In the Deathwatch novel, an inquisitor had a plan of feeding the Tyranids T'au flesh so that the T'au non-psyker genes would infect the Tyranids and cause the dissolution of the Tyranid synaptic network aka the Hivemind.

Would the plan have worked?
>>
>>94818593
Yeah, I like it. Gives the dwarves more of an actual dwarven metal look instead of having the same material as space marines, at least to me.
It's quite dark when looked at from a distance, though (plus, these are old paintjobs so I'll need to repaint a lot of these). I'm trying to change my bases into ice&snow instead of rocky snow to give them more of a pop.

>>
>>94818469
I like it as it is but you could push your brightest highlights and some edges closer to silver to imitate light reflecting off the surface more
>>
>>94818610
No. Norn Queens aren't mindless entitirs that just shove in whatever genes they're provided with. The Nids would either eradicate whatever gene leads to T'au not having psychic abilities, or would enhance and weaponize it into a new bioform utilizing other genes while doing so.
>>
>>94818634
Then how come the Tyranids give the genes of the Malstrain strain stealers a long breadth?
>>
>>94818610
>Nids have never eaten Tau before
>Would the plan have worked?
Nope, nids can actively decide which parts of consumed DNA will be assimilated and expressed in future bioforms. They could've just ignored that non-psyker gene.

I was actually considering that already. The longer I looked at the shoulderplates the more I kept thinking "these aren't highlighted enough."
Not really many places that would need it, though. Surprisingly there aren't a lot of really angular edges that need brighter highlights. Take a look at this warrior I did the volumetrics on, for example.

no

the average tyranid has little to no role in the absorption, selection and integration of genetic data, and the organisms that do so all seem highly synaptic/psychic/conscious in what they do and test things out

if the inquisitor thought it was a viable strategist then perhaps in some contexts it is, I can imagine an isolated swarm infesting a planet as running pretty much on autopilot, absorbing as much as possible, and throwing as much shit to the wall to see if it sticks, so in that case perhaps it would disrupt their coordination, if not permanently at least for a time
>>
>>94818641
Because that's radioactive waste.
Imagine spraying a meal with a full can of insect repellant before you ate it.
Yes you can still eat it, and maybe some part of it is still good, but it's not going to be something you want to eat and it will probably do nothing but hurt you.
>>
>>94818641
the tyranids give a wide breadth not to the genes but to the psychic signal that the malstrains give off from necromunda

if the psychic signal is not strong enough, or good enough, it is a sign that the planet isn't worth throwing resources at

it's a bad review
>>
>>94818668
The lore of the Malstrain says that if the Tyranids ever got face to face with the Malstrain both factions would see each other as anathema and seek to destroy each other.
>>
>>94818610
if that was possible tyranids would break down every time they would stop to eat a planet without psychic sentient races
>>
>>94818680
yes and? but they haven't met each other and the tyranids evaluate targets based on the quality of the patriarch's psychic signal
quality is shit = planet isn't worth it

>>94818471

The Admech theorizes that the reason behind the tau low psychic signature is the presence of chemicals in their brain that dim their Warp sensitivity.
Tyranids eat tau and start producing these chemicals in their brains. Hivemind is defeated in one swoop.
That's the idea.
>>
>>94818701

>>
>>94818719
ok but how? do the nids who consumed said body mass store the DNA in their being and the hive mind send the info or already shares it with the queens who then mix and match the data and then fabricate the dna based on the new info it refined then uses this dna to birth new shit?
>>
>>94818697
Basically;
>Center of each Hive Fleet are the Norn Queens, powerful Synapse creatures housed on Tyranid bio-ships
>On the ground, Nids will 'build' Reclamation Pools, which will melt down any organic matter and break it down to a genetic level to create Biomass
>Everything that Nids capture is dragged to the pools. When the fighting is concluded the deployed Nids will also toss themselves in so their Biomass is reclaimed, along with anything they've eaten (Hormagaunts and Rippers notably both exist to scavenge for scraps and chunks of the dead, acting as organic storage meant to be dumped into the Pools when full)
>Bioships will then deploy Capillary Towers to absorb the accumulated Biomass, from which the Norn Queens will pull genetic and psychic information to mutate and evolve future deployments
Essentially if ANY Nids are able to escape from a failed offensive, the Norn Queens will adapt either new tactics or new strains to utilize for further assaults.

