Whenever I hear people complain about this game, it's because you use successes to "buy" effects. But it's not really any different than how games where you can succeed past a threshold work. I think it's just people being mad at how the mechanic is explained.

Pirates, much like Cowboys, while a popular genre of fiction, loses its luster the moment you take it to the tabletop. Stack that on top of trying to compete against all the other semi-narrativist fantasy "trust me I'm not 5E look at my just as bland mechanics and slightly different setting" games out there, it never stood a chance.

Really weird claim coming out of nowhere
Especially since 7th Sea actual issue is that there is not enough actual pirating in it, it's just a swashbuckler game (I am forever confused English language lacks more precise term for this genre) that tried to sell itself on being about pirates specifically.

It's only out of nowhere if you live with your head up your own ass. Wild West, Age of Sail, and fantastical subversions/additions to them don't ever do well as RPGs. You can't name one that both has a legacy and is still currently popular.

Deadlands is a thing potentially for longer than you are alive. We've got Gunslingers and Gamblers. Dogs in the Vineyard is one of the most acclaimed things from the 00s.
So is 7th Sea, ironically. There are also Reign, Scum and Villainy, Pirate Borg (which by now is the most popular of Borgs) and guess what for people use H + I the most.
And that's just the top of my head
But hey, (You) said those are doing badly, so I guess it has to be true.
Do you plan to provide any sort of actual argument, or just repeat your claim for the third time?

From the perspective of my native it's like calling fantasy "fantastical literature" and putting it on the same shelf as sci-fi. Or putting rom coms in the same group as black comedies, because technically both are comedies. Which is technically true, but oddly unspecific, if you catch my drift.

Did something go wrong? I'm not even ironic here, I genuinely don't see what's the issue. The game is a known brand in the hobby, it's published by a stable, critically-acclaimed publisher, the books are in print. The hype died down, sure, but it always does. I've read some bickering over editions, but that's not new either. What seems to be the issue beyond the natural life cycle of an rpg edition?

I don't like what they did with Eisen. The game had some parts that was literally unfinished, & some parts really didn't work as intended til they patched it later if I remember correctly.

Anyhow, I played a Eisen Knight who had a big sword & a heirloom gauntlet & he ended up punching with the gauntlet for damage more often than using sword play. It was kind of funny, I remember I named it Fist of Heaven or so,thing like that & I was off trying to restore my family's honor & also fuck a french blood mage

Shame getting a copy of the original book is so hard since the author came down with a crippling case of white guilt and the ruleset is now generic with actual dog shit for art.
