Im kind of at my wits end here. I bought a Cricut 3 to use for scratch built modeling. it has worked somewhat, but i keep running into issues with the design space screwing up the scale of the SVG files im importing. I use Inkscape to convert the DXF files into SVGs, i have checked the document properties, and that the units are all correct but the svg's still end up either bigger or smaller than the source everytime. I'm ready to throw this thing through a fucking wall.

have you tried turning it on and off again?

yes. a couple times.

Well that's all I've got.
Just spitballing (I do not have expereince with Cricut) but maybe there's some sort of automatic readjustment the thing is applying that you can disable in settings? Or maybe tolerances.

Tech support got back to me. apparently their design studio software no longer has the ability to read scale from vector files/SVGs. So i guess im selling this thing and getting something not shit. you wanna buy a Cricut? it's barely used.

I ran into this when I was getting some stuff cut for laser cutters. The basic info is that svg do NOT encode a scale into their files, and even more so the scales are often assumed by the target program. So say your critcut is expecting 96dpi, but your output program is doing 72dpi.

This problem exists because svg was made for web people, who do not give a shit about absolute scale.

Long story short, dont use svg. I ended up using pdf for all my files for the laser cutter.

ahhhhhhh fuck. I'll try uploading as a pdf to the design space to see if it works. I literally have a Cameo 5 in my cart right now as it can read DXF files lol.

On a side note, I did figure out how to work around the svg problem.
All of my svg files on line 4 (you can open svg files with any text editor btw) have the following
<svg version="1.1" viewBox="0,0,936,612" width="936" height="612"

All of my svg files when imported into inkscape (I made them with an old program called intaglio, now I use eazydraw) come out small, 3/4 to be precise. Which is notably the same fraction as 72/96.

I was able to work around my problem by scaling up the width and height to be 4/3rds their original value, changing it to read.
<svg version="1.1" viewBox="0,0,936,612" width="1248" height="816"

This makes them properly sized in inkscape, as well as the glowforge laser cutter.
It's not really practical for if you have hundreds of different cut files, but its nice to know it works.
There is probably better way but I dont know it.

Also a google search says you can import dxf files into the cruicit 3. Do you need to use the svg?
>>
>>94849516
The DXF files dont retain scale either. they are usually off by quite a bit more than the svg files

what is a Cricut and what does it do?
>>
>>94850148
its a CNC cutter for 2d objects

for laser cutting I always use .ai

I own a small die cutting machine I bought from Aliexpress years ago, shit has been so awesome for cutting cards and tokens, haven't had to replace any die even if I've used them tons of times.
Ofc, the huge restriction is that you can't just change sizes the way you'd do with digital files since you're using a physical metal cutting die. But I'd still recommend it a lot.

>die cutting machine
Can you tell me more about this? Like you can use it to fabricate your own dies and punches? Is it in of itself a cnc machine?
>>
>>94850143
Rip. What good are dxf for then?
>>
>>94850307
Nah, it just pushes the metal dies into a plastic plate. Technically you don't even need said machines to cut by using dies as you could instead just set the die, the paper/cardstock and use a hammer, but that'd be stupid impractical and prone to moving, the machine just applies the pressure uniformly.
The dies are bought separately, not sure how the dies themselves are made, maybe cast into metal molds so yeah not something easy to do at home lol
Pic is not my machine but it's the same type.

...Why not just scale it up to the size you need it to be? I haven't worked with a lot of cricut stuff, but I know you can scale things to an exact, proportional numeric value if you need to.