>>
>>94818697
they have multiple approaches:
one approach is to spawn waves of nids with a measure of variability so that natural selection can do its course, in those cases, usually gaunts, the tyranids carry eggs so that the broods that survive and prove successful can spawn a new wave with the selected adaptations directly on the planet surface
otherwise the hive mind keeps track of what worked and what didn't and genetically alters the next batch of tyranids to produce in response to the fight's feedbacks
the tyranid that produces and genetically engineers the others is the gigantic termite-queen-like organism called the norn queen at the heart of each hive ship
malanthropes >>94818648 are tyranids that get deployed on the surface and study the enemy's biological samples directly on the ground, those sacs hanging from their bodies contain bodyparts and tissues that they are keeping preserved for experimentation
norn emissaries have been noted as potentially being a budding part of a norn queen and sometimes being tasked to retrieve stuff or personnel, perhaps they are also implicated in the selection of traits

we don't know much else

Yeah, people forget that paid instructional videos were a thing long before YouTube. Maybe this is worth it, maybe not, I know I'm not paying for it. Definitely something that would be better as a public demo or class, seeing as this is a social game, but there's nothing inherently wrong with a reasonably priced tutorial, assuming it's not just fifteen minutes long or part 1 of X. The real joke's when they charge $100+ per session with zero pedigree past having a Patreon and a local painting trophy or two.

Leviathan does literally everything, it's such a mary sue amongst the nids fleets it's not even funny, every other fleet adapted to the subfaction rules and specialised in something but leviathan can't decide what its gimmick should be

and the 4th tyrannic war should have been handed to a new fleet, typhon was promising, and could have easily shared the role with cetu, so that the gimmick this time would have been the two pronged approach both above and below the galactic plane and leviathan could have kept its moniker as the biggest fleet so far still

>my question is do they ever eat just because they are hungry?
most tyranids have extremely rudimentary digestive systems, they are not meant to live for long, just get deployed, rush against the enemy and get killed or kill, and are fed enough calories from the get go to be active the necessary amount ot time to do their job (probably via something like honey or royal jelly, I'd bet)
the ones that eat do so mainly to gather biomass and then return to the reclamation pools or get eaten by another tyranid who will do that

of course some tyranids are forced to be deployed for extended periods of time, so they're created with more functional digestive systems, or develop their atrophied one into a functional one under stress should the situation require it, but even then tyranids are very efficient creatures, genestealers and lictors can stay alive without needing to eat for extremely long periods, especially if they lay dormant, like when they take a ride on a space hulk or some other drifting ship or asteroid
>>
you know now I want a Tyranid base building rts game in which you deploy your nids to battle, win a battle, deploy the nids to take bio mass, create these pools to reclaim the living ones that return as "biomass" currency and unlock new DNA from the fallen enemy entities
Deploy Hormagaunts and Rippers to aid in scavenging, then absorb them before an ambush

the game mechanics allows you to alter minor things in your waves before sending them to evolve your strategy much like the hivemind, you alter them more if you have the required dna unlocked

Norn queens are the base so to speak but are not on the ground but still need protection, you
deploy Malenthropes to aid in the process of studying and scavenging too\
though I don't know how to make it different from the other two nids

we talked about that some days ago didn't we?
cannibalism within the tyranids have long been mentioned, hydra is seemingly targeting specifically smaller tyranid splinter fleets, and we have had instances of fleets meeting each other and selecting the best and redistributing biomass via an actual confrontation
if there's a novelty in what typhon is doing it lies in attacking another fleet right after it has spent itself in an attack against a prey world

and that can be rationalised as not just typhon acting selfishly at the detriment of others fleets, but those fleets acting selflessly to the advantage of typhon
we have seen not too dissimilar "rearing" behaviours in tyranid fleets recently: kronos does not hunt to replenish its biomass, such is its focus to hunt down chaos with an almost single-minded purpose, instead other fleets attack and predigest worlds on the path of kronos so that it can eat those without having to waste time fighting an enemy that isn't chaos

in warzone leviathan there's another instance that's still actually unknown in its purpose but potentially related and arguably even scarier:
a whole planet got attacked by tyranids, but the biomass of the planet didn't get consumed, instead the entire planet and every organism on it got "cocooned" under some fleshy layer, perfectly preserved, perhaps left for something else to come pick up the feast

fascinating, isn't it?

