Hey /tg/,I'm currently prepping to run a hack of a couple of my favorite old adventures - mainly 'When a Star Falls' - and as part of that I'm changing the generic fantasy environment to be in a vast stretch of swamp. The party is this going to be doing a lot of small-boat navigation, with intermittent moments on the islands in the swampHave you run or played any fun games in swamps? I personally haven't and would love any tips or inspiration. For shits and hugs, sharing along some swamp art as well.

>>94829352Reed houses are neat
>>94829352Never done much in a swamp in a game, though I had the usual monsters set aside for it for a WFRP 2e game. Giant leeches and carnivorous slimes floating on the surface of pools of water make for obvious ideas, though.
So I'm convinced that swamps kinda suck to be in for people, so i wanted to ask what kinda gear or methods people of pre-modern times had to make a swamp trip less horrid.
>>94830032Yeah for sure. I was looking at big crustaceans, gar, catfish etc as well. Considering wyverns as the apex predator? At least as far as beasts go. Also trying to look up cryptids and the like to add flair.>>94830093They definitely sucked. Historically you had two types of wetland settlement:>The nice / higher parts, with permanent settlements that could be pleasant.>The bog / deep swamp where settlement was done by outlaws, slaves, bandits, the insane... basically people only live in the 'swamp swamp' if they have to and immediately leave if they can.Been doing some research into South-Eastern US and Mediterranean swamps and some stuff that jumps out includes:>A boat, ideally the nimble kind with a pole-oar>Bow or spear(s)>Hammer and simple tools>Definitely an axe, optionally a chopping sword / knife>Spare clothes and such (on the boat)>Nets, kindling, survival shit>Anything like mint or pepper that can discourage bugs>JarsWhy jars? Because there's lots of valuable and useful shit in the swamp, and if you have a ranger type they're going to be able to scrounge up a lot of materials that will make life less bad>Honey & fruit>Herbs and other ingredients for tonics / poultices>Lots of useful greenery and such that can be dried for laterThe biggest thing I've gotten from my research so far though is just how *fucked* you are without a boat. It makes everything infinitely slower, more dangerous, and less pleasant. It's called swamp ass for a reason.
