Usually, this is something most players will never interact even in years long campaigns, but I would love to hear about what's it like in your setting. Who governs it? Who goes where? Is there special cases? Can the still living travel there?

Some groups are responsible for making "gods" who serve as their mortal servents with the purpose of funneling souls in their direction in exchange for the soul substance they consume to maintain their status.
>>94693858Captain Unohana from bleach, which is set mostly in an afterlife that is inexplicably a weird model of what japan likes to think magical feudal japan might be like. Unohana is the captain of one of the divisions of samurai-like reapers, specifically the ones who specialise in healing. She's also a retired ultra-berserker who took up being a healer due to having first learned nebulously-defined blood magic, is incredibly old even by afterlife standards, and most of the other afterlife reaper society don't know this. Her final battle where this is revealed is neat in part because the bleach author, for once, doesn't fall into his own trap of overexplaining how everyone's powers work, and instead just draws cool fighting without the explanations.anyway, bleach is one of those series where it had a strong start but then fell into bad pacing, filler, pacing differences between the anime and manga, needing new overpowered threats and a final arc that felt rushed. If you want to experience it, honestly watch the anime up to episode 63, then stop. You get about 20 episodes of the setup arc, about 40 episodes of the good first arc, and then the anime veers immediately after that into a filler arc people widely say is "not worth it".
I had a character die recently, I like to think he's ascended to Alcoholla where the beer and spirits flow like water and there's always chasers for your hangovers.

>>94694287>hating something because fujos like itHow miserable, no wonder you can't do anything but whine and bitch about other people's posts. I'm a Kamen Rider fan, if I stopped liking it because someone else I don't like liked it, I wouldn't like it and that would suck.

I guess I can see why absolute retard D&D 5e fans like it, but for the life of me I don't see the appeal beyond the most shallow type of blatant power-fantasy.
>>94695841>It's the most retarded brand of "Overpowered god-wizard effortlessly stomps all challenges with super powerful magic".because it's the after story, not a real challenge. You don't like it because it isn't something it never tried to be. It's like hating pizza because it isn't sweet.
>>94695847Pizza is sweet.
>>94695841I like examining WHY someone chooses to fight or not fight, and frieren does that decently. It's similar to bokurano, sometimes the question is not "will they win" but "why do they want to"
>>94695847Its not hating pizza because it's not sweet. It's wanting a meal and getting a big fat nothingburger. The main character barely shows any emotion after the first episode, her apprentice is just as artistically inexpressive, and there's zero tension or excitement in the plot because they both just ROFLSTOMP literal demon generals with their overpowered god-magic. It's not even like One Punch man where it's played for parody, it's just... like watching a pair of level 20 DnD players running a level 3 adventure, but they're both being played by players who are barely paying attention and on their phones for playing on autopilot for most of the session time. I genuinely do not understand how this series got so popular other that the main character is aesthetically designed like flat-chested waifu-bait.
>>94695881*autistically inexpressive
>>94695881again, you saw fantasy characters and wanted a different story, one that has been done a thousand times over, and you complain that it isn't that thing you wanted. The point is the melancholy of revisiting places that were meaningful in your youth but aren't the same as they were. Your could make the same complain about Mushishi or YKK. >Why do we have wizards/robots if they don't have super fights? I'm not even laughing!
>>94695899What melancholy? Frieren barely cares about anything, and her apprentice is too young to care.On a side note, purple-hair girl is shown in a flashback ready to self-delete herself over her dead parents, but then like... they're NEVER mentioned or shown again after she becomes Frieren's apprentice, because lord oh lord that might actually be something EMOTIONAL. But nope, she never reminisces about them, never says prayers for them, nothing.
>>94695922NTA, but yeah, Fern never mentioning or even thinking about her parents were always the weirdest thing to me. Like she was LITERALLY about to commit suicide after they died, and yet you'd never even know she had parents if you missed her first episode.
>>94692643Afterlives are determined by the faith the individual belongs to. Souls are currency for gods so converting is viewed as one god scamming another out of a soul.
Everyone gets to afterlive happily ever after.
>>94695899He's right though. Frieren is dogshit. Clearly the way to improve it is by making Frieren a side character and having the new main character be a modern-day loner Japanese high school boy who gets isekai'd to the world and is inexplicably way more powerful than everyone else. Also Stark is now a girl with huge tits that constantly competes with Fern and Frieren over who gets to fuck MC-kun. Also the world is just like my MMORPGs with clearly defined classes, levels, abilities, and other video game mechanics. Also the demons aren't actually bad, they were only acting evil because they're cock starved whores who didn't have MC-kun there to satisfy them. Also the main villain is now an insolent, bratty prince that wants to steal MC-kuns harem and also maybe take over the world.There. I fixed the series. 10/10
>>94697014That would at least have some comedy value in a "It's so bad it's funny" kind of way. Frieren as it is right now is just bad in a "Wow, this fucking boring" sort of way, for all the reasons mentioned earlier (emotionless characters, meandering nothing plot that goes nowhere, overpowered god-wizard protagonists who act so bored that their "adventure" comes off as a chore like waiting in line at the DMV, etc).