I think your scheme still has problems with large blocks of similar colors, but you can see here how much better it looks when you have more reasons to pull in neutral blacks and browns to break up your red and gold. I also like the warm gray you're using on their weapons that I don't recall seeing you use before.

Battleshock everywhere, at least if he's using the new nurgle daemons detachment. It's pretty fun how many battleshock tests that thing forces you to take.

>>94819195
The greys were always there, but they were darker before. I think brightening them up helped a lot.
As for lots of similar colors that's a bit of a problem with votann in general for this scheme. Some of the models, like the thunderkyn, have large portions of material that'll end up being the same copper color, like the entire exosuit for example. I tried to break up the pauldrons a bit with the red, though. I think the new highlights are helping a lot more than what I used to do, but I'm definitely a lot happier with how my models are looking now than before.

Guys what do I get next for my Ordo Malleus army? So far I've got pic related plus:
>1x Chimera
>1x Inquisitor
>1x the other three assassins
>20x "fanatics" that I use as Navy Breachers
>1x Brother-Captain
>1x Brotherhood Champion
>3x Brotherhood Librarian
>5x GK Terminators
>5x Purifiers
>Canis Rex
Only things left planned out are a Terminator Chaplain, a Grand Master, and another Brother-Captain. Not sure what else to get.. but I want to get more.

man i kind of hate the idea of a machine spirit. i get its there to have technology still functioning even through damage and decay. but god its just such a dumb concept. when i was new to warhammer i didnt realize machines actually had a spirit, instead i just thought it was a religous analogy for maintaining that equipment. but nooo its got to have a soul, i hate it.

That's kinda what I meant, isn't that same as a hivefleet?
Like a large-ish splinter that answers to itself and goes where it wants and doesn't answer to the regular hivemind. I just like the idea of tyranids who are the definition of "player 2 has entered the game" but for the tyranid faction.

Tau blueberries are full and finished, what else can be even added? Fire Warrior kit in particular is perfect, I don't know why would want anyone for GW to touch it, there is no way they will top it. They could get fleshed out Auxiliaries beyond Kroot and Vespid I guess, but battlesuitfags will seethe and don't even see it as an update to their army
Orks have fucked up new basic boyz kit and it's fucked up due to how monopose and nonmodular it is. This would not be fixed in potential 11edition starter set where models have to be simple
Grey Knights don't compete with Deldar for the 11th edition starter set enemy. Them being default Marine faction there would be weird. I think their refresh will still take time

Haemonculi Covens with Deldar mercenaries and monsters like Sslyth would be a good enemy for good guys that are Space Marines to face in 11th edition, just like Necrons and Tyranids were

They could use new Crisis Suits.
Agreed on orks though, their boyz kit looks good but is actually fucked up with how non-customizable it is. Huge misstep.
Grey knights (IMO) either need to be pared down and the codex squatted (Just toss dreadknights, terminators, and strike squads into Agents) or need more or less a full refresh of the faction's models. Everything they have is the wrong scale or is just a shit model (Draigo)

Sure, you can look at it like that. By that logic, however, you're not meant to fear anything in a horror movie because it's just a flick to be watched at the local cinema while you stuff down popcorn and soda, both of which are overpriced. You must expand your mind to include the hypothetical or the abstract, and while you view it in this way you can still enjoy it for what it is. I'm not a "progressive" or anything, and I certainly don't want Warhammer to change its setting to be more tolerant/idpol/inclusive/etc because, in reality, no one should want to live under the yoke of the Imperium or the 40k universe at all. Anyone who says otherwise is either mentally unstable or mentally deficient.

Now, you did quote "nightmarish" but I think you're being slightly disingenuous by not giving the entire sentence a bit of thought. Politics isn't only the action of government. It is also the study of government/the state and those institutions which we, the average citizen, prop up and expect certain things of. What do you see when you look at the Imperium? What do you think when you think of the Imperium? This isn't about the game or having fun. Let's assume, in some strange pocket dimension that has a weird The Truman Show-esque setup but way, way more and that we can process all of it, that the universe of 40k exists.

