometimes there is art to steal.
>>
>>94441040
Sometimes your friends don't like every single thing you do. Or there's issues with time commitments, or a variety of other things.
Someone with no friends is a huge red flag though.
>>
>>94441165
This is true of them, but there are people working to change this sort of thing in some servers. People will always have fights when they're invested in each other, at some point. I'm glad the threads have worked out for you, though.

I'm honestly kind of flabbergasted that IRC isn't used more these days. Even the old IRC communities have all died, and it makes no sense to me. IRC still works, and it filters out all the horrible normies by default. If we went back to using IRC, we could have the old internet communities back in a flash.
>>
>>94447403
>it filters out all the horrible normies by default
This. Going to discord looking for decent sessions is like turning a garbage can upside down looking for gold. There were very good chatrooms from this board where you could set up with other GMs and players a few years ago for 5e or whatever but now it's awfully rare.
>>

Serious question, how do you find random games online? I've only ever found one, it was decent, but the GM ghosted us after about 6 months of playing. Only luck I ever have putting a game together is with people I already know.
>>

Gamefinder threads have been best for me.
I've also just taken random online friends from vidya and pulled them into TTRPGs before, with mixed success.
I've never seen success on Roll20 or the like, but I'm sure if you're dedicated enough or have low enough standards its achievable.

Playing tabletop shit online seems soulless. Why not get some actual friends?

Can confirm EGF has extremely petty catty mods who have hair trigger tempers.
>>
Fellow GMs, how hard is it to run for two groups in one week?
>>
>>94477842
My current group are a channel on Discord that coalesced around Overwatch. One day I asked if anyone would wanna play D&D. Had a hell of a lot of takers and we've been playing weekly for 9 months or so. Another group also runs, now, because we couldn't fit everyone who wanted in (I'm not comfortable running a table over 5 players).

>>94478824
It's not bad, honestly. I use tabletop simulator. We have cameras on and use voice. It's not as good as in-person, but it's pretty good. And it does have some advantages because of how easy it is to pull in resources like maps and minis.

>>94480396
You're going to eventually get buried under trying to write for two sessions a week. You'll try to compensate by winging more and the result will be both games petering out.
>>
>>94480452
That's what I feared. I think if I ran a single oneshot for the second group it would run okay but I wouldn't risk it for more than a few weeks, and not if I'm using something I didn't make well in advance.
>>
>>94480477
A one shot you could pull off if you're at that high point of creativity and investment. I doubt it's just me who goes through cycles where I'm writing and wanna run games, to where I'm executing on what I'd prepped, to weeks where I'm dreading the game and scrambling to prep, to those burnout weeks where you figure "fuck it I'll just wing it." I, at least, would end up in longer periods of "fuck it."

Playing online is a different experience. I play with IRL friends but prefer online because it allows for a lot of different things.
Remember when Hearthstone came out and it was neat to see all the new mechanics that could be added in a video game card game that were impossible to do with a physical one?
It's like that.
Perfect LoS and exploration (no uncovering the map with paper awkwardly), whispers where the other players sit there and wonder while you drag the guy into another room, easily incorporated art and complex battlemaps, automatic scene-based music and sound effects on particular actions, and more. Not to mention the time saved rolling and bookkeeping with macros and digital character sheets.
It ends up being more work for the GM to make use of all the features, but a much better experience overall IMO. If you're lazy GMing then it's probably better to just be IRL.

>>94480396
Pretty hard. The only reason I'm able to do so in comfort currently is one game is more experimental/loosey goosey, and the other is completely prepared for ahead of time. EVERYTHING.

Lewd Dice Shenanigans and Erotic Gnome Finder are both mostly rightish in politics, although you're asked to keep it to certain channels.

Just to play devil's advocate, there is a use for such a channel: it allows users to add those usernames to their blacklists.

Some of us are past our early 20s which is the last time people can still do that, you'll understand when you grow up.

Yeah getting together with kids and jobs on weeknights is just fucking hard. Even when we can, some people are just too fucking tired or wrapped up in home life to be into it. We play on tabletop simulator, but still play in person on the rare weekend we can go camping.
>>
>>94491690
Both are tumblr diaspora masquerading as /tg/. You choose LDS if you're a furry or ponyfucker, or EGF if you're the more regular sort of sex pest. In both you'll find no shortage of trannies, attention whores, leftypols and reddit mods.

Pretty much this + people move as life happens, but the game doesn't have to die.
In the case of my group, it does help that we have something like 7 players and the group has a policy that the DM + 3 players is enough to get a session going.
Since my buddy and I joined this group we've been gaming pretty consistently, even twice a week sometimes.
Blessed be the likes of Roll20.

Has anyone ever run or played in a play-by-post type game from one of these?
>>
>>94512848
It'd be harder to say I haven't. Play by post is all the rage on discord these days.
>>
>>94512848
>>94512901
Man, I used to love dumb roleplay forums back in like 2004.

I wish I knew how to find something like this today - The social anxiety is too extreme to even use mic in Discord.
>>
>>94513848
A roleplaying forum was different because only a dedicated freak would ever even go there. Discord pbp people join and then just fucking mute the server until the gm @'s them to post and then they're all like "uhhh i dont know". Never mind that they're almost kind of right to react that way when most of the time GMs set the scenes with complete dud prompts that leave even the most active and introspective posters standing around with their limp dick out trying to figure out how to get things moving.

Absolutely wretched format! Never get tricked into playing in one!