>>94697014>>94697326Honestly the actual way to fix tge series would be to have left Frieren exactly as she is, but to have made Fern an energetic, passionate, creative, and enthusiastic apprentice who woukd slowly drag Frieren out of being a boring emotionless sack of apathy... but then the author woukd actually have to know literally anything about women or how to write female characters... or compelling characters in general.
>>94697326I feel at least part of the reason people jumped onto Frieren and Dungeon Meshi so much is that it isn't isekai slop. >>94697412>to have made Fern an energetic, passionate, creative, and enthusiasticYou know what the saddest part is? There is a character who is kind of like this. Stark. He is also the designated butt of like 90% of the humor in the series and generally gets treated like shit by Frieren and Fern most of the time. I'm not gonna say Stark is anywhere near Akko like in your pic in terms of enthusiasm or fun, but he's the only character who's not constantly mopey or brooding... and this is treated like a joke because he's not some ice-queen waifu like Frieren and Fern. It's actually kind of infuriating once you realize it.
>>94692643One of the problems of the Afterlife is the limit on 'internal' unilaterals. This is the result of assuming multiple Afterlives, each a sovereign Domain within its own boundaries. Then we must wonder about the positional advantage that determines how these Domains intersect and interact... it's not hard to see a broad societal metaphor for nations and such in the working of these. Fundamentally the outstanding question is simple, what's the value of a human soul? Whazit do and why iz peoples stored in Afterlife?! >>94697550Whew, glad ya solved that one! So that's actually the plot of the campaign I'm currently running. >at the genesis of the world, dead souls would eventually turn into spirits>about 4000 years ago, one clan of dwarves discovered that they had a slight affinity for magic, which allowed them to turn their ancestor worship into necromancy>they proceeded to conquer one continent and make inroads into the other, becoming the global hegemon for 4000 years>they would steal souls and use them to power their machines and undead>eventually they got defeated when the Aeons showed up and granted clerics the power to Turn Undead>however the Dark Dwarven machine that collects souls is still thereAnd the current PCs are in a region that contains this machine. They haven't been told the WHY of their task, but they're recovering parts of an artifact (a bell) that when rung near this machine will transform the machine into a proper afterlife

>>94692643The afterlife exists as a higher dimension that souls disconnected from bodies drift into. You have a couple of days before the souls begin to degrade, essentially rotting, as the memories that make up your personhood slowly fall off of your soul and join the background. Afterwards the soul drifts on the ocean, cleansed, before sinking back into the world to be reborn. This can happen a few times before the soul accumulates enough wear and tear over multiple lifetimes that it breaks apart entirely and there is not enough left of it to be reborn.Psychics that can attune themselves to this spiritual plane typically experience it as a vast ocean, which they can float on the surface of but are unable to dive into. This is a metaphor, and everyone sees it a bit differently. Every drop of water is a moment in someone's life, and still intact souls drift on the waves like so much debris or jellyfish or something else. There are [THINGS] that live in this ocean. Some of them eat souls. Some of them don't. It is possible for a human to ascend itself and become a [THING] of this ocean, thriving here as a creature of this environment as opposed to just part of the sea. Able to explore its depths, and with it the memories and experiences of every human that has ever lived or will be born. Sometimes, these [THINGS] share what they have found with mortals. Visions of the past, present, or future. Guidance and forewarning. Knowledge from out of time, like plans for inventions that shouldn't exist for hundreds of years yet. We call those [THINGS] 'gods', or sometimes 'demons'.
>>94695899Mushishi doesn't force in multi-episode long fights where "I've been retaining my semen for ten thousand years" effortlessly wins despite the anime pretending it's not a foregone conclusion, and I'm not sure but I don't think it had a literal fucking tournament arc either.