>Tyranids were once a force of nature that were driven by unknown and incomprehensible impetus controlled by a gestalt consciousness that could not be stopped, only slowed, and at great cost to those in the path of its ravenous hunger
>The Tyranid Hive Mind actually has a personality and can feel higher emotions, with at least one being hate, and it really hates the Blood Angels and wants to specifically target Baal to wipe them out because it hates them

It would make very little sense for the latter to have cannibalism amongst its controlled subjects. I think of ants here with their colonies, and how they're driven by instinct which involves defense of the colony against even their own kind. If ants had a hive mind that stretched its control across the world, why would they cannibalize? What would make Colony 543367 attack and devour Colony 576433 if the ant hive mind had singular purpose and conditions were neutral? As in, there is no chance of hive mind contact disruption or lack of resources between the two aforementioned colonies.

But an animal. Well, an animal reacts. We're all just reacting at all times.

the two colonies aren't identical, the queen of each colony has its own genetic quirk and so do its creations, both genotypically and phenotypically.
the hive mind allows this deviation on the gamble that one may prove more fruitful than another, but once a clear superiority has been established, and one fleet is deemed excessively underperforming, its constituents must be recycled and repurposed.

>The merest psychic glance from the Hive Mind physically knocks the seer out of her chair and causes her to vomit as she's bombarded by images of her own painful and horrific death a thousand different ways
>The reverberation of the encounter rocks the entire Eldar fleet; Wraith constructs are stunned and staggered, ship systems falter and flicker, Eldar crews cower and scream in terror at the aftershocks after the Hive Mind turns back away
Then we get Marines cracking jokes about how they 'must have made the Hive Mind mad' as they smash Carnifexes to death with their hands.

Their ships individually aren't good at space fighting, but there's lots of them every time and each fight with them is a nightmare of boarding actions.

Intercepting fleets in 40k in general isn't easy because most fleets travel either faster or near lightspeed or through a subdimension.
Tyranids have the extra problem of shutting down communications around them with the shadow of the warp, so the only warning of them being somewhere is the fact you don't receive warnings from a certain place and the only sign of them being near you is the fact you can't reach outside to call for aid.
If you tried to look for tyranid ships after they stopped travelling at hyperspeed (most 40k fleets stop traveling at those speeds either at the outskirts of a system or above a planet, it's inconsistent, especially in the timeframes involved after that) with conventional methods, such as radio signals or visual observations, you'd find the ships dormant, covered in a sheet of ice and generally inert, hard to identify as something other than a group of comets or asteroids.

>Orks are fantastic, you'll end up getting intro scratch building, converting toys to Trukks, and doing a ton of fun hobbying. Occasionally you may win a game or two. Fun time ahead. A bit pricey to buy everything official so time to convert count-as units

>Tyranids have always been fun. We may not win a lot and have a lot of bad match ups but we're easy to paint, easy to build, fun to convert, they look great on the table, and have a ton of variety with what you can do color scheme wise with a lot of army building variation.

>>

Okay, fair enough. However, would this not take a massive expenditure in resources that could better be used elsewhere? Let's say your hypothetical is correct and that is what needs to happen. Space, being vast, has the requirement of time to be crossed so that the hive fleet(s) may reach their destination. It is unlikely that they are anywhere near one another's vicinity and must travel many astronomical units to reach one another and then the conflict begins, with those resources used for both to arrive there essentially wasted. Would it not make more sense for an intelligent, all controlling entity that has the ability to direct these two separate entities towards a greater target and the 99.9% guaranteed acquisition of the lesser's biomass and the target's? With fewer losses for the Tyranids as well from having the force multiplier.

Many tutorials on sloptube exist for this purpose. Marines can also be built in so many ways you need a specific idea you’re going for, lastly by the time you have 2k points ready the game will likely have changed. Get some dreadnoughts, land raiders, some tanks, and a bunch of dudes, and figure it out.
>>94820437
But the hivemind isn’t entirely rational. It’s hungry and darwinistic. Losing some biomass is fine since they can always repurpose what is lost and get more. They’ve already taken at least one galaxy.

