Underground Conflict Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked cook-off adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, cook off and fight each other for victory (and the best meal).
A campaign mode is currently in the works, hoping to post a first Campaign Scenario within the next week or two. (you) are more than encouraged to contribute.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :
as with maps, tokens and lore ressources.

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

> TQ1 : Please suggest names for Map Anon's settlement maps (see next posts). It doesn't need to come with with any large blurb, the name itself is fine, if you have a reason and want to explain it go for it, same for a little bit of lore, but its not 100% necessary.

Alright, how do we feel about the following?
>Janara Witches are a pretty important source of theology for the volcano pagans, being the ones who commune most directly with the volcano spirits
>Janara worship the goddess Trivia, who has clear aspects of Hecate/Diana/Venus/Isis, but is not seen as being any of those goddesses (Despite the name)
>Trivia is not seen as particularly significant outside of Janara cults, instead being seen as just a powerful volcano spirit and patron of the witches
>Volcano spirits are somewhere between ancestor spirits and spirits of the world, new spirits are born when worthy souls escape their mortal shells and may retain some memory of their human life, but not all volcano spirits are born in this way and some have existed since the dawn of time
>Fire and life are the same thing; this is both metaphorical and literal, hence the turning into volcano spirits after you die thing
>Passion stokes the fire in your soul, so things you are passionate about are important for religious reasons
>Examples include the Builders Piraneseo and their passion for building, allowing them to indulge in their passion is a way to let them stoke their inner flame
>The world is an egg that contains a sort of gestalt volcano spirit that is in the process of being born, sometimes identified with the Roman god Vulcan, but Janara witches deny this idea
>Everyone must live a life of passion and eventually die to become one with the volcano god yet-to-be
>Layers form as the volcano god shifts and grows in its egg, cracking its shell (causing events like the sinking of Paris) followed by geysers of lava into the sky to form the next layer
>Most people don't really know much about the religion, even its practitioners, requiring initiation into higher ranks (achieved primarily via service to the cause) to learn more
>Widespread misconceptions include:
>Vulcan is the Volcano God
>Jesus is the Volcano God
>Satan is the Volcano God (And we are Satanists)

Thank you for picking it up, I don't think it got nuke as much as I screwed something up, but I can't see what.
In regards to last night's game we didn't even get started, we set it up then switched to talking about the Atlan roster and that turned into something long enough that we simply pushed it to Tuesday. In any case we had to discuss some of the models we were using because they are stupidly over powered at the moment. The Byronic Battle Poet in particular can quite literally win the game without spending a single AP (well, 1 LP, but still, you don't even have to Activate) in some of the new matchups, for example against the Apemen.
The Morlock Courtesan turning Sky-Pirate's heads around so much they decide to throw themselves off their Sky-Ship is at least something that shouldn't end the game right there and then, she'll have to do it a few times for it to win you the game, and she is very squishy (and bulbous). The Battle Poet turning Baboons completely mad by just reciting the opening line of his latest poem is funny, but its way too harsh. I suggest reducing it to a +1:-1/-1:+1 Dread instead of the +2:-1/-1:+1 it is right now, and giving it some max range.

New section on Loadout and Equipment, with a bit more precision on cases such as daisy-chaining items and picking them up.
Will also add a section on building Heroes.
For the "scenarios" in the conditional rule section, the Ruined Temple, Shapes in the Shadows, The Abyss and The Lemurs are mostly finished, the Alpha Hunt, Against the Horde are left open, I believe Atlan Anon wanted to try his hand at designing the Against the Horde one... Anyone got ideas for other such scenarios? A mini Hyperborean raid one could be cool.

