I have this player in my playgroup, and if you asked anyone else, you'd say there was nothing wrong with anything they do in our games, but one fucking thing drives me up the goddamn wall.
I don't think I've ever seen them play an actually original character. Every single thing they've played is a homage/ripoff/clone of some preexisting character. It doesn't matter what system we're playing, what options are available, or what tone the game is. Shit like general grievous but he's a bugman, it's esdeath but in space, it's fucking just straight up Kaita Managan. He doesn't spam references unless the rest of the table (including me) is doing it, he doesn't do dumb shit that fucks over the party for roleplay, but for some reason it's fucking annoying me all the time.
What I think contributes to this unreasonable tard rage is the fact that only sometimes does the table pick up on it even if it's incredibly obvious like the time he spent a superhero one-shot running around as Master Splinter and no one acknowledged it even once, but sometimes he references some obscure shit that I know for a fucking fact no one else at the table but me and him apparently know, and those make me angrier because I usually only realize halfway through, like when I realized his Paladin was Oryx The Mad God. What the fuck do I do?
>"Hur dur, go talk to him"
What the fuck am I supposed to say "Hey yeah I know you've done nothing wrong but can you please play an original character because it makes me assmad that you don't."

There's nothing to talk about, just let him play the characters he wants and stop being a fucking spaz.

Be like me and not know what half those words mean. That way you wont know hes ripping things off
Besides every true genius is also a master thief

Play solo. Running games for and playing alongside other people always comes with some sort of concession or compromise. I say this as a guy who shares your level of autism but had to come into terms with this fact and lern to have less expectations when gaming with others. That doesn't mean you can't have the specific level of "seriousness" or flavor for your games but that you need to find the right likeminded individuals for making them work.

nothing new under the sun, anon. your donut steel oc is a derivation of something
>>
>>94757688
Hey, as long as hes having fun. I promise you ive done worse (playing the same character over and over again but with slight name and theme swaps to hide my crime)
>>
>>94757688
Step 1: Resolve yourself that sometimes likenesses are coincidental. There are only about 12 characters and they do the rest with mirrors, etc. Actually try to get on board with this.
Step 2. Talk to guy. Your brief is "Hey, I wanted to talk about the way you make characters. I know you take inspiration from existing works, but the ways references to the source come up in game kind of takes me out of the moment. Can we work together to stop that happening?"
DO NOT LIE. ACTUALLY MEAN THIS.
Step 3. Work directly on staying friends with guy. Buy him a beer, enjoy time with him however you normally would. If he's just an online game rando, skip this step.
Step 4. Get your dick sucked.
>>
>>94757688
I think you are the problem anon.
Also ripping off cool character is better than 75% of OC donut steel. Just stop sperging out.

At least your player admits it. Not to long ago my group had this orbiter that tge DM kept allowing in campaigns.

>DnD
Basically made Guts from Berserk. Swore up and down that his character was nothing like Guts despite being a one-eyed greatsword fighter who's backstory involved a curse that made demons hunt him.

>Lancer
You ever see the Secret Level episode for Armored Core? Yeah, he made that, schizo mercenary clone who thinks his mech talks to him. Hates people and is an alcoholic mess outside of his mech. Player swears up and down that he's had this idea for "years".

>Blades in the Dark
This fucker made Joker from Persona, but without the high school student shit. Swears he's never played Person.

>Rogue Trader
Made a "retired space marine" who us basically just Doom Guy, right down to "I hate demons" and "rip and tear" being his two most prominent character traits. Players says all scifi super soldiers are similar and I'm looking at things too hard.

I'm not even mad that he does this shit. I'm mad that he so transparently tries to pretend he doesn't.

>Talk to guy
Pointless. "I do not like the way you are choosing to have fun" will only make the issue worse. OP has to get the fuck over himself instead of trying to control other people.

This frustration you’re feeling likely stems from a sense of creative stagnation. When a player repeatedly defaults to familiar, borrowed ideas, it creates a lack of novel engagement, and that can clash with your desire for originality in the game. The fact that others don’t seem to notice or care likely adds to your sense of isolation in this.

While the “just talk to him” advice might sound cliché, it’s not about confronting him over a trivial detail. Rather, you can frame it in a way that highlights how you value the creativity and uniqueness of the game, and how you're personally hoping for more original contributions to enrich the collective storytelling. For example, instead of attacking his choices, express your own excitement for the narrative potential of unearthing something new. "I’ve been thinking a lot about character creation lately. I love when someone pushes themselves to create something really original, and I feel it adds a lot to the immersion of the game. What would it look like if we all created characters that were completely our own, instead of drawing from existing characters?"