>>94702308Frieren makes it very clear from the moment Dracht tries to kill her in the jail cell that Aura is not a threat to her. She outright says she is stronger than Aura the Guillotine, and nothing in the show has ever shown Frieren to bluff. The purpose of Fern and Stark's fights was to give them wins that demonstrate their skills without Frieren backing them up. Stark had already had his Dragon fight, but Fern had never done this on her own before and that fight was a pivotal moment in her development beyond simply being an apprentice. Those were fights that could have been lost, but the story never pretends that Frieren is in real danger, as should be obvious from the fact that Frieren essentially chose the time and place of the battle and if she felt even remotely uncertain about the outcome she simply would not have been there at all. The purpose of that episode is not 'how does Frieren win this fight', its to explore important facets of demon psychology, Frieren's history with Flamme, and the absolute depths of Frieren's hatred for demons such taht she has spent every moment of her life for the past thousand years keeping up a charade PURELY because it baits demons into dying by her hand. Aura herself is only relevant as a framing device that makes these details immediately relevant, and to provide an excuse for Frieren to drop the charade which is something she would normally never do. Its a tightly written sequence, and the fact that your brain turns off because all you can see is 'a fight happens' make you a supreme shitter who is literally too dumb to understand what is being served to you. You have the media literacy of a child.
>>94702974>Its a tightly written sequencelollmaoAnime brainrot is genuinely beyond control

>>94703022Seeing Frieren seething would honestly be the most emotion she's ever shown in this entire series. Even in her flashbacks when her village (and presumably her family) are all slaughtered, she's STILL looks like she's on heavy meds and can't feel anything. I honestly cannot understand how this character is supposed to be even remotely relatable or sympathetic.
>>94703044>waaah waaah the character is not literally me, bad character!
>>94703051Forget the character not being me. She's not even human. She may as well be an automaton with how little she seems to care about anything. Even her supposed hatred of demons mentioned here >>94702974 never gets beyond the most mild of annoyances. She literally wanted to just leave and let Aura keep slaughtering people and only finally decided to face her because Fern and Stark were whining about it. Otherwise she would have been perfectly content to let a city full of innocent people be murdered and turned into a demon's undead thralls.

>>94703082There really isn't anything to argue about here if that's genuinely what you believe, yeah.
>>94703022Placid populist
>>94703001The fact that you think Frieren's relative power needs to be 'justified' at all points to your disconnect from how stories work. There is not a rules system that Frieren is breaking by bringing a higher level character to the session. She is not cheating. She is just strong. The story establishes from the start that she and her party already defeated what is typically the end boss of the grand adventure, which should tell you everything you need to know about their strength, and every episode after that reinforces this by constantly reminding you who she is and what she has done. Frieren being too strong would only be a problem for the show if the show was about fights and tried to create tension by leaning into the uncertainty of the outcome and the struggle to overcome it. Frieren doesn't do this, or at least not against Aura the Guillotine. That is a fight that we are told, unambiguously and in no uncertain terms, Frieren will win from the outset. What matters is not the fight, but the character exploration that the fight is used as an excuse to showcase. Your problem seems to stem from the fact that you want Frieren to be a Hero's Journey story, and it isn't. This is not a story about Frieren growing and coming into her power to overcome impossible odds and return a changed person better than she was before. Frieren is a Flat Arc story, where the central character is static and the story is about the rest of the world contrasting and reacting to this monolith that cannot be budged and the character beats that result from this. In a flat arc story, the central character develops only in very small ways or not at all while those around them develop greatly, often in ways that are supported by the central character.
>>94703096Populists generally hold popular opinions. That's not the case here.
>>94703105frieren is pretty popular though
>>94703062Actual proof that Neutral-Anything is the alignment of shallow power-fantasy. With great power comes great responsibility? Nah, fuck that. Might get in the way of my junk-collecting and sleeping until noon. For serious though, yeah... for a character who's supposed to be a "legendary hero", she doesn't seem to care much about the "hero" part. Aura is far from the only problem she acts like she'd rather just avoid despite having the power to fix said problem effortlessly and lots of other people's lives being on the line. Then again if I had already saved the world once already I suppose I'd probably get sick of having to keep babysitting the world after that.
>>94703062Frieren is not a human, and the story makes a heavy and repeated point that non-human characters do not think and behave like humans no matter how human they may look on the surface. EVERY discussion of demon psychology being completely incompatible with humanity is doing double time by showing that elves are the same. Elves are not predatory towards humans in the same way that demons are, but elves are incapable of treating whats happening around them as urgent (because they always think they have centuries more time than they really do) in exactly the same way and for the same reasons that demons are incapable of understanding what grief is. You don't judge Frieren's emotional state by how she looks, you judge it by what she does. Frieren will never say that she hates demons, she will always phrase it as a necessary pest control that can't be helped. Just like she says that she only likes magic 'somewhat'. But if you pay attention, every single demon she fights 1v1 she goes out of her way, even putting herself in greater risk to do so, in order to HUMILIATE that demon prior to killing them. Stripping them of their magic, or even using their own spells against them to kill them. There is no tactical advantage to doing this, she could easily win in more direct ways, but she wants to make those deaths personal. Her actions speak louder than her words.