how do you see this working out on a ground level?
Are the peasants expected to get really into painting/fornication/poetry debate?
It is interesting to imagine a spy in Italy being very confused as to why there are so many weird art projects in every house.
>>
>>94747608
NTA, but perhaps the Duosicilians are really strong on organizing festivities. Insane parties like La Biennalle are organized as often as possible? Simpler, more immediate expressions of passion are encouraged among peasants and low classes, while the higher ones are somewhat expected to refine theirs.
>>
>>94747608
I imagine there's a national focus on ensuring people care about the work they're doing, care about being a part of the nation, and care about the lives they live. Farmers should care about farming, builders should care about building, etc. Italians should care about Italia, and Volcanists should care about stoning people to death if they speak ill of the spirits.
>>
>>94745585
Something else I just thought about that could help frame the Volcano Spirits in a slightly better light is that they could be seen as improving on their work with each Layer, slowly building toward a world that is more appropriate to Humanity, with the laws of Nature being warped in the lower Layers and more normal in the higher ones being that slow incremental improvement.
>>
>>94745585
You know it'd be funny if there were groups that believed Napoleon is the Volcano God and they're the closest to being right

I like the rest of the ideas too.

>>94747311
Assassination missions would be cool, killing the enemy leader model wins you the game. Could also justify including urban maps, tight corridors and sharp corners.
>>
>>94740222
It's a sacred image. More specifically, a kind of talisman or charm fashioned from titanium. There isn't really all that much too it.
That said, i've been wanting to rework Refined Olms for a while, and i'm thinking the simplest way to do that would be to use Icons. There would be a 'Polished Icon' that would do what the Good Etiquette rule on the Refined Olm does now. Lore wise the idea is that instead of titanium blood transfusions, they have an Icon of the Polished Princess embedded in their heads. So the 'shackle one must place in the olm' would be more literal. I imagine that the Icon is replacing or interfering with their parietal eye, and that triggers some Alder-Olm bullshit. I imagine the primary difference between Refined Olms and Olm-Men taken with a Polished Icon is how successful the operation was, the quality of the Icon used, and the level of invasiveness. Possibly Olm-Men taken with the Icon haven't undergone any real surgery, and just have the Icon affixed.
>>94746626
>I suggest reducing it to a +1:-1/-1:+1 Dread instead of the +2:-1/-1:+1 it is right now, and giving it some max range.
I think at 1 Dread it would be fine, so if there is going to be a max range it should be somewhat generous. I think 5 would be fine.
>>94747311
>I believe Atlan Anon wanted to try his hand at designing the Against the Horde one
Not particularly. I do remember saying something and using the term "Against the Horde", but i wasn't referring to the planed scenario. Alpha Hunt sounds more interesting to me, but i wouldn't know where to start. Are they meant to be one offs or modular?
>>
For some reason I was picturing the icons as like tablets you would carry around.

>Assassination missions would be cool, killing the enemy leader model wins you the game. Could also justify including urban maps, tight corridors and sharp corners.
You are right, a set assassination game would be really cool, we could push it so that it works with partial or uneven Expedition, the assassins get to set up the table (or a very large part of it), they all get Ambush (or something similar), but they get only a fraction of the other Expedition's Chest and/or might be limited in time?
>Could also justify including urban maps, tight corridors and sharp corners
I was thinking of something very similar, to make Urban games its own scenario where the map might look quite different and be more appropriate to urban settings.
>>94751822
>Alpha Hunt sounds more interesting to me, but i wouldn't know where to start. Are they meant to be one offs or modular?
One offs, not something specifically for any Campaigns (although nothing stops you from linking them somehow, but that's not the aim). The Alpha Hunt is supposed to be a game mode where the Players are searching for a hidden boss Hostile which could be hiding behind any bush, and the objective is to be the one to bag it. Attacking your opponent only rewards you in the sense that it might take away tools for dealing with the Alpha.
And well I assume the rest of the Fauna probably isn't too happy about it either, so you probably would have some increased number of Hostiles spawning every turn...?
Possibly the Alpha is unknown, and you could end up with a really nasty picrel or a surprise Terror Saur equally...
>>
>>94753623
I don't see why the couldn't be be that also. It's a scared image made from titanium in some way, that's the important part. Way i see it, the exact form the image takes is up to interpretation.
>>94745585
Not sure about the egg stuff, otherwise quite like it. Actually, as far a religions go, this seems like a pretty good one.

I like these ideas.
>>
A potential alternative to Shaken removing all AP, which is pretty darn harsh.
> Shaken models cannot Activate until all non-Shaken models have completely ended their Activation. You may only Activate 1 Shaken model each turn.
(So, same intent as it was the previous versions, except the Shaken model can only Activate after all other models have *completely finished* their turn, no skipping to the Shaken model then turning back to the others. You could however exit out of Shaken within a turn.)

