I guess I'm not supposed to go to /co/ for this, anybody here have any experience playing pic? If so, how does it compare to something like Mutants & Masterminds and such?
No, I never played it. Yes, this is the right board for it. If it differs from M&M at all then it's by definition superior. That's the worst capeshit title in the world.
>>94795884>titleI don't really care much if it's called Poopshitenfarts 3rd edition, I'm just interested on how much crunch Ascendant has and whether or not it's a good fit to play with some /coc/ anons.
>>94795790So it's the kind of game that requires you to have super autism. If you do, it's great. You can do anything in it. World's your playground. On the other hand, if you don't enjoy numbers autism or looking at charts with three axes, maybe skip it.
>>94795958I don't know about the super autism part, just that it's more "physics-based" apparently.
>>94795790I've been trying to get into it, but as the other Anon said, the autism barrier to entry is a little steep. As a physics/simulationist system, it covers a lot of ground you would expect it to cover for Supers stuff, but it's a bit overwhelming. I still want to try running a game or playing in it sometime, though. As an aside, the art (inside) is superior to the cover art too, idk why they went with a constipated Sylvester Stallone.
>>94796128That's all I needed to here. Picked the fuck up.
>>94795903NTA, but are you retarded or ESL? By "title" he means the book as a whole.
>>94795790it's genuinely dog shit. It is the author ripping a beloved game while indulging in their incredible lust for pointless maths autism, and then dressing it up with some truly awful art. I can't think of any redeeming factors at all. It's the worst parts of RPGs and comics in one.
>>94796229>ripping a beloved gameWhich is?
>>94795790It is not DnD 5e so you will have difficulty finding players, but because it is a superhero based TTRPG I think you'll have an easier time finding potential players than for a game like GURPS or Exalted or Genesys. Now whether the players stick with you depends on how good of a DM you are.
>>94795790Basically, the system is built around a unique arithmetic system which allows you to easily compute power levels. So, a character with a level 9 strength can pick up objects of level 9 weight (50 tons). The scales are also cross-compatible to an extent, so a character with a level 12 speed can cross a level 12 distance in 1 second. It makes it really easy to locate a character's ability on an order of magnitude.I really like it, personally, because it allows for grounded superheroic stuff, which I really like and saves us from superfaggottery like pic related. You also have hero points which you can spend to perform a bit better than you should on a single roll, which will still allow you to get Batman vs Superman-type confrontation.>>94796233It's an OSR of DC's old TTRPG, which came up with this idea of creating an arithmetic scale for power levels.
>>94795790You're not supposed to go to /co/ for anything. That board is fucking awful these days.
>>94798060Oh, unlike this board?
>>94797699Isn't catwomen just a regular human skewed towards freakishly agile? How is she even able to hit multiple (I assume) speedsters without one of them noticing and moving?
Play Bash! instead.>>94798060>>94798083/tg/ is genuinely worse than /co/. I'd say we're about as bad as modern /x/.
>>94795884Seconding this. Anything is better than M&M.That said, Ascendant is definitely one of the more autistic Superhero Systems.I can recommend: FASERIP, HERO System, Heroes Unlimited, Prowlers & Paragons, Savage Worlds, and Wild Talents.
>>94798559>I'd say we're about as bad as modern /x/.Bit mean to us, innit?
>>94798301Not him, but the reason (bullshit) was that those Flashes were under the influence of Ivy's mind control so they weren't fully using their speed.
>>94798620>recommendI am reading though Ascendant and holy shit this thing is in depth, which one of those you recommended is your top pick?
>>94797699>So, a character with a level 9 strength can pick up objects of level 9 weight (50 tons). The scales are also cross-compatible to an extent, so a character with a level 12 speed can cross a level 12 distance in 1 second.>It makes it really easy to locate a character's ability on an order of magnitude.Isn't that also a thing in Mutants & Masterminds.
>>94798301>How is Catwoman able to hit multiple speedsters?Exactly the kind of superfaggotry I was talking about. That's what you get when writers have absolutely no sense of scale.
>>94795958>>94795970>>94798620>super autismI don't know about autism, but personally I love consistency in my superheroic stories. For me, there's something satisfying when you get situations like "yeah, with your level 7 strength you can bench press a school bus. But this is an Abraham tank, it's close to four times heavier. You would need a level 9 strength for that".Lots of my players are engineers or adjacent, so being able to quickly figure out if an enemy who can swim in lava could actually be hurt by molten tungsten is actually really useful, because that's the kind of ploy they try to pull constantly (and both them and I enjoy very much).
All right, here's a simple litmus test to see if you'll like it or not. Does the following formula appeal to you? Personally, it does (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the book) but I do understand that some people do not enjoy this kind of complicated calculation autism.
>>94804135I'm sorry to say that yes, it's autism, but I don't mean it in a negative way, but in the sense that "you enjoy systems that have little ambiguity but can theoretically answer a question without having the GM making a ruling, but rather looking at the rules."
>>94803791It is a thing in Mutants & Masterminds at least in my 3e PDF.Although Mutants & Masterminds catches a lot of flak for simply being D20 and loosely D&D derived. Not saying it's perfect by any stretch of the imagination though I know its got its problems.
>>94795790Your opinion on Ascendant depands on whether you want to be able to see smallpox and if you don't want it to be the same as being able to see the rhinovirus.
>>94806369Thank god there's a metric table in the book.
>>94795790Like most of the thread has said, autistic numbers ho. Both its best benefit and the worst barrier. It's about on par with HERO System imo, however the numbers autism is not as integral as it is in HERO; its there when you need it for actions but you won't break things by skipping a formula, like if you didnt want to use a certain skill or profession in 3.5 you dont need the rules around it. Dirt-basic combat can be boiled down to:Acting Value - Defending Value = Effect value, reference a chart of like -3 to +3, d100, get result in damage. At 0, you've got a 50% chance of success (green result or more), at +1, its 75%, at -2, 25% etc. So if a Vigor 8 (fighting ability) punches a Vigor 7 guy, he's got +1 and 75% to hit. Better rolls multiply damage by colour range.Since the scale is an actual log you can add and subtract values and plug real-world measurements in and it Just Works. If you've seen Mayfair DC Heroes its almost the same except there's only 1 table to care about. In terms of personal preference, I really admire what it can do and I wish there was a simpler book to introduce people, like Gurps has. You could probably trim the book down to like 100 pages and get something solid and runnable for noobs. As such, if I was running supers for a group I'd probably go with the FASERIP retroclone and maybe switch them over if we wanted something longer term, since it just has more to actually do than simply punch people. Also >>94796128 100%. I don't know why they picked that art for the cover its horrible. Mutton chop man. But then a lot of other supers games have dogshit covers as well so maybe it was trying to fit in.
>>94815229At -1 its 25%, rather. Everything is basically doubling or halving something.
>>94806369M&M 1e and 2e is literally just 3.5 D&D with some superpowers thrown in. 3e is different (stats got completely changed) but its still got similar rules under the hood. I hate how it does health though.
>>94804135>Black Bolt's speech bubbleKek.
>>94795790Tell me about Ascendant. What are its most notable features?
>>94831274>No, I will not even glance at thread, I will just blind post because I am a simpleton.
>>94831327It's bumpfag. This thread was fucking dead at page 10 and he just bumped it because he's a fucking loser with no life.
>>94831327Give me your elevator pitch. Why should I play this game instead of Champions, Heroes Unlimited, Mutants & Masterminds, or GURPS Supers?
>>94831796You shouldn't. If you have trouble reading a 30 post thread, games are gonna be fucking impossible for you, bud.
