DM is letting my Paladin who has some background as a smith from his childhood work with a proper Master to forge his own sword pretty soon. I think this is some banger options as it's really the culmination of a lot of exploring and questing we've done along the way.

My main thing I wanna do, is that the DM is kinda letting me flavor the weapon with how I'm forging it. This is a classic Knightly-Hero type of Paladin, great justice protect the innocent save the Princess type. A real classic kinda guy with genuinely good intentions to make the world a better place.

The main thing I'm aiming to do is having him recite his Oath of Devotion while forging the blade and using Smites while hammering the metal. Would you guys have any suggestions for some special abilities/characteristics to suggest giving the blade I could bring forward to my DM?

When it damages agood-aligned monster it leaves phantom scars across the wielder's body.

You can use a channel divinity charge to create a zone of truth or a spirit guardians effect.
You have to stick the sword on the ground and leave it there in order to activate the effects.
Oh, also, make it throwing and returning.
Throwing long swords at enemies is super fun.

If you want it to boost Smites you could have it let you pick any damage dice rolled for the smite and reroll them once, taking the new results.

A Dispel attack.

Radiant light that blinds enemies and heals allies.

Swing the sword for a ranged beam slash that applies Smite. Alternately throw it like a throwing dagger, tip forward.

Regain spell slots when you defeat an enemy or crit.

Apply Lay on Hands as a reaction when you or an ally are reduced to 0HP.

You're banking your smites for crits right? You know that crits double ALL damage dice, which includes the dice from the smite? If it were me i'd want to crit on 19