I think we should do some more lore about how France expanded after it found itself underground. The rest of the colonial nations have a pretty well defined background, but France is very unique, with Paris becoming a part of Agartha and pursuing the colonial project down there first, and with the best logistics. Right now we've just focused on Paris, and even that is fairly barebones. Would also give us some more impetus to work on the names of map anon's settlements.

Thinking about it, there'd be the initial period of chaos and anarchy, almost certainly a new commune, and then they'd realise they're stuck down there, along with all the other strange creatures and civilisations. There would be a period between the initial fall and the beginning of the Eiffel where anything could reasonably happen, wars with the New Mu, integration of surrounding tribes, diplomats from Atlantis and Lemuria, the land-rush for all the new territory mirroring the American expanse, etc. I think we should try thinking up something for that going forward.

Been meaning to get back to this one for a while now. Most of the "equipment" options were pulled from other profiles, with slight debuffs in most cases.
Doesn't matter too much, because people will default to taking 2 sets of Incendiary Bombs anyways. Not that the other options are bad at all, I suspect the Smoke Bombs would actually be the meta choice...

Nevermind then, guess somebody had the idea before me. Still, as you said the rest of the regions are a little bare, and I think we ought to write more about inter-factional relations, especially in the 3rd layer. I feel like the New Mu would have tried to integrate Paris into their system pretty quickly before something stopped them for instance, or a serious Atlan expedition coming for revenge for Philobastres getting beaten back, cementing Paris as a power in the region.
>>
Oh, another thing we ought to do is come up with some symbols and flags for the various Agarthan factions. Would add to their character. I feel New Mu would have a single banner and one for each individual city-state, and then we have Atlan, Atlantis, Lemuria, Sky-peoples, etc.
>>
>>94754354
That is certainly the least invasive option. I like just removing the exception for it's simplicity, but i see the value in this.
>>94753704
Psysaur would be the easy answer for a target, but i guess that would work better for Against The Horde. I worry that if you can attack your opponent directly it will just turn into a normal battle with an unusual amount of Morlock spectators. My first thought is to have one player play the prey. The hidden part will probably be awkward, but i have some ideas.
>>
Maybe the monkeys should have some alternate method of morale than discipline, as like a faction rule?

>Still, as you said the rest of the regions are a little bare, and I think we ought to write more about inter-factional relations, especially in the 3rd layer.
In the 3rd Layer France is closest to the British and the Ottomans, Atlan might have launched a few naval attacks on the Paris surroundings but there's a big ocean separating the two. I have mentioned to Atlan anon however that in my mind any justification needed for Atlans deciding to bash frogs when they encounter them could easily be "This is for Philobastres!".
In the 4th Nouvelle Alger is right above the main Atlan territory, protected by a very massive Pillar, but still much more directly threatened by the Deep Nation. Brits in New Wellington and Satsuma are close to each other, and both are probably very uncomfortably close to New Mu (although, once again fairly well protected by Pillars.) Italians, Ottomans, Egyptians and Austrians are all stuck right in the middle next to each other.
>I feel like the New Mu would have tried to integrate Paris into their system pretty quickly
Huh, I never thought about that. I think they would probably try, but they only had 5 years to really attempt it before contact was reestablished, at which point it would no longer makes sense. Mu has colonies in the 3rd, but under Japan/China, so any contact, diplomacy or military action would come from nomads ranging really far off their territories, or be slow and staggered (unless Imaterii are involved, but that might be too weird as a first contact, and would justify a rejection on its own... ).
The appeal of Mu Priestesses vs French Nationalism. Now that's a hard dichotomy to resolve.
>>
Thinking about finally getting round to writing a profile for Mecha Gorilla. Definitely making him a 6 hex, but not sure what kind of silly abilities he should get, anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking a bunch of neanderthals stuck a bunch of ottoman or British machinery on a mega gorilla corpse, or even handed it over to one of the ambitious scientists who wrought something beyond all expectations.

