He actually developed Capgrass Syndrome after suffering a head injury in battle and the entire thing is a delusion. He's already killed several friends, family members and coworkers and is wanted by the authorities.

He was so good that a traveling merchant saw him bonking wolves and hired him with the other party members in that large town.
