>Early 40k: campy 80's power metal>mid 40k: grimdark heavy metal>modern 40k: tacticool nobledarkIn another decade there will be a tonal shift in the vibes of the setting. MAybe we might go back to grimdark, or we take a hard turn into noble bright. Or we hit peak bizarro and 40k ends up being wacky camp.
>Maybe we might go back to grimdark, or we take a hard turn into noble bright.I'm afraid neither of those will be the case, we're going grimclusive.
>>94423388Hardly, I think we're moving away from grimdark. Shit like space marine 2, votann and brightly lit sci Fi is what we're heading towards. Where it's less about the crushing futility of humanity's situation and more like star wars.
>>94423362Some things are nice additions. I like some of the newer factions and what they did with them. Other things are pants on head stupid and they’ve ruined multiple characters.Tbf though, I haven’t cared or followed closely since 5th edition.
As a rule, everything only ever gets worse.
>>94423362>in another decade No one tell him.
>>94423402Rogue trader didn't shy away from the grimdark however so there is evidence that people still like the grimdarkness of the setting
Indifferent. I've given up on GW's fluff and will just use whatever parts of it I like while ignoring the rest.
>>94423362>Early 40k: campy 80's power metal>mid 40k: grimdark heavy metal>modern 40k: tacticool nobledarkAll these are wrong and just outs you as a shallow secondary feeding on youtubers
>>94423564I don't know if calling Rogue Trader campy is exactly wrong.
The setting taking itself seriously was the second worst thing to happen to it narratively. The worst mechanically was the 'no rules, no models' mandate post lawsuit
>post-modern 40k: tactidumb ironic-dark
>>94423564Yeah retard? Wanna run that by me again?
>>94423780Borderlands
>>94424683you know GW didn't make this right
>>94423647Also the shitty renames of everything. Man that lawsuit is the biggest blight on warhammer by far
Midhammer was the kino highpoint of the entire franchise, nobody cares or remembers oldhammer and nobody of taste plays nuhammer.
>>94424737>2010>midhammerZoomers should not be allowed to post
>>94423362I'm fine with every one of those having its place in the setting, I just wish they didn't remove the grit. Everything just seems so smoothed out and made-presentable, even the "grimy" artwork in the codices is toned down from what it used to be. I know it's supposed to be about inclusion and marketability, but having fun is marketable enough on its own. I've never picked up a game with the thought of "Oh, look, the corporation is pandering to me!" I do it because it looks like fun.
>>94423564>All these are wrongWrong how?
>>94424737Mid-hammer is the most appropriate name for that era lol
I love warhammer but i hate GW and everything it did to this game and franchise. Now it is just a lifeless husk made to appeal to zoomers and tik tok tourists.I blame shittubers for making GW realise they can do whatever they want asblong as they pay some 'influencer' whore to suck their cock
>>94423402>Where it's less about the crushing futility of humanity's situationWell, escapism from reality has always been a big part of fantasy.
>>94424737>Midhammer>>>/reddit/
>>94424713When used as 'evidence' of the RT era annoys me too, but on the other hand it does demonstrate that a little dose of tongue in cheek wasn't just appreciated in Britain (even if Dragon tended to lay it on with a trowel).
>>94423362All three are grimdark. Setting is ultraconservative, it basically didn't change since Rogue Trader. Only things that changed are Tau addition and now Femstodes. GW is doing nothing but reworking and updating already existing factions and concepts, this includes Primaris which are again just them taking what they already made and updating.>>94424683Why do redditors are always posting this noncanon fanction art as if it is supposed to prove something? It's always this pic, Inquisitor Sherlock and maybe one other thing and that's all they ever post trying to insinuate that Rogue Trader was le wacky, non serious. When it wasn't, it was exactly like 40k is now, nothing changed
Liberals love when warhammer was le whacky and ironicracist chuds prefer mid hammer grimpderp thats when they got into it and love Warhammer being super serious nu 40k is liked by actual NPCs
>>94425257To add onto this point GW themselves are to blame with nu 40k. They say 40k is a parody to clean themselves from being labeled as a company that empowers nazis but then go back to selling lines like Space marine HEROES, constantly justifying the actions of the imperium, and making the imperium the defacto protagonists.
>>94423362Lost all interest and dropped when the primaris came.
>>94423362>How do you feel about the evolution of 40k?>campy 80's power metal>grimdark heavy metal>tacticool nobledarkLike it's a mishmash of retarded buzzwords for idiots. So exactly the same way that you do.