The 6th ed dark angels book was really cool. It was one of the first hardback books, full of super good color renditions of the the OG black and white art. And the games I played with my friend were all great. But I think I lost every game of 7th by like a landslide. Fearless melee was OP as sin in 7th Ed, and if you didn’t have ignores cover in your army you just could not win. I remember getting so fed up with I I actually bought a wraith knight, only to bring it for the first (and only) time the day my friend brought his casual death guard and I stopped him “literally lol”.

>>
>>94820437
the thing about nids that most people misunderstand is that the two things they're after are genetics and biomass and the two things they expend are time and energy

you might think that an expenditure of energy is an expenditure of biomass, but it's not, they don't burn biomass in nuclear reactions, they use it in biological processes, which means that even the most burnt biomass they can reprocess back into a biologically active and charged substance as soon as they get nearby a sun to kickstart the photosynthetic processes, they're a moving ecosystem, they're not going to run out of resources when they do stuff

but you're right that they don't waste time chasing one another, the cannibalism seems to happen when the fleets happen to encounter one another, it doesn't seem like they move halfway across the galaxy to go at each other's tendrils

I don't like 10th edition much but I'd suggest buying the rest of the available models in the Black Templars range. You really can't make any bad picks then. You'll definitely want another Crusader Squad as well.
Take a look at which units the Black Templars characters can lead and buy some of those too.
Once you have this core of your army, it all comes down to personal preference. Space Marines have so many units and as another anon said, by the time you're done with the ones you already have, what's "meta" most likely won't be meta anymore.
However, in general you'll want at least one dedicated Anti-Tank unit, but preferably two. Usually these units will also be vehicles.

Sometimes I am asked, like today, if I can fill in and teach a newer player how to play. The shop manager often isn't happy when I inevitably crush my fledgling opponent. But the way I see it is simple:
If he fails against me, he can take what he learned from the battle and apply his knowledge to the next,
If he succeeds against me, he does not need to be taught.

GW could easily conjure up a situation in a galaxy full of war where the custodes numbers run low without breaking any canon
>>
>>94821613
nta where are the brothers of silence to balance shit out?
>>
>>94821639
They could also do the smart thing and relegate women to overtly sexualized designs, yet here we are.
>>
>>94821639
And your solution is to have them die by the thousands in the few years they have been deployed out of the imperial palace.
You're asking to make the custodes laughably incompetent to justify adding women to them.
Adding such a fuckup is worse than saying they've always been there.
>>
>>94821666
cuckstodes are already laughably incompetent and shouldn't be in the setting as anything but set dressing for the palace

why is space marine discourse so faggoty? why do people get so mad when space marines die?
why do people hate when space marines win
>>
>>94821663
I'm doing this from an assumption femstodes were happening no matter what, just trying to make it less shitty

Yep.
Do you even understand the IP you involved with here? This would be the easy part

I'm not surprised that behind a femstodes apologist there is simply someone hateful towards 40k.

>>
>>94821663
Mhmmmm nyo
Instances of eroticism in 40k should be only be around when combined with disturbing elements, like SoB or Daemonettes.
>>
>>94821639
Your proposal is fucking dog brain retarded because it's predicated on the concept that potential recruits are the limiting factor. Do you think there aren't enough boys on fucking terra for the custodes? That there'd be a billion custodes if earth wasn't so bereft of available males?
>>
>>94821689
>>94821705
It doesn't matter what you propose, it's against their characterisation to die in such numbers.
They're not guardsmen, they're not marines, they're not the only army in the imperium, they don't deploy on suicide missions or heroic last stands.

You'd need terra to get torn in half before you have such a massive loss of custodes in such a short period of time, and if you need an event so catastrophic why the fuck are you pretending this is any less invasive than a retcon?
>>
>>94821718
they only accept from noble families, not the dredges composing 99.99999% of the population of terra

Just finished this guy.
I tried to "speed paint" by dry brushing and glazing the armor but I couldn't help myself by trying to do some feathering and edge highlights.
I tried out something different with the base. Normally I just glue the snow on and call it a day but this time I tried to mix in a bit of watered down brown paint on the edges to make it look like the mud was mixing in with the snow. Then added drops of super glue over some parts because I have seen other painters do it for a more "melting" effect.
A lot of rough spots but overall I'm pretty happy with it.
>>
>>94821792
Because the farther back in the canon you the more issues there are, and it's simply not necessary to go that far back

It's a heresy FW model. They have rules in 40k but they aren't very good. I just like the models.