In comparison to the Flagship its pretty underpowered (still good, but I don't think its worth its price), we could either buff its Armour to stupid level (9) (remember you can now ping Heavy units to death, even though it is a very long process), or add a very strong melee attack...?

Olm Slime must be a very sought after component of Snake Oil.

I'm sorry I won't be able to this evening, should be tomorrow or whichever day I did not reserve for OP (I think I said we'd play the 11th, have to confirm).
> OP
Last game we talked about playing another one this upcoming weekend, are you still good for it? If so, could you please reconfirm its on the 11th, right?

>Maybe the monkeys should have some alternate method of morale than discipline, as like a faction rule?
I was hoping to have them be THE Frenzy faction, which kinda loses its sense if we go with an alternative Discipline system (even if the end result is still triggering Discipline).
I think I was mostly just dumb with the Baboons, I don't want to read too much into the very first game played. If only the Condots had had a +1 Discipline from somewhere I would still have been in the game.
Then again, just giving Semi-Expandable or Fully Exandable or some way to grant those for a turn to some models could probably resolve the whole issue, but it might be too good a way to deal with the issue as well.

>Psysaur would be the easy answer for a target
I like the idea that the target for the Alpha Hunt is unknown and random, but you could set it to a specific Beast, that would probably make the thing easier to build.
As for being 1 player controlling the Alpha all the time, you could do that, another option with the 2 semi-coop option would be to have locations to go check, and if the Alpha happens to be in that location (randomly determined, but the more different locations are checked the higher the chance for it to be where you are looking right now are) then the player who didn't check gets to Control it right now. Perhaps there could be an incentive for it to end its Activation going back into hiding, so that the controlling player does not want to keep it there either (perhaps it Activates twice a turn, once when discovered and once during the Hostile Phase if its still on the Map, with its full AP each time?).

>You may take two heros
Wait how long has this been a thing? I did NOT balance around that with any of the ones I wrote earlier (Like Alexander the 87th)
>>

The initial intent was 2, but no duplicate profile, however not all Factions have 2 different ones, and its clear I never got around to clearly state it outright, so this is hopefully clearer.
If a specific profile should not be duplicated then we can easily add that mention to it. I figured for Alexander the 87th it might be a question of muddy, disputed inheritance of the title, if we don't.

>>94770132
the idea with 87th was that you get around an imagined 1 hero limit using the Fruitful Branch ability so that will need to be reworded. He is supposed to be a crappy hero to justify being able to take more than 2 of him.

Is there a morning you could do? If not, tomorrow evening should be fine.

Rakkad’s Crew:

Captain Rakkad has no name. He has fought for freedom against the Titanium King, the Tsardom, Atlantis, Britain, and even Old Mu itself. From beneath the islands of Libertalia he now sails the fifth layer and beyond in his magnificent submersible, The Cuttlefish. His crew consists of exiles and freedmen from across the layers, many equipped with strange electrical Leyden Rifles and all with a zealous devotion to their captain. He stands against any who would tyrannically subjugate their fellow man, or Morlock, or whale. Though not officially a part of the Libertalian alliance of pirates, it is only through his continued protection of their islands that their alliance can continue to raid the seas. With these qualities alone he might appear as a people’s hero, but the true Rakkad is more complex. He is wracked with a terrible madness, the once charismatic and educated man now twisted with confusion and a true hatred for his foes. His unending war against oppression has begun to wear not only on his mind and body, but his crew and ship as well. Only time will tell if he shall win his war against the world, but if any man could, it would be Rakkad.

of all the power players (Napoleon, Malcolm, Ozzy, Titking, etc) he's the weakest, but also the dark horse candidate in my opinion.

>he's the weakest
The Cuttlefish lets him punch way above his weight class. He lacks the means to project power deep inland, but his control over the waves means that those power players have to give a shit about what he thinks.
I think that's neat.

True, but unless i'm mistaken, there's only the one Cuttlefish.

That is the hardcore shizo-kino that one expects from Agartha.
Would be a cool ability in game too. He could split into many Rakkads, but it hurts his Discipline each time he does. It reminds me a bit of Adventures of Mark Twain, if any of you have seen that.

That's one of the many, many odd films I've watched while working on my various (Atlan-included) conversions