Therefore there is an incumbent position and variation, implicit under some form of arbitrary staking system. The form of claims could be structured into broad philosophical groups if a context supports it...From the soul's perspective there are important types of claim:>Continuity>Integrity>Function>Endpoint>Persistence>etcSo that might be a fun start in considering the suite of Afterlife Service Providers. You could even imagine this from the perspective of someone with a soul...well (you) personally couldn't. Being a fagetbot must be a chore fire you!A thread died for bullshit that's already in the manual, pic. Read, nigga, read. Read Chapter 7.8.1 8 § 15.568 through 15.957, specifically.

Big juicy baboongasI don't have an order to the afterlife. It's a variety of different places with differing populaces who each claim that their version of the afterlife is the true one. That being said, ghosts are not truly dead people. Their discarded fragments from the passing souls. Most people in the afterlife, excluding the most torturous one, don't want to ever leave it.
>>94694037I bet he's with his favorite spirits now
>>94694213Kubo also has great samples from the itty bitty titty brigade. Just all round quality.
>>94694025>japan likes to think magical feudal japan might be likeBleach is crap.>Hey a anime about the afterlife>Gets aborted to be literally some fighting shit afterlife isr etconned or changed to be another generic shonen medial japan seting.Seriously they have nothing to do with the souls of the dead at this point!
>>94692643>The AfterlifeDoese not exist because it creates retarded scenarios. Dead is dead. There is no afterlife if you die you cease to exist. Very simple and very logical.>>94751668>handbook-for-the-recently-deceased.jpgOh so if you take the new Beetlejuice movie you see this retardation.>Oh you are a very bad man for killing living peopleWhy? Are you not sending them to the super cool afterlife faster? Serious question. The only thing that ever took this seriously was the game ghost master (despite how shit the gameplay is) the idea is that ghost hate the living and see death as a good thing to turn them into a immortal ghost, they even see no problem with demons who kill or make mortals go insane.>Yea this is the afterlife however if a ghost kills you now you are dead foreverLOL WUT?! More retardation. Why not have this in the first place? Like dead is dead no problem. Once more ghost master is the only franchise who ever did take this seriously and ghost are immortal and can not be killed. Trapped yes killed no. >The afterlife is happiness and rainbows and the bestQuestion why is not everyone killing themselves then? The afterlife creates only problems.
>>94766821That was a joke, since the book is dense and complicated in the unreal version. No one said afterlives are all good etc. It's a set of parameters.Spitballing......Continuity of energy is presumed, so death is a transfer of energy. Presumably this energy is designated to a server that runs a designated emulation in return. Myriad forms being what they are, given servers value the feedstock quality of X over Y, arbitrarily. So stuff like Emulation (QoL, External Duration, Projection, Internal Fidelity, Teleotic Phase, Upkeep, Penalties, etc), Thantotic Preference (Server/Client...) would be needed...Getting a bit involved, shit's complicated when entanglement with daily life happens. Good thing that the afterlife ain't real! Wtf kinda game would this turn into?