Approach the conversation in a way that emphasizes the communal and collaborative aspects of the experience, so it doesn't feel like you're policing or criticizing their fun. They may not even realize the pattern you’ve noticed, or how it affects the atmosphere at the table. If they value the group's dynamic, they might be more inclined to explore new ideas themselves.

All I'm getting from that is you're mad about their power level being both higher than yours with better references and that you don't always understand them until later. You have nerd envy. Its pretty fun.
Best solution is to stop being an asshole. Good luck with that.

Because you are a stupid cunt. Not exactly rocket science, given your display of utter idiocy, OP
>>
>>94758232
You don't think anything. People here are just mindless contrarians who ALWAYS tell the OP they're wrong no matter what. Opinions flip to facilitate that.
>>
>>94758566
>Player swears up and down that he's had this idea for "years".
That idea is hardly new at all thobeit. There's even a few mech games (good, real ones, unlike Lancer) that bake it directly into the mechanics.
>>
>>94757688
Honestly, " franchise clone" characters are fine if you ask me. They may start out the same but given any stretch of time the player will likely put more of themselves into the character and take them in an interesting or fun direction.

What really fucks my muffin is someone playing the exact same archetype over and over. I know someone who refuses to play anything but the same emotionally detached blonde noblewoman. It didn't matter of it was a game about fantasy witch hunters, star wars scum and villains, or cyberpunk skulduggery, the exact same character would show up to every single game. God that shit was infuriating, especially since trying to bounce off the character was like roleplay with a brick wall, since sge would always be disaffected by everything and want to retreat to her sanctum to study whilst the plebes ran about actually playing the game.

>especially since trying to bounce off the character was like roleplay with a brick wall, since sge would always be disaffected by everything and want to retreat to her sanctum to study whilst the plebes ran about actually playing the game.
I had a player who almost like that. Roleplaying with her was funny as shit and some moments were somewhat memorable, but she always wanted to isolate herself some point on the story. Her aim was to "be someone so powerful and important people would go to her to ask for help while she's just chilling on her home" which is a fair endgame... If this was actualy her endgame. She wanted to do that while on early to mid game.

I've never made a thread here before ever.
Your retarded cliquey behaviour is just obvious.
>>
>>94759256
So no one ever disagrees with your posts? lmao
The reason you experience so many people disagreeing with you is because you're an idiot.
We could go even further from that if you've never made a thread you're just here to leach but still complain about quality but that's a new line of how much you suck.

The two kinds of modern /tg/ player stories are
>hey guys the new guy raped all of us and his character is clearly just rapist willy wonka, when we invite him back how should we express our concerns?
>uh the new player opens his mouth when he talks which greatly upsets me, what's the best fuel for burning his house down?
>>
>>94759229
>Her aim was to "be someone so powerful and important people would go to her to ask for help while she's just chilling on her home"
This character actually had that in the Star Wars game. They were playing a weakened ex-Jedi Master that escaped the purge (who was still somehow a noblewoman AND a jedi, the DM was stupidly forgiving) and part pf the plot had us all happen across the ruins of a jedi temple with functioning training rooms and training holocrons, as well as two Force-sensitive PCs all but begging this character to train them. But instead she just went
>lolnah, not my problem. Gonna study the archives instead
I've never seen a player have a DM hand them such an obvious plot hook on a silver platter, only for them to completely reject it.
>>
>>94758566
The funniest part of this to me isn't the blatant ripoff characters, but how all of them except the Joker ripoff are like the most bitch-basic shallow "badass" power-fantasy. "I am strong edgy muscle man and I like to kill things and be angsty!"
>>
>>94757688
i thought your generation loathed creativity.
All i ever hear from young people is how 'there is nothing new under the sun' and that putting a new coat of paint on something somebody else made entitles you to profit from it and take credit for it.

>how all of them except the Joker ripoff are like the most bitch-basic shallow "badass" power-fantasy. "I am strong edgy muscle man and I like to kill things and be angsty!"
Even joker is just a basic bitch stylish, snarky lonerguy. It's almost like these are very default archetypes and that poster is doing a pic related.

>>94757688
Originality should never be your goal, because it is an impossible one. This is due to how the brain takes in and uses information to adapt a product; there is always a progenitor element, therefore humanity can never create something original.
Focus on applying critical and analytical abilities to what aspects of your inspirations you want to use, and on the creativity required to meld those aspects in a way that's sensible for both playing your game and for fitting into your game's world.

>esdeath
Isn't that the bad guy in Final Fantasy 5?
>>
>>94760541
Yeah, the bad guy with fat tits and blue hair.
>>
>>94757688
Honestly sounds like a pretty cool guy. If the references are so subtle you can get halfway through the game before you notice I'd say just change your expectations, maybe ask them to be more subtle even and make a game out of it.