>>94423362Mid for me. I'll appeal to authority here and point out that Priestley and Blanche themselves have said that "Inquisitor" was the high water mark of 40k/their last hurrah, it's the essence of what they always wanted to do with that world. Early Abnett stuff also fits in with it nicely, including naturally the Eisenhorn books. There's still plenty of humor, but it's not quite camp, and it had a more focused and nuanced view of it's world. This was before the fans started running with the idea that everything the Imperium does is somehow justified, or taking in-world propaganda at face value. Space Marines were incredible warriors, but they lost fights. Their were genuinely decent people fighting for the Emperor, but Hero of the Imperium is a deeply ironic term. And best of all, there was no true "story": anything added to the world was another toy in the sandbox, and it was up to you as a player to create your own stories in that world. For example, the awakening of the Necrons spelled doom for the galaxy! Or did it? Well, there's nothing else written besides that they've woken up, want to kill everyone, and seem unstoppable, but maybe you and your Space Marines can put that to the test! Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade has begun, and at last the Imperium shall kneel before its true masters! And you're the one bringing it to its knees, or else blasting those traitors back into the warp! Every "big event" was a starting point, not an ending. The Tau were probably the most marvelous example of this, a new, rising power with technology that put everyone else to shame, a tiny empire that could bloody even the Space Marines- aaaaand they're basically irrelevant, on the galactic scale. The Tau were explicitly described as a "Big Fish, in a Small Pond". They could never challenge the Imperium, but on your table, what mattered was the fate of individuals, not the galaxy as a whole. Now we're in the age of super heroes, and your story doesn't matter.
>>94426671Superheroes are what people want. Consoomers are sufficiently attached to space marines that they draw porn of them (although they rule 63 the primarchs first so it isn't gay)
Anyone saying that it hasnt changed is just stupid or denying for some agenda.Theres a difference in the entire feel from the punky roots and aesthetic to the modern soulless corporate modernizing. Its like the difference in mcdonalds with playplaces and the drab grey blocks the stores are now.
>>94425265>I cannot wrap my head around how satire worksHonestly anon? Congratulations on being able to write in complete sentences. I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to overcome your cognitive disability. You're really a great example to other 40k players, of just how much someone can accomplish, no matter how low their IQ.
>>94426784Games Workshop went public in 1994. Money managers, investment firms and mutual funds give zero fucks about your hobby, and they're the ones who own it.
>>94426894business oriented decisions were the fundamental driving force behind warhammer 40k existing at all. All of the development that resulted in the release of 40k 2nd edition was Brian Ansell trying to maximize profit.
>>94426920I have no doubt you're right, considering 2nd edition was published in 1993, and they went public less than a year later. Sounds like a cash-out to me.
>>94426894It aint my hobby. I never touched this shit in my life.
>>94426959"Aint" is actually a contraction of "am not." In case you want to try to sound grounded and folksy in the the future.
>>94423388>we're going grimclusive.Truly the darkest times
>>94423388grim.Heroes & Villains was a mistake
Rolled 3 (1d6)
>>94423362I prefer the 80's version, even though I wasn't alive for it and grew up with the grimdark version. In spite of that, I now see it as rather cringe. I like the nobledark development, but I don't understand why you're labelling it as "tacticool". Just don't play space marines. Problem solved.
>>94426784This was the first boxed set I ever bought, with saved up birthday money and allowance, when I was like 8, in 96 or so. It was definitely campy and over the top, although I'm sure most of the nuance was lost on little me. It did feel expansive though, like you could tell any story in that universe, and before everything had been given lore and a backstory novel that was true. There was room for imagination. You could take a throwaway line written in the margin of a codex and turn it into a whole campaign if you had a couple friends and some patience. I think that's the biggest thing we lost, is that the unique setting has slowly been ground down into something "grounded and humanized and nuanced, made for everyone to enjoy", and that has robbed it of something.
>>94428097Because we have lore autists that insist on established stereotypes with no variation or nuance. A lot of posters here foam at the mouth when you talk about fun ideas that doesn't affect them.Like if I wanted to make a space marine chapter called the dandy legion where they drink drink and wear top hats in battle, I'd get told to kill myself by 5 different autists who need space marines to be taken seriously.A hobby based around painting, tabletop, writing and community get togethers have attracted the most anal retentive no fun grognards.
>>94423388As I read it, grimclusive was a pun that has nothing to do with grimdark except the sound at the start.
>>94423362I want full-on grimfascist 40K, and I won't stop until I get it.Warhammer is not for everyone, and the next four years will show it.
>>94423388>>94429419>grimclusiveI'm out of touch. What does "grimclusive" mean?
>>94429829Rather being out of touch I think you're here at the bleeding edge having witnessed the coining of a new and useful word. Grimclusive, while I still think it was just a witty and funny portmanteau, would be all the things that get memed about in the worst political-correctness-gone-wrong-inclusivity, only in a bad way. I mean bad in comparison to what's already around. Which is already bad enough.
>>94431018add me to the screen cap
All I remember is collecting White Dwarfs and Codices as a kid in 2002, 2003, etc and thinking it was the fucking coolest shit ever. That 3e Witch Hunters Codex was just so insanely awesome as a youth. Revisiting the hobby as an adult just made me sad. I dont know when 40k died but it did. Can anyone tell me what was the turning point?
>>94431126Late 4th edition, I think, some of the old heads had left the studio and new people took their places, as you do. And from there a shift in design focus and more direction and control taken up by the marketing department and things just started feeling Off. Codices were more bland, white dwarf saw less interesting rules and hobby content, and also felt more corporately sterile.Art direction started shifting and just lacked that real moody atmosphere it had before. I was there as it happened and remember feeling like the fun was being bled away from things, I held out until 6th when I finally dropped things and looked around for something else to do. I should have done that as soon as I started noticing things, honestly.
